Preface

This directory is a compilation of Pennsylvania’s primary wood processors. It includes the primary wood-processing companies that participated in a recent Timber Product Output Survey. It is a voluntary listing of the companies wishing to be included in the directory. As such this directory is not a comprehensive listing of every primary wood-processing company in Pennsylvania.

It is a goal of the partners to conduct the survey periodically in hopes of continually adding companies and refining the directory. Of the 430 companies still in business during the initial survey, 312 companies returned surveys and 284 agreed to be listed in this directory. Companies were located in 62 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of Forestry, in cooperation with the US Forest Service and other partners, conducted the survey throughout 2013 to provide information on the amount of timber harvested and processed by Pennsylvania’s forest products industry. The survey also provided general information on the employment force and overall production capacity of Pennsylvania’s forest products industry during 2012. The Bureau’s 35 Service Foresters started with several listings of primary wood processors and mills. They received training to canvass their assigned counties. Starting early in 2013, they began visiting sawmills and other companies in the counties where they work to learn more about Pennsylvania’s wood products industry.

A primary wood processor is one that actually cuts into a log or a bolt (a half log) to produce a primary wood product, whether that is a board, veneer, cant, chip, shaving or sawdust. These companies include sawmills, pallet mills, scragg mills, whole-tree chippers, firewood processors, and any other company receiving and processing roundwood into a primary wood product. Also, for the survey and this directory, log buyers & brokers exporting logs out of the U.S. were included.

Roundwood includes sawlogs for lumber; veneer logs and bolts; cooperage logs and bolts; pulpwood for paper; poletimber for fuelwood chips; logs for posts, poles, pilings; shaving/excelsior bolts; mine-prop timber; logs for railroad ties, pallet cants and scragg mills; cabin logs; and many more examples.

Preface

This directory is a compilation of Pennsylvania’s primary wood processors. It includes the primary wood-processing companies that participated in a recent Timber Product Output Survey. It is a voluntary listing of the companies wishingto be included in the directory. As such this directory is not a comprehensive listing of every primary wood-processing company in Pennsylvania.

It is a goal of the partners to conduct the survey periodically in hopes of continually adding companies and refining the directory. Of the 430 companies still in business during the initial survey, 312 companies returned surveys and 284 agreed to be listed in this directory. Companies were located in 62 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of Forestry, in cooperation with the US Forest Service and other partners, conducted the survey throughout 2013 to provide information on the amount of timber harvested and processed by Pennsylvania’s forest products industry. The survey also provided general information on the employment force and overall production capacity of Pennsylvania’s forest products industry during 2012. The Bureau’s 35 Service Foresters started with several listings of primary wood processors and mills. They received training tocanvass their assigned counties. Starting early in 2013, they began visiting sawmills and other companies in the counties where they work to learn more about Pennsylvania’s wood products industry.

A primary wood processor is one that actually cuts into a log or a bolt (a half log) to produce a primary wood product, whether that is a board, veneer, cant, chip, shaving or sawdust. These companies include sawmills, pallet mills, scragg mills, whole-tree chippers, firewood processors, and any other company receiving and processing roundwood into a primary wood product. Also, for thesurvey and this directory, log buyers & brokers exporting logs out of the U.S. were included.

Roundwood includes sawlogs for lumber; veneer logs and bolts; cooperage logs and bolts; pulpwood for paper; poletimber for fuelwood chips; logs for posts, poles, pilings; shaving/excelsior bolts; mine-prop timber; logs for railroad ties,pallet cants and scragg mills; cabin logs; and many more examples.
