VARIABLE-SPEEDDRIVES PROGRAM
8/12/2019 2014 South Dakota Variable Speed Drives
2/4Call800-894-9599 today.
If your system doesnt always run
at the same speed, neither should
your motors. MidAmerican Energy
Companys EnergyAdvantageVariable-Speed Drives program
offers rebates for the installation
of variable-speed drive equipment.
Why Should a Variable-SpeedDrive be Installed?
A variable-speed drive is a control device connected toan electric motor in order to match the speed of the motor-driven equipment to the process requirement. Energy savingsare obtained by varying the frequency of the power to theconnected motor. Energy is not wasted running a motor at100 percent speed when variable load requirements allowsuch operation. Loads with variable requirements such asfans, pumps and blowers may be good candidates forvariable-speed drives. Applications with low variability ofloads such as vibrating conveyors, punch presses, rockcrushers, machine tools and other constant load systems
are not appropriate candidates.
Consider These Benefits
Variable-speed drive system improvements generally can:
Reduce energy costs
Improve plant efficiency and load factor
Ensure precise control of process flow and pressure
Reduce maintenance costs by reducing stress on theconnected motor
Provide bypass capability, when required
Program Requirements Minimum of 3,000 annual operating hours
Must be for new installations or failed variable-speeddrives with bypass capability only
Variable-speed drive must be controlling a systemor process with a variable load
For use with fans, pumps or blowers
Process must be automatically controlled;manual controls do not qualify
Drives ineligible to receive a rebate from thisprogram include:
Replacement of working variable-speed drives
Single-phase variable-speed drives
Installation of variable-speed drives for the solepurpose of soft starting
Variable-speed drives for spare inventory
Installations where applicable code requires
a variable-speed driveMechanical-type drives or gear boxes, Eddy Currentdrives or magnetic coupling, etc.
Variable-speed drives in heating, ventilating andair conditioning where required by applicable code(ASHRAE 90.1-2007 or IECC 2009)
Program Rebates
The lesser of $40 per horsepower of the motor driven or 75percent of the installed cost (reasonable labor and material)
Cost of clean rooms to house variable-speed drives may beused in the total installed cost calculation

For a limited time, a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available to owners or designers of new or existing
commercial buildings that save at least 50 percent of the heating and cooling energy of a building that meets ASHRAEStandard 90.1-2001. Partial deductions of up to $.60 per square foot can be taken for measures affecting any one of threebuilding systems: the building envelope, lighting, or heating and cooling systems. Visitwww.energystar.gov/taxcredits
