A VETfS program will make you a more attractive proposition for employers and give you a head start in your chosen career.

Success in your VET program can lead to pathways to immediate employment and further education such as an associate degree or university studies.

What do I wear to Polytechnic West?You do not need to wear your school uniform to your course but you are expected to dress appropriately. Where special or protective clothing and/or footwear is required, it must be worn — without exception! Forgetting to bring your protective clothing will mean that you will be excluded from the campus workshops and returned to school.

AttendanceYou are responsible for ensuring you attend all scheduled classes. Attendance will be recorded and any absences are reported to your school. The VET Coordinator at your school will be contacted to discuss the appropriateness of you continuing with the program if absences are repeated. Tell your lecturer in advance if you know that you will be absent from any scheduled classes. Poor attendance may mean withdrawal from the course.

Studying at Polytechnic West Polytechnic West VETfS programs are conducted in workshops and classrooms which offer industry standard facilities and equipment. Students are given hands-on training on campus, in simulated workplaces or on-site in the workplace, giving you both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to guarantee well balanced training.

All training provided by Polytechnic West is endorsed under the Australian Qualifications Training Framework and provides graduates with a nationally recognised qualification.

Fees and ChargesSecondary school students undertaking VETfS courses as part of their secondary education are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees, however, depending on the chosen industry may be required to purchase protective clothing, text books and trade equipment at an additional cost.

How do I apply?Complete ALL sections of the application form and include• copies of latest school report• resume• written reference (if you have one)

Then make an appointment with the school VET Coordinator/Careers Councillor to review and submit the application form. Applications close 30 August 2013.

NB: All students are required to have a “C” grade average in Maths and English for all programs.

ResultsOfficial confirmation of your results (Record of Results) will be sent to your school at the end of your program.

NB: Those who do not successfully complete all units of competency will receive a Record of Achievement for those units that have been successfully completed.

Successful completion will give you a head start in your chosen career. Completion of your program can lead to pathways to employment or further education such as ourCertificates, Diploma, Associate Degrees or University studies.

Pre Apprenticeship in Schools (PAIS)If you are interested in an apprenticeship when you finish year 11 or 12, then Pre Apprenticeship in Schools (PAiS) pathway is for you.

PAiS provides an introduction into apprenticeship opportunities within various trades. Employers providetraining in the workplace to develop skills which compliment the training by Polytechnic West.

You 2 Can go to UniThe You 2 Can Go to Uni program allows students to commence Certificate III and above qualifications while still at school.

Students attend Polytechnic West for one or two days per week under the Vocational Education and Training for Schools (VETfS) program.

At the completion of year 12, successful students graduate with their West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), a Diploma in their chosen field and guaranteed entry )with credits*) into a Polytechnic West Associate Degree.

After graduation you may choose to:• Continue studying at Polytechnic West, through Diploma

and/or Associate Degree pathways• Apply for a place at a University using the Certificate IV

Certificate II in Aeroskills (Pre-Apprenticeship) Aircraft Maintenance EngineeringPre-apprenticeship in Schools

This 12 month qualification provides you with the initial skills and knowledge that Aircraft Maintenance employers are looking for. You will learn about airframes, components, electrical systems, instrumentation, gas turbines, piston engines, hydraulics, mechanical control systems, safe work practices around aircraft in a hangar environment, test equipment, industry documentation and much more.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive course credit into the Certificate IV in Aeroskills at Polytechnic West, if selected and hired by an employer as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer apprentice.

Students are responsible for the purchase of their uniforms, as well as some Personal Protective Equipment (black steel-capped boots) and associated fees. They will be also required to undertake an aptitude test and be interviewed for selection.

Material fees for this course are $90.

Certificate IV of Aeronautics (Airline Operations), Pilot Studies*You 2 Can go to Uni

This two-year course is designed for year 11 students who want to become a Commercial Pilot working in the aviation industry. You will gain the theoretical knowledge requirements for the Private and Commercial Pilot Licence from the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Students also have the option of integrating our commercial flight training program at an additional price. You may achieve a Private Pilot License in a minimum of 40 hours flight time however, students may take longer due to competency and proficiency and therefore hours may increase.

Flight training program fees and professional equipment are the responsibility of the student. Students are required to purchase their uniform and wear black dress shoes. Material fees for this course are $175.

Students will attend two, one-week blocks during July and October holidays and need to undertake an aptitude test for selection. *Register your interest now, course pending accreditation.

Certificate III in Aviation (Flight Operations) Cabin CrewNotice of ArrangementCourse fee approximately $1250; subject to CPI increase in 2014.

This course has been designed for year 12 students who want to work in the Aviation industry as Cabin Crew. Students enrol into part-time studies at Polytechnic West via Notice of Arrangement (NOA).

This course will introduce you to the primary role of Cabin Crew, where you are directly responsible for the safety and comfort of passengers and other crew members. You will learn about safety and emergency procedures and the use of emergency equipment, as well as aviation first aid, oxygen administration, fire fighting on board, customer service, grooming and preparing for work and more. Training is conducted in Polytechnic West’s static Boeing 737 aircraft.

Students are required to attend two, one-week blocks during July and October holidays. Students need to undertake an aptitude test and be interviewed for selection. Students must be able to work in confined spaces and must provide documented evidence of Swimming Level 4 with their application.

AUTOMOTIVE

Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Body Vehicle Painting Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge you need to work in the automotive mechanical trades, light and heavy vehicle.

You will learn how to prepare spray painting materials and equipment, how to prepare vehicle components for painting, how to remove and tag vehicle body components, about masking, safe work practices and much more.

As part of this qualification you will also undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Body Panel Beating Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

Auto body repairers carry out smash repairs andmaintenance work on all types of vehicles. They removedents by metal finishing; straighten body chassis usingstate of the art alignment equipment; repair and refit corroded panels by fabricating body panels and fill minor dents with body filler.

As part of this qualification you will be learning in asimulated working environment and exposed to anindustrial setting on work experience. This means startingon time, setting goals, achieving work in a given timeframe and working as part of a team.

Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Servicing (Light) Pre-ApprenticeshipPre-apprenticeship in Schools

Polytechnic West’s Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Servicing will teach you about servicing engine systems, using and maintaining testing and measuring devices, using and maintaining tools and equipment, workplace safety and more.

Students will also attend work placement during the first, second and third term breaks for one week each term.

Automotive apprentices and pre-apprentices at Polytechnic West enjoy access to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to train on, including vehicles, specialised automotive repair and diagnostic equipment, and specialised workrooms and workshops.

With dedicated industry-experienced lecturers, state-of-the-art facilities, and the latest equipment and technology, you can be assured you will learn the latest techniques and skills that are industry relevant.

Material fees for this course are $50.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION

Certificate II in Building & ConstructionPre-Apprenticeship — Bricklaying/BlocklayingCareer Directions

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge you need to work in the building and construction industry.

You will learn all about bricklaying/blocklaying, how to lay bricks stone, structure tiles, marble, concrete block and any other masonry materials to build or repair walls, partitions, fireplaces, sewers and other structures.

This program is delivered at Girrawheen Senior High School’s Trade Training Centre by Polytechnic West lecturers.

Certificate II in Building & ConstructionPre-Apprenticeship — CarpentryCareer Directions

Polytechnic West’s pre-apprenticeship Certificate II in Construction (Carpentry) will teach you skills in joinery techniques, domestic housing fit-outs, roofing construction, formwork erection, finishing and repair of wooden and metal structures and fixtures of residential and commercial buildings. You’ll also learn about basic joints, basic roofing, joinery through to hip roofs, roof trusses and beams, timber and steel wall framing, timber and concrete floors.

Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to take up an apprenticeship (Certificate III) in Carpentry. Graduates will need to be indentured by an employer before they commence apprenticeship training.

Material (stationary) fees for this course are approximately $40.

Certificate II in Building & ConstructionPre-Apprenticeship — Bricklaying/Blocklaying and Wall & Floor TilingCareer Directions

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge you need to work in the building and construction industry and gives you exposure to both the brick and blocklaying industry, as well as the wall and floor tiling industry.

You will learn how to lay bricks, construct and repair walls and tile as both a decorative and protective function. As part of this qualification you will also undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learnt.

This program is delivered at Armadale Senior High School’s Trade Training Centre by Polytechnic West lecturers.

Certificate II in Civil ConstructionCareer Directions

Civil construction workers are responsible for building essential infrastructure including major freeways, railways, water storage reservoirs or new housing subdivisions.

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to undertake a range of manual labouring tasks and operate machinery on construction sites. You will learn about safe work practices, using equipment and tools and effective communication. You will also learn skills that will enable you to read plans, take measurements, lay and repair concrete surfaces, drain sites, spread and compact materials manually, assist in excavation, control construction traffic, and organise your work.

As part of this qualification, students will be involved in live works at our shared resource with ERTECH Holdings at Tamala Park, Mindarie.

Possible career paths include plant operators, civil construction workers, project managers, estimators, site managers, foremen, designers, specialist contractors and consultants.

NB Students are required to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for these courses.

ERTECH, a well established Civil Construction company, continue to support Polytechnic West’s Certificate II through the provision of site access and equipment to make this qualification a truly unique hands-on experience for the students.

You 2 Can go to Uni

Polytechnic West’s dual Business qualification will strengthen your employment opportunities and provide you with a pathway into University.

The Certificate III in Business will develop your practical skills and knowledge so that you can undertake a range of tasks in an office environment. You will develop competencies in tasks such as customer service, workplace organisation, business operations and office computing.

The Certificate IV in Business provides you with the skills needed to be a supervisor, team leader or middle manager. You will learn about workplace health and safety, team management, addressing client needs, analysing and presenting research information and workplace innovation.

You can continue to study an Associate Degree of Business at Polytechnic west on completion of Year 12. This qualification will give you credit if you chose to continue to study at university.

COMMUNITY, CHILDREN & EDUCATION

Certificate II in Community Services Child CareCareer Directions

A qualification in Community Services (Child Care) will give you the skills and knowledge to provide social, emotional, physical and educational care of children up to the age of 12. You’ll learn about working with families, health, safety, legal requirements, first aid and working with children at risk.

You will also undertake supervised field placements during the third term of each year of study.

This qualification is designed to reflect the role of employees who perform a range of tasks in the Community Services industry sector.

Material fees for this course are $22.

Certificate III in Children’s ServicesChildren’s ServicesCareer Directions

This one year program is primarily designed for year 12 students who have completed the Certificate II in Community Services (Child Care).

This qualification will give you the skills and knowledge to provide social, emotional, physical and education care of children up to the age of 12. You will learn about working with families, health, safety, legal requirements, first aid and working with children at risk. You will also liaise with families, the community, colleagues and other professionals in order to improve the profile and qualify of children’s services.

Children’s Services includes day care, occasional care, out of school hours care, family day care and other specialised services.

CREATIVE, FASHION AND DESIGN

Career Directions

Polytechnic West offers an exciting new pathway of learning incorporating all aspects of the fashion production process from design principles to construction techniques, from fibre and fabric research to pattern-making and drafting.

Students can opt to enrol in either Thursday (Construction) or Friday (Patternmaking) classes or, complete both days for the full qualification.

Students who complete this qualification may have direct entry into the Certificate IV of Applied Fashion Design and Technology, leading to further VET Qualifications or Higher Education Pathways.

ELECTRONICS

Certificate II in Electronics & Certificate II in Computer Assembly & RepairCareer Directions

This is a career starting dual qualification. Two qualifications in two years in an area where the State Government has determined there is a skill shortage.

The Certificate II in Electronics will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work under supervision to select, assemble, setup, and maintain electrical/electronic apparatus. You will learn about solutions to basic electronics problems and the digital components of electronic apparatus.

The Certificate II in Computer Assembly and Repair will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to repair, maintain, assemble and upgrade a personal computer. You will also learn skills in the diagnosis of both hardware and software faults and assembling and upgrading personal computers.

Career opportunities include progressing into an Electronic Servicing Apprenticeship/Traineeship or becoming a Computer Service Technician.

ENGINEERING, METALS & MINING

Certificate II in Engineering — Pre-Apprenticeship Mechanical (Fitter Machinist)Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

Fitters are often employed in engineering workshops; in Western Australia, there are a large number of these skilled workers working in the mining industry and on-off shore oil rigs, repairing and servicing heavy mining equipment. Fitters also work with pumps, hydraulics and pneumatics.

Machinists work from detailed drawings to create parts (made from metal and other materials) using lathes, milling machines and various power tools, to make and service machinery, pumps and other equipment.

This qualification will teach you the practical skills you need to make and repair machines, parts and tools, and put this knowledge into practice in a supervised work placement. You will also learn about using tools, measuring and cutting, safety in the workplace, quality control, mechanical cutting and machining and how to draw and interpret sketches.

A keen eye for detail, good hand-eye coordination, and an awareness of safety rules and procedures are desirable for a career as a Fitter Machinist.

Material fees for this course are $60.

Certificate II in Engineering - Pre-Apprenticeship Fabrication (Light)Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

If you enjoy working with your hands, are physically fit and able to visualise how an object should look from a drawing, you may have the aptitude for working as a fabricator. Fabrication engineering tradespersons cut, shape, join and finish metal to make, maintain or repair metal products and structures.

Sheetmetal workers shape and form the cut material into products by operating sheetmetal shaping and forming machines such as brake presses, folding, bending and rolling machines. Parts are joined by riveting, bolting, welding, brazing or soldering, or by drilling holes in products and surfaces on which items are to be mounted. Some sheetmetal workers may produce aircraft sheetmetal parts requiring advanced drawing and calculating skills in dine tolerance work, or may set up and program computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.

Material fees for this course are $60.

Certificate II in Engineering — Pre-Apprenticeship Fabrication (Heavy)Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

Metal Fabricators and Welders manufacture, assemble and maintain mining structures, heavy transport and earth moving equipment, bridge building, engineering components, building structures, refineries, oil-rigs, storage vessels, shipbuilding and agricultural equipment.

As part of this pre-apprenticeship you will learn how to cut, shape, join and finish metal to make metal structures and products. You will also learn how to use tools, measure and calculate and draw and interpret sketches.

Polytechnic West’s specialised Metals and Engineering workshops are purpose built. Coupled with our industry relevant equipment, they provide you with a realistic study environment so that you’re ready to work, in these high demand trades, upon graduation.

Material fees for this course are $60.

HOSPITALITY & FOOD TRADES

Pre-apprenticeship in Schools

Bakers prepare and bake all types of breads, rolls, cakes, pastries and other baked goods.They usually work for bakeries that sell food for direct consumption by the public, or they may work for large organisations such as airlines, hotels or the military.

Bakers use raw ingredients and combine them either using machines or even by hand, bake them in ovens, and also glaze and decorate them. They may also slice and wrap these products for individual consumption.

As part of this course you’ll learn about producing a range of breads, cakes, biscuits, cookies, pies and other baked goods for retail and wholesale bakeries and dining establishments*.

You will also learn about OH&S procedures, food hygiene and sanitation and effective workplace communication.

Material fees for this course are $265 (subject to CPI increase in 2014). Students will also be required to purchase a uniform.

The Certificate III qualification provides you with the skills and knowledge to select, install and use computer software and hardware products and the ability to provide computer support within an organisation. You will learn how to configure, optimise, secure and test system software for a small home office network or a small to medium business network. The three main aspects studied are - computer systems basics along with health and safety and sustainability; user support including the building and repairing of computers and installing networks of computers and resolving user problems.

The Certificate IV qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to install and manage small scale networks, either as an independent network support technician or as part of a team. It also builds very sound network skills and has very good employment prospects. This course will include installing network software, installing network hardware, server installation and administration and user support.

Planning, building and testing games is a great way to develop the skills you need for a career in Information Technology and Creative Media. Applicants should have sound computer skills prior to entry, be logical thinkers, capable of solving problems and have an aspect of creativity.

Electives available are in story writing, games audio, animation and modelling.

Upon successful completion graduates can seek employment, enter the Diploma of Software Development, enter the Associate Degree of Software Development (Mobile Applications) or apply for a Computer Science or Information Technology course at a university.
