A Letter from the Simon Family JCC Center Director

Dear Friends,

If you are reading this letter, you are taking the first step in learning about the wonderful programs that the Simon Family JCC will be offering throughout the upcoming seasons! Whether you sign up for baby signing, children’s cooking, karate or one of our sports classes we have something for everyone. We are excited our Swim Safe lessons are helping children of all ages to learn to swim and be safe in the water. Also check our group fitness schedule online at www.SimonFamilyJCC.org for the latest class schedule. All of our classes and many upcoming events, such as our December

25th Pancake Breakfast, and the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film presented by Alma and Howard Laderberg are highlighted in this guide.

This year, in addition to our already successful cultural arts events, our programming includes a partnership with Virginia Arts Festival. This partnership will bring the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to the Sandler Center on the evening of April 2. This special performance is also the highlight of the JCC’s “Celebrate Israel” initiative.

“Celebrate Israel” also includes a film documentary, keynote speaker Michael Satloff of the Washington Institute, and our annual community-wide Israel Fest including local vendors, carnival games and rides, authentic Israeli fare and more!! This is a tremendous undertaking, and there are a variety of corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities available. After the spring programming season, we will kick off the summer with our Annual President’s Cup Golf Tournament.

Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. To learn more about making your gift and supporting our programs or scholarship funds, please contact Evan Levitt, our Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or [email protected].

I am proud to present our 2014 Winter/Spring Program Guide. Enjoy and see you soon!

Sincerely,Scott Katz, MSWCenter DirectorSimon Family JCC

Jewish Holiday DescriptionsTu B’Shvat: Also called the New Year for Trees, on this arbor day, it is customary to eat fruit from trees that grow in Israel, plant trees and provide money for the planting of trees in Israel.

Purim: The holiday of Purim celebrates the Book of Esther in the Bible, which relates a plot by the wicked Haman against the Jews and his eventual defeat and demise through the efforts of Mordechai and Queen Esther. It is a day of wearing costumes and partying.

Pesach/Passover: Passover recalls the deliverance of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Jews around the world celebrate their freedom at the Seder table as the story of the exodus from Egypt is told.

Swimming Lessons for ChildrenThe Swim Safe Program is created around sound swimming fundamentals and promotes active learning in each class. The teaching philosophy is based on our instructors’ understanding of how to teach swimming for age appropriate levels of development. This program eases children into the water so that they feel safe and comfortable in the pool

as beginners, and, as they progress, it works on their technique and form. Our goal is to establish a comfort level and interest in the sport, so that children develop a life-long interest in the sport of swimming. For more information or to register, call 757-321-2316.

Volunteer and Community Service OpportunitiesBEAr – BE A rEADEr The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 14 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving seven schools with more than 75 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteer mentors go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep, and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills.

Please contact the BEAR Coordinator, at 757-321-2303 to mentor a child or make a monetary donation to the program. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of Build-A-Bear, Target, First Book and many local individuals just like you!

TrIBuTE CArDSSending a tribute card is an excellent way to honor a memory or an accomplishment while simultaneously supporting the Simon Family JCC. These cards, featuring artwork by local artists, can be sent for any reason including birthdays, B’nai mitzvahs, graduations, and more! Tribute cards are processed within 24 hours of the request. Your minimum donation of $18 may be applied to any program at the JCC. You may request a tribute card online at www.SimonFamilyJCC.org or by contacting Rebecca Bickford, JCC Development Associate, at 757-452-3180 or [email protected].

JCC ANNuAL PrESIDENTS’ CuP GOLF TOurNAmENT JuNE 9, 2014Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts a golf tournament fundraiser in honor of those who have served their community as President of the JCC. We recognize that their combined leadership has allowed our center to grow and thrive for more than 60 years. We, as a community, are grateful for the time and energy that the Past Presidents have donated to the center. The portraits of our Past Presidents hang in the JCC Fitness Center hallway. The monies raised through the Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament help the Simon Family JCC provide special services through before and after school care, summer day camp, youth sports and swim classes, exercise classes for women recovering from breast cancer, scholarships for both membership and camp, so much more. This year’s tournament will be held on June 9, 2014. Keep an eye out for more information. For information on becoming a Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament sponsor, please contact Evan Levitt, JCC Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or [email protected].
