Ages 6-9: Youth players primarily participate in recreational leagues, usually in the fall.
Ages 9-10: Youth players begin indoor soccer participation during the winter to maintain stamina and ball handling skills, in preparation for the U9 or U10 club team soccer season, where the primary focus should be on technical development.
U11 – U15: Player competitiveness increases; this is the first age group that players can try out for local club teams. Players generally stick with the same club team as they balance high school and club team soccer. Players continue to play on indoor/ futsal teams throughout the winter and spring while participating in competitive summer tournaments.
The Timbers and Thorns run the competitive Regional Training Center (RTC) programs for U12-U14 and Pre-Academy/ODP Teams at U13-U15. Tryouts for both the RTC program and the Timbers ODP program take place in August.
U16 – U23: The best players continue their development in academy programs, college and/or on a PDL team, such as the Timbers U18 & U16 Academy Teams and/or the Timbers U23 PDL Team. Professional scouting intensifies throughout the college and PDL ranks.
The tryouts for the Timbers Academy teams take place in early July.
CAMPS Timbers and Thorns camps are available throughout the year for all ages and skill levels.
For more information about the Timbers and Thorns Youth Development programs, tryouts, and camps, please visit www.timbers.com/youth.

A normal day for me would start with a good breakfast in the morning to get myself ready for practice. After practice, I go home to rest and always eat a good solid meal. I then make sure to spend the rest of the day with my daughter.
I practice for a minimum of two (2) hours each day.
Practico por lo menos (2) horas al día.
I try and eat a lot of fruits, vegetables and other nutritious foods. For example, for breakfast, I might eat fruit and bread, and then for lunch or dinner, chicken and rice with vegetables.
Intento comer muchas frutas, verduras, y otra comida saludable.
During practice, I drink water and/or sports drinks to hydrate and keep my energy level high throughout training.
To stay hydrated, I drink a lot of water during the day. It’s really important to make sure you replace the fluids you lose during training.
My pre-practice snack is usually fruit, like a banana. My post-practice snack is typically an energy shake to help me recover after training.
In order to maintain an optimum level of health, it’s imperative that you have good nutrition, and eat and drink the right types of food and beverages. Plus, getting enough rest and taking care of your body is critical. It helps you perform at your best, both mentally and physically.

What do you like most about your position?
RICKETTS: I get to shout and organize. I’m normally a quiet person, so I get to be a little Jekyll and Hyde.
Puedo gritar y organizar.
(BUEHLER) VAN HOLLEBEKE: I like the feeling of freedom I get when I play out there. I enjoy the physical aspect of fighting for balls in the air and timing my tackles. I also enjoy the mental part of the position. You have a lot responsibility to organize the back line and midfield in front of you. You also have to anticipate where the ball is going to go and what type of runs forwards will make. Centerback requires a mixture of both instinct and mental ability.
CHARA: I enjoy my position because it is where you mainly pass and distribute the ball, and it gives you the ability to control the game on the field.
ACEVEDO: Playing forward gives you a feeling of freedom. As a forward, I always have the mentality to stir up the biggest mess I can for the back line. Of course, scoring is my favorite, but even more importantly, it’s really about creating opportunities for myself and the team. I try and be crafty enough to always have the backline on their tip toes.
What advice do you have for kids that play your position?
RICKETTS: Being a goalkeeper is one of the most difficult positions on the field. Don’t believe what people say about it being easy. You have to be tough mentally, be able to shrug off mistakes, and be ready to make the next play.
(BUEHLER) VAN HOLLEBEKE: Learn from your mistakes and then move on. As a defender, when you make a mistake, it can sometimes lead to a goal for the other team. That is just the nature of the position. I used to beat myself up much more, but as I have gotten older I have realized that all I can do is learn from my mistake and do my best next time.
CHARA: It is a position with a lot of responsibility so you have to trust your abilities/qualities and be very focused on the entire game.
ACEVEDO:The best advice I was given as a kid was to always put yourself in a good position to help you and your team score. Don’t be scared to just run at someone and take a risk. Lastly, you can never get tired of doing extra ball work so that, as a forward, when the ball is at your feet, it’s your best friend.
PERSPECTIVES BY POSITION | PERSPECTIVAS POR POSICIÓN
How do you prepare for a game?
RICKETTS: I listen to songs about giving your best and reaching for greatness.
(BUEHLER) VAN HOLLEBEKE: We usually watch a little film on the other team so we are aware of the players and type of offense we will be facing. But mostly, it is just about me and my teammates. I think about keys we should focus on to help us be successful. I also think about the things I’m good at and visualize doing them. Right before the game, I listen to fun music and enjoy dancing with my teammates. I try to go out on the field with a smile on my face, ready to have fun out there.
CHARA: My preparation for a game is more mental than physical because during a match you can’t be distracted, especially at my position.
ACEVEDO: I usually will just try and relax and not change up my daily routine. When I keep it as normal as I can is when I’ve noticed I play my best. I laugh with teammates, joke around in the locker room, and I’ll put some headphones on and mentally prepare myself and take a couple minutes to reflect on tactics.
Normalmente, intento relajarme y no cambiar mi rutina diaria.
What other player in your position do you admire? Why?
RICKETTS: The goalkeeper would definitely be Iker Casillas because he is a complete player. He is good with his feet, good on crosses and most importantly, he’s a good shot stopper.
(BUEHLER) VAN HOLLEBEKE: Christie Rampone. She is such a good leader of the back line. She is great at reading the game and communicating so that everyone is on the same page. She is also a legend.
Christie Rampone. . También, es una leyenda.
CHARA: Before he retired it was Claude Makelele. Now I admire the style of play of Xavi Hernandez for the way he controls the game. They are both great players, but great players with completely different characteristics.
ACEVEDO: I really started admiring Lionel Andrés Messi, not only because he scores goals and is a world class player but he’s small like myself, and it doesn’t seem to faze him. It’s amazing to watch what he can do on and off the ball. The best part about him is you never know what he’s going to do when he actually does have the ball at his feet.

“You play like you live. Nothing is separate from football. I like to read philosophy and theology. I also like to read science…. I just like to read. To read is good, because you can make a difference by thinking. In any given game, I think one player only touches the ball for an average of about one minute. But for the remaining 89 or 90 minutes, you’re thinking. You think, think, all the time
-- to see the field, to see the space and the players. So reading is good for the intellect.
We spoke with Diego this offseason to expand on the relevance of reading and how it can stir one’s creativity. Here’s what Diego said…
“For me, reading is one of the most important things. It is the time when I can listen to someone else’s words who wants to show, teach or tell me something, but I get to consume them through my own voice. It is a private moment. It is very important in my life and something that I really enjoy.
Reading can certainly have a constructive effect on how a player understands the game and, in my case, because of my position, helps me create, imagine and surprise [opponents]. I believe that a person playing always expresses something about himself on the field, so for me, those moments of reading takes on the same level of importance on the pitch as it does outside of it.
In general, no one in particular has inspired me to read. It has been a personal pleasure that has increased daily.”
Me gusta leer filosofía y teología.
To read is good,

Leer es algo buenísimo

In a special interview with Portland Monthly magazine last year, Diego Valeri spoke about the importance of reading and how it contributes to his creativity and ability to think on the field. In that interview, Diego said…
INTERVIEW WITH DIEGO VALERI

Besides Soccer, your academy gives great importance to talks about “life techniques.” What are they and why are they important?
For youth sports in general, it’s the next thing that is missing. I think the next step is to focus on the emotional and men-tal development. In order to be an elite athlete, you need the extra attention. You need to talk about how to overcome fears, how to deal with teammates and how to deal with losing. No matter what you become or what career you choose, everyone needs to learn how to work in a team. This part of the program is preparing the girls to be successful later in life. In Chicago, we have problems with gangs and early pregnancy. We have partner agencies that dedicate themselves to helping the girls learn and avoid those issues. For the academies in Colombia, the youth players encounter other is-sues, most notably the desire to have aesthetic surgeries. We are actually in the middle of making a book detailing these life techniques that will help youth athletes grow and improve by educating them about these pitfalls.
Why is soccer and in general staying active important for kids?
Sports is good for your health. When you play sports, you are naturally inclined to become healthier and hydrate with water. In addition, sports provides personal development and helps teach kids about life lessons like, how to work as a team, how to deal with losing, and how to learn to believe in yourself. There is no reason why a kid should not be playing sports. If it’s not soccer, there are a thousand other activities that teach kids the same lessons.
INTERVIEW WITH MÓNICA GONZÁLEZ
She sat down with us to discuss her Gonzo Soccer Foundation and the benefits of keeping youth active.
What inspired you to start the Gonzo Soccer Foundation?
I was trying to play professionally in Chicago, but unfortunately, I didn’t make the team. I found an indoor facility and ran a 2-day clinic for girls. I started coming back every Monday and it ended up growing to 40 kids. Most of the girls were from the Hispanic community, some were involved in gangs and many needed academic assistance. I helped facilitate some academic help for them, took them to a few professional soccer games, and started putting the life skills side of the program together. At the same time, I was coaching a U11 team for the Chicago Fire in the suburbs with the exact same drills. I realized that my girls in the suburbs could use a little bit of leadership, team building and sport psychology. My inner city kids needed more help staying off the streets, off drugs, and away from gangs. I wanted to combine both philosophies. By the second year, we became associated with a charter school and had two sites. A guy in Houston wanted to start one, so we started one there and then one in Tijuana. It’s grown organically and has really taken off. We now have five schools in Colombia.
