Tyree Brown, 25, allegedly

hijacked a black 2006 Hum-mer at gunpoint just after 6 a.m. Sunday on Staten Island, police said. Transit offi cers spotted the car in the toll plaza around 1:15 a.m., offi cials said.

The car was stopped and offi cers fi red several shots when Brown sped through the toll plaza, offi cials said. Brown alleg-edly abandoned the SUV at Narrows Road North and Steuben Street.

Recent drownings spark swimming safety push

Saturday’s drowning death of a toddler in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park has sparked an effort to improve water safety in the city.

Family members of 2-year-old Ruhshona Kur-bonova stood by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Ad-ams at Grand Army Plaza on Monday, not far from where the girl’s body was found after she wandered away from her relatives.

Dilshod Isakov, Ruhsho-na’s father, spoke through a translator to thank of-ficials for spreading the message of water safety on behalf of his family, saying: “They’re very sad and don’t want it to happen again.”

Part of driving down water-related deaths, Ad-ams said, is education. In Brooklyn, leaders will visit

waterfronts to offer safety tips and educate visitors.

He pointed to four other recent drownings as evidence of the need: On June 26, a 21-year-old Wil-liamsburg resident dove in to the East River and was swept away; two Bronx teens died after diving into the Bronx River on June 20; and one day earlier, a man, 29, died after jump-ing off a Coney Island pier.

City officials high-lighted the importance of swimming classes. The Parks Department offers “Learn to Swim” classes free for all ages at pools in the city

“The frustrating thing about all of is this that 98 percent of all drowning deaths are not necessary,” said Shawn Slevin, founder of the Swim Strong Foun-dation, a nonprofit that

offers scholarships for les-sons for families below cer-tain income levels.

Slevin said he hopes to work with the Department of Education to put water safety into its outreach.

“No family should have to go through what you did,” Slevin said to Isakov.

Lives lost

“When you look at the number of people who are losing their lives,” he said, “the fi ve people who lost their lives in the last three weeks — all of them were under the age of 30.” Eric Adams

Too many

17There were 17 drowning deaths in 2012, according to the Health Department.

25That’s down from 2011’s 25 deaths.

Cops take aim at summer violence The NYPD is going “all out” to combat summer violence.

As part of the Summer All Out program, about 313 police were temporar-ily placed on patrol this month and sent to 15 precincts and housing police service areas with the highest volume of shootings, officials said Monday.

There will be also

another 25 to 30 impact officers deployed citywide every day this summer, Chief of Department Philip Banks said.

“The result is to have an impact on street condi-tions, specifically shoot-ings,” Banks said.

Shooting incidents are

up about 9 percent since 2013, from 514 to 562 year to date through Sunday. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said shootings may inch up some years, but that the city is experienc-ing a decrease in crime.

“We’ve had years where homicides went up, years past where shootings went up,” Bratton said, “We addressed it, the next year it went down.”

The new officers will temporarily leave desk jobs and special assign-ments, officials said.

Instead of reassign-ing officers, City Council members had supported adding 1,000 cops to the force. The bid failed.

“I could always use more cops, but if the bud-get doesn’t support it, the budget doesn’t support it,” Bratton said. ANNA SANDERS

Uber, the car-sharing service that lets people order transportation via a smartphone, is temporar-ily cutting fares on its taxi-like option to step up competition with New York City cab services.

The startup reduced fares by 20 percent in New York for its UberX service, making it cheaper than a city taxi, the company said Mon-day. An UberX ride from New York’s Grand Central to the Financial District would cost $22 under the new fares, compared with $24 for a city taxi, Uber said. The lower prices will be in place for a limited time.

“New York is Uber’s biggest market, and we’re growing fast, but we always hear, ‘I like Uber, it’s convenient, but a taxi is still the best deal,’” said Josh Mohrer, Uber’s general manager for New York. “It’s always been a goal of ours to be cheaper than taxis.” BLOOMBERG

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made New York the 23rd state to legalize medical mari-juana on Monday when he signed the bill into law, calling it the country’s smartest approach to the issue so far.

“It is complicated and it required a nuanced approach,” Cuomo said at the New York Academy of Medicine on the Upper East Side.

That balance includes a waiting period of 18 months before the pro-gram can go live.

The earliest New York-ers might see the law go into effect is January 2016,

Google rates video stream quality

Google Inc. is rating Internet service provid-ers’ video streaming

quality on a new web-site, the latest de-

velopment in the fi ght between broadband providers and content companies over who is to blame for slow streaming speeds.

A link to the website appears when videos on Google’s streaming service, YouTube, are slow to buff er. The website quietly launched in May, but recently drew growing publicity.

“There are many factors that infl uence your video stream-ing quality, including your choice of Internet Service Provider. Learn how your ISP performs and understand your options,” the website reads. REUTERS

One team of researchers assessing the risks of elec-tronic cigarettes is count-ing the puffs taken by vol-unteer “vapers.” Another team will comb Facebook for posts on how people are tinkering with e-ciga-

rettes to make the devices deliver extra nicotine. A third is building a virtual convenience store for 13- to 17-year-olds, measuring how e-cigarette displays and pricing influence whether minors buy the in-creasingly popular devices.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is spending $270 million on these and 45 other research projects to determine the risks of e-cigarettes before millions more Americans become hooked on them. REUTERS

Dutch student Job Jans-weijer wants to give sick children a chance to just be kids. That’s why he created KonneKt, a toy that transforms the glass panel used to isolate sick children into a place for playful multi-colored ob-jects, attached by magnets and suction cups that can be used to create games to be played with their peers. “Children, parents, child-care workers and doctors were very positive about it. And many hospitals in different countries have already indicated they would like to have it too,” Jansweijer tells Metro.

What inspired you to create KonneKt?For my graduation project, I interviewed child cancer patients. ... I learned that I had been prejudiced about them. ... Instead of focusing on them having cancer, I should focus on them being children. They still want to play and explore.

OMG! New toy allows isolated sick children to play with peers

Two children play with KonneKt in a hospital. JOB JANSWEIJER

Visit us online atMetro.us/omg for more interviews.

I strongly believe that all children should be able to play with other children, but these children couldn’t. I want to change that with KonneKt.

What kind of games they can play? The kids can play together on opposite sides of the window. They can attach shapes to a window using suction cups and magnets, and by combining these shapes in different ways, the children can build a maze or a jungle, castles and dragons or tropical birds, play existing games such

as chess or tic-tac-toe, or variations on Pacman, or anything else they can imagine. KonneKt is designed to trigger the imagination of children.

What are the plans to make the toy available?[It’s expensive.] That’s why I will launch a crowdfunding campaign in September. People can buy a game for at home, and the same game is donated to a hospital. If [it] succeeds, I expect the first games to arrive at hospitals in a year from now. WANISE MARTINEZ,

Real estate. Hidden costs renters should know before signing If you’re one of the many people hunting for a new apartment right now, there’s a lot to consider. Several factors will have you paying more that you might not know about. We got XL Real Property Management CEO Dylan Pichulik to expose these real estate secrets.

Higher ceilings. Many apartment hunters covet big windows and high ceilings, but Pichulik says they can be a big money suck. “Apartments with high ceilings require more energy to keep cool in the summer or heat in the winter,” he says. People of-ten focus on the monthly rental cost and neglect the potential costs of their utilities bill.

Unexpected tipping. “I don’t think a lot of people understand the extent of the costs of tipping doormen, supers and other staff,” Pichulik says. The small costs of tipping

Before you head to your broker’s offi ce to sign the lease, there’s some things you need to know. / COLOURBOX

when someone helps get you a taxi or fixes some-thing for you can add up.

Amenities. Complexes boasting gyms, game rooms and other amenities are popping up all over the city, but according to Pi-chulik, it’s not often listed in the rental ad how much these amenities cost to use. “Ask about additional costs when you are first looking at the apartment, not when you’re about to sign the lease,” he says. EMILY LAURENCE

One more tip

Neighborhood costsDon’t just consider the rental cost; know what’s in the area, Pichulik recommends. Is the only grocery store a Citarella? Will you be paying more for beer than in your old hood? Consider all the potential costs before making a decision on where to live.

Ways to work I love travelling and have now been to more than 90 countries even as I’ve been working nearly every day, raking in six or seven fi gures a year for the past 15 years. I spend a good amount of money on travel, but always make sure to save a good portion of my earnings for retirement and to spend on the next trip! How do I balance my work and travel? Here are three tips:

Use technology to free yourselfWordPress, Skype, WhatsApp and GoToWe-binar are just a few of the new technologies I use to manage my business while I travel abroad. You can call me a travel addict because

I recognize that you don’t have to work from your home offi ce, cubicle or offi ce in just one city or town.

No matter what your profession, use Google to see what kinds of tools are out there to help you do your job and you, too, can earn a steady income from anywhere in the world where there’s an Internet connection.

Plan ahead

If you’re going to work and make money from loca-tions where 99.9 percent of people there are on a vacation where work is the last thing on their minds, you need to be meticulous or else risk becoming a vacationer too.

Team USA’s fi nal few minutes of play before they lost remind us that there’s still hope for the future.

2 3 New smartphone apps are being developed to improve your health —

everything from eyesight to cholesterol and diabetes.

I always do thorough research ahead of time to make sure my hotel and itinerary allow for plenty of work time on the highest speed Internet possible in every travel destination.

I love beaches and tropical locations, but the Internet can be very slow in places like Turks & Caicos, Bora Bora and the Maldives, so be sure to research hotels and cafes that have the best Internet possible. TripAdvi-sor has a nice way to search reviews from business travelers.

Invest in proper equipmentMaking money while travel-ing is the dream of many, but to do so you need to be

well equipped. Don’t bring an old laptop that doesn’t utilize the latest technolo-gies and expect to be able to do your work quickly.

Working from crowded cafes or business centers is sometimes unavoidable, so invest in a premium headset with a microphone so you can use Skype to handle calls or play music and not be disturbed by those around you.

Other people will inevitably look at you like you’re crazy and encourage you to stop working and go relax, have a drink and swim in the beautiful waters, but don’t let them distract you from your goals. You can al-ways take a dip after you’ve made enough money to pay for some — or all — of the vacation.

EMILY [email protected]@metro.us

An embarrassment of riches

Love ’em or hate ’em, you know who they are: Rich Kids of Instagram is a Tum-blr that popped up two years ago filled with photos of teens unapologetically flaunting their extreme wealth. Photos of $40,000 shopping sprees, out-of-

control yacht parties and champagne bubble baths are just a sampling of what you’ll find. Now, in the first Instagram-to-book deal, a novel based on those pho-tos comes out today.

The anonymous cre-ator of the Tumblr enlisted writer Maya Sloan — who ghostwrote Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s new YA novel — to write the book, which centers on a Danish royal and his five friends. “The 10 most frequent contributors

of the site served as a basic resource of information in the beginning,” Sloan says.

“The book is completely fic-tion, but I researched who these teens were, who was hanging out with who and what they were into.”

Amazingly, Sloan was able to befriend a real Eu-ropean heir for research, as long as he remained anonymous. She says her husband, who is Danish, also helped provide a lot of insight for the main char-acter.

When writing the book, Sloan’s challenge was to

humanize the teens so they would be more than just a clique that people laugh at.

“As I got to know people with extreme wealth, I did start to feel for them,” she says. “There’s a classic money-can’t-buy-love thing going on. A lot of these kids are really lonely, feel un-loved and are looking for a way to feel validated.” Go to Metro.us to

1 Colfer back for more ‘Glee’

“Glee” fans got a shock last week when star Chris Colfer tweeted that he’d been let go from the show ahead of its fi nal season, but it turns out it was all the work of a hacker. “We’ve been alerted that Chris Colfer’s Twitter account has been hacked. Rumors of his dismissal from ‘Glee’ could not be further from the truth,” a rep for 20th Century Fox TV says in a statement. Colfer wasn’t the only cast member to have an account hacked. Lea Michele was sur-prised when her Twitter account suddenly read, “Before this gets out to the media, I would like to announce to my fans that I am pregnant.” Maybe the rest of the cast members should change their passwords.

Simpson’s dad brings a ‘client’ to wedding Joe Simpson showed up at daughter Jessica’s wedding last week with 21-year-old Scot-tish model Jonathan Keith, whom Simpson

insists is just a “client” but is rumored to be his lover,

according to the National Enquirer. While sources say Simpson revealed his sexuality to his ex-wife

and children before fi ling for divorce in 2012,

he’s denied any gay rumors as “ridiculous.” Hey, gay or straight, it’s not cool to bring a “date” to your

kid’s wedding — especially when

your paramour is 12 years younger than

the bride.

Where to stay

The Dylan Amsterdam Keizergracht 3841016GB Amsterdamwww.dylanamsterdam.comAfter a long day of biking around the city, what better way to relax than to treat yourself to The Dylan’s fi ve-star accommodations. The Dylan opened in 1999 as the world’s fi rst high-end, boutique hotel. Book a night in one of its 40 individually designed rooms, such as one that has been recently renovated by famed Dutch architect Remy Meijers. Then, enjoy High Wine and French cuisine at Vinkele’s, the hotel’s Michelin star-winning restaurant. A bonus: The Dylan contracts with its own private bike tour guides.

Sex, drugs … and cycling

Amsterdam is arguably best known for its red light district and cannabis coffee shops, but the city on the banks of the Amstel River is also home to a lot of bike enthusiasts.

The Dutch as a nation love to bike. Amsterdam has a population of about 750,00 people and an es-timated 600,000 bicycles within its city limits. The 250 miles of dedicated bike paths and relatively flat ter-rain make it ideal for bik-ing. The city’s many nar-row, one-way streets add to its biking appeal.

Amsterdam’s cyclists have a reputation for ignor-ing traffic rules and riding with little regard for life or limb. Travelers would be wise not to apply “when in Rome” logic here, because cyclists don’t have the right of way in traffic. Unless otherwise indicated by traf-fic signs, the right-before-left rule applies.

Word of warning: Am-sterdam has a high rate of bicycle thefts, so it’s

it’s fun for kids to be in an outdoor setting.

Go beyond the coverMany famous kids books are set in places that we walk by every day. After your daughter reads “Eloise,” have tea at the Plaza together. “Or you can go to a museum like the Museum of Modern Art and relive ‘The Fixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frank-weiler,’” recommends McGuire.

Learn about it later

“After visiting the zoo, have kids learn more about animals with the Discover More series. Or check out a science museum and search for STEM-related titles in the gift shop to keep their curiosity going,” says McGuire. EMILY LAURENCE

It’s officially summer — and if your kids are like most, they’re excited to put their books away and focus more on running around outside, watch-ing TV and playing with your iPhone. Reading probably isn’t on their mind, so we asked Maggie McGuire, vice president of eScholastic, Parents & Kids Channels for fun, in-teractive ways to keep kids reading all summer long. McGuire is also one of the creative minds behind the Scholastic Summer Read-ing Challenge. She shares these tips with parents.

Read outside

“Swing by Governor’s Island new Hammock Grove, Riis Beach in Far Rockaway or the new Brooklyn Bridge Park for an outdoor read-aloud,” McGuire says. Especially if it’s a book about nature,

Be a reading role modelIf your kids see you reading, they are more likely to read themselves. “Take your child to a book signing for an author you

like or go to the library to-gether, where you can read side-by-side,” McGuire says.

Don’t assign books

Let them choose their own booksYour son or daughter will be more likely to pick up a book to read if it’s something he or she picked out and not something you gave them and assigned. McGuire suggests taking a trip to a local community bookstore together where you can not only browse diff erent books, but also check out kids only readings.

Can’t force people to conform to your valuesRe: ‘Constitution doesn’t protect pursuit of pleasure,’ (Metro, July 3-6) To letter writer Justin Dobbs I would reply: History shows that every state which attempts to upgrade the “morality” of its citizens from ordinary human nature to some religious or otherwise unnatural ideal ultimately resorts to using totalitarian means to accomplish this impossible goal. People aren’t going to make love the way that you imagine is right for them because birth control is harder — or easier — to obtain! PHIL BARBER, VIA EMAIL

Method to his madnessRe: ‘Calling Kanye West gets expected results’ (Metro, July 7) In response to Kanye West’s quote during the concert replac-ing Drake: The obscure mask was to distract you from whose creativity it was coming from. Louie Vuitton is the representa-tion of the ultimate goal of status for the black rapper. Kanye’s point was that society will discrimi-nate against the black American before any and all other races. In essence, for this, Kanye is saying “I don’t give a damn.”SCOTT CARSON, VIA EMAIL

• Avery Johnson (2010-12): Prokhorov’s fi rst hire led the Nets through two awful sea-sons (46-102) before being fi red.

• P.J. Carlesimo (2012-13): The former Seton Hall coach took over on an interim basis from Johnson and led the team to a 35-19 re-cord. But they bombed out in the fi rst round of the playoff s.

• Jason Kidd (2013-14): The circle was complete with Kidd’s one-and-done season in Brooklyn.

Band back together

Rambis joins Fisher on Knicks bench

The Knicks picked their top assistant for new coach Derek Fisher on Monday and it was a surprise to no one.

Kurt Rambis, who was a longtime assis-tant of new president Phil Jackson and coached Fisher in Los Angeles, will join his former protege on the bench.

“Kurt is exactly the type of person we want in our organization to help develop our cul-ture of success,” Fisher said in a statement.

Rambis was a candidate for the head coaching job. He was briefl y at the helm in Minnesota. METRO

This summer for the Nets was supposed to be about getting Brook Lopez and Deron Williams back to full health, re-signing Paul Pierce, seeing if Kevin Gar-nett wants to return and tweaking a 44-win roster.

But on Monday it was instead about introducing Lionel Hollins as the Nets’ new head coach and the franchise’s fourth since moving from New Jersey following the 2011-2012 season.

Having a press confer-ence to introduce a new head coach was not ex-pected — at least not two weeks ago.

Then Jason Kidd tried to grab more power, own-ership denied him and allowed him to leave for Milwaukee. That was fol-lowed by stories of ram-pant dysfunction that described Kidd trying to undermine King, who re-portedly wanted to make a coaching change when the team was 10-21 early last

season.“I think the only stabi-

lizing way I can be is just that I’m here and if [the players are] out watching, they know that I’m going to be straight with them,” Hollins said. “I’m going to be consistent with them and we’re going to have fun. We’re going to work hard and we’re going to win.”

Like Kidd, the percep-tion was Hollins clashed

with management in Memphis, where he was fired after the 2013 season.

“It was difficult because it wasn’t about coaching at all and it wasn’t about analytics,” Hollins said. “It wasn’t about any of that stuff. The guy in charge wanted to bring somebody else in.”

NBA. The Nets introduced their replacement for Jason Kidd Monday.

17SPORTS

It’s the penultimate round in the biggest sporting event in the world, and the final four are slated to bat-tle Tuesday and Wednes-day afternoons. Two soccer powers will duel in the first match at 4 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN, with host country Brazil facing Germany.

It seems that everything has fallen into place for the Germans to prevail, with suspensions and injuries creating an even playing field. Many members of each squad are teammates, or rivals during the regular season in Europe, so there is no lack of familiarity be-tween these two squads.

Historically, Brazil owns a 12-4-5 advantage over

Germany in 21 games. The only other time they played in the World Cup was the 2002 final, a 2-0 victory for the South Americans.

If these two were slated to play when the World Cup began in the group stage, it would be a clear Brazil advantage. But Ney-mar, who suffered a frac-tured vertebra in Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Colombia, is out at least three weeks.

“There are two games left and I am sure that my teammates will do every-thing possible so that my dream, which is to be a champion, comes true,” Neymar told Brazil’s web-site.

Also their captain, Thia-go Silva, was given a sec-ond yellow card against Co-lombia, meaning he won’t be able to play Tuesday.

Germany couldn’t have written a better script.

Germans put successful passes to test

It’s a tale of two diff erent approaches in Tuesday’s World Cup semifi nal be-tween Brazil and Germany.

The Germans move the ball extremely well. The team has played 500 more successful passes than anyone else in the

competition.The two styles of play

couldn’t be more diff erent. Germany plays fundamen-tal, ball-control soccer, while Brazil tries to win at all costs.

“I am all for hard, clean challenges, but there were one or two tackles which were over the limit,” Germany’s Bastian Sch-weinsteiger told the media Sunday. EVAN MACY
