    92 - 2014 SEATTLE MARINERS SEASON REVIEW

    2014 SEATTLE MARINERS MINOR LEAGUE REVIEW

    AFFILIATES UPDATE: The Mariners 9 minor league affiliates wrapped up the 2014 season combining for a420-474 (.470) record. The organization had 4 teams finish the season .500 or better, but the Arizona LeagueMariners were the only Mariners minor league team to qualify for the post-season.

    YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Mariners had 6 minor league players make their Major League debut this season,all 6 were homegrown players: LHP Roenis Elias, OF James Jones, RHP Dominic Leone, OF StefenRomero, RHP Carson Smithand INF Chris Taylor.

    MARINERS MILB AWARDS: Infielders Jordy Lara (High Desert/Jackson) and D.J. Peterson (High

    Desert/Jackson) were named Co-Player of the Year, right-hander pitchers Jordan Pries(Jackson/Tacoma)and Edwin Diaz(Clinton) were named the Co-Starting Pitchers of the Year and right-handed pitcher MattBrazis (High Desert/Jackson) was named Relief Pitcher of the Year. Infielder Patrick Kivlehan(High/Jackson) received the Unsung Hero Award, while infielder Ketel Marte was earned the Heart and Soul

    Award for his exemplary play and leadership.

    MARINERS MILB CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR: In his first full season in the minor leagues, INF D.J.Petersonhit .297 (147x495) with 83 runs scored, 31 doubles, 1 triple, 31 home runs, 111 RBI, 45 walks and7 stolen base in 123 games combined between High Desert and Jackson. Peterson was 1 of 5 minor leagueplayers this season to record at least 30 home runs, while driving in at least 100 runs, joining Kris Bryant-CHI(43 HR/110 RBI), Marquez Smith-CIN (38 HR/131 RBI), Steven Moya-DET (35 HR/105 RBI) and Joey Gallo-TEX (42 HR/106 RBI). Dating back to 1992, Peterson is only the 3rd Mariners farmhands to accomplish thefeat and first since Alex Liddi hit 30 home runs and drove in 104 runs in 2011 with Triple-A Tacoma and 1BRich Poythress hit 31 home runs and had 130 RBI in 2010 with Single-A High Desert. Peterson, attendedUniversity of New Mexico from 2011-13 and was the Mariners 1st round selection (12th overall) in the 2013MLB First-Year Player Draft.

    Jordy Larahit .337 (177x525) with 91 runs scored, 40 doubles, 5 triples, 26 home runs, 104 RBI, 46 walksand 1 stolen base in 135 games combined between High Desert and Jackson. Lara finished T3rd in the minorleague this season with 71 extra-base hits, while also ranking 6th in RBI and T9th in doubles, 10th in sluggingpercentage (.581) and T13th in OPS (.937). He reached base safely via a hit or walk in 114 of 135 games,including 52 games with at least 2 hits. Lara was promoted to AA Jackson on July 27. At the time of hispromotion, Lara had a 17-game hit streak, batting .479 (34x71) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 8 home runs,24 RBI and 6 walks. Overall he hit .353 (141x399) with 77 runs scored, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 22 home runs,80 RBI, 38 walks and 1 stolen base in 102 games with the Mavericks. As of July 28, Lara led the CaliforniaLeague in hits (141) and total bases (243), while also ranking 2nd in average (.353), T2nd in RBI (80), 3rd inslugging percentage (.609), T3rd in home runs (22), runs (77) and extra-base hits, T4th in games (102), 6thin on-base percentage (.413) and 8th in doubles. Lara was named California League Player of the week threetimes: April 21-27, July 14-20 & July 21-27. Lara, who completed his 4th season in the Mariners organization,was signed by Seattle as a non-drafted International free agent on November 25, 2008.

    MARINERS MILB STARTING CO-PITCHERS OF THE YEAR: RH Jordan Priessplit the season betweenAA Jackson and AAA Tacoma, going a combined to go 10-8 with a 3.86 ERA (66 ER, 154.0 IP) over 27 games,

    26 starts. Pries made 2 starts with AA Jackson before making his AAA debut with the Rainiers on April 20 vs.Sacramento. He allowed only 1 hit and struck out 2 in the Rainiers 1-0 win over Sacramento, but did not factorinto the decision (6.0,1,0,0,2,2). Overall with Tacoma he went 9-8 with a 4.06 ERA (64 ER, 142.0 IP) in 25games, 24 starts. He allowed 1 run or less in 11 of his 24 starts and and 3 runs or less 18 times. Pries ranked5th in the league with a .254 opponents average (4th among starters, .246), while also ranking 9th with a 4.06ERA. A native of Alameda, California, Pries was originally selected by Seattle in the 30th round out of StanfordUniversity in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

    RH Edwin Diazwent 6-8 with a 3.33 ERA (43 ER, 116.1 IP) in 24 starts with A Clinton in the Midwest League.He limited opponents to a .226 (96x224) average, while walking 42 and striking out 111. Diaz allowed 2 earnedruns or less in 17 games, including not allowing a run in 6 of his starts this season. He tossed his first completegame shutout on Aug. 3 at Burlington in Clintons 1-0 win, allowing only 3 hits, while walking 0 and striking out5. Prior to his 9.0-inning complete game, his longest career outing was 7.0 innings (done, 2x, last: 5/21/14 atPeoria). Among starters in the Midwest League, Diaz ranked 4th in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (8.59) and T4thin lowest opponents batting average (.226). Diaz was the Mariners 3rd round selection (98th overall) out ofCaguas Military Academy in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

    MARINERS MILB RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR : RH Matt Braziswent 4-1 with 6 saves and a 2.36 ERA(19 ER, 72.1 IP) in 40 relief appearances combined High Desert and Jackson. He limited opponents to a .208average (54x260), while walking 18 and striking out 84. Among Mariners minor league pitchers his 0.995WHIP and ERA were 2nd-lowest, and strikeout rate (10.05 K/9.0 IP) was 3rd-lowest (min. 30 G). He beganthe season with the Mavericks, going 3-0 with 4 saves and a 2.97 ERA (13 ER, 39.1 IP) in 23 games. Afterallowing 7 runs over his first 6 relief appearances of the season (5.56), he allowed only 6 runs over his last 17games (1.93 ERA). Brazis was promoted to Jackson on July 7 and made his Double-A debut that night atHuntsville (3.2,1,1,1,0,3,HR). Overall he went 1-1 with 2 saves and a 1.64 ERA (6 ER, 33.0 IP) in 17 reliefappearances with the Generals. Brazis, a native of Tampa Bay, Florida, attended Boston University from 2009-12 and was the Mariners 28th round selection in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

    16-RUN COMEBACK: In one of the most remarkable comebacks in minor league baseball history, theClinton LumberKings overcame a 16-run 6th inning deficit to stun the Burlington Bees 20-17 atCommunity Field in Burlington on May 7. C Marcus Littlewoodhit a grand slam home run that tied thegame 17-17 with 1 out in the 9th inning. All 9 of the LumberKings starting lineup recorded at least 1 hit,including 7 players with multi-hit contests. CF Ian Miller(4x8, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI) and DH Justin Seager(4x7, 3 R, 3B, 2 RBI) each led the team with 4 hits, while SS/2B Zach Shank (3x6, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI),2B/P Lonnie Kauppila(3x6, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI, BB), C Marcus Littlewood(2x6, 3 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, BB),1B Jeff Zimmerman(2x6, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and RF Burt Reynolds (2x5, 2 R, HR, RBI, 2 BB)each recorded multi-hit games. Starter Jose Flores (4.0,7,8,8,4,2) allowed 8 runs on 7 hits in 4.0 innings,but didnt figure into the decision. RH Tommy Burns (0.1,3,6,6,2,1,HR) and LH Paul Fry(1.2,1,3,3,2,3,HR) combined to allow 9 runs in the 5th inning. RH Rafael Pineda (2.0,1,0,0,1,1), RHEmilio Pagan (3.0,1,0,0,0,4) and RH Lonnie Kauppila (1.0,0,0,0,0,0) combined to hold the Bees

    scoreless over the final 6.0 innings in relief. Pagan earned his first win of the season, after tossing acareer-high 3.0 inning in relief. Kauppila, who started the game at 2B and recorded 3 hits in the game,recorded the save in his first career pitching appearance with a 1-2-3 12th inning. The NationalAssociation of Professional Baseball Leagues, which governs the minors, didn't have any records of a16-run comeback. The largest deficit overcame in a big league victory is 12 runs, accomplished byDetroit against the Chicago White Sox on June 18, 1911; by the Philadelphia Athletics vs. Clevelandon June 15, 1925; and by the Indians over Seattle on Aug. 5, 2001.

    MARINERS EXTENDED PDC WITH JACKSON: Seattle Mariners Vice President of BaseballOperations Jack Zduriencik and Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn have announced theextension of the Player Development Contract with the Jackson Generals, the Mariners Double-Aaffiliate in the Southern League. The Player Development Contract, which would have run out at theend of the 2014 season, has been extended to cover the 2015 and 2016 seasons. 2015 and 2016 willmark the ninth and tenth years of partnership between the Seattle Mariners and Jackson Baseball Club,which began in 2007. 47 former Generals have appeared in games for the Mariners since 2007 and 24since 2012. Currently, there are 18 former Generals on Seattles active roster, including 2014 American

    League All-Star third baseman, Kyle Seager. The Generals appeared in the 2012 Southern LeagueChampionship Series and were led by current Mariners Brad Miller, Stefen Romero, Jesus Sucre, MikeZunino, Brandon Maurer, Yoervis Medina, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker.

    MARINERS AGREE TO PDC WITH BAKERSFIELD: Seattle Mariners Vice President of BaseballOperations Jack Zduriencik and Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn announced the PlayerDevelopment Contract with the Bakersfield Blaze, replacing the High Desert Mavericks as MarinersSingle-A affiliate in the California League. The Player Development Contract is for the 2015 and 2016seasons. This will be the Mariners second stint as a Major League affiliate in Bakersfield, previouslypartnering in 1982-1983. The Mariners have had an affiliate in the high-A California League since 1978.

    MARINERS EXTENDED PDC WITH CLINTON: The Mariners and Clinton LumberKings, Single-Aaffiliate in the Midwest League, announced the extension of the Player Development Contract to coverthe 2015 and 2016 seasons. As an affiliate of the Mariners since 2009, the LumberKings have madethe Midwest League playoffs 4 times in 6 years, which included a franchise record wins in a single halfwith 48 in the second half of 2012. With the renewal, Seattle will be the longest tenured MLB club withthe LumberKings.

    MARINERS EXTENDED PDC WITH EVERETT: The Mariners and Everett AquaSox announced theextension of the Player Development Contract to cover the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The AquaSox havebeen affiliated with the Seattle Mariners for 20 seasons, becoming the Mariners affiliate in the NorthwestLeague on September 12, 1994. The AquaSox play their home games at Everett Memorial Stadium,located in Everett, Wash., less than 30 miles north of Seattle. The AquaSox franchise has helpeddevelop current Mariners Willie Bloomquist, Felix Hernandez, James Jones, Dominic Leone, YoervisMedina, Michael Saunders, Tom Wilhelmsen and Mike Zunino.

    ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE: The Arizona Fall League began its 22nd season on Tuesday, October 7.Regarded throughout professional baseball as the finishing school for top prospects since its inceptionin 1992, the 6-team league features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball.The league plays 3 games per day 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) in 5 Cactus League stadiums.This year, the league adds the new Cubs Park in Mesa as a venue, joining returning sites CamelbackRanch-Glendale, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale Stadium and Surprise Stadium (twoteams). The Major League affiliations for each AFL team are as follows: Surprise Saguaros-Surprise

    Stadium (Mariners, Red Sox, Reds, Padres and Rangers); Glendale Desert Dogs-Camelback Ranch(Orioles, White Sox, Tigers, Dodgers, Brewers); Peoria Javelinas-Surprise Stadium (Braves, Indians,Royals, Cardinals, Rays); Mesa Solar Sox-Cubs Park (Cubs, Angels, Athletics, Blue Jays, Nationals);Salt River Rafters-Salt River Fields (Diamondbacks, Rockies, Astros, Marlins, Twins) and ScottsdaleScorpions-Scottsdale Stadium (Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates, Giants). AFL team is comprised of 5major league organizations working cooperatively. Each organization is required to assign six of theirmost promising Major League prospects to the league. The roster includes right-handed pitchers MattAnderson, Matt Brazis,Stephen Landazuriand Taijuan Walker, catcher John Hicksand infieldersPatrick Kivlehanand D.J. Peterson.Kivlehanwas on the also a member of the Peoria Javelinas in2013. Current High Desert Pitching Coach Andrew Lorrainewill serve as the Saguaros pitching coach,while AA Jackson trainer B.J. Downie will serve as the teams trainer.

    The Rainiers finished 3rd in the Pacific Coast League North Division with a 74-70 record and 7.0 games behind first-place Reno in 2014Marked the clubs 28th winning season in franchise history (since 1960), while the teams 74 wins rank tied for the 24th -most in a singleseason.

    Rainiers manager Roy Howellbecame the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history after replacing Rich Donnelly, who was originallytabbed as the teams skipper before being named the Mariners Major League third base coach in Spring Training. Howell guided theRainiers to 74 wins in his first season leading the Rainiers field staff, which was tied for the 9-most victories collected by a manager in hisfirst full season at Tacoma.

    The Rainiers wrapped up the season batting .281 (1384x4931) with 727 runs scored, 250 doubles, 34 triples, 131 home runs and 678RBI. The Rainiers 727 runs scored were the 2nd-most scored by a Mariners minor league affiliate this season (High Desert, 841), whileranking 14th-most by a team in the minors this season.

    The Rainiers ended the season ranked T17th in the minor leagues (10th in PCL) with 131 home runs this season. A total of 23 d ifferenplayers hit a home run with the Rainiers this season. Tacoma featured 5 different players with double-digits in home runs (Montero- 16

    Kelly- 15, Romero- 12, Blash- 12, Avery - 10) and 4 players with at least 40 RBI (Kelly- 80, Montero - 74, Franklin- 47, Smoak40).

    1B/DH Jesus Montero hit .286 (104x364) with 55 runs scored, 24 doubles, 1 triple, 16 home runs, 74 RBI, 37 walks and 1 stolen basein 97 games with Tacoma. Hit .329 (69x210) with 29 runs scored, 27 extra-base hits (18-2B, 9-HR) and 49 RBI in 50 games on the roadcompared to .227 (35x154) with 26 runs scored, 14 extra-base hit (6-2B, 3B, 7 HR) and 25 RBI in 47 games at Cheney Stadium. Herecorded a career-high 5 hits twice: July 4 at Fresno (5x5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI) and July 10 at Salt Lake (5x6, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI). Also tiedhis career-high with 6 RBI on July 4 at Fresno (also: 8/21/11 at Rochester w/ Scranton-WB). Montero was placed on the disabled list fothe remainder of the season on Aug. 15 with a left oblique strain. He was placed on the Suspended List on Sept. 1 after verbal altercationwith a Mariners scout at a Northwest League game while he was on a rehab assignment.

    Monterowas named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for July by Minor League Baseball. Montero led the PCL with 33 RB

    and 72 total bases in 27 games with the Rainiers last month. He ranked 2nd in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and extra-basehits (17), and third in total hits with 39. Montero turned in 12 multi-hit games over that stretch, including a season-high 5-for-5, 6-RBperformance at Salt Lake on July 4.

    INF Ty Kelly set career-highs in games (134), home runs (15) and RBI (80), also tied his career-high with 11 stolen bases. He appearedin games at second base, third base, left field, right field and designated hitter this seaon. Overall Kelly hit .263 (120x456) with 81 runsscored, 20 doubles, 2 triples, 15 home runs, 80 RBI, 85 walks and 11 stolen bases in his second season with the Rainiers. His 85 walksthis season were 2nd-most in the PCL, while also ranking T11th in the minor leagues this season. Over the past 2 season he has recorded187 walks, which is the 2nd-most in the minor leagues (Matt Olson, OAK 189). Kelly recorded 2 multi-home run games this season

    April 29 at Sacramento (3x5, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and July 10 at Salt Lake (3x4, 4 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB). Prior to this season only had 1career 2 home run game (7/15/12 vs. Carolina w/Bowie). He set a career-high with 7 RBI on July 10 at Salt Lake (previous: 5, done 2xlast: 5/16/13 vs. New Britain w/Bowie). Kellys 7 RBI were T9th-most in a single by a minor league player this season.

    INF Gabriel Noriegabegan the season with AA Jackson, batting .182 (4x22) in 7 games before being promoted to AAA Tacoma. He hisafely in 19 of his first 22 games with the Rainiers, batting .425 (34x80) with 14 runs scored, 11 doubles, 6 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen baseOverall he hit .275 (107x389) with 40 runs scored, 22 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 38 RBI, 12 walks and 3 stolen bases in 108 gamesin his first season with Tacoma.

    INF Chris Taylorwas selected by Seattle on July 24 and made his Major League debut on July 24 vs. BAL (1x3). In 75 game with AAATacoma, Taylor hit .328 (99x302) with 63 runs scored, 22 doubles, 7 triples, 5 home runs and 37 RBI. At the time of his promotion toSeattle, he ranked among the Pacific Coast League leaders in batting average (2nd), runs scored (T4th) and in triples (T3rd). Afterecording only 3 hits in his first 22 Triple-A at-bats (.136), Taylor hit .415 (51x123) with 27 runs scored, 11 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs18 RBI and 9 stolen bases over his next 29 games (April 11-May 13). He was on the disabled list with a fractured 5th digit on his left handafter sliding into second base, May 15-June 16. He struggled after returning for the DL, but he hit .347 (26x75) over his last 19 gameswith Tacoma. Taylor went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles in the AAA All-Star Game to earn Top Star honors for the Pacific Coast League.

    Tacomas pitching staff fanned 1,106 batters through 144 games of their 2014 campaign, while limiting opponents to a .267 (1325x4954)RH Jordan Pries led the team with 9 wins, while RH Andrew Carraway finished 2nd with 8 wins. Tacomas starting pitching staff

    combined to go 37-49 with a 4.76 ERA (383x2822), while walking 264 and striking out 616.

    The Rainiers relievers went a combined 37-21 with 40 saves and a 4.45 ERA (271 ER, 547.2 IP). RH Logan Kensingled all relieverswith 6 wins, while RH Todd Coffeyand RH Carson Smith(10) combined for 21 of the teams 40 saves. The relievers combined to limiopponents to a .267 (570x2132), while walking 231 and striking out 490 batters. As a team they averaged 8 .06 strikeouts per 9.0 innings

    RH Jordan Pries made 2 starts with AA Jackson before making his AAA debut with the Rainiers on April 20 vs. Sacramento. He allowedonly 1 hit and struck out 2 in the Rainiers 1-0 win over Sacramento, but did not factor into the decision (6.0,1,0,0,2,2). Overall with Tacomahe went 9-8 with a 4.06 ERA (64 ER, 142.0 IP) in 25 games, 24 starts. He allowed 1 run or less in 11 of his 24 starts and 3 runs or less18 times. Pries ranked 5th in the league with a .254 opponents average (4th among starters, .246), while also ranking 9th with a 4.06ERA.

    RH Carson Smith went 1-3 with a 2.93 ERA (14 ER, 43.0 IP) in 39 relief appearances with Tacoma. He limited opponents to a .265

    (44x166) average, while walking 13 and striking out 45. After allowing 12 runs (8 ER) over his first 10.0 innings in 11 relief appearancesto begin the season, Smith allowed only 7 runs (6 ER) over his final 33.0 innings of the season (28 games/1.64 ERA). During this stretchfrom May 29-Aug. 31, he lowered his season average from 7.20 to 2.93.

    20 YEARS OF RAINIERS: The 2014 season marked Tacomas 20th serving as the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The Rainiersnow own a 1386-1333 (.510) record since taking over as the Mariners top farm team in 1995.

    JOB ADVANCEMENT: A total of 6 players who spent time on the Rainiers roster in 2014 made their Major League debuts with Seattlethis season. OF James Jones, SS Chris Taylorand RHP Carson Smitheach received their first big league call-ups after starting theseason on Tacomas roster. OF Stefen Romeroand LHP Roenis Eliasstarted the season on the Mariners Opening Day roster beforeeventually logging time with the Rainiers. Reliever Dominic Leone started his 2014 campaign on Tacomas Opening Day roster, but waspromoted to Seattle before the Rainiers officially played their first game of the season (April 4).

    ROLL CALL: Of the 25 active players on the Rainiers 2014 Opening Day roster, a total of 8 were active for the teams season finale aFresno on September 1: Xavier Avery, Logan Bawcom, Blake Beavan, Ji-Man Choi, James Gillheeney, Ty Kelly, Logan Kensing

    Nate Tenbrink. And of those 8 players, only Kensing, Kellyand Averyremained active on Tacoma roster throughout the entirety of theteams 144-game season.

    PROSPECTING: The Rainiers roster featured 13 of the top 27 prospects in the Mariners farm system, as ranked by Baseball Americaprior to the start of the season, including six of Seattles top 15 farmhands. Taijuan Walker(1), James Paxton(3), Chris Taylor(9)Julio Morban(11), Carson Smith(14), Stefen Romero(15), Abraham Almonte(17), Jabari Blash(19), Ketel Marte(20), DominicLeone(22), John Hicks (23), Ji-Man Choi(25) and James Jones(27) all logged time with Tacoma at some point in 2014.

    WALK IT OFF: The Rainiers posted a total of 12 walk-off wins in 2014, meaning just over 31% of the 38 victories tallied at CheneyStadium were secured in the teams final at-bat.

    RATE OF RETURN: After a falling a season-low 13 games below .500 on June 11 (26-39), the Rainiers bounced back to go 44-35 (.557over the teams final 79 games of the season. Not counting the league-worst 9-21 (.300) mark the team posted in 30 games played inMay, the Rainiers combined to collect a 65-49 (.570) record the rest of the year.

    DAMPENED SPIRITS: Ten of the Rainiers first 19 scheduled home games were delayed by weather, with 8 postponed games, onesuspended game and one game shortened due to rain. The 8 rain-outs were the most sustained by the franchise since suffering 7 rainouts in back-to-back seasons in 2001 and 2002. Tacoma endured a rain-out on Opening Night (April 3), snapping a streak of 187consecutive home games played without having a game postponed due to rain. Prior to 2014, the Rainiers had logged just one ra in ouin three seasons since undergoing renovations in 2011.

    AIM FOUR THE STARS: Rainiers infielders Chris Taylor, Nick Franklin and Gabriel Noriega, and pitcher Logan Kensingwereselected to represent the PCL in the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game played on July 16 in Durham, NC. It marked the first time since 2001Tacoma featured four players in the annual contest pitting the PCLs best against standouts from the International League.Taylor(SS)Franklin(2B) and Noriega(3B) each started for the PCL, with Taylor earning PCL Player of the Game honors after going 3-for-4 with apair of doubles - a Triple-A All-Star Game record.

    POSTSEASON SUPERLATIVES: The Rainiers front office and field staff honored Jesus Montero, Gabriel Noriega, Logan KensingLogan Bawcomand Forrest Snowwith postseason team awards. Monteroearned Offensive Player of the Year honors after leadingthe team with 16 home runs and 24 doubles in 97 games played with Tacoma. Kensingwas chosen as the Rainiers Pitcher of the Yea

    with a 3.58 ERA (35ER, 88.0IP) in a team-high 49 relief appearances with Tacoma this season. Noriega was named the clubs DefensivePlayer of the Year. He appeared in 100 games and 854.1 innings at three different positions (2B, SS, 3B), producing .967 fieldingpercentage with the Rainiers. Bawcomand Snoweach earned Rainiers Community Service Awards after combining to dedicate morethan 30 hours of volunteer time at organizations that included Mary Bridge Childrens Hospital, Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Boys andGirls Clubs of the South Sound.

    WEEKLY WINNERS: Rainiers players collected two different Pacific Coast League Awards/Minor League Baseball awards this seasonTaijuan Walkerwas named Pitcher of the Week for June 23-30 after tossing nine scoreless innings against Oklahoma City on June 24Walker limited the RedHawks to four hits and struck out eight in his first shutout victory of his career. Jesus Montero was named by

    MiLB as the PCL Player of the Month for July. Montero led all of Triple-A baseball with 33 RBI and ranked second in the league in sluggingpercentage for the month. Monteros RBI haul was the most recorded by a Rainiers player in a single month since Mike Carp drove in 37runs in 29 games in May of 2011.

    SS Ketel Marte, RHP Stephen Kohlscheen(did not play due to promotion to AAA) and RHP Mayckol Guiapewere selected the NorthDivision All-Star team. Marte and Guiape represented Jackson at the All-Star Game in Chattanooga at AT&T Field on June 17. It markedthe first time for each player to be named to an All-Star team in any level of their professional career.

    The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced the 2014 Post-season All-Star Team as voted upon by the leaguesfield managers, radio broadcasters and print media. Ketel Marte was named the leagues top shortstop and Patrick Kivlehanwas namedas the top utility player this season.

    The Generals pitching staff finished the season with 4.15 ERA, while walking 434 batters and striking out 959 in 1215.1 innings. LH TyleOlsonled the team with 10 wins, while LH Cam Hobsonranked 2nd on the staff with 8 wins. RH Mayckol Guaipeled the Generals with12 saves.

    LH Tyler Olsonwent 12-8 with a 3.46 (57 ER, 148.1 IP) over 148.1 innings combined between High Desert and Jackson. He led allMariners minor league players in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. He made 5 starts with the Mavericks from April 7-28 before his

    promotion to Jackson, going 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA (8 ER, 23.0 IP). Olson became the franchises first 10-game winner since J.R. Mathesaccomplished the feat in 2006 (10-8), after going 10-7 with a 3.52 ERA (49 ER, 125.1 IP) in 22 starts with the Generals. After going 3-5with a 4.56 ERA (36 ER, 71.0 IP) over his first 13 AA starts, Olson went 7-2 with a 2.15 ERA (13 ER, 54.1 IP) over his final 9 starts. Ove5 starts in August, Olson went 5-1 with a 1.18 ERA (5 ER, 38.0 IP). During this stretch he limited opponents to a .199 (28x141) averagewhile walking 7 and striking out 30.

    RH Victor Sanchez, the 2nd-youngest players in the Southern League this season, went 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA (58 ER, 124.2 IP) in 23starts with Jackson. He recorded a 7.0-inning complete game shutout on June 13 vs. Jacksonville, allowing only 2 hits, while walking 3and striking out 8. Sanchez struck out a season-high 9 batters, while also tossing a season-high 8.0 innings and recorded the win on July12 vs. Birmingham (8.0,3,1,1,1,9,HR). He went 5-3 with a 3.03 ERA (25 ER, 74.1 IP) over a 13-game stretch from May 29-Aug. 3. HisERA during this stretch was the 4th-lowest in the league, among qualifying starting pitchers.

    LH Cam Hobsonwent 8-11 with a 4.60 ERA (66 ER, 129.0 IP) in 29 games, 18 starts with Jackson. He went 7-7 with a 5.25 ERA (55ER, 94.1 IP) in 18 starts with the Generals and 1-4 with a 2.86 ERA (11 ER, 34.2 IP) in 11 relief appearances. He tossed at least 1.2innings in each of his 11 relief appearances, including 6 innings tossing at least 3.0 innings. Hobson went 3-6 with a 6.22 ERA (44 ER

    63.2 IP) in 15 games/8 starts at home, compared to going 5-5 with a 3.03 ERA (22 ER, 65.1 IP) in 14 games/10 starts on the road.

    RH Matt Brazis, named Mariners Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year, went 4-1 with 6 saves and a 2.36 ERA (19 ER, 72.1 IP) in 40relief appearances combined High Desert and Jackson. From May 24-Sept. 1, Shackleford held opponentsscoreless in 21 of 27 appearances, going 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA (7 ER, 35.0 IP). During this stretch he limited opponents to a .227 averagewhile lowering his season ERA from 4.75 to 3.11.

    The Generals wrapped up the season batting .261 (1210x4641) with 607 runs scored, 251 doubles, 48 triples, 92 home runs and 564RBI. Jackson had 22 players hit at least 1 home run, including at least 10 home runs each by Dan Paolini (13), D.J. Peterson (13) andPatrick Kivlehan (11). Kivlehan (68) and Paolini (65) finished 1st and 2nd on the team in RBI, while Leon Landry (25) and Ketel Marte(23) combined to steal 48 bases.

    After hitting just 40 home runs over their first 81 games, Jackson hit 52 home runs over their last 58 games since July 1st, which led theSouthern League in that period of time. Peterson was 1 of 5 minor leagueplayers this season to record at least 30 home runs, while driving in at least 100 runs, joining Kris Bryant-CHI (43 HR/110 RBI), MarquezSmith-CIN (38 HR/131 RBI), Steven Moya-DET (35 HR/105 RBI) and Joey Gallo-TEX (42 HR/106 RBI). Dating back to 1992, Petersonis only the 3rd Mariners farmhands to accomplish the feat and first since Alex Liddi hit 30 home runs and drove in 104 runs in 2011 withTriple-A Tacoma and 1B Rich Poythress hit 31 home runs and had 130 RBI in 2010 with Single-A High Desert.

After batting .114 (4x35) in his first 10 Double-Agames, Kivlehan reached base safely in the next 29 straight games. During this stretch he hit .381 (40x105) with 18 runs scored, 10doubles, 2 triple, 4 home runs, 28 RBI, 14 walks and 3 stolen bases, raising his season average from .114 to .314. Kivlehans careerhigh 17 game hitting streak from June 3-23 (.438/28x64, 13 R, 9 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 7 BB, SB), was T3rd-longest in the SouthernLeague in 2014.     LARA NAMED CALIFORNIA LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JULY: Minor League Baseball announced that INF Jordy Larawas named California League Player of the Month for July. Lara was promoted to Jackson from Seattles California League affil iate theHigh Desert Mavericks on July 27th. Lara paced the California League with his .434 batting average as well as in extra-base hits (19)on-base percentage (.477) and slugging percentage (.808). His 43 hits, 80 total bases, and 9 home runs were all second best in theleague, with his 27 RBIs being third. The first baseman was named the CAL player of the week twice in July and was promoted from theHigh Desert Mavericks to the Jackson Generals at the end of July.

    OF Leon Landryhit .280 (118x421) with 60 runs scored, 21 doubles, 9 triples,2 home runs, 30 RBI, 19 walks and 25 stolen base in 108games with Jackson. From May 16-Aug. 31, recorded a hit in 65 of 80 games, batting .321 (102x334) with 51 runs scored, 19 doubles, 2home runs, 22 RBI, 12 and 19 stolen bases. During this 80-game stretch he had the 3rd-highest batting average in the Southern Leaguewhile raising his season average from .155 to .280. Landry recorded a season-high 16-game hit streak, July 4-25 (.292/21x72, 14 R, 3

    2B, HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 7 SB). It was the 2nd-longest hitting streak by a Generals player this season and 5th-longest in the Southern LeagueLandry stole 25 bases this season, ranking T4th in the Southern League. It also marked his 2nd-highest stolen base total in his careerand his 4th straight season with at least 20 steals. Landry snapped a 466 at-bat homerless streak on July 20 at Montgomery with a solo home run inthe 5th inning. His 2 home runs this season were a career-low.

    INF/OF Dan Paoliniled the Generals and finished T9th in the Southern League with 48 extra base hits. Overall ht hit .268 (110x476) with58 runs scored, 34 doubles, 1 triple, 13 home runs, 65 RBI, 56 walks and 3 stolen bases in 116 games. He hit .362 (25x69) with 16 runsscored, 8 doubles, 4 home runs and 8 RBI over his final 19 games from Aug. 9-Sept. 1. During this stretch he recorded 6 multi-hit gamesincluding 3 season-high 4 hit games (8/9 at Pensacola, 8/31 at Montgomery, 9/1 at Montgomery).

    C John Hickssplit the season between Jackson and Tacoma, batting a combined .290 (84x290) with 42 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3triple, 5 home runs, 47 RBI, 27 walks and 7 stolen bases. He hit .296 (56x189) with 29 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs27 RBI in 53 games with Jacksons, including batting .345 (39x113) with 22 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 17 RBI ovehis final 32 games with the Generals. Among the California League leaders he ranked 2nd in hits, 3rd inat-bats, T4th in RBI, 4th in runs scored and 7th in average. Jackson left the game on July 21 at AZL Rangers after being hit in the face by a linedrive. He was diagnosed with a small fracture of the maxillary antrum (sinus area).
