Jon Offutt has been blowing glass for over 30 years. His works start out as clear glass and he rolls the clear glass in colored glass pow-der creating layers of color on the outside of the piece. He regularly performs color studies combining different powders to determine how they react together. No paints or cold processes are used in his work. Jon is the owner/operator

of the House of Mulciber Glass Studio in Fargo, ND, has partici-pated in numerous exhibitions, and his work appears in a number of collections. He also built a mobile glassblowing studio to travel the state and give live demonstrations for people interested in learning more about his craft. Jon earned an M.F.A. in glass from Southern Il-linois University at Carbondale.

Second Place

Daniel Jara, Jewelry

Amy creates figurative sculpture in a variety of poses, colors, and sizes using carved wood, hand built clay and fiber. She works in collaboration with her husband, fellow artist Kelsey Sauber Olds in their studio in Viroqua, Wisconsin. They are interested in ex-ploring a balance between human and animal; wild and tame; crude and refined; movement and stability; humor and seriousness; adult and child; and toy and art object. Amy grew up in Madison, Wis-consin and studied ceramics at the University of Minnesota.

Daniel Jara is a Peruvian born artist now living in Wisconsin. He has no formal training and gathered most of his techniques by sharing ideas with street artisans while living on the road and selling his work in pla-zas throughout South America. By braiding, bending, and hammering wires together, he creates jewelry that draws directly upon the ances-tral traditions of Peru fused with

contemporary ideas and materials. His style of work uses only cold connections to combine copper, bronze, silver and German silver wires with semiprecious stones, fossils and seeds – absolutely no soldering or gluing. All the parts of Daniel’s jewelry are made by him, including earring hooks, jump-rings and chains.

Each year four top awards (Best Of, Second Place, Third Place, Merit) and invitational awards are given to Main Exhibitors and one top award to the Community Showcase. All artists are eligible for The Spirit of Powderhorn award. A panel of three judges, of

varying art backgrounds (one of whom is a Powderhorn Park Neighborhood resident), is chosen by the Art Fair Committee to jury the Main Exhibitors and select award winners. One judge is chosen by the Community Showcase Committee to select the Spirit of Powderhorn award winner (the artist whose work best represents the unique qualities found in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood), and “Best of ” for the Community Showcase.

2013 Award winners

2013 Best of Show

Amy Arnold, Mixed Media Merit Award

Tom Ashworth, Mixed Media

Tom worked as a graphic artist, illus-trator and cartoonist for 30 years. From this experience, he brings de-sign expertise and a knack for fan-ciful characterization to his current sculptural work. In 2001, Tom began creating 3-dimensional mixed-media figures that spring from repurposed wood with features formed from scraps of outmoded gadgetry and

cast off objects. His works are not so much a commentary on junk cul-ture but rather are freshly formed personalities, new life from well-worn components. Tom has won awards at several regional art fairs, is a graduate of the Minneapolis Col-lege of Art and Design, and is a St. Paul native who makes his home in Roseville, MN.

Third Place

Jon Offutt, Glass

Spirit Of Powderhorn

Robin Mueller, Glass

Robin Mueller creates one of a kind glass on glass mosaic. She works with stained glass the most, but has a lot of old plates and tile ready to go when the mood strikes. Circles are a main characteris-tic in her glass mosaic work. She uses old windows for larger pieces

and attractive frames for smaller pieces. By changing a shape here or a color or two there, a finished piece can look so different. Based in the Twin Cities Robin’s business Whimsies Design includes her glass work as well as paper mache creations.

This year’s Powderhorn Art Fair image is by An-drea Martin, paper-cut artist and 2013 Invitational Award Winner. “Powderhorn Art Fair” is an orig-

inal paper-cut created especially for this year’s Powder-horn Art Fair. The original piece can be seen in Andrea’s booth (38) during the art fair and prints will be available. After the art fair this beautiful paper-cut artwork will live in the office of PPNA for all to visit and see.

“My creative inspiration comes from observing the plants and animals that live in urban environments. I transform images that I see and that I take with my camera into detailed drawings that eventually become illustrative silhouettes of places and objects.”

“Trained as a biologist and growing up in rural New Eng-land led to the development of my interest in exploring nature and our relationship to it, emphasizing the incon-gruities that arise at the interface between nature and the urban society that permeates it. I incorporate into my work a variety of biological themes such as adapta-tion, evolution, and how humans and animals interact with each other and with the environment.”

“My first career was in biological research where I spent long hours dissecting tiny insects under a mi-croscope using handmade dissection tools. Now when I do my artwork, the process of progressively cutting away the paper to release the image re-minds me of the dissection process. The images are cut from one piece of black paper using only an x-acto knife and must be simplified and arranged so

that each element fits together like a puzzle, with each piece retaining a connection to the whole.” – Andrea Martin

Those interested can stop by their booth and activity area to participate and learn more about their programs. Urban Arts Acad-emy is a small, community centered non-profit on the corner of 39th and Chicago. “Our mission is to bring together neighborhood peo-ple from diverse cultures by pro-viding creative experiences in the arts with children and families to develop the gifts of self-expression and community. We TreeHow old are we? Inspired by trees and art, we are gather-ing "tree rings" for a Family Day installation at the Minne-apolis Institute of Arts on August 10. Participants are given the challenge of drawing concentric circles on a paper cir-cle. We are collecting the circles and running twine through the center in order to make hanging tree trunk sculptures. Each event will have a tree. We will count all the rings to find the cumulative age of each park. The goal is to hang them all together on August 10 and the MIA Inside Out Family Day. Come add yourself to our forest of friends in exchange for an art sticker.

While you are at it find out what's fun and free at the museum this summer. Family Day: Inside/Out | Minneapolis Institute of Arts http://new.artsmia.org

There will be five strategically placed waste stations posi-tioned throughout the event. Each waste station includes a 10 x 10 tent, green flag mark-er, waste stations banners, and three types of waste recep-tacles (organic waste, recy-clable waste and trash waste). The five stations will be the only locations to discard waste for the two-day event – allowing trash to be funneled to these identifiable waste stations.

All park single trash and re-cycle waste cans/barrels will be removed from the park during the event. Volunteers will be at each waste station assisting and educating art fair goers about the proper way to dispose of their waste.

Recycling,Compost and Trash

Where am I supposed to put my garbage?By Liz Kraus, Recreation Supervisor, Powderhorn Park

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of you who will be visiting Powderhorn Park for this year’s

Powderhorn Art Fair. This event is truly amazing!

Whether this is your first time or have been here many times, you’ll find that the event is always fresh and new, with many exciting artists displaying their creations and food vendors that represent all corners of the world.

While thousands of people enjoy this event every year, it has tradi-tionally produced a lot of waste that we have started to think about differently.

A major commitment that we’ve made, as event organizers, is to work towards becoming a truly green event. As our ability to com-post and recycle more items evolves within our communities, so will the ability at our events.

Last year, we composted or re-cycled about 70-80% more waste than the previous year. To put this in perspective, that’s the equivalent of roughly seven green trash dump-sters that remained empty, due to

participants taking the time to dis-pose of items properly. That’s quite impressive!

We’d like to continue on our quest, so as you enjoy the Fair, please join us in our efforts by disposing of

compostable/recyclable materials into appropriate containers located throughout the park.

I hope you enjoy the Fair and look forward to seeing you at the park!

Dave Lau is a volunteer that goes above and beyond help-ing with whatever is needed.

For 7 years Dave has volunteered at the Powderhorn Art Fair-every day, all day long. The Powderhorn Art Fair thanks Dave for his many years of vol-unteering with us, and looks forward to many more.

“I first volunteered at the Art Fair with a group 7 years ago and had an absolute great time. When the group dropped out the next year, I tracked down Cyndi who took me on as an apprentice rookie helper and I just can't quit. You guys are all such fun. The best part of it all are the won-derful artists. Every one of them is an interesting and entertaining individual and if I ask real nice, they'll sometimes

let me sit in their booth and pretend to the passing world that I actually had a hand in making the things on the walls.”

“I do a bit of other volunteering as well, but the old-guy part-time job at a downtown social service agency has become full time so I've had to cut back on the fun stuff just a bit. I still make time for Three Rivers Park where I help with runner events and a few farmhand chores at Gale Wood's Farm. Helping with lambing is the best part of that. I also guard the parking lot for another of my fa-vorite events, the Red Ribbon Ride.”

“But the Powderhorn Art Fair is my top favorite and I really appreciate you folks for letting me come back each year.”

The Quiet Voice Making the Art Fair Hum

Although we cannot say it enough, we want to thank Dixie Treichel our Artistic

Director for her many years of mak-ing the Powderhorn Art Fair a suc-cess. She has worked with the Pow-derhorn Art Fair since 2002.

Dixie works year-round from the earliest planning stages to being the name and face artists have come to recognize as the go-to person at the event. Her strong leader-ship and passion for promoting the arts makes Dixie one of our most valuable team members. Thank you Dixie and congratulations on all of your hard work.

Powderhorn Art Fair Honored Again by the Minnesota Women’s Press

By Sabrina Crews

The Powderhorn Art Fair has been honored for three years in a row by the Minnesota Women’s Press readers. “What Women Want” is the most

anticipated issue of the year for Minnesota Women’s Press, a local women-centered publication focused on

public affairs from a feminist perspective. After completing an online survey in De-cember 2013 and Jan-uary 2014, Minnesota Women’s Press read-ers named Powder-horn Art Fair a 2014 Honoree in the “Fa-vorite Art Festival” category. Readers look forward to the issue all year and keep it as a reference. Powderhorn Art Fair is also featured on page 37 of the May 2014 issue, thanking Minnesota Women’s Press readers for their participa-tion and continued support.

_[ draws curious onlookers.

This year Powderhorn Art Fair welcomes Minne (pronounced Minnie) the Lake Creature to Powder-horn Lake. Her original name is _[, but friends call

her Minne, the Dakota word for water. The Minneapolis Parks Foundation adopted Minne on July 16 2009. Since then she’s been making seasonal and unexpected visits into Minneapolis lakes to delight local residents and strength-en the community. Fans selected Powderhorn Lake to be Minne’s new summer vacation home by participating in a two-week poll on the Parks Foundation’s Facebook page.

_[ is a floating sculpture and public art project created by Minneapolis artist Cameron Gainer. The sculpture is based on the iconic “Surgeon’s Photo” of 1934 that was present-ed as definitive “evidence” of the existence of Scotland’s infamous Loch Ness Monster. It’s one of a trilogy of sculp-tures he created for public places inspired by iconic im-ages drawn from the popular imagination that also include Bigfoot and the impact of a massive meteor into the side of a museum.
