UCF Softball ComplexSince its groundbreaking on March 14, 2006, the UCF Softball Complex is where the Knights call home. The state-of-the-art facility speaks volumes for how far the program has come under the direction of head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie and where it is headed. The 600-capacity stadium is one of the finest in Conference USA and on the national scene.

The field is professionally manicured by the UCF Facilities and Operations staff and in-cludes a covered batting pavilion, roomy dugouts, home and visitor bullpens and an out-field fence lined with palm trees.

UCF student-athletes have access to everything they need to prepare for gameday at the UCF Softball Complex. The Knights have a spacious locker room, a lounge area complete with a television, couches and chairs, an equipment room and their own training room complete with a top-notch athletic training staff.

Along with having comfortable offices for each coach, the UCF Softball Complex also has a conference room, a video room and locker rooms for both the coaching staff and for umpires. The press box at the stadium has room enough for home and visitor radio broad-casts, as well as multi-level media seating.

On game days, fans have access to a ticket booth, concession stand and gift shop, while also being able to participate in multiple promotions and events throughout the season.

Head Coach - 13th Season with the Knights

Renee Luers-Gillispie is in her 13th year at the helm of the UCF softball

program in 2013-2014. Since starting the program in 2002, Gillispie has led the team to two conference championships and four NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. The Knights and Gillispie have a record of 431-309-1 over the last 12 years, while Gillispie owns a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) record of 683-513-3 and an NCAA re-cord of 636-485-3.

Gillispie led the Knights to their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012. The Black and Gold earned 10 wins over fellow NCAA Tournament opponents to earn just the second at-large birth in pro-gram history. UCF also set a new pro-gram record for home wins in 2012 by going 27-4 at the UCF Softball Complex.

Gillispie guided the Knights to their third appearance in the NCAA Tourna-ment and their second appearance in the Conference USA Championship Game in 2010. The Black and Gold defeated No. 7 Alabama, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 22 Ohio State and earned the pro-gram’s first at-large bid into the Region-al Tournament.

Gillispie guided her squad to its most successful season on record in 2008, as the Knights claimed the program’s first Conference USA Championship crown with a victory over No. 9 Houston on its home field, and fought its way to the NCAA Regional Championship Game with a win over No. 1 Florida. The team’s 49 wins on the season were the most in program history, while its 26 votes in the final NFCA Coaches Poll were its most tallies to date. Gillispie also posted her 500th career win in 2008.

The Black and Gold cruised through the C-USA Softball Championship with a 3-0 record, with freshmn Tiffany Lane earning tournament MVP honors for her play throughout the event. Allison Kime, Breanne Javier, Marquita Council and Hillary Barrow joined Lane on the all-tournament team, while the squad earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

In 2005, Gillispie led the Knights to their first Atlantic Sun Tournament Champi-

onship and the team received the con-ference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, the Knights picked up their first postsea-son win with a 5-3 victory over Florida on their home field. In the regular season, UCF picked up wins over No. 8 Washing-ton, No. 20 Florida International and No. 20 Georgia Tech in addition to the pro-gram’s first win over in-state rival Florida State. Stephanie Best was named A-Sun

Player of the Year for the third-consecu-tive year after leading the nation in home runs (26).

Best was the first UCF softball player to be drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch league when the New England Riptide took her in the fourth round. She ended her career with a .384 batting average, .756 slugging percentage, 71 home runs, 285 hits, 216 runs scored and 213 RBI.

During the 2004 season, Gillispie guided the Knights to a No. 30 ranking in the NFCA Coaches Poll and the team fin-ished the season with a 42-21 overall re-cord. Gillispie earned her 100th win at UCF, while several players earned all-conference and all-region awards. In the 2003 season, the Knights compiled a 37-31 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the A-Sun. Best was named A-Sun Player of the Year and was recognized by the NFCA on the all-south region team, while pitcher Dottie Cupp and Shinhoster re-ceived A-Sun All-Conference honors.

During the inaugural season in 2002, the Black and Gold had a 46-19 record and posted a 21-game winning streak, setting an A-Sun record. Cupp and Shinhoster were named all-conference and all-region while Best earned all-conference.

To date, Gillispie’s players have earned 23 all-conference honors, 12 all-freshman honors, three conference player of the

year awards, one co-newcomer of the year award and one freshman of the year honor. Three former Knights have also gone on to play in the NPF.

Academically, UCF has garnered 10 Co-SIDA Academic All-District honors, ten C-USA All-Academic Team accolades, 90 league honor roll members and 17 ac-ademic medal recipeints under Gillispie.

Prior to UCF, Gillispie spent four years building the Texas Tech program. She led the Red Raiders to a No. 17 national ranking in 1998 and a No. 24 ranking the following season. Her teams earned runner-up honors at the 1999 NCAA Re-gional Championship, third place in the 1999 Big 12 Conference Tournament and fourth place in the 1998 conference tour-nament.

In addition to her successful career at Texas Tech, Gillispie rebuilt softball programs at Bradley University and Jo-liet Junior College. In 1993, she took over the Bradley program that finished 12-25 in 1992 and in two short years posted a record-breaking 33-8 season. The 1994 team also finished in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference and was ranked fifth in the nation for winning percentage.

Gillispie received N4C Conference Coach of the Year honors as head coach of the 1992 Joliet (Ill.) Junior College team that won the conference champi-onship. She had inherited a 2-29 team in 1991 and transformed that same team into an NJCAA Regional Runner-up with a 32-12 record by 1992.

In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, Gillispie has served as an interna-tional speaker for the Italian Softball and Baseball Federation Coaches Conven-tion and also traveled to Athens, Greece

as a guest coach for the Greek National Team in 2001.

While she directs her own softball camps and clinics, she has also worked as an instructor with the Griffey Inter-national Gold Medal Camp and Higher Ground Camps and Clinics under Brit-ish National coach Bobby Simpson.

Gillispie began her playing career as a pitcher at Kirkwood Community Col-lege in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she pitched in two NJCAA National Cham-pionship Tournaments. In 1981, she was ranked ninth nationally as a NJCAA pitcher.

Moving on to West Texas A&M, she set nine career pitching records including most wins, most strikeouts and most saves.

In 2005, Gillispie was inducted into the West Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame.

Gillispie and her husband, Mark, have been married for 31 years and reside in Oviedo.

Hillary BarrowAssistant Coach - Second Season with the Knights

UCF’s all-time leader in sacrifice flies, Hillary Bar-row rejoined the Knights as an as-

sistant coach in August 2012.

A native of Miami, Fla., Barrow was a mem-ber of the UCF softball team from 2007-10, and ranks in the top in in several major of-fensive categories including games (4th), runs scored (7th), hits (9th), doubles (2nd), home runs (8th), RBIs (4th) and walks (6th).

Aside from those career records, Barrow was a key member of the 2008 Conference USA Championship team and also the 2010 NCAA Tournament team. Barrow was named to the All-Tournament team in both of those seasons, proving her worth as a clutch player.

After graduating UCF in 2010 with a major in communications and a minor in digital media, Barrow spent 2011 as an assist soft-

ball coach at Saint Cloud High School.

As a senior in 2010, Barrow helped the Knights reach their third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their second ap-pearance in the Conference USA Champi-onship Game in 2010. The Black and Gold defeated No. 7 Alabama, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 22 Ohio State and earned the pro-gram’s first at-large bid into the regional tournament that season. Barrow for her ef-forts was named to the All-C-USA Second Team.

As a sophomore, Barrow helped her team-mates achieve their most successful season on record in 2008, as the Knights claimed the program’s first Conference USA Cham-pionship crown with a victory over No. 9 Houston on its home field, while fighting its way to the NCAA Regional Championship Game with a win over No. 1 Florida. The team’s 49 wins on the season were the most in program history, while its 26 votes in the final NFCA Coaches Poll were its most tal-

lies to date. UCF also posted 500th all-time win in 2008.

The Black and Gold cruised through the C-USA Softball Championship with a 3-0 record, Barrow joining teammate Tiffany Lane on the all-tournament team, while the squad earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Joel ChimelisVolunteer Coach - Fourth Season with the Knights

Joel Chimelis enters his fourth season as a vol-unteer assis-tant coach for

the UCF softball program. He works with the infielders and hitters from September through the end of March. Chimelis is also a minor league hitting coach for the Houston Astros organization, where he will be enter-ing his 11th year as a professional baseball hitting coach.

Last season, Chimelis served as the hitting coach for the Single-A Quad City River Ban-dits, who won the 2013 Midwest League Championship with an 81-57 league record.

Chimelis began coaching professional base-ball in 2004 for the Washington Nationals after retiring from playing professionally for 14 seasons all over the world.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Chimelis began his playing career at Eastern District High School in New York, before signing with Howard Junior College in 1985. While at Howard, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round, but chose to play for the University of Texas.

While with the Longhorns, he posted a .343 batting average and was an All-Southwest Conference shortstop. For his play that season, the Oakland A’s drafted Chimelis in the 11th round and he went on to play in their minor league system for four sea-sons through Double-AA for the Huntsville Stars.

After four years with the Stars, Chimelis was traded to the San Francisco Giants where he played at AA, AAA and reached the Major League level, briefly. In 1994, while playing shortstop for the Shreveport Captains in the AA-Texas League, he was selected to the

All-Star Team where he led the league in doubles (43) and hit .295 for the season.

In 1996 Chimelis played in the AAA Mexi-can League with the Oaxaca Warriors and also played briefly for the New York Mets AAA team, the Norfolk Tides, where he hit .382 in 25 games.

In 1997 Chimelis played professionally in Taiwan and spent 1998 in the Korean Pro-fessional Baseball League. From 1999-2002 he, once again, played in the AAA Mexican League for the Laredo Owls, where he hit over .300 in each of his three seasons and posted 30, 19 and 15 homerun records, re-spectively.

Chimelis has been married for 19 years to his wife Carmen. They are proud parents of three daughters, Adriana (19), Nichole (16) and Gabriela (13) and reside in Orlando.
