Phil Marshall President and Chief Executive OfficerHosparus, Inc.

Phil Marshall provides strategic leadership and overall management for Hosparus, which includes traditional hospice care. Marshall’s leadership marks a 14 percent increase in patients served, and a new nonprofit organization, Care Guide Partners (which serves patients with chronic

illness sooner outside the restrictions placed on hospice care), was formed.

Gerard Rabalais, MDChair, University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics Chief, Kosair Children’s Hospital medical staff

Under Dr. Gerard Rabalais’ leadership, the UofL Department of Pediatrics secured new funding for a child neurology residency, and the pediatric hospitalist program and the forensic pediatrics program launched. Rabalais led the effort to expand the network of UofL Pediatrics specialty

satellite clinics throughout the state and spearheaded the opening of a multi-specialty office in east Louisville and primary care offices in Campbellsville and Louisville.

Carol Steltenkamp, MDChief Medical Information Officer, University of Kentucky HealthCare

Dr. Carol Steltenkamp was instrumental in the development of UK HealthCare’s data warehouse, a system incorporating data mining capabilities and maintaining a pleasant and highly functional user interface. She also serves as executive director for the Kentucky Regional

Extension Center, a health IT staff resource used by 2,800 Kentucky health professionals.

Susan Stout TammePresidentBaptist Health Collaborations

In her role, Susan Stout Tamme looks at strategic partnerships and potential ventures with other hospitals, systems and organizations that can partner with Baptist Health Kentucky residents’ health. Previously, Tamme served as president of the Louisville market for Baptist Healthcare

System and as president of Baptist Hospital Louisville, formerly Baptist Health East.

The healthcare Innovation AwardPresented to an organization that has developed a new procedure, device, service, program or treatment that improves the delivery of care.

Kentucky Regional Extension Center (Kentucky REC)

Kentucky REC assists providers, practices and rural, critical access hospitals achieve Meaningful Use of their electronic health records and qualify for incentive payments. Kentucky REC supports more than 2,800 individual providers in more than 500 locations across the state. To date, Kentucky REC has helped bring $99 million electronic health records incentive dollars to providers throughout Kentucky.

Louisville EMS

Louisville EMS has led the country in developing new programs to better service patients with low-acuity medical issues in a cost-effective manner for the consumer that optimizes the use of emergency resources. For example, the nurse-based triage process in the 911 center allows patients who call 911 with a small subset of low-acuity to speak with a nurse who uses a medical algorithm to work through the patient’s issue and

recommends appropriate alternative care.

Norton Healthcare

Norton Healthcare’s integrated electronic medical record system, Epic, captures clinical, financial and operational data

related to each patient and organizes it into a consistent record that is accessible across the care continuum. Epic’s online portal, MyChart, lets patients review their medications and medical history, receive test results, review discharge instructions and send messages to healthcare providers. As of January 2014, more than 35,000 patients were using MyChart.

University of Louisville Institute of Molecular Cardiology (IMC)

Under Dr. Roberto Bolli’s leadership, the Institute of Molecular Cardiology is making significant contributions in ischemic heart disease, heart failure and stem cell therapy for cardiac repair. The IMC is recognized worldwide as a leading cardiovascular research program and consistently brings more than $ 13 million

annually in national federal funding to the Louisville Metro region. Most importantly, the IMC is developing novel treatments and future cures for cardiovascular disease.

The Middleton Reutlinger nurse of the Year AwardPresented to a nurse who has gone above and beyond their normal responsibilities to improve best practices and contribute to patient education.

Laura Crump, RNOrthopedic and Spine Nurse Navigator Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services

As an orthopedic and spine nurse navigator for the Floyd Memorial Joint Replacement and Spine Centers, Laura Crump is a single point of contact for patients. She sets up appointments with physicians, rehab, pain management and follows up with each patient to make sure they

understand their discharge instructions. She is also a coach motivator and helps them through their hospital stay.

Stephanie Jensen, RNDiabetes Nurse EducatorUofL Physicians-Pediatric EndocrinologyWendy L. Novak Diabetes Care CenterKosair Children’s Hospital

As the only certified diabetes educator at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Stephanie Jensen is the coordinator of inpatient diabetes education

for the largest children’s hospital in Kentucky. She is the diabetes educator/liaison for 84 medical residents, 72 medical surgical nurses and more than 100 pediatric ICU nurses. She also served on the Kentucky Board of Nursing task force, which authored House Bill 98. HB 98 pertains to the administration of insulin to children in their school setting.

Tracy Williams, DNPSenior Vice President and System Chief Nursing OfficerNorton Healthcare

Tracy Williams provides leadership and professional development vision for more than 4,200 nurses within Norton Healthcare. She created an academic partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Nursing that will prepare and educate 150 Norton Healthcare BSN employees

over the next seven years to complete their DNP with APRN credentials.

Nucleus Innovation Park DowntownArchitect: Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan Inc. Nucleus Innovation Park Downtown – Market St., an initiative of the University of Louisville Foundation, is a research and development center. The first phase in the nine-acre park is a 200,000-square foot, eight-story building for healthcare accelerators, business incubators and geriatric and aging care corporat ions .

Many green initiatives such as a roof garden and water retention and filtration components contributed to its LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Norton Women’s and Kosair Children’s HospitalArchitect: LMH

Norton Women’s and Kosair Children’s Hospital is a full-service, acute care facility. The vision for the architectural design is based on the “Kentucky Forest” theme. The forest can be seen in design elements, including a large expanse of colorized glass representing a canopy of the

trees. The facility has an intuitive way-finding system, a new inpatient pediatric unit, a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit and healing gardens.

UofL School of Dentistry and UofL Department of Pediatrics at the Sam Swope Kosair Charities CentreArchitect: Planning and Construction Associates

Housed within the Kosair Charities complex, this facility offers a convenient medical/dental home where children with disabilities and chronic health conditions and

children from the community receive care. The UofL Department of Pediatrics at Kosair Charities has nine exam rooms, a laboratory and separate sick- and well-child reception areas. The UofL School of Dentistry, is outfitted with six dental chairs and equipped to meet the special needs of autistic and physically challenged children.

The Facility Design AwardPresented to an architectural firm that demonstrated functional or innovative design in a new or renovated healthcare facility, which improves the delivery of care.

The Passport health Plan Champion in health Award

Presented to Steve Johnson, Executive Director of Governmental, Community and Legislative Affairs, Owensboro Health and Campaign Chair of the 2013 Owensboro Health “Gives” campaign.

Last year, under the direction of Steve Johnson, Owensboro Health partnered with Community Health Charities and United Way to build a new kind of campaign, one that gives employees more choices about

how to give. The campaign giving was all done online through Community Health Charities’ “Giving Matters365.org” platform. The online portal allowed Owensboro Health employees to allocate their contributions as they saw fit. The employees’ giving and organization’s match combined raised a grand total of $300,543.

Meet the host Bill Francis was born in Louisville and graduated from St. Xavier High School. He graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in political science. He began his broadcast career at WAVE radio and TV in the 1970s and worked for WLKY-TV in the 1980s. Francis has been with the Fox 41 news team since 1990. He has covered such stories as the volatile Jefferson County busing riots of the 1970s and several national political conventions. He is married and has two children.

Nazareth Home

Nazareth Home is a 118-skilled bed facility, which offers specific programs for short stay rehabilitation and traditional long-term care nursing encompassing dementia and end-of-life care. Nazareth Home’s legacy of compassion and spirit for innovation focused on the individual has led to consistent staffing and healthy, happy elders. This past

year, Nazareth Home became one of only 200 homes in the country (and the only Kentucky certified one) to utilize the Music and Memory Program.

Signature HealthCARE

Signature HealthCARE provides long-term care, rehabilitation and healthcare services. The company was founded on three organizational pillars: learning, spirituality and intra-preneurship. Each pillar has its own department that provides programming and services. For example, Signature’s Learning Department delivers education via self-paced

equipping communities in establishing supportive health systems that align more closely to their values and unique health needs. She is dedicated to the work of the Partnership for a Compassionate Louisville where she works tirelessly to ignite compassion as the driving force of healthcare in Louisville.

Mark Birdwhistell Vice President, Administration and External AffairsUK HealthCare

Mark Birdwhistell represents UK HealthCare at the local, state and national levels and serves as a national speaker on healthcare policy and Medicaid reform efforts. Prior to this position, Birdwhistell served in senior leadership roles in the private and public sector, including secretary for the Kentucky

Cabinet for Health & Family Services and chief executive officer for CHA Health. He has more than 30 years experience in healthcare.

Alice BridgesVice President, Healthy CommunitiesKentuckyOne Health

Alice Bridges advocates for social justice and health equity— moving beyond the traditional medical model by partnering with residents to improve wellness and well-being. She is especially passionate about the Health Connections Initiative. Launched in September 2013, the Initiative’s

goal is to better serve people from low-income neighborhoods in Louisville who have complex medical needs, disjointed healthcare and high medical costs through home visits. Early data indicates participants are showing dramatic improvement in their ability to manage chronic conditions, reduce depression levels and emergency department visits.

Stephen Wright, MDMedical Director, Kosair Children’s HospitalProfessor of Pediatrics, University of Louisville School of Medicine Chair, Partnership to Eliminate Child Abuse

As chair of the Partnership to Eliminate Child Abuse, Dr. Stephen Wright works on initiatives in Kentucky and Southern Indiana aimed at stopping this crime, including mobilizing caregivers, government officials, physicians

and media to get the word out about the importance of education on bruising patterns and action items if abuse is suspected. Working with lawmakers and other physicians, Wright helped enact a bill requiring physicians involved in the care of children to take mandatory training aimed at early detection of child abuse.

Toni Ganzel, MDDean, School of MedicineProfessor, Division of Otolaryngology, Hiram C. Polk, Jr. MD Department of SurgeryUniversity of Louisville

Dr. Toni Ganzel was named the first female dean of the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2013 following a career as a physician,

professor and administrator. As dean, she leads an organization of 3,400 faculty and staff and 1,000 students. In 2013, the first-year class scored a 99 percent pass rate on the first part of the national medical licensing exam, and a 98 percent pass rate on the second part. The class of 2014 matched to their preferred residency choices at a rate of 97 percent.

Donald Miller, MDDirector, James Graham Brown Cancer CenterJames Graham Brown Professor of Oncology andAssociate Vice President for Health AffairsUniversity of Louisville, School of Medicine

Under Dr. Donald Miller’s leadership, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center developed a nationally recognized research program in cancer drug development with more than a two dozen novel treatments being

studied in their labs, with three entering early phase clinical trials. Miller’s laboratory is currently studying short DNA sequences, which cause cancer cells to “commit suicide.” These genomic DNA sequences will enter clinical trials within the next two years.

Tad Seifert, MDNeurologist, Headache & Concussion CenterDirector, Sports Concussion program, part of Norton Neuroscience Institute

Dr. Tad Seifert cares for all athletes—from youth sports to professional leagues. To date, he is the only fellowship-trained headache neurologist in Kentucky. He launched the Norton Sports Health’s Saturday morning clinic,

which offers injured athletes access to specialists and therapists to treat injuries, including concussions throughout the fall season. In 2012, he helped secure the passage of House Bill 281, the interscholastic concussion bill, which requires any athlete who suffers a concussion to be cleared by a licensed physician before entering a sports competition again.

The Xleratehealth Physician of the Year AwardPresented to a physician who has shown outstanding leadership and vision and has contributed to their workplace leaving a lasting legacy.

Live Empowered ProgramAmerican Diabetes Association

The American Diabetes Association’s Live Empowered program is a faith-based diabetes education initiative geared towards the African-American community. It integrates diabetes awareness and healthy living tips into the lives of the church family (or community center). Trained volunteer ambassadors lead, small

group workshop modules at their church or community center. Pre and post-tests are given after each class, as is healthy living literature. Participants are encouraged to self-record their exercise level and eating habits.

Associate Education ProgramsFloyd Memorial Hospital & Health Services

Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services’ Associate Education programs are tailored to the associates’ needs. Offerings focus on physical, financial, professional and personal development through traditional and online classes. The hospital offers tuition and certification reimbursement, in-house career opportunities, career fit and skills assessments and resume writing and interviewing tutorials. The six-month School at Work program and four-month ECHO (Expanding Your Career in Healthcare Opportunities) programs give the opportunity to expand healthcare career opportunities inside and outside of the organization.

Norton University, Norton Institute for NursingNorton Healthcare

Norton Healthcare’s commitment to life-long learning is sustained through workforce development—offering financial, educational and career planning support to employees and the community. In addition, Norton Institute for Nursing, which fosters innovation and collaboration through research, professional development, nursing practice and outreach, includes formalized nurses’ aid training and nursing mentorships. Norton University provides ongoing training for employees for academic progression and educational, personal and professional development.

Department of Pediatrics Medical Education Program University of Louisville School of Medicine

The Department of Pediatrics’ residency program uses an experiential curriculum. The program developed new curricula in parenting, advocacy, evidence-based medicine, communication and quality improvement. New clinical rotations include Social Justice and Poverty in Child Health and International rotations, which led to a Global Health certificate program, a Child Advocacy rotation and advocacy program PUSH (Pediatricians Urging Safety and Health). Locally, residents are partnering with nonprofits to provide parenting classes and food justice advocacy.
