María Cristina Masaveu Peterson was born in Oviedo on 17 April 1937. As a businesswoman and philanthropist, she carried out important social work throughout her life. She was the daughter of the banker, industrialist and patron Pedro Masaveu y Masaveu and of Juj Peterson Sjonell. Her childhood was marked by her mother’s premature death, which made her dedicate all her love and admiration to her father. From him she inherited the sense of rectitude, the respect for others’ ideas and tradition, a firm belief in ethical and moral principles, a passionate fondness for arts and any form of culture, in addition to a strong commitment and responsibility to society.

She studied piano in Oviedo and Madrid, and she met the writers, politicians and vanguard artists who, invited by her father, spent long periods at Hevia Palace. She kept a special memory of Federico Mompou who, among other works, composed here his oratorio ‘Improperios’ (‘Insults’) for voice and orchestra (premièred in 1963), which is considered “the most beautiful oratorio written in Spain during the second half of the 20th century, which can only be compared to Poulenc’s ‘Stabat Mater’ and Stravinsky’s ‘Mass.’”

She lived in London, Madrid, Barcelona and, finally, Ibiza, where she lived until Pedro Masaveu Peterson died. As universal heir of his estate, she gave her brother’s art collection to the Principality of Asturias as donation in return for the inheritance. At present, the collection can be visited at the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias with the name of “Pedro Masaveu Collection.” She kept her father’s private collection, which includes more than 200 ancient paintings (Baroque and previous periods), built with the historian Enrique Lafuente Ferrari’s advice.

As a consequence of her father’s and brother’s inheritances, she became a majority shareholder with 69.122% of the Masaveu Enterprise Group.

Aware of her responsibility, she came back to Asturias and settled at Hevia Palace. As the majority shareholder, faithfully continuing with the values that had always characterised “the house of Masaveu” and being keen on maintaining the family memory and identity, she appointed her cousin Elías Masaveu Alonso del Campo President and she became the Vice-President of the Tudela Veguín Group, today Corporación Masaveu S.A. From that position she performed her new responsibilities, kept and increased the Group’s industrial, artistic and financial heritage, invigorated and modernised the cement facilities and supported the creation of new business areas, providing the group with a certain appearance of economic independence and share soundness.

She was a woman of her time, open to modernity, with a liberal spirit, very cultured and sensitive, generous and committed to many social causes, with a penetrating emotional intelligence and deep convictions; a woman who lived her life with discretion, simplicity and closeness to others.

Participant of her experiences and emotions, the Foundation she created on 5 May 2006, which bears her name, is evidence of her life and her commitment to the Principality of Asturias, Spain and society.

She died in Oviedo on 14 November 2006.

The Foundation

ORIGIN AND HERITAGE

On 5 May 2006, the Foundation was incorporated by María Cristina Masaveu Peterson in a public deed authorised by the notary of Oviedo, Luis Alfonso Tejuca Pendás, with number 1,814 in his order of records.

María Cristina Masaveu Peterson provided the Foundation with 1,400,000 shares of Tudela Veguín, S.A., today Corporación Masaveu S.A., as foundational assets which at present, represent 41.382% of its share capital, as well as the ownership of Hevia Palace in Siero (Asturias). The Foundation was authorised and filed at the Foundations Register of the Spanish Ministry of Culture by virtue of Order 2,373/2006 of 30 June.

OBJECTIVES

» The fostering, dissemination, conservation, recovery and restoration of Spain’s historical heritage, and music and art in general.

» The training of young workers, looking after their comprehensive, human and professional learning.

» Scientific research, paying special attention to the technological development of the cement manufacturing industry and its subsequent applications.

D. Fernando MasaveuPresident of Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson—

The Foundation, which was created in 2006 by María Cristina Masaveu Peterson, has carried out intense work since then, and always in line with the extraordinary cultural and spiritual legacy of its founder. This has been the precise setting for all its projects, always being faithful to her wishes and carrying out this task with the special and unique hallmark that she entrusted and transmitted to us.

The way in which all the projects are undertaken is just as important as meeting the foundation’s purposes. Only the work involving day-to-day commitment, excitement, service to others, passion, responsibility, firmness and effort will give us the results we believe María Cristina Masaveu once imagined.

At the start of the year, the last boost was given to a shared project. It was the construction of an organ at the parish church in Pola de Siero, with the help of Asociación Pro Órgano, which organised a music cycle on the occasion of its unveiling, and this is just the beginning of a very important music culture activity in the area near Hevia Palace, our headquarters in Asturias.

In February, Visions of Asturias by José Manuel Ballester once again brought the public closer to this dear northern land; every year the public now expects this unique and extraordinary glimpse, full of sensitivity and beauty that is different but recognisable at the same time, but always universal.

The publication of the book The Dobra River Gorge & the Vis and Amieva Mountain Ranges, whose content is the result of many years of painstaking work by Francisco Ballesteros; Altarpiece Polychromy in the North of Spain. Asturias, 16th and 17th centuries by Carlos Nodal, whose research resulting from the Foundation’s scholarship is not only a unique serious, thorough, professional and captivating piece of work but is also a crucial legacy because of its innovativeness, many of its contents have been hitherto unheard-of and it is a reference source for some of the most important restoration work being carried out at present in Spain; and Lecture Series III on the Road to Santiago have put the final touches to a 3-year period in which we have gathered the interesting speeches about the Way of St James held at Oviedo University and organised by Navarre University.

These publications are precisely one of the Foundation’s main contributions. We at the Foundation believe that the way in which the dedication and professionalism of the research results of the persons in the various fields over the years are made available to society is one of our fundamental tasks because this contributes to the education and knowledge of our culture.

Institutional presentation

In that sense, during the year we worked on the content for the catalogue of Joaquín Rubio Camín’s complete works for publication in 2015.

However, the display of 63 exhibits from the 12th to 18th century of the Masaveu Collection at Madrid CentroCentro Cibeles was perhaps one of the projects that had far-reaching repercussions. Once the Foundation took over the management of the collection, with the inauguration of that exhibition in November the Foundation has become the vehicle that has brought society closer to knowing about the collection and enjoying it. It was a project in which everyone who made possible this collection, as we know it today, worked with respect and professionalism and carried out a rigorous, serious, high quality and superb task, convinced that their work enabled people who wanted to know about it to find a project that was didactic, taking a trip through the history of art and, therefore, educational and enjoyable.

A stark contrast to this is the Foundation’s contemporary art collection, with another form of modern collection, which also tries to disseminate knowledge of other arts, mainly photography. It includes both established and up-and-coming artists, who we believe that forming part of our collection should help and motivate them.

Our María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Academic Excellence Scholarship programme is probably one of the Foundation’s most gratifying projects. In 2014, a total of 32 scholarships were granted, enabling those students to supplement their professional university training with courses at top universities around the world such as those in London, Japan, Germany, United States, India, Cambodia, Spain, France, Israel and Portugal.

Other scholarships were granted through different projects such as in the field of music, at Queen Sofía College of Music; in other arts, through AlNorte; and in research and training, which will soon appear in the corresponding publications.

The support and sponsorship provided to medical research projects, both in oncology and ophthalmology, in 2014 is a good example of the Foundation’s commitment to the necessary cornerstones of society for its future development.

We believe that, with this work profile in 2014, we have contributed to creating, in several aspects, a more cultured society, with more training, with hope for the future and, therefore, with more fairness, while always being faithful to the criterion, intention and mandate, in form and substance, of the person who earmarked her heritage to meeting certain purposes so that society could benefit from it.

I would like to thank every single person who made this possible with their work and professionalism, and everyone who we work for and who have valued from society all the projects as well as our effort, affection, excitement and loyalty.

General data

With this report, Fundación Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson wants to show the work carried out in the year, and the excitement and effort devoted to it since its creation in 2006. We are slowly gaining momentum. In 2014, there were many activities, with important projects for the Foundation such as the exhibition called From the Romanesque to the Enlightenment. Image and Matter at CentroCentro Cibeles de Cultura y Ciudadanía in Madrid, with over 45,000 visitors, and which was the turning point in our task. Visions of Asturias by José Manuel Ballester was the Foundation’s initiative that fosters, from the patronage, the creation of a hitherto unheard-of collection of works about Asturias and its people, with a more personal and unique vision provided by prestigious photographers.

The Spanish media talked about our projects, mainly in the press but also in the digital arena and on television. There were also interviews, reference articles about our activities, and all types of events in the media. There was a large number of impacts on the press in Asturias, mainly in news items in the La Nueva España and El Comercio newspapers . Nevertheless, with the exhibition called Masaveu Collection: From the Romanesque to the Enlightenment, new frontiers were opened and numerous nationwide newspapers and news agencies such as El País, La Vanguardia, Madrid Press and Europa Press covered the exhibition. From this standpoint, the Foundation carries out actions aimed at different types of audience, both through its traditional publications such as catalogues and books and through its website www.fundacioncristinamasaveu.com, the latter being an important way of reaching young people and people from further away.

Traffic to the Foundation’s website has increased since its creation, with an average of 82,701 visits per year. Website traffic is highest in July and October, with an average of 10,000 visits per month. The web pages most viewed by users are those on Cultural Activities, the Contemporary Art Collection and Scholarships.

Visions of Asturias by Jose Manuel Ballester. ALLUMAR. Travelling exhibition project and author’s book.Visions of Asturias is a long-term initiative by the Foundation to foster, from the patronage, the creation of a hitherto unheard-of collection of works inspired by Asturias, with a more personal and intimate vision provided by guest prestigious photographers. By fully respecting their creative freedom, the activity generates an ambitious and dynamic novelty in this field, enabling the artists to provide a unique glimpse and face new challenges with the closeness of the land and people, whose nature is as surprising for the artist as well as for the spectators.

The second edition of Visions of Asturias featured José Manuel Ballester (Spanish Photography Award 2010), a painter and photographer whose international exhibitions and awards speak for his extensive career. In addition to his distinguished career, he also set out his personal objectives, seeking to establish solid dialogues between tradition and renovation and sharing experiences aimed at developing new creative strategies and which, in photography, usually tend to have architecture as the special guest.

José Manuel Ballester (Madrid, 1960) obtained a Degree in Fine Arts in 1984 from Madrid Complutense University. He began his career with paintings focusing on the techniques of the Italian and Flemish Schools from the 15th to 18th centuries. His work focuses on scenes that are compositionally, atmospherically and chromatically subjected to that process of cooling of reality, of minimalist dispossession, an essential trait which characterises most of his work.

Despite that strength in his art of projecting and constructing buildings, José Manuel Ballester is not an artist of architecture. He is an artist of space, silence and thoughtful experience. Therefore, most of his work analyses rooms, façades, passages, doors, windows, stairs, structural elements, beams, columns, chimneys, bridges and viaducts which in Visions of Asturias have also been enriched by the curious contrasts between nature and architecture and by the delicate moments captured on beaches, cliffs and mountains.

In this project, the industrial architecture and the landscape act under his well-aimed lens as the real philosopher’s stones, shelter and protection of human beings, and as guardians of their labour activity, their evolution or their decline, i.e. the essential factors that reveal the various standards of living.

First anniversary concert of the new organ for the Church of San Pedro Apóstol in Pola de Siero, Asturias.The recovery of the organ at the Parish Church of San Pedro Apóstol in Pola de Siero, which had been present in the town since 1902, was made possible thanks to the combination of many human and economic efforts. Everybody teamed up to revive the cultural and musical activity that had been carried out in Pola de Siero and which, in the beginning of the 1990s, was affected by the destruction of this instrument due to a fatal cave-in.

The new organ, made of oak with two main bodies, was installed in the lateral of the transept, on the Gospel side. Since it is medium-sized and has two keyboards, a pedal, 19 registrations plus couplings, it can play a wide range of literature with the highest musical expressiveness.

The creation of this new instrument made by the prestigious organ master-maker Gerhard Grenzing implies a unique artistic and musical legacy of great value for Pola de Siero and also for Asturias. It provides a decisive stimulus to boost new cultural possibilities around this instrument: concerts, master classes and didactic auditions of students at the conservatory, collaboration in instrumental activities, etc.

In answer to the patronage request made by the Asociación Pro-Órgano of Pola de Siero, and bearing in mind the great importance and the historical and cultural interest that the new organ gives to the cultural and academic life of this town, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation joined this valuable cultural initiative, together with other private and institutional donations, and anonymous collections. With its sponsorship, the Foundation completed the financing of the new instrument.

The new organ was inaugurated in February 2013 with an inaugural concert by Juan de la Rubia.

As a result of the first anniversary of the new organ, the Asociación Pro-Órgano organised a music cycle at the Parish Church of Pola de Siero: three commemorative concerts took place free of charge, by Antonio Corveiras, the Principality’s Chamber Ensemble (Ensamble de Cámara del Principado), and the organist Fernando L. Blanco and soprano Antonia Entrialgo, who brought the cycle to a close.

This edition includes a selection of the best images of the painter and photographer José Manuel Ballester in his tour throughout Asturias. There are 133 photos that give light (“allumando” in Asturian) to every nook and cranny so that we can discover inhospitable, active, isolated and unfinished spaces which possess extremely intimate poetics. The Allumar exhibition project was made up of 40 photographs from the over 5,000 taken by the painter and photographer, which were printed in different formats (300 x 180 / 200x120 / 150x110) and on different media (Duratran light box posters, direct print on Dibond and Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta paper) for the exhibit.

Of the works selected for the exhibition, 30 pieces belonged to the Foundation’s Contemporary Art Collection and the other 10 were added to complete the exhibition; 37 required wall installations and 3 were large light box designs.

The Dobra River Gorge & the Vis and Amieva Mountain Ranges. Geographical, historical & ethnographic study. Publishing project

On 10 April, the book called The Dobra River Gorge & the Vis and Amieva Mountain Ranges by Francisco Ballesteros Villar was presented at the Royal institute of Asturian Studies (RIDEA). The research work combines geographical, historical and ethnographic studies with the routes used by shepherds in the area to reach the Dobra river gorge and the Vis and Amieva mountain ranges.

Its author, Francisco Ballesteros Villar (Oviedo, 1940), is a lawyer and professor at Oviedo University but his passion for mountains has led him to write several books about the area surrounding the Picos de Europa mountain range. He is also the Deputy President of the Federation for Mountaineering of the Principality of Asturias and of the Vetusta Mountaineering Group of Oviedo. He devoted four years to this work since this area is not well known. Without the help of the area’s residents, he would have been unable to complete his book.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation wanted to contribute to preserve this valuable legacy whose objectives are to complete the descriptive knowledge of an almost unknown territory and whose cultural aims enhance the integral value of a region that balances usage and respect, where its nature and traditions are one of its best assets.

Altarpiece Polychromy in the North of Spain. Asturias, 17th-18th centuries. Research and publishing project

On 23 April 2014, the Foundation presented the book called Altarpiece Polychromy in the North of Spain. Asturias, 17th-18th centuries at Auditorio Caja de Música CentroCentro Cibeles de Cultura y Ciudadanía. The act was presented by José Tono Martínez, director of CentroCentro, with participation by Fernando Masaveu, President of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation; Monsignor Jesús Sanz Montes, the Archbishop of Oviedo; Ana González Rodríguez, Asturias Regional Councillor of Culture; Rocío Bruquetas from the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute; and Carlos Nodal Monar, a researcher, restorer and author of the book.

Faithful to the Foundation’s objectives, this research project was based on and fostered by the altarpiece and polychromy heritage in Asturian art. To carry it out, the researcher Carlos Nodal Monar enjoyed a scholarship in 2010-12 granted for such purpose by the Foundation.

Five years were required to publish this work since there were no related publications or information. This means that it is the Spanish and international work of reference for scholars, researchers, professors and art lovers in general.

The aim of this publication is to raise awareness among society about the immediate need to conserve and recover this cultural heritage and enlighten the Asturian people on an hitherto-unheard of area of their region since the polychromy was concealed.

Nodal wants people to know about the Asturian polychromy because it has always been given a secondary role is the study of altarpieces. He also wants to establish a relationship between this area and all the Cantabrian coast and the northern plateau of Spain since the artists came from neighbouring regions.

Understanding polychromy is an essential starting point to foster the conservation and restoration of these architectural, artistic and traditional works.

Publication of Lecture Series III on the Road to Santiago.

Publishing project

On 5 May, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation presented the book The Art along the Road at the Historic Building of Oviedo University, from Lecture Series III on the Pilgrims’ Road to Santiago held in May 2012.

The Lecture Series on the Road to Santiago, held every two years, are organised by Alumni University of Navarre, Oviedo University and the Archbishopric of Oviedo, with collaboration from Oviedo City Council and the Associations of Friends of the Pilgrims’ Road to Santiago. For the third series running, the Foundation published the lecture series.

Since the launch of this initiative, the Foundation has collaborated in the publication of the lecture series, which are presented in a bilingual Spanish-English version. The translation into English is endorsed by María José Álvarez Faedo, Head of the Department of Anglo-Germanic and French Philology at Oviedo University. This further boosts its dissemination and significantly contributes to providing value and enhancing the knowledge in Spain and abroad among experts and lovers of the Road of this enormous artistic heritage, which is able to project an important part of the best of our spirituality and history.

The speeches made at the conferences are included in a volume, thus providing knowledge of the Road’s roots and highlighting, above all, the artistic sphere: Medieval Art along the Jacobean route of the Eastern coast of Asturias, by Isabel Ruiz de la Peña”; Art in the Way. Between Villaviciosa and Avilés, by María Josefa San Fuentes —both professors at Oviedo University—; Art and spirituality along the Road, by Juan José Tuñón, Abbot of Royal Collegiate Basilica and Royal Site of Covadonga, as well as the work carried out by Clara Fernández-Ladreda Aguadé from Navarre University, The façades of the Road to Santiago in Navarre. Saint Mary the Royal of Sangüesa and Saint Michael of Estella. The volume also includes the texts from Laureano Víctor García, President of the Association of Friends of the Asturian-Galician Pilgrims’ Road to Santiago. Art along the Primitive Road. This is an initiative with which the Foundation feels very identified, not only because of the rigour and expertise of the speakers. but also because it combines knowledge, research and reflection to this exceptional route.

175 Years of Photography. Popular Characters. Baltasar Cue. Photographs (1891-1894). Exhibition

Between 28 May and 28 September, the National Anthropology Museum in Madrid held the photograph exhibition called Popular Characters by Baltasar Cue (Llanes, 1856-1918). The Museum of Asturian People has a collection of 100 glass plate negatives from this photographer which were donated by his grandson, Carlos Suárez Cue.

From its patronage to the discipline of artistic photography, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation organised, jointly with the National Anthropology Museum and the Museum of Asturian People, and with collaboration from the Sub-Directorate General for the Promotion of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, this exhibition as commemoration to 175 years of photography.

The exhibition, which was very complete, provided 40 images from this Llanes photographer taken between 1891 and 1894, whose portraits make them an essential part of the history of Spanish photography in the 19th century.

Cue, who was a cosmopolitan man, dared to transgress the norm from a village in the east of Asturias, bringing tramps, buskers, poor people and strange characters to his studio. These artistic representations of rural pre-industrial people are usually the work of amateur photographers or professionals carrying out non-commissioned work. Among them, as a sub-genre, there are portraits of people with an extremely low social status, even marginal. This fact is associated with the rise of poverty caused by the modern industrial economy.

Reasoned Catalogue of Javier Del Río’s Artistic Work. Research and publishing project

A Reasoned Catalogue on Javier Del Río (Gijón, 1929-2007) was created and published to meet the need to contribute to the protection, conservation, study and dissemination of the complete works of this artist, who won the Spanish Painting Award in 1956, and of his personal collection at his home in Valdediós (Asturias). It was also aimed at providing a work of reference to society so that it could be accessed by researchers, collectors, staff related to the world of art and the public in general.

In this long-term project, five years were dedicated and devoted to research work, a detailed inventory and the study, cataloguing and photographic reproduction of the artist’s work. Its aim was to present the publication in the form of a Reasoned Catalogue to the public in 2015. It has three volumes that include the work of this Asturian sculptor, painter, designer and photographer.

For this project, the Foundation conceived an art research scholarship, which was granted to the history of art graduate, Ana Johari Mejía Robledo, under the scientific direction of Ph.D. María Soledad Álvarez, Professor of the Department of Art History and Musicology at Oviedo University, and coordinator of this catalogue. The historian and art critic Ángel Antonio Rodríguez is the author of the third volume, which includes unique aspects of the artist’s work as well as his involvement in public and civil works, architecture and the work commissioned by religious orders and individuals, etc., which require independent treatment because of their specific importance.

The catalogue is a fundamental tool to keep Camín’s memory alive as a way of acknowledging him and improving the knowledge and dissemination of his artistic work.

67th Oviedo Opera Season. The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation sponsors and is the patron of the Oviedo Opera Foundation (with seven previous sponsored seasons) aimed at reinforcing an activity with a history of over 65 years that is the driving force behind the economic growth and cultural dissemination in and outside the region. Over 40 scheduled activities are carried out each season, including performances, children’s shows, activities with schools, talks and exhibitions.

Since the start, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has wanted to collaborate with and participate in the patronage of the opera through the Oviedo Opera Foundation, which is in charge of keeping the lyrical poetry tradition alive in Asturias. The agreement between the two institutions was embodied in a collaboration agreement that is renewed annual at the discretion of the parties.

The 2014-15 season started with Otello by Giuseppe Verdi to the libretto by Arrigo Boito at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, with participation by the Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir of the Oviedo Opera. The show gathered the friends of the opera.

Bibliophiles Association of Barcelona. The Bibliophiles Association of Barcelona was founded in 1944 by a group of book lovers from Barcelona. Its general aim is to foster a love of books in its most selective and refined manifestations. To achieve this, it disseminates the knowledge of the bibliographic treasures existing in Spain, both in general or particular collections, looking after their conservation, organising exhibitions of printed works, illustrations, ex-libris, bindings, manuscripts and, in general, all manifestations of the art of books, illustrations and printing. It holds conferences and carries out visits to libraries, and organises and takes part in exhibitions and congresses. It has published numerous publications, including 27 books of a high bibliophile level.

The Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation is member number 19 of this Association. Year after year, in accordance with the tradition started by the House of Masaveu, it identifies itself with this institution in its love of reading and books and in its desire to conserve the bibliographic treasures of Spanish ancient and modern literature.

Its fundamental objectives are to foster and disseminate art and provide professional training to young artists, in line with this long-term initiative. Since its creation, the Foundation has supported, with its patronage, the AlNorte National Week of Contemporary Art, carrying out numerous activities (exhibitions of new artists, professional workshops, conferences, round-table conferences, guided circuits, children’s courses, etc.) that foster contemporary art in the region. With its participation, artists and specialists can transmit their knowledge to creative writers, students, children and adults through an intense schedule provided in centres, schools and museums.

13th ALNORTE Generation.

In this edition, the scholarships granted to support new exhibition projects took into account the artistic quality of the submitted projects, their renewed sense of purpose, their theoretical-practical contribution to the current exhibition circuit and their viability. The scholarships received 40 projects, where the four finalists dominate techniques such as painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation or digital disciplines, with convincing projects, and they were installed in different cultural spaces in Asturias.

The key to her project was appropriation, where the very paint on paper is a metaphor for clothing and, together with rest of the installation, it is a subtle tribute to certain works canonised in art history, mainly works related to Bible passages and religious themes.

Inside Landscape• Factoría Cultural in Avilés

His project explores the expressive nature of the allocated space as a way of returning, whose intention is interpreted based on mutual dialogue. His work provides an integrating, open and understanding look towards space, inheritance and memory, based on the practice of sculpture as the reference to articulate the staging.

Circumambulatio • Laboral University

This is an audiovisual project that reflects on the idea of the parade and procession, the idea of circumambulation (circum+ambulatus) and the act of moving through the space around a sacred object or idol. It is a dialogue between procession and precession.

2nd Conference on Accessibility to Heritage Monuments. Auxilia Lugo. On 14 November 2014, the 2nd Conference on Accessibility to Heritage Monuments was held at the Lugo Provincial Museum, organised by Auxiliar Volunteer Association. The Foundation was invited to participate in the conference by showing the Master Plan for Accessibility at Oviedo Cathedral, where the speech was given by the project director, Ana Martínez Obregón, representing the Foundation, and by the author of the study itself, the architect Leopoldo Escobedo Sela.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation wanted to be a part of one of the main challenges in an advanced society such as providing accessibility to people with all types of permanent or temporary disabilities to certain spaces or cultural manifestations. The idea is to do one’s part. In 2013, the Foundation presented the Master Plan for Accessibility at Oviedo Cathedral, drafted by the architect Leopoldo Escobedo, where he studied accessibility for all citizens, regardless of their functional diversity. The purpose of the study was to reflect on and analyse the potential improvements in terms of accessibility, taking the complex nature of Oviedo Cathedral as the starting point so that all people, regardless of their functional diversity or limits, could enjoy its setting.

Conference on Altarpiece Polychromy in Asturias, 17th-18th centuries.

In collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, the María Cristina Masaveu Foundation organised on 20 November the conference by the historian and restorer Carlos Nodal, author of Altarpiece Polychromy in the North of Spain, which was aimed at disseminating the artistic and historical wealth of the altarpiece and his research, and foster its restoration. The work, which was presented in April at CentroCentro Cibeles de Cultura y Ciudadanía in Madrid, is a graphic and documentary study of the polychromy, regarding both its techniques as well as its history and professionalization.

The Foundation’s headquarters in Madrid. In 2014, the building acquired in 2012 in Madrid (calle Alcalá Galiano, 6) as the Foundation’s headquarters was refurbished, restored and adapted. It provides the Foundation with an exhibition room for projects linked to future action plans and potential agreements with the local and regional administrations aimed at providing them with an exhibition space within the Foundation’s own purposes. In 2014, all the work was carried out to obtain the corresponding permits and licences.

MASAVEU FOUNDATION PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation carries out different types of training and research projects and activities aimed at meeting one of its purposes on an ongoing basis, i.e. providing training to young people, especially young workers.

Regarding the training of young people, the Foundation is committed to continually sponsoring and providing economic support to the Masaveu Foundation Training School which, through the Salesian Fathers, has been devoted to the vocational training of young Asturians for 50 years.

The Foundation is a patron of the Masaveu Foundation and manages, together with the other patrons, the necessary sponsorship and tutelage which allow the school to continue with its prestigious educational record.

The Masaveu Foundation was created in 1956 by Pedro Masaveu, who also decided to build the school to meet its main purpose: vocational training.

The Masaveu Foundation’s 50th anniversary was in 2012. It currently provides all types of education, without leaving vocational training aside. Until 1997, mechanics and electricity were taught and, in the late 1990s, both medium and higher degree vocational training were introduced. 

Since 1997, one line of secondary school subjects and a course on social guarantee, known currently as initial vocational training programmes, have also been taught. As for non-formal education, the school became an authorised centre by the INEM to provide occupational training & courses for companies. The Foundation organised a guided visit to the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias for its parent-teacher association aimed at bringing it closer to Asturian artists.

CHOIR SCHOOL OF COVADONGA

As part of its projects and activities, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has a commitment to the academic training of the students at the Choir School of Covadonga. Since the start, the Foundation has provided musical and choir training to its students, regularly participating in religious festivities and concerts throughout the Principality of Asturias.

INTGRAF (2010-2014)

The main purpose of the Intgraf Special Centre for Employment is to provide vocational permanent training to people with disabilities and provide training to the professionals who work jointly with them on a daily basis in order to attain social integration by carrying out productive work that reaches the market.

Since 2010, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has collaborated with this special centre, contributing to the development of training programmes which are necessary so that workers can adapt to their jobs, to new technologies and to the innovative production processes required in their professional activity.

Proper training, adapted to each individual’s complex nature and diversity, considerably improves their ability to learn, fosters their job performance and encourages their entrepreneurship.

PATRONAGE TO THE LIBRARY OF THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES OF SPAIN (2010-2014)

To enable the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain to become an essential point and obligatory reference in the development and promotion of films in Spain, the project to create the archive and library of this institution emerged thanks to José Luis Borau’s initiative. The library opened to the public in January 2010 aimed at becoming a permanent and active source of information and consultation basically for the academics, institutions and any film buffs.

The Foundation collaborated for four years, helping the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to achieve significant progress:

• The inauguration of the Library’s Reading Room• The cataloguing of 3,400 films• The cataloguing of 5,000 books• The cataloguing of 1,325 short films• The cataloguing of 13,258 film slides• The cataloguing of 2,424 photographs• The inclusion in the Madrid Public Library Network

AWARDS FOR FINAL YEAR PROJECTS IN 2014. FESTIVITIES OF SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA

On occasion of the festivities of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of the university, every 25 November there is a solemn act at the assembly hall of the former Oviedo University which enables institutions, professional associations and companies to get closer to university life by sponsoring the Awards for the Final Year Projects that are given to students with the best academic record.

The Santiago Gascon Award for the Final Year Project in the Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, sponsored by the María Cristina Masaveu Foundation, was granted to Alejandro de Castro Crego.

EYE RESEARCH PROJECT WITH THE EYE RESEARCH FOUNDATION 2009/2014

In the search for excellence in research, since the start of 2009, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has collaborated with and sponsored, in partnership with the Eye Research Foundation (ORF), the development and execution of different research projects in the eye area, as well as the operation and development of scientific knowledge, through the Research Unit for Visual Sciences of the Fernández-Vega Eye Institute.

The current research includes various fields of visual science such as the development of experimental models for eye illnesses, molecular bases for ophthalmic pathology, ocular surface disorders such as dry eye syndrome and neurotrophic disorders, and retinal pathology such as macular degeneration.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG IN THE CAVE OF COIMBRE 2010-2014

The cave of Coímbre is located in the district of Peñamellera Alta (Asturias) and, since 2010, it has been the subject of an archaeology campaign whose information and volume of data date back to approximately 15,000 years ago.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation provides support to the archaeological action, which is already in the fourth campaign, with the involvement of archaeologists and history students from the Spanish Open University of the Basque Country University, Madrid Complutense University and Asturias University. The research is directed by David Álvarez Alonso, with authorisation from the Ministry of Culture and with full sponsorship from the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation. The Peñamellera Alta City Council collaborates actively by providing him with the necessary infrastructure for the dig.

The work will focus on excavating the rich sequence of the Upper Magdalenian period, exposed to view during the previous work, and then on analysing and processing all the remains; this work will be carried out throughout the year at the Spanish Open University’s archaeology laboratory in Gijón. The lytic and fauna studies are being conducted, as well as the sedimentological, palynological, anthracological and microfauna studies, and also the study of the lytic raw materials and the historical heritage site.

An informative publication is expected in 2015, with all the information obtained during this five-year research, and its aim is to bring us closer to archaeology and the way in which the groups of hunters lived at the end of the Palaeolithic period.

RESEARCH PROJECT-IMOMA 2010-2014

The Institute of Molecular and Oncological Medicine of Asturias (IMOMA) was created in 2008 to fight, prevent and diagnose cancer. Its objective is to provide patients with excellent quality care and the best tools and resources available to fight this disease. The IMOMA has a Translational Clinical Oncology Unit, a Molecular Medicine Laboratory and a Radiotherapy Service equipped with the latest generation TrueBeam STx linear accelerator powered by Novalis for cancer treatment.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, whose objectives include fostering scientific research, has provided support to IMOMA since 2008 in developing the research project on the next-generation genome sequencing applied to cancer studies with the aim of identifying new genes involved in this disease, under the direction of the doctors Juan Cadiñanos and Rubén Cabanillas and through the research scholarship granted to doctor Jorge de la Rosa Saa.

With the support from the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, the IMOMA has conducted several research projects, identifying new genes involved in laryngeal cancer and in accelerated ageing, describing new connections between cancer and ageing, and even managing to describe a new disease called Néstor-Guillermo progeria syndrome (NGPS). Such discoveries have been published as articles in scientific journals such as Science, Cancer Cell, Nature Communications and American Journal of Human Genetics. Describing the NGPS provided doctor Cabanillas with international recognition as a result of winning the Opitz award in 2012. All of these scientific results have been obtained in addition to being published in several prestigious journals since the creation of IMOMA.

More recently, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation granted the IMOMA a new project aimed at implementing the next-generation sequencing in clinical practice and applying this to the translational research through three lines of research:

• Development of a fast next-generation sequencing platform for the genetic diagnosis of hereditary deafness and identification of new genes involved in this disease.

• Identification and clinical validation of new genes that are potentially involved in prostate cancer.

• Development of a fast next-generation sequencing platform for the genetic diagnosis of hereditary blindness.

This project is the first in a series of initiatives to intensify and expand the application of technology in the clinical and translational area.

• Researcher. BS Degree in Biology, Oviedo University, 2008, specialising in Sanitary Biology, with a first class.

• Received a pre-doctoral scholarship (2008-2013) granted by the Foundation to carry out his doctoral thesis at the Institute of Molecular and Oncological Medicine of Asturias (IMOMA). With his work called Identification of molecular mechanisms of cancer and ageing using new mouse models and genomic approaches, co-directed by Doctor Juan Cadiñanos, Head of the IMOMA Laboratory, and by Carlos López Otín, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Oviedo University, he obtained Cum Laude with distinction in 2013.

• In his post-doctoral period, he has carried out research work at Professor Allan Bradley’s laboratory (Sanger Institute, Cambridge) with one of the only five post-doctoral scholarships granted by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies from among more than 100 candidates from all over Europe. This international recognition highlights the quality of his thesis results.

7TH SCHOLARSHIP EDITION FOR THE YEAR 2014-2015

The recognition of academic excellence seeks to encourage students to be dedicated and committed to achieving excellence in learning and in professional and personal development. With that purpose, the Foundation announced its seventh edition of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Academic Excellence Scholarships within its 2014-2015 Training Programme.

The scholarship is aimed at providing continuity and support to academic record of young Asturians with university vocation who show high academic performance.

The seventh edition of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Academic Excellence Scholarships is aimed at establishing the basis for granting aid to academic excellence for official first and second cycle university degrees, and graduates, engineers, architects, diploma holders, teachers, technical engineers and technical architects in the 2014 -2015 academic year.

Since its establishment in 2008, and in the previous six editions, this programme has awarded 144 scholarships.

The invitation to form part of the worthy group of holders of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Academic Excellence Scholarship is due to the unanimous consideration by the Expert Academic Assessment Committee and the Foundation’s Board that each holder represents, in a loyal and precise way, the human and professional profile of university students guaranteeing excellence, understood as the potentiality aimed at training individuals and making them able to play a role with the highest level of service to society and brilliance of execution.

The assessment for awarding the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Academic Excellence Scholarships is made based on theoretical references supporting the Training and Scholarship Programme. They refer to the approach to comprehensive human training and development, where social responsibility is the driving force to improve and foster the academic and human values.

The academic records of the scholarship applicants are assessed by an independent Academic Assessment Committee, created by the Foundation solely for this purpose. The professional record and the academic and research experience of the Committee members are due to the wish to grant a prestigious and academic distinction to each student who receives the scholarship.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation granted a scholarship to Ana Laura Iglesias Lago (Avilés, 1987) so that she could take the Master of Arts at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

She started her cello studies with teacher Katallin Illés at the Julián Orbón Municipal Professional Conservatoire in Avilés. Later, she moved to Madrid to study a Degree in Cello at the Royal Conservatoire of Madrid with teacher Iagoba Fanlo where, in June 2012, she obtained a Degree in Music with the highest grades. In that same year, she was accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in London, whose purpose is to enrich music culture by providing training and education to the most talented students with the highest grades.

The Queen Sofia Music School was created with the objective to establish an education centre to train musicians of excellence. The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has participated in its training programme with the patronage of the musical training scholarships since the year 2009-10.

In the year 2013-14, three scholarships were granted in different specialities, thus enabling the students to develop their enormous talent under the supervision of international musical maestros.

Martín García García. Piano Department 2013-14 / 2012-13 / 2011-12. Queen Sofia Music School. He was born in Gijón (Spain) in 1996. He began studying piano at the age of 5 with Russian teachers Natalia Mazoun and Ilya Goldfarb Ioffe. He received master classes from Naum Grubert and Dimitri Alexeev. He has studied piano at the Queen Sofia Music School since the year 2011-2012 thanks to the Banco Santander Foundation, with the teacher Galina Eguiazarova. In June 2013, Her Majesty Queen Sofia presented him with the Mention for the most Outstanding Student of the Piano Department. He received a scholarship for enrolment and residency from the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation.

Anna Milman Mmoshchenko. Violin Department 2013-14. Queen Sofia Music School. She was born in Gijón (Spain) in 1993. She began studying violin at the age of 6 at the Tchaikovsky Music Academy in Gijón with the teacher Suren Khachatryan. At the age of 13, she continued her training at the Bratislava Conservatoire with the teacher Jozef Kopelman. Two years later, she studied at the National Conservatoire in Paris with the teachers Boris Garlitzky and Igor Volochine. She also participated in courses with teachers such as Mikhail Kopelman and Igor Suliga. In 2013, she received master classes from Eduard Grach and Bartosz Bryła. Since the year 2011-2012, she has studied violin at the Queen Sofia Music School, with the senior teacher Marco Rizzi. She received a scholarship for enrolment from the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation.

Antonina Styczeń. Flute Department. 2013-14 at Queen Sofia Music School. She was born in Bielsko-Biała (Poland) in 1991. At the age of 7, she began studying flute at the Bielsko-Biała Conservatoire with the teacher Dorota Parzyk. Later, she continued her training at Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where she graduated with excellent grades in the class of the teacher Elzbieta Dastych-Szwarc. Since the year 2013-2014, she has studied flute at the Queen Sofia Music School, with the senior teacher Jacques Zoon. She received a scholarship for enrolment from the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation and the Albéniz Foundation.

The Masaveu Collection reached a collaboration agreement with the Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, whose purposes are to disseminate Spain’s historical heritage, foster the arts and culture in general, and manage the art collection through cultural projects, exhibitions and publications. This will foster and improve the knowledge about this prestigious artistic heritage.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation manages the Masaveu Collection, which is owned by the business group. Like the other shareholders, the Foundation continues to oversee the collection’s conservation and dissemination.

The main purposes of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation are to foster, disseminate, conserve, recover and restore Spain’s historical heritage, and music and art in general. It also fosters the training of young workers through subsidies and scholarships, looking after their comprehensive, human and professional learning. The Foundation also provides support to scientific progress through research aid.

Between 29 November 2013 and 1 June 2014, the public were able to see at the CentroCentro Cibeles de Cultura y Ciudadanía in Madrid the exhibition called From the Romanesque to the Enlightenment. Image and Matter, organised by the María Cristina Masaveu Foundation and CentroCentro which, for the first time, gathered 64 works of art (paintings and sculptures) from among the masterpieces dated between the 13th and 19th centuries of the Masaveu Collection, one of the biggest art collections in Spain.

The curator Angel Aterido structured the exhibition into three sections: Wooden & Golden, Between the Gothic & the Renaissance and The Triumph of Canvass. This provided a historical trip where religion was the dominant inspiration; from the Romanesque to the Enlightenment, through medieval masters, Baroque painters such as Murillo, Zurbarán, Alonso Cano, Bosch and El Greco, as well as a major selection of Flemish and Italian painters such as Van Cleve the Elder and Matthias Gerung.

Although the exhibition was initially scheduled to close on 25 May, it was extended for one more week with free entry at the initiative of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation and CentroCentro, showing their commitment to disseminate and bring art closer to the public. It closed on 1 June 2014, with 45,689 visitors.

Sorolla, The Colour of the Sea

The exhibition called Sorolla. The Colour of the Sea explores the painter’s gaze, in his own particular way of analysing the natural environment and using colour, by focusing on a group of works devoted to his favourite and most popular subject: the sea.

Although he was born in Valencia, he lived most of his life in Madrid, which is why he always yearned for his childhood landscapes, which are shown in his work. His life was very closely linked to the landscape of the Valencia coastline, the Balearic Islands and northern Spain, which he knew how to capture with expertise.

As the manager of the Masaveu Collection and of its art collection through several cultural projects, exhibitions and publications, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation loaned the oil painting The Return from Fishing, owned by the Masaveu Collection, for the exhibition Sorolla. The Colour of the Sea, in collaboration with the La Caixa Foundation.

Georges Braque, 1882-1963

For the first time in 40 years, the Grand Palais in Paris presented the first retrospective devoted to Georges Braque (1882-1963). As the inventor of collage, he was one of the reference artists at the turn of the 20th century, together with Picasso and Juan Gris. The exhibition showed the artist’s work and his personal perspective at the time and covered all the aspects in his work from Fauvism to his last pieces.

Casas-Rusiñol. Two modernist visions

The exhibition covered the work of Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol i Prats, the maximum exponents of the modernist movement at the end of the 19th century, focusing on the period between 1884 and 1903, when they worked together in Barcelona and Paris.

As successful bourgeois and bohemian painters in Spain and Europe and the main representatives of Catalan Modernism, Ramon Casas (1866–1932) and Santiago Rusiñol (1861–1931) are two of the great Spanish artists at the end of the 19th century who revitalised the painting scene of their day and ushered in the modernity that led to the emergence of the avant-garde in the 20th century.

From the time that they met in the 1880s and throughout their lives, they were close friends and colleagues in their profession and successes, exhibiting their work on numerous occasions at Sala Parés in Barcelona between 1890 and 1931.

The Carmen Thyssen Malaga Museum reunited both masters in its exhibition, examining the various aspects of their relationship: their friendship, the same art scenes (Paris and Catalonia), their contribution to modernism, their work as poster designers and the different paths they pursued, especially in their choice of the main subjects of their paintings.

A Shared History. Treasures from the Royal Palaces of Spain

The exhibition A Shared History. Treasures from the Royal Palaces of Spain, an initiative by Patrimonio Nacional (Spanish National Heritage), covered a period of 350 years from the time of Isabella I of Castile (1451-1504), an essential figure in consolidating Spain as a European power after unifying the two peninsular kingdoms during her reign.

The exhibition gathered 141 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries and weapons, confirming the close ties between Portugal and Spain between the 13th and 19th century.

Eucharistia

Eucharistia is the name of the exhibition of the Las Edades del Hombre Foundation in its 19th edition: an exhibition of sacred art that brings us closer to the rich heritage of the Church of Castile and Leon, which has one of the largest collections of religious art in Europe. The exhibition was held at the churches of Santa María and San Juan in Aranda de Duero.

The exhibition gathered 130 works of art, whose main theme was the history of the Eucharist in terms of the festive meal and sacrifice. The exhibit was organised in four sections: the first one covered the prior human background based on common realities to human beings and the basic elements of the Eucharist such as the bread, wine and feast since it emerged as a festive dinner, a Paschal meal; and the second section showed the Eucharist from the standpoint of the Old Testament, based on the stories that occurred to leading figures such as Abraham and his hospitality, Isaac and his sacrifice, and passages such as the manna in the desert and the Alliance of the Sinai. The third section was about the institution of the Eucharist in the New Testament, through three stages: the origins in Jesus, the creation and the first church. The fourth section showed the essential features: banquet, sacrifice, the body of Christ, celebration and charity commitment, ending with the cosmic dimension of the Eucharist.

On 24 March 2015, the Board meeting resolved to authorise the 2014 financial statements, closed on 31/12/2014, comprising the following: balance sheet, income statement, report on the foundation’s activities and financial management (including the tables applying the asset items for its own purposes; the statements of changes in financial position, which are not mandatory; and the degree of compliance with the Action Plan or Budget Settlement, where applicable) and the inventory.

On 16 December 2014, the Board meeting resolved to voluntarily submit the 2014 financial statements to an external audit, in line with the provisions of article 25 of Foundations Act 50/2002 of 26 December and article 31 of Royal Decree 1337/2005 of 11 November, as well as appoint, as the Foundation’s external auditor for 2014, PricewaterhouseCoopers Auditores, S.L., with registered address at Torre PwC, Paseo de la Castellana, 259 B - 28046 Madrid (Spain) and tax number B-79031290, filed at the Companies Registration Office for Madrid, sheet 87250-1, folio 75, tome 9,267, book 8,054, section 3, and filed at the Official Register of Chartered Accountants, with number S0242, for one year and for 2014, in accordance with the provisions of Audit Act 19/1988 of 12 July and its regulations, to whom the appointment was notified and which accepted this in a letter dated 17 December 2014, with authenticated signature. The appointment’s resolution and acceptance were converted into a public instrument granted on 23 December 2014 by the notary of Madrid, Jesús María Ortega Fernández, with number 4,120 in his order of records, and the request to register the auditor’s appointment at the Foundations Register of the Ministry of Culture was made on the same day, 23 December. The auditor’s registration was resolved in a Resolution dated 13 January 2015.

On 24 June 2015, the Board meeting approved, in due time and form, the 2014 financial statements, and the audit report was issued with a favourable opinion, which was filed at the Foundations Protectorate of the Ministry of Culture. The audit report for the 2014 financial statements issued by PricewaterhouseCoopers Auditores, S.L. is attached to this Activity Report.
