HunterNet Sign Milestone MOU with China National Coal Association The China National Coal Association, under the management of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Admin-istration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), the People’s Republic of China is the largest organisation rep-resenting the coal industry in China. The 1300 plus members of the association are engaged in mining, mining equipment manufacturing, transport and logistics, geological exploration and R&D.

Accompanying CEO, Tony Cade and ABE Project Director, Karl Putnis were 5 HunterNet company representatives who provided presentations covering newly developed technologies and specialist services relating to the mining sector. These presentations reflected some particular areas of interest which were raised by CNCA during discussions in Beijing and included the latest in geophysics and coal exploration technology (Ultramag), surface mining technologies and improved processes (UEA Mining), waste reduction systems for coal loading (Multiskilled Resources Aust.), newly commercialised R&D case studies in coal (Newcastle Innovation) and safety culture change (Safetyworks). Christina Murphy, Asian Century Business Plan Engagement Manager, International Issues Branch, Austrade also attended the MOU signing.

These presentations were very well received by the delegation and created great interest. There are a number of follow up actions underway.

“We would like to extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to Mr Tony Cade and Mr Karl Putnis and all the friends from HunterNet for the warm reception we received. The signing of the Memorandum is a remarkable milestone for both HunterNet and CNCA. We believe that the Memorandum will strongly promote the exchange and cooperation between the Australian and Chinese coal industries”, said CNCA Deputy Director General, Ms Su Chuanrong.

The key objectives of HunterNet’s ABE project are:

Assist HunterNet members engaged in the mining equipment, technology and services sector to more effectively access in-market business networks and develop new relationships with potential business contacts and partners in China and Indonesia.

Identify and secure more opportunities for HunterNet members to compete and succeed in regional value chains (with a focus on China and Indonesia).

Enhance and strengthen business links between Australia and Asia by reinforcing the profile of Hunter based business capability within China and Indonesia to increase the awareness and understanding of Australia in Asia and of Asia in Australia.

As a key outcome of HunterNet’s visit to China in April, as part of HunterNet’s Asian Business Engagement (ABE) Project,

an MOU was jointly proposed, negotiated and finally jointly signed with the CNCA in Canberra on May 26th during a CNCA led delegation visit to Canberra which included senior representatives from Chinese mining and technology

state owned enterprises.

HunterNet members are invited to join Karl Putnis and participate in the

2014 China (Mount Tai) International Mining Equipment and Technology Exhibition held from August 31 to September 2

at Mount Tai Exhibition Centre in Tai’an City, Shandong Province.

CNCA have offered HunterNet free exhibition space and more information will be forthcoming. Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) can be claimed

retrospectively to cover travel, trade fairs, promotional material, internet or print advertising, web costs, overseas representatives, and patents and trademarks.

Contact Karl for all enquiries.

Tony Cade and Mr. Tian Hui, Vice President, CNCA exchange signed MOUs

Build Them Here!

The NSW government intends to spend $2.8billion on

a new fleet of 65 intercity trains (520 new carriages)

that would run on the Newcastle, Sydney and

Wollongong lines. It has indicated a desire to buy

them off the shelf and work with ‘‘the world’s leading manufacturers’’, prompting fears that

local manufacturers will miss out.

In response to this, Hunter’s peak business and union groups have formed a rare alliance in

a fresh bid to save Hunter jobs and bring one of the state’s

largest manufacturing contracts to Newcastle.

HunterNet ,AIG, Hunter Business

Chamber, and Newcastle Trades Hall Council

have co-signed a letter to Premier Mike Baird,

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and state

Opposition Leader John Robertson, saying the

Hunter not only has the capacity and trade

skills to build the carriages, it also offers a good

economic return to the state.

The letter and ‘‘Build Them Here’’ campaign points out that while the government might be

able to buy the carriages cheaper overseas, it would miss out on the payroll and income tax

generated by such a large project at home.

The letter, which is also being sent to all state MPs, says ‘‘the Hunter region has the

capability and track record to supply the desired high quality trains, and our manufacturing

industry is incredibly important to us and NSW more broadly’’.

‘‘We have highly skilled workers who are ready to be a part of the delivery of the new fleet

and we have a growing number of unemployed young people,’’ it continued.

‘‘Collectively we represent the workers, the manufacturing firms, the suppliers and the

broader community who stand ready to deliver the new fleet for NSW.’’

Trades Hall secretary Gary Kennedy said the government needed to consider the train pro-

ject’s ‘‘whole of life’’.

‘‘They need to consider all the multiplier effects of building them here,’’ he said. ‘‘The jobs it

would create, the tax it would generate, they’ve got to add it all in – other countries take

those things into account when considering projects like this”.

Tony Cade said that…”the government

needed to consider reten on of

manufacturing capabili es, job reten on

and crea on, and longer term sustain-

ment issues to support the manufacture

of the carriages in the Hunter”.

JSA sponsored Jets Recipient of the Golden Boot Award Congratulations to JSA sponsored Jets player Adam

Taggart who was the recipient of the Golden Boot

Award and the Young Player of the Year Award at this

year’s FFA A-League & W-League Awards. Adam has

also been selected in Australia’s World Cup team who

will take on the world’s best in Brazil.

DSI Commence Major Facility Upgrades There has been much activity at DYWIDAG Systems International’s Bennetts Green facility. DSI’s engineering team replaced two stamping presses with state-of-the-art 300 ton presses in March this year and further upgrades are planned for the installation of robotics, a plasma cutter and a new state of the art friction bolt production line.

It was decided to replace the old presses; one was forty two years old and the other fifty one years old. Despite their age they were still performing thanks to DSI’s excellent maintenance team, nevertheless innovation and enhanced processing would provide numerous cost saving advantages to DSI’s production facility.

These cost saving improvements included rapid tool changes, significant reductions in down time and a doubling of output for some products. The new presses where located onto a purpose built underfloor scrap conveyer to again afford enhancements to the production and planning schedules.

The presses weighed 38t each and had to be lowered through the factory roof into position with a 250t mobile crane. The crane required 97t of counterweights for the lift which were delivered into the DSI yard on five semi-trailers. As you could imagine removing and replacing the roof as well as co-ordination of the lifts, along with precise location of the machines took a well organised team to complete the entire evolution in just six hours.

Michael Sharpe Proudly Flies the Flag for Rotary HunterNet director, Michael Sharpe from Sharpe Bros. carried the Australian Flag and led the Parade of Flags into the Rotary International Convention at Sydney Olympic Park in front of visitors from all around the world on June 1. Since 1910 Rotarians have gathered annually, and this year the convention came to Sydney where Rotarians gathered from more than 150 countries. Rotary clubs from around the world provide outstanding service to the community and this convention provided a great opportunity for like-minded Rotarians to connect like Michael who continues to give his all for the local community as demonstrated earlier this year when he raised significant funds for the Cancer Council through his participation in Dancing with the Stars. “I was very proud to carry the Australian Flag and later that evening I had dinner with a delegation from Edogawa, Japan (Gosford Sister City) and the following night I joined around 50 visiting Rotarians from the United States who were planning to drive around NSW,” said Mr Sharpe.

Hunter Defence Conference is an Outstanding Success

The 2014 HUNTER DEFENCE CONFERENCE as part of the Hunter Innovation Forum, supported by NSW Trade & Invest-ment, HunterNet, Hunter Business Chamber and RDA Hunter rolled out Newcastle’s world class Hunter Defence Conference on 21 and 22 May.

The conference was excellent opportunity for Defence industry, and in particular SMEs, to hear about the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft (Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II) as it will impact the Hunter Region with presentations by AVM Kym Osley, Head Capability Transition, Air Force on the capability.

In addition, attendees were provided with updates on current and future Land and Maritime Projects, other regional activities, Defence opportunities, innovation and business improvement workshops.

As in previous years, the event involved carefully selected input from public sector, private sector, government, universities and professional organisations providing attendees current information to help break in and/or sustain their business in the Defence sector. The particular focus was what local businesses can do to prepare for the F-35 and the likely major impact the new capability will have for our region. The event offered a fantastic oppor-tunity to network amongst key influencers in our region.

The conference attracted 180 delegates over the two days. It was an opportunity for SMEs to hear about current Defence opportunities, diversification, innovation and skilling in supporting Defence. The conference, now in its third year, was opened by Tim Owen AM, Member for Newcastle. The forty plus speakers included the Defence Materiel organisa-tions, Lockheed Martin and the University.

A Networking session included a gun firing at Fort Scratchley followed by a dinner on Wednesday with a presentation, 100 Years of Military Aviation”, Guest Speaker, Air Commodore Tony Grady, Commander Air Combat Group. There was fund raising of $1,100 and donation of $2,000 each given to Legacy and Soldier On by Tony Cade, CEO HunterNet on behalf the delegates. Initial planning was supported by the HunterNet Defence Forum Chairs, Bret Barton (Nova), Jamie Young (Aurecon), Jenny Taylor. (ATSA), Bede Boyle (Manufacturship), Judy Alexander (University); and Ian Dick. The coordination, planning was com-pleted by Ian and Jamie Young, who carried out a great job as MC of the event, with support provided by HunterNet and the Hunter Business Chamber. Congratulations to Ian and Jamie for organising this world class conference.

The conference would not proceed without the support of the sponsors with over twenty-three organisations:

Feedback from attendees was very positive. Among a host of comments, here are a few: “It was a great conference...good job on putting together such a successful event. I appreciate you including me and the team in the program”, said AVM K. Osley AM, CSC, Head Capability Transition – AF. “It was a good opportunity for me to talk to participants also. I was impressed by the turnout and the venue - you did a great job pulling this together”, said Brendhan Egan, Director General, Australian Military Sales Office, DMO. “Thanks for the invite and look forward to continue working with HunterNet”, David Wood, Program Leader Defence Technology Innovation, DSTO. “Great work with the conference. I wish I had the time to attend on day one (and the dinner)….maybe next year,” said Richard Hughes, WHS|QA Manager, RPC Technology. “A very interesting and well run conference. Congrats to you and the team who arranged it”, said John L Wilshire, Director JSF Industry Team, Joint Strike Fighter Division.

Kyle Loades takes on NRMA President role

HunterNet member and NRMA Hunter director, Kyle Loades from Auto Advantage says he ready for the challenge to take on a more state wide role when the motoring organisation's President steps down in July.

Wendy Machin has been in the top job for six years, steering the organisation through the global financial crisis and growing its membership to more than 2.5 million.

From July 1, she will step down to the position of Deputy President and hand over the reins to Mr Loades, who says she has left the organisation in a strong position.

"Wendy's done a fantastic job, I've worked very closely with Wendy and will continue to do so, so it'll be focusing on not only the Hunter-wide issues, but state and national infrastructure," he said.

"So that we can reduce congestion and make life easier for motorists around the state and how do we really get it right in terms of petrol pricing."

Mr Loades says he will maintain the focus on road infrastructure and petrol pricing, but will also look at how the NRMA can diversify into other areas.

"An organisation to be viable for the future needs to continue to diversify its services.

"I'll be looking forward to focussing on some innovation on the level of services offered by the NRMA of today and the future."

Latest CommBox Hi Definition Interactive Displays Now Available from Diamond

The Diamond Group recently held a technology showcase attended by several Hunternet members where they unveiled the latest addition to their expanding range of technology solutions – the CommBox interactive HD display panel.

CommBox are Australia’s market leader in the manufacture of Interactive Touchscreens, and Diamond is proud to announce its appointment as a key regional reseller for the product.

These screens are a dynamic tool for customer presentations, internal meetings or staff training. They offer all of the touch and swipe functionality you’re used to off a tablet or iPad, but working on screens ranging from 60”– 85”, so they’re large enough to cater Meeting Room or Boardroom presentations.

The CommBox screens are multitouch, and completely intuitive to use, so really require no formal training…simply connect your laptop and you’re away.

The screens do come with some basic annotation tools, so you can also use them in whiteboard mode with similar functionality to an interactive whiteboard. Certainly, if you’ve ever taken a digital photo of a standard whiteboard at the end of a meeting, then you probably should investigate CommBox.

…and of course, beyond the standard business presentations, these True HD display panels can still take a variety of inputs such as DVD players or Foxtel, offering stunning picture quality (…did someone say Melbourne Cup J!).

ASC Achieve Accreditation Success

ACS Integrated Service Provider is proud to announce another milestone in the history of the company. Continuing in their commitment to excellence, they have achieved the following accreditations:

ISO9001:2008 Quality Management System Requirements

AS4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Requirements

ISO14001:2004 Environmental Management System Requirements

ACS is proud of their commitment to constantly improving safe work practices, the environment and a quality system of management has been recognised with their ISO and Australian Standard Accreditation through Best Practice Certification.

The accreditation confirms that ACS has the systems to deliver a quality service. They acknowledge that systems are one thing, but they also commit to continual improvement to ensure they apply those systems and rectify issues as they may arise.

Revised Business Planning Conference Format Increases Participation

On 29 May 2014, HunterNet held its annual Business Planning Conference at the Fort Scratchley Multi-purpose Centre. This year the conference was condensed in to an after-noon session with an opportunity for networking afterwards. This event is viewed as a key activity to allow members to have direct input into HunterNet's strategic direction and an-nual business plans.

Whilst, the condensed format required significant effort / work from participants, we had 65 participants this eyar. This represents a significant increase on attendance compared to HutnerNet’s 2013 conference.

All input is currently being reviewed for incorporation into 2014 / 2015 Business Plans. A big thank you to our sponsors Chandler Macleod, Liveware and PKF Lawler.

Finally, thanks must go to all attendees for their robust input / participation.

HunterNet gratefully acknowledges the support of our event sponsors

Forgacs Reach a Landmark in Contract

A barge load of steel hull modules left the Port of Newcastle

bound for Adelaide in May as Forgacs marked the half-way point

of its naval destroyer construction contract. The Hobart-class

destroyers are being assembled in Adelaide from hull blocks made there, in Melbourne and

at Forgacs in Newcastle.

A Forgacs spokesperson said Forgacs had built 18 blocks with another 19 to go and that

blocks 401, 403, 405 and 407 left Newcastle recently for Adelaide, where they arrived a

week later. The completion of the four latest destroyer hull modules was marked by a family

day at the company’s Tomago site which was attended by about 1000 people.

‘‘These blocks are all from ship two – to be commissioned as the Brisbane – and have

taken between 12months and 18months to build, with the larger ones taking longer,’’ the

spokesperson said.

‘‘What’s more, we are now doing

work of more complexity, with a

greater degree of fit-out to each

block, than was the case at the

start.’’

Forgacs were also recently

awarded a new contract to build a

30-metre landing craft to be given

to the Kingdom of Tonga as a gift

from Australia. Construction is

due to start in August and be

finished by March next year.

Measuring Your Business Performance

– Identify the Tremors before the Quake Hits! In your business - measurements matter. But what should you measure and what measurements should you avoid?

The HunterNet Business Value Group Forum (Tuesday June 24, 4.30 – 6.00pm at the Hunter Trade and Investment Centre, L3, 251 Wharf Rd, Newcastle) focusses on the key measurements for manufacturers based on world’s best established practices and the systems and approaches used across manufacturing.

The primary purpose of measurement should be to allow you, the leader, to make higher quality decisions faster and control the activity in your business. Our panellists will include Jason Furness from Manufacturship who will outline the key measures that drive operational improvement and Simon Rutherford from PKF Lawler will outline the measures that improve your business value with reference to the Dupont economic value added framework. Case studies will be discussed and as always open discussion is encouraged regarding your own experiences always adds great value to BVG forums. All HunterNet members and their guests are welcome to attend and please bring your current measures with you. There will be light refreshments available. Please email: [email protected] if you wish to attend.

The discussion will centre on:

1. What measurements do you currently use (both financial and non- financial)? 2. What measurements do your peers use?

3. What is best practice in measurements that drive company performance and value? 4. Are there measures that can hurt your business?
