Dear Potential New Member,

On behalf of TCU Fraternity & Sorority Life, welcome to the primary Panhellenic Recruitment process! We are very excited that you are interested in becoming a member of our wonderful community. This week will give you the opportunity to learn more about each of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) organizations on our campus and the values that they uphold as they strive to elevate our larger community.

We look forward to meeting you at the mandatory orientation meeting for potential new members (PNM) at 9:00PM on Saturday, August 16th in the Brown Lupton University Union (BLUU) Ballroom. If you are unsure how to find the BLUU, you can visit www.maps.tcu.edu. There will also be Rho Gammas (recruitment guides) stationed around campus to help any PNMs (that’s you!) who need assistance finding the BLUU. Dress for the meeting is casual. There will not be any active sorority women there; so please dress comfortably- think Nike shorts and a t-shirt.

At the meeting, we will host a guest speaker, Ginny Carroll, founder of Circle of Sisterhood. We will also provide you with detailed information about recruitment, review the schedule, and discuss sorority life at TCU. Rest assured: all of your questions will be answered! You should plan to be at the general meeting for about an hour. Following the meeting, you will meet with your specific Rho Gamma group. You can expect to be done with orientation around 11:00pm.

On Sunday, August 17th the first formal rounds of recruitment begin. You will attend a brief meeting at 1:00pm in the BLUU Ballroom and then we will dismiss each group to begin visiting our wonderful Panhellenic chapters.

Dear Potential New Member, On behalf of the Texas Christian University Panhellenic Community, I would like to welcome you to TCU! Becoming a Horned Frog was the best decision I ever made and I hope you will find the same! Congratulations on your decision to participate in Panhellenic primary recruitment. You are considering joining the largest female organization on TCU’s campus! My name is Margaux Hebert and I have the honor of serving as the 2014 Panhellenic Council President, which is the governing body of the twelve National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities on campus. At TCU we are fortunate to have twelve NPC sororities on campus, representing approximately 2,500 women on campus. Our membership numbers are evidence of the strong influence that sorority women have on campus and we are very proud of our Greek community. Sororities at TCU are values based organizations and each have something unique to offer. You will find the Panhellenic community is composed of well-rounded women who strive for excellence in academics, campus involvement and community service while creating meaningful and long lasting relationships. I encourage you to take full advantage of the recruitment experience and all that it has to offer. It is my hope that by the end of the week you will meet some new friends, feel more connected to TCU, learn more about the Panhellenic Sorority community firsthand and hopefully find a home away from home on campus! Active Member: An undergraduate sorority/fraternity member who has been initiated by his/her chapter and is in good standing with Texas Christian University and their national organization.

Alumna/Alumni: An initiated member of a sorority or fraternity who is no longer an active member of the collegiate chapter, but remains a member of the organization.

Badge: Pin worn by an initiated member.

Bid: A written invitation to join a sorority or fraternity.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB): A process where bids may be extended and accepted any time during the school year other than during Formal Recruitment.

Formal Recruitment: A designated membership recruitment period comprised of a series of events hosted by each sorority or fraternity, scheduled and governed by the Council.

Fraternity: A values-based, social organization typically designated by Greek letters.

Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL): Fraternity and Sorority Life is a department within the TCU Division of Student Affairs that advises the five governing councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), Independent Greek Council (IGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).

Initiation: A ceremony during which new members receive life-long membership privileges and become an active member of the organization.

Legacy: A woman whose mother, sister, and/or grandmother, is an alumna or active member of a National Panhellenic Conference sorority. Legacy status differs by organization.

Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA): A document each potential new member completes immediately following the Preference Round of events stating her membership preferences. The potential new member ranks the sororities she would accept a bid from, listing the one which she most

wants to join first and the other(s) in preferential order. This is a binding agreement, stating that the potential new member is willing to accept a bid from any sorority she lists. This agreement is binding until the next “primary” period at the institution – typically one calendar year.

National Panhellenic Conference (NPC): A conference composed of 26 women’s inter/national organizations, each of which is autonomous as a social Greek-letter society of collegiate and alumnae members.

New Member: A woman who has accepted a Panhellenic bid but is not yet an initiated member.

Panhellenic Exec: The group of eight college women who oversee the Texas Christian University Panhellenic Association and who give up their sorority association during the recruitment process to organize and assist the potential new members.

Philanthropy: An organization’s designated cause to which they serve and/or raise money.

Potential New Member (PNM): Any woman interested in becoming a Panhellenic member who is eligible to join according to the Panhellenic Council’s requirements.

Quota: Maximum number of new members a sorority may pledge. Quota is the same for all Panhellenic chapters and is set through the recruitment process by the Panhellenic Council.

Recommendation/Reference: A written letter or statement from an alumna following her organization’s guidelines introducing and recommending a potential new member for membership.

Recruitment Counselors (Rho Gammas): Panhellenic women carefully selected and trained to guide potential new members through the formal recruitment process. Rho Gammas disaffiliate from their respective chapters to remain completely neutral during the formal recruitment process.

Single Intentional Preference: Occurs when a potential new member attends more than one preference event but only lists one choice on her MRABA.

Panhellenic CouncilWhen you join one of the twelve National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities at TCU, you also become a member of the Panhellenic Council. The TCU Panhellenic Council is the umbrella organization for the NPC sororities chartered at TCU and is responsible for organizing activities of mutual concern and interest to all the sororities on campus.

NPC, founded in 1902, is the encompassing organization for 26 inter/national women’s fraternities and sororities. Each member group is autonomous as a social, Greek-letter society of college women and alumnae. Members are represented on more than 600 college and university campuses throughout the United States and Canada and in more than 5,300 alumnae associations, making up more than 3 million sorority women in the world.

Panhellenic Executive Board

Texas Christian University Panhellenic Association Executive Board is comprised of eight women from different chapters in TCU’s Panhellenic community. Each woman is elected for a specific position that benefits the Panhellenic community as a whole. The executive board also holds biweekly council meetings with representatives from each chapter that keep the chapters informed about upcoming events, accomplishments of women, as well as the entire Greek community at TCU. Lastly, the executive board serves as recruitment team for Fall recruitment.

Recruitment Guides( R h o G a m m a s )

Recruitment guides, known as Rho Gammas, are elected women from the Panhellenic Greek community who disaffiliate from their respected chapters during the recruitment process. Their mission is to guide Potential New Members (that’s you!) through recruitment. Rho Gammas are selected through an application process based on leadership abilities, counseling skills, and passion for the Panhellenic community. Approximately 95 women are chosen each spring to undergo training for the position of Rho Gamma. Recruitment guides will be available all throughout the recruitment process as guides, unbiased listeners, and friends.

Week Attire at a GlanceR o u n d O n e ( D a y 1 a n d 2 )

What to expect: Round one, on both day 1 and 2, is scholarship round. This round will be longest, but it is split up into two days. Make sure you take detailed notes so you can remember each chapter you visited. On day 1 and 2, you will be visiting all twelve chapters with your Rho Gammas and your recruitment group. You may talk to more than one active member inside each chapter and they will be asking you questions to get to know you better! This round is also the shortest, so make sure to ask any questions you may have! There will be loud cheering when you enter and when you exit! The women have been practicing songs all semester, so enjoy!

What to wear: You’ll receive a white Panhellenic t-shirt when you attend PNM orientation on August 16th. Pair it with some nice shorts or a cute skirt that are light (it is going to be HOT!) Try to avoid short jean shorts and tight skirts - you want to look presentable! Make sure you wear comfortable shoes that are already broken in because you and your group will be doing a lot of walking today!

R o u n d T w o ( D a y 3 )

What to expect: On day three you will receive a schedule in the morning. On round two, a PNM can visit up to 9 chapters, but it is rare to have a full schedule. You must attend every chapter on your schedule to remain in the process. Because everyone received their own schedule, you will be traveling on your own from now on. But don’t worry - Rho gammas will be stationed around Worth Hills to direct you! There is also a map located at the end of your booklet! On round two, the chapters will focus on their philanthropy. This is the time to talk about service and the programs you participated in during high school. This round you may talk to two or three women per chapter; this day is where the members get to know you personally!

What to wear: On day three, it is appropriate to wear a sundress or a cute skirt and top combo! You will still be doing a lot of walking, so flats or sandals are suggested. Check out our Pinterest page for ideas for outfits!

Week Attire at a Glance

R o u n d T h r e e ( D a y 4 )

What to expect: Just like round two, you will receive your individual schedule in the morning. On this day, you will visit a maximum of 6 chapters. This day is devoted to learning what makes each chapter different from the others! There will be a funny/ entertaining skit for you to watch as well! Ask questions this round - find out why the active member joined that sorority and what sisterhood means to them.

What to wear: Think sunday brunch! Many women wear sundresses this day with wedges! If you choose to wear heels or wedges, it may be smart to bring flip flops you can wear on the walk between chapters and the walk back to the BLUU!

R o u n d F o u r ( D a y 5 )

What to expect: Again, you will receive your individual schedule and the beginning of the day. By this time, you have probably mastered being on your own! On round four, you will be visiting a maximum of 3 chapters. Like before, you must attend all the events to remain eligible! This day is all about finding what chapter fits you the best. You will be treated to special refreshments from each chapter you visit. There will probably be songs sung by each chapter as well. This is a very sentimental time for all the active chapter members, especially seniors. Once you are finished with your events, you will proceed to the BLUU. It is very important to talk to your Rho Gammas before you leave The Greek. You will not be able to talk to your Rho Gammas once you enter the BLUU.

What to wear: Preference round, round four, is the dressiest of days. A nice cocktail dress (like a homecoming or graduation dress) are the usual go-to for this round. Typically chapter members wear black or white dresses, so you may want adjust your wardrobe so you do not blend in! Avoid long prom dresses, it’s still HOT HOT HOT!

B i d D a y ( D a y 6 )

What to expect: You will arrive and find your recruitment group. From there, your Rho Gammas will pass out your bid card (the card with your chapter on it!) You will have to sit (yes sit) on the envelope until you are instructed to open them! Then- chaos! Welcome to the TCU Panhellenic community.

What to wear: On bid day you can wear any shorts you want! It would be a good idea to be comfortable, you never know what the bid day activity is going to be!

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

Watches: Out of respect for our active chapter members, we ask that you do not wear watches at any time during recruitment. This is to make sure that you aren’t unintentionally checking the time during an event. Don’t worry about keeping time - all of our recruitment staff including Rho gammas and recruitment team will make sure to keep you on schedule!

Cell Phones: Leave your cell phones in your residence hall! Leaving your phone behind ensures that you will have ample time to interact and befriend other PNMs! This will also allow for you to make a decision yourself, without confiding with anyone via text. If, for some reason, an emergency arises and you need to contact your family, we will work with you based on your individual needs.

Purses: There is no need to bring your purse to the chapters during recruitment. We provide every PNM with a clear plastic bag that will remain under the tent while you are inside the chapters. You will be able to store any make-up, hair brushes, or mints in your plastic bag!

Perfume: You may think perfume would be a good thing, but take my word for it! With so many women in one small space, a huge cloud of different perfumes can be very overwhelming. Leave the perfume, but don’t hesitate to wear deodorant!

“In the mid 1800s in America, the women who founded our sororities stood together for the right to go to college, thus beginning a sorority movement. Now, almost 150 years later and more than 5 million strong, we vow to continue our Founders’ legacy by standing together again to help girls and women go to school around the world.

Circle of Sisterhood is comprised of women, who have in common a college education. We know that access to quality schooling affords a better life for a woman and that of her family. For too many girls and women around the world, access to quality education is often limited. And education is the answer to many of the global issues related to women – poverty, oppression, misogyny, brutality. Ultimately, more and more educated girls will mean stronger and healthier villages, communities and entire countries.
