H udson County Community College (HCCC) Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone announced today that the HCCC Foundation’s

2014 gala fundraiser was the most successful to date. Mr. Sansone said the 17th Annual “Holiday Extrava-ganza” grossed a record-breaking $208,000. Dear Friends of Hudson County Community College Foundation:

2014 was a wonderful year for Hudson County Community College – our students, community, and this Foundation. In addition to celebrating the College’s 40th Anniversary, we also applauded as more than 925 HCCC graduates walked across the stage at the 36th Annual Commencement Exercises in May. We commemorated the opening of the HCCC Library Building in September, and gathered for the Foundation’s 17th Annual “Holiday Extravaganza” in December, which grossed a record-breaking $208,000.

Almost 90% of HCCC students are eligible for federal financial aid. Since its establishment in 1997, this Foundation has provided more than $2 million in scholarships and book and knife vouchers to deserving students. The assistance provided by Foundation supporters is especially helpful to HCCC students as funding from federal, state and other sources has been reduced these past few years. Additionally, Foundation donors support the HCCC Summer Bridge and Life Skill College Transitional Programs, which help provide students with a more solid base for academic success.

Foundation donors’ generosity also plays an important role in the College’s growth, with stipends for faculty development, and capital to assist in physical expansion and upgrades. Further, the Foundation Art Collection, which was instituted in 2006, now includes more than 800 works of art. These are paintings, photographs, sketches, sculptures and three-dimensional works by some of America’s finest artists that are permanently installed in every one of the College’s buildings to be enjoyed and to inspire.

Sincere thanks to all of you who support the Foundation, and who participate in and contribute to our events throughout the year. This publication will provide just a glimpse of some of the many ways you have helped our students to fulfill their educational aspirations, the College to advance, and Hudson County to be a better educated, stronger community with a brighter future.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2015. We look forward to your continuing support.

Warm regards,

Joseph D. Sansone Vice President for Development

In addition, the HCCC Foundation established the Foundation Art Collection eight years ago to coincide with the initiation of the College’s Fine Arts studies program. Presently, the Collection includes more than 800 paintings, lithographs, photographs, sculptures, and other works-of-art that are displayed throughout all of the buildings on the College’s Journal Square Campus and at the North Hudson Higher Education Center. Artists in the Collection include: Donald Baechler, Leonard Baskin, Elizabeth Catlett, Christo, Willie Cole, Edward S. Curtis, Marcel Duchamp, Lisa Parker Hyatt, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Kosuth, Valeri Larko, Roy Lichtenstein, Reginald Marsh, Méret Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg,

Man Ray, Mickalene Thomas, and William Wegman. The Foundation also hosts a series of lectures called “Arts Talks,” which feature prominent artists and art authorities and scholars and are open to the general public.

The HCCC Foundation’s Board of Directors also organizes and holds an annual Golf Outing, “Night at the Races,” and the HCCC Employee Scholarship Luncheon. There are other events held throughout the year to build scholarship funds for students specifically from Hudson County’s northern and western municipalities.

The Southpole Foundation, a supporter of the College since 2005, presented HCCC with a check for $14,000. The Southpole Foundation was started back in 2004 by David Khym, founder of Southpole and Wicked Fashions,

Inc. Khym started the foundation in order to give back and support the local communities. The Southpole Foundation has helped in creating over 50 scholarships for the College.

Area business people and residents are invited to take advantage of Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Foundation’s Subscription Dining Series,

which offers world-class dining experience at lunchtime on eight Friday afternoons this Spring. (February 27, March 6, March 13, March 20, March 27, April 17, April 24, and May 1) The proceeds from the Series are utilized to provide much-needed financial assistance to deserving students.

The Subscription Dining Series was instituted after several business people expressed their desire to the College — which has received national acclaim for the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute (CAI) — for more fine dining options.

The HCCC Foundation Subscription Dining Series offers opportunities for groups of four diners to enjoy delicious, four-course meals. The food and service are coordinated through collaboration of Externships, Hotel Practicums and Restaurant Operations Management classes through the cooperation of Ara Karakashian and Janine Nunez under the direction of Ms. Tonja Jefferson-Webb and Chef A. Pukdeedamrongrit. All baked items and desserts are prepared under the direction of Chef Wendy Ann Schonberg, Chef Marissa Lontoc and Chef Courtney Payne.

The luncheons — which include soup, appetizer,

entrée, and dessert courses accompanied by non-alcoholic beverages (beer, wine and cocktails are available at an additional charge) — are held in the elegantly appointed Banquet Room of the HCCC Culinary Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station, and directly across the street from a public parking structure. All service at the luncheons is provided by the professionally trained CAI students.

Joseph Sansone, HCCC Vice President for Development, said that the cost for subscription in the series is priced at a very value-conscious $995.00. “When you think about it, that comes to $31.10 per person/per meal. There aren’t many fine dining establishments where you may enjoy a gourmet, four-course meal for so little,” he said. “What’s more, the subscription fee is also a tax-exempt donation that helps the Foundation provide much-needed scholarships to Hudson County students,” Mr. Sansone stated.

To obtain further details on the Subscription Dining Series and to secure a subscription, interested persons are asked to phone 201-360-4006 or email [email protected].

THE HCCC 9/11 MONUMENT

WEST HUDSON/NORTH ARLINGTON SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE HOSTS CASINO TRIP FUNDRAISER

Page 3Foundation Newsletter

On Sunday, March 9, 2014 the College Foundation’s West Hudson/North Arlington Scholarship Committee went on a fundraising trip to the Sands Casino in Pennsylvania. Monies raised will go towards the West Hudson/North Arlington Committee Scholarships.

The 9/11 Monument is a memorial of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The Twin Towers’ burning and eventual collapse were visible to hundreds of HCCC students from the front of what is now the Library Building. The HCCC 9/11 Monument has been positioned on

the Rooftop Terrace (Sixth Floor) of the Library Building, so that the new Freedom Tower serves as its backdrop.

The College had the privilege to acquiring a remnant piece of steel that was once part of a structural column at the World Trade Center. It is displayed on a pedestal created by New Jersey artist Billy Economou, who is renowned for his sculptural works, which force steel into sweeping, natural forms.

The pedestal was commissioned by the College’s Board of Trustees. The polished, straight, rectangular-shaped base was designed to serve as a visual continuation of the rectangular shape of the rusted, mangled steel resting above, and to symbolize America’s strength, resiliency, and determination in moving forward.

The Hudson County Community College Foundation is proud to have made funding for the 9/11 Monument possible.

Hudson County Community College mourns the passing of Joseph F. Scott, who served as President of the College from 1981 to 1987.

Scott graduated from Fordham University (master’s degree) and Saint Peter’s College (now Saint Peter’s University) (bachelor’s degree). He received a Distinguished Service Medal for his military service in five major battles during the Second World War.

Before coming to Hudson, Scott was a teacher and Director of Boys at the New Jersey Boystown, a home and school for delinquent and pre-delinquent boys, from 1948 to 1953. He was also editor of S.H.V., a magazine published in the interest of Boystown.

Scott later taught at several institutions including Fordham University and Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University) before coming to HCCC in 1977 as Executive Vice President. He became President in 1981, serving in that capacity until he retired in 1987.

IN MEMORIAM: JOSEPH F. SCOTT

Hudson County Community College recently suffered a loss when a former colleague, Sykowaa Mulumba, passed away on Saturday, March 15. Ms. Mulumba worked for the Student Support Service Program from October

1980 to September 2010. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends.

IN MEMORIAM: SYKOWAA MULUMBA

Hudson County Community College Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone announced that the College Foundation held

one of its most successful Golf Outing fundraisers on Monday, July 7. The event — the Foundation’s twelfth — took place at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, New Jersey.

Mr. Sansone said that more than 100 golfers

and lunch guests attended the event; raising approximately $80,000 for the HCCC Foundation. “We are eternally grateful for everyone who supported this event, which will help us provide scholarships to worthy students and assist us in additional efforts of the College,” he said.

Mr. Sansone also noted the Foundation’s appreciation for the event’s sponsors: The Hudson County Community College Board of Trustees, Johnston Communications Voice & Data, Follett Higher Education Group, Goldman Sachs, United Water, and Provident Bank.

“This event would not have been possible without

the diligent work of its committee, and the generosity of the many donors who gave gifts for our welcome bags and lunch prizes,” said Mr. Sansone. The Hudson County Community College Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 corporation giving tax-exempt status to contributors. Now in its sixteenth year of operation, the organization generates financial support to benefit deserving HCCC students by providing them with scholarships. The Foundation also provides seed money for new programs, faculty development and the College’s programs.

Established in 1997, the Hudson County Community College Foundation plays an integral role in the development of HCCC students, the College and the community. The Foundation is dedicated to generating financial support for the College and its students, developing and awarding needs-based and merit scholarships, providing seed money for the development of faculty programs, and providing for the College’s physical growth.

For other Foundation activities — including its Annual Scholarship Appeal — please contact the College’s Development Office at (201) 360-

4006, or email Mr. Sansone at [email protected]. Complete information on all of the Foundation’s activities is available online at www.hccc.edu/FoundationDonor.

The Collection is intended to enrich the lives of the community and to provide a point of reference and inspiration for the HCCC Fine Arts students. The works of art – paintings, lithographs, photographs, sculptures, and other pieces – are displayed throughout all of the buildings on the College’s Journal Square Campus and at the North Hudson Higher Education Center. The Hudson County Community College Foundation has approved a scholarship for students who are graduating from HCCC and

transferring to Saint Peter’s University.

Two scholarships of $10,000 each will be awarded, renewable for one year.

Students receiving this scholarship will have an opportunity to receive support through their senior year, provided that they maintain eligibility requirements.

The development of this scholarship follows the signing by Saint Peter’s University and Hudson County Community College of a letter of Intent to create “2 + 2 Articulation Agreements.” The agreement will facilitate the seamless transfer of students who complete an associate degree at Hudson County Community College in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Environmental Studies or Education. These students will have full junior status upon transfer to Saint Peter’s University.

On Friday, Nov. 7, Sharon Cohen Levin, Chief of Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of

New York, who is one of the nation’s leading art crime solvers, gave a fascinating talk in the Follett Lounge at Hudson County Community College, in the Culinary Conference Center. Levin spoke about recovering stolen Nazi loot and art, specifically, Egon Schiele’s Portrait of Wally. This was an excellent social history talk, especially for people interested in criminal justice, history, sociology, or art. Thanks to the community for the lively Q & A period. We learned a lot!
