The task was to redesign the look and feel of two websites, but it soon became obvious that a full user-centred design process was needed.

In the initial phases of this project the client felt that it was just a re-skinning of their old website with some fresh graphics, but I realised that some deeper thought had to go into this, my challenge was to convince the stakeholders that user-centred research needed to be conducted to complete this job properly.

The task was to redesign the look and feel of two websites with emphasis on a proper user-centred design process. These were part of the same ‘product family’, therefore I felt that a brand strategy, marketing and Drupal website was necessary. I was lucky enough to be able to learn Drupal in this time, I spent significant time customising the theme using HTML, CSS and PHP. This was a highly rewarding job as I tackled the challenge of learning Drupal with gusto and great excitement, obviously as the mos powerful content management system it has been a dream of mine to have real-life project experience. I found my experience with Wordpress, LightCMS and previous web development came in very handy.

MML Before

Another challenge was there wasn’t clear access to some areas if the sites, this led to quite a bit of confusion in users. I fixed this by organising the content correctly with a wireframe diagram of the website.

The MML and APB sites are products in an overall family, this was unclear in the previous sites. I fixed this by creating new brands for each of the products.

In the end I collaborated with the stakeholders through good working relationships and getting all decision-makers into meetings together. The clients went away feeling this was a website they were proud of and had ownership over.

Drinking and driving is well recognised as a potentially dangerous combination, and signifi cant progress has been made over the past two decades in reducing the impact of alcohol impaired driving at an individual and community level.

Road users who are impaired by alcohol have a signifi cantly higher risk of being involved in a crash. The contribution of alcohol impairment to road crash, injuries and fatality statistics is too high, and this is particularly the case when it comes to young and inexperienced drivers.

Context In the 1960’s and 70’s road crashes regularly accounted for over 3,000 deaths per year. In 1970, 3,798 people died on Australian roads.

Since then the road toll has more than halved, not withstanding almost a doubling of the population, three times as many vehicle registrations, and a trebling of the number of people holding drivers licenses.

Since 1970, despite an increased number of motor vehicles; a wide range of road safety changes and initiatives, and a signifi cant heightening of community awareness, have reduced the road toll. These initiatives have included:

• Improvements to roads, such as separated dual lane highways, major roads by-passing towns and suburbs, road shoulder sealing, eliminating known dangerous ‘black spots’, use of audible edge-lining, and removal of roadside hazards.

• Changes to vehicles via the application of Australian Design Rules, including child restraint anchorages and seats, head restraints, airbags, and increased vehicle impact resistance and roll-over strength.

• Legislation requiring the fi tting and wearing of vehicle seat belts, and motorcycle and bicycle helmets.

• Enhanced police enforcement aided by improved technology such as red light and speed cameras.

06:DRINKING AND DRIVING

Within Australia and elsewhere, alcohol impaired driving is a signifi cant concern, and every effort should be made to eliminate the link between consuming alcohol and driving.

A+ on ReportsI believe in leveraging the full potential of InDesign, to make the program work for me and automate it as much as possible.

I’ve been using InDesign for many years now and have discovered a trick or two that saves me time and allows complete consistency. I developed a shell document for reports which I use as the basis for many documents with a lot of the more advanced settings in place including GREP styles, text variables and baseline grids. This creates a solid basis for other documents that is extremely modular while eliminating widows and orphans etc..

... but policy for just one.

Just the right noteWhen designing, I like to get a feeling for the client and clientele, so I can create the tone that will bring people in the door or get them involved in the message.

The Smiths logo and corporate ID was created to communicate a new image: it says ‘cafe’, ‘live music venue’, performance’, ‘bookstore’ and ‘fun’ at the same time.

This logo has been embraced by the organisation as their own and is now being incorporated into all their marketing and visuals.

Department of the Environment

Winning the workWhen pitching to a group of industry professionals and department officers, you need to bring your A-game.

The Department went out to tender for Change the Globe, a national retail campaign point-of-sale campaign.

My team and I were ultimately successful in securing the account, I was heavily involved in writing and presenting the tender to the department panel; and the primary designer responsible for delivering all materials. The project also involved print procurement, logistics, delivery, although client liaison was central to my role.

After a successful rollout the department expressed its complete satisfaction the services myself and the team provided.

SmartdirectionACTSmart is a local government campaign that encourages businesses to participate in a waste reduction accreditation program.

A waste reduction campaign is a difficult thing to sell to the public, but my team got together and came up with ‘Re-sponsible’, the idea is that locals would benefit from supporting local businesses who display an ACTSmart accredited logo.

I came up with a press ad, script, TVC, managed a photo shoot and more. This project has proven very successful with the target demographic, due to good response and high adoption rate in the ACT, besides the fact that the department is still using our visuals in this campaign today.

Capital Homes

Not just pretty picturesAs the formal entry for the Master Builders awards, this brochure had to be top of the line.

The purpose was to present the home for formal consideration in the 2014 Master Builders awards for a home less than $500,000.

It was a great pleasure translating the images the client provided into a consistent and modern book showcasing the home. Finding freedom in the layout using textures and typography was great, especially with such a satisfying result.
