First-year head coach Tim Koth took time to answer some questions with Assistant SID Cameron Weidenthaler prior to the 2014 season.

CW: What was attractive to you about Wayne State University?

TK: There were many things, but I think a couple that stand out are the size and location of the university, and the academic offerings and reputation. Being a large university setting in a major metropolis I believe to be a strong recruiting tool, as our brand is very visible. Academically – being a Carnegie 1 research university that offers 370 majors in 13 college and universities across our campus really expands the recruiting base for us. All this being said – Wayne State offered me a strong opportunity to build a very successful program – and that is exciting to me.

CW: What are your biggest strengths as a head

coach?TK: 27 seasons of collegiate experience is helpful! I think

I understand what players go through on a daily basis, and have learned how to get the most out of each player. In the

last few years, I think I have gained a better understanding of how to blend personalities – that may be very different from each other – into one group that wants the same thing – success.

CW: What type of student-athletes are you looking

for when you are recruiting?TK: The most clear answer to this is – the best athletes

possible. So I have certain criteria I am looking for at each position. But more than that – I look for people who have intrinsic motivation; are very competitive; and demonstrate the ability to work with their teammates and coaches to achieve success.

CW: Who was someone who made a major impact

on your career? TK: There are many – but if you want to know just one

– it would have to be John Price. He was – at the time – the men’s coach at my alma mater and he gave me an opportunity to get involved in every aspect of coaching at the collegiate level. So I knew right from the start the work ethic it took to be successful, and I learned much in that time about success and failure.

CW: What is your favorite volleyball memory?TK: There are so many good ones – I don’t know if I

have a favorite – so I will give you a recent one. Winning the 2012 GLIAC Championship on our home floor in front of about 1200 fans with a team that had been preseason picked seventh in the conference. It was just a huge sense of accomplishment for our players and staff.

CW: What can fans expect from your squads?TK: Hopefully A LOT of wins! But if you are referring to

style, I expect for you to see a confident, aggressive game, a team that has a bit of “swag” but definitely a team that will not give up on any play.

CW: What characteristics do NCAA Tournament

teams possess?

SEASON PREVIEW WITH COACH KOTH

Senior Carlee Hunt

Page 13: 2014 Wayne State University Volleyball Media Guide

2014 MEDIA GUIDE WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL | 11

TK: Many – but the mostly successful teams in the Tournament are always in system – which means they serve, pass, and play great defense. They also understand time and score – so they know when to be very aggressive, and when to play smart and make their opponent work. They also are fearless on big important points.

CW: Preview the GLIAC in 2014 (i.e. title contenders).TK: As always in these types of analysis – it is very

subjective. So what is “on paper” and what happens can be two very different things. Going into 2014, I think very clearly Grand Valley State and Ferris State will be the teams to beat. They both return a major portion of their roster, and both are coming off deep NCAA Tournament runs – which are such valuable experiences for their players. After those two teams, I think there is a group of programs that could make a strong push to be at or near the top – but they all have some question marks. I think this group would include Ashland, Saginaw Valley State, Northern Michigan, Hillsdale, Findlay, and Wayne State. I also look for programs like Michigan Tech, Malone, and Ohio Dominican to be improved. Ultimately the team that is healthy and peaking

in November will have the best chance for post season success.

CW: What needs to happen for WSU to be where we

want to be towards the end of November?TK: This is pretty simple – two things.First - we need to be healthy and have everyone able to

train on a consistent basis. We will be young, so mental and physical training is important for these players to be able to reach their current potential.

Second – we need to have a successful start. Our GLIAC schedule is front loaded with the first five conference matches at the Matthaei. Defending our home court will very much set us up for postseason opportunities, as we will be an improved team by November.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for over 40 years. The conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports (11 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University.

Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980.

After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992.

After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990.

After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school.

Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and

Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995.

On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III.

The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, leaving the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year.

The GLIAC moved on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members.

On July 1, 2010, Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, entered the GLIAC. Two years later, a pair of schools located in the Canton, Ohio area - Malone University and Walsh University - joined the conference.

The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator.

The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2014-15. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year.

SEASON TIMELINE

AUGUST 2Jessica DeLeeuw, Carlee Hunt, Jamie Goryca and Madison Reeves are named team captains.

AUGUST 7The volleyball program is honored by the AVCA with a Team Academic Award. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

AUGUST 27The GLIAC released its 2013 Preseason Volleyball Poll as voted on by the league’s coaches. Wayne State University received three first-place votes and 44 total points and were predicted to finish second in the GLIAC South Division. The three first-place votes and 44 points both rank third out of all 16 teams.

SEPTEMBER 7WSU knocked off sixth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State in five sets and swept Saint Leo as play concluded in the GVSU Laker Classic. The Warriors start the season and finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.

SEPTEMBER 14The Warriors were unable to find the win column on either day at the UW-Parkside Tournament. #19 Indianapolis (2-4) started the day by sweeping the Warriors (25-22, 25-19, 25-12) and Lewis defeated WSU 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 25-27, 25-21).

SEPTEMBER 20WSU began its GLIAC schedule with a 3-0 sweep at Lake Erie. The Warriors trailed 18-14 in the third set but an 11-4 run gave the Warriors their third sweep of the season. As a team, WSU hit .250 compared to Lake Erie’s .164 hitting percentage.

SEPTEMBER 21WSU completed the weekend sweep with a 3-2 win at Ashland. The Warriors took set one 25-21 and set two 25-20. The Eagles responded by winning the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-22, forcing a fifth-set tiebreaker. WSU was able to stop the Ashland comeback and take set five, 15-10. Bulkiewicz collected her third consecutive and 26th career double-double with 23 kills and 20 digs. With her 23 kills increased her career total to 1,044 careers kills, which is just 12 shy of 10th place all-time in program history.

SEPTEMBER 24Bulkiewicz was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week following her performance that weekend where she led Wayne State University to a 2-0 record with a sweep at Lake Erie and a five set-thriller at Ashland. Bulkiewicz paced the Warriors’ attack with 38 kills (4.75/set) over the weekend with a .235 hitting percentage and 31 digs (3.88/set).

the Warriors took the next three 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22.

NOVEMBER 2WSU snapped an eight-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over Tiffin inside the Matthaei Center. WSU took an exciting first set 30-28 before Tiffin answered with a 25-23 set two victory. The Warriors cruised to take set three, 23-15, and the fourth set, 25-14.

NOVEMBER 7The Capital One Academic All-District Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) were announced and student-athlete Kristen Bulkiewicz was named to the CoSIDA Volleyball Academic All-District (IV) Team. She is now an Academic All-American nominee. The senior is majoring in elementary education and carries a 3.62 cumulative GPA. NOVEMBER 16The Green & Gold swept Lake Erie inside the Matthaei Center. The Warriors’ three seniors, Nicole Arends, Kristen Bulkiewicz and Jessica DeLeeuw were honored prior to the match for their hard work and commitment to the program. Despite the 3-0 win, WSU will miss the GLIAC Tournament for the first time under head coach Phil Nickel. Saginaw Valley also won that day to secure the eighth and final seed in the GLIAC Tournament.

NOVEMBER 24The league office announced its All-GLIAC teams and two Wayne State University student-athletes collected postseason honors. Senior Kristen Bulkiewicz was an All-GLIAC First Team selection for the third time in her career and sophomore Heather Weiss was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Bulkiewicz led the Warriors with 404 kills (3.67/

She finished her career with 1,323 career kills, which ranks second all-time in program history. Bulkiewicz collected 34 career double-doubles including 14 in 2013. Weiss concluded a breakout sophomore season with 242 kills (2.20/set) and a .258 hitting percentage. Weiss also totaled 79 digs and 66 total blocks.

DECEMBER 29The Wayne State University volleyball program had eight members honored with GLIAC All-Academic Excellence or All-Academic accolades. Six WSU volleyball student-athletes garnered GLIAC All-Academic Excellence honors (student-athletes that have a cumulative GPA of 3.50-4.0). Seniors Nicole Arends, Kristen Bulkiewicz and Jessica DeLeeuw, junior Jamie Goryca, along with sophomores Madison Reeves and Heather Weiss all were selected to the All-Academic Excellence squad. Arends, Bulkiewicz and DeLeeuw each have been All-Academic Excellence Team selections all three seasons eligible (freshmen are not eligible). Kelsey Bonewits earned All-Academic honors while junior Carlee Hunt was also named to the All-Academic Team (student-athletes that have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0-3.49).

FEBRUARY 6Tim Koth was named the 13th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program, which will have its 40th season this fall. The announcement was made by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. Koth comes to Wayne State after serving as the head coach at fellow GLIAC member Northwood University the last 10 seasons (2004-13). Prior to his arrival in Midland, Koth spent eight years (1996-2003) at GLVC member Quincy coaching both the women’s Division II program and the men’s Division I program. After leading the Timberwolves to a 21-11 record in 2013, his overall record at Northwood was 175-124. His Northwood squads qualified for seven GLIAC tournaments and five NCAA tournaments in his tenure.

The 2014 season will mark the 40th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 673 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament.

After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland).

Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the single-season record for victories. She was named GLIAC Coach of the Year.

The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark.

Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11-year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842).

In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham.

Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces, and was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award.

As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU.

Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year. The Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Brooks joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season

Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a program-best 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium.

Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris, a 2012 WSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was the standout on that squad, becoming the second All-American in

program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987.

In 2008, the first season under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an All-American after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs.

In 2009, Wayne State went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997.

The Warriors finished in second place in the South Division in 2010 and hosted Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. Sophomore All-American Katarzyna Sak became the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330.

Including a 14-14 record in 2011 and an 18-13 record the following, Nickel’s squads finished .500 or better overall and qualified for the conference tournament in each of the first five years of his tenure.

In 2012, WSU collected its first GLIAC Tournament win since 2008 with a victory over second-seeded Ferris State. The Warriors knocked off #6 Southwest Minnesota State to highlight the 2013 season. WSU missed the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2006. Kristen Bulkiewicz finished with 1,323 career kills, which ranks second all-time in program history. Bulkiewicz collected 34 career double-doubles including 14 in 2013.

WE KNOW THAT ENOUGH WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH. WE’LL ALWAYS NEED TO GO FASTER, BECOME STRONGER AND GET BETTER, NO MATTER HOW FAST, HOW STRONG, OR HOW GOOD WE GET. THAT’S WHY WE’LL NEVER STOP PUSHING. THE MORE WE PURSUE, THE MORE WE CRAVE THE PURSUIT, THE MORE WE GO, THE HARDER IT IS TO STOP. BUT THAT’S FINE BY US, BECAUSE WE NEVER INTEND TO.

STOP AT NEVER.
