2013/2014 Senior Count Resource Guide Dedicated to Arlene Kershaw

For the past 13 years, Arlene Kershaw tirelessly dedicated her profession at Seniors Count to improving and providing the best quality of life for our frail seniors. She actively communicated, shared and successfully actualized her vision of Changing the Face of Aging. Under her leadership and guidance Arlene frequently brought community providers, politicians, the state of NH and local businesses together at one table to discuss and address our responsibilities as a community to this vulnerable population. She was often heard saying, “We simply cannot allow our seniors to fall through the cracks —they are our neighbors.”

More than ten years ago, when she first introduced her promotion of aging in place for high risk frail older adults through enhanced, person centered coordination, medical services, community and social services and caregiver support, her vision was innovative, ground breaking and progressive. Today, many are recognizing and crediting her foresight in a time when treating the whole person is vital to the success of a frail senior living successfully in the community.

We wish Arlene continued success in her well-deserved retirement!

A Message from Nicholas A. Toumpas, ComissionerNew Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services

I continue to be impressed by Seniors Count and its partners throughout the State who work tremendously hard to ensure we never lose sight of the goal of improving and providing the best quality of life for our frail seniors. By enhancing access to community-based services, we can have a direct and immediate impact on their quality of life.

We have all learned during these fiscally challenging times that it is imperative for us to work together—for neighbors to reach out to neighbors—and lend a hand to those in need. The Seniors Count collaboration between local communities, families and agencies perfectly exemplifies this model of taking care of one another.

Seniors Count has been part of the very fabric of our state for 12 years and in that time has made great strides forward in supporting our elderly population by establishing new initiatives and enlisting the help of community partners who are dedicated to this critically-important cause.

Thank you to Seniors Count and those involved for all you have achieved, and will continue to achieve, on behalf of our aging loved ones.

Sincerely,

Nicholas A. Toumpas

A Note from Diane Langley, DirectorNew Hampshire Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services

On behalf of the NH Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services, I congratulate Seniors Count on the publication of the fourth Seniors Count Resource Guide. I also commend the partnership between Seniors Count, the Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services (BEAS), and ServiceLink Aging and Disability Resource Centers, which have continued working together to update and enhance this helpful publication.

Seniors Count has long provided invaluable assistance to older adults in Greater Manchester who are struggling with issues that affect independence such as poor health, isolation, limited mobility and lack of support. A wide variety of needs are addressed by Seniors Count, from obtaining a new pair of shoes or a comfortable mattress for an elder, to arranging home health services or locating an accessible place to live. This has been made possible by the many community partners- businesses and advocacy groups, friends and neighbors- who have collaborated with Seniors Count.

The Seniors Count Resource Guide addresses yet another critical need that seniors have—the need for updated information on available services and how to access them. Having this information empowers seniors and transforms lives.

The Bureau looks forward to more opportunities to work with Seniors Count and other organizations that share the BEAS mission to assist people to live as independently as possible, with safety and with dignity. Such partnerships will be more critical than ever as our diverse population continues to age and the demand for services increases.

With all best wishes,

Diane M. Langley
