6 REDMEN FOOTBALL FALL 2014 SEASON

The Montreal Alouettes have played most of their home games at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium since November, 1997. The facility, which turns 99 years old in 2014, is named in memory of Captain Percival Mol-son, a McGill athlete and Canadian Olympian who died in the First World

War. He was inducted posthumously to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was an inaugural honoree to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Molson was born in Cacouna, Que., on Aug. 14, 1880 and developed into one of Can-ada’s most outstanding athletes. He was the youngest player ever to win the Stanley Cup, playing on the 1896 Cup championship Montreal Victorias at the age of 16. He graduated from McGill in 1901 with a B.A. and became the University’s first Olympi-an, competing at the 1904 Summer Games in St. Louis. Molson captained the McGill hockey team, starred in track, racquet sports and football and won the Individual Trophy as the school’s best “all-round athlete” for three consecutive years, a feat un-matched by any male in McGill sports history. He earned every athletic honour the University offered and set a world record in the long jump at the American Athletics Meet in 1900. Molson was renowned for his sportsmanship and earned the unique distinction of never having been penalized in any sport for unfair tactics.

After graduation, Molson became the youngest member to serve on the McGill Board of Governors, chairing its Finance and Stadium committees. He was severely wound-ed overseas in the Battle of Sanctuary Wood on June 2, 1916 and received the Military Cross for gallantry and distinguished conduct in action. He insisted on returning to action and was killed by a direct hit from a trench mortar on the outskirts of Avion, France on July 5, 1917.

The legacy of Molson Stadium is that it represents an inheritance from a generation which nobly served in a long and bloody war. A significant part of the estimated origi-nal $100,000 construction costs came from “Percy” Molson, who bequeathed $75,000 in his will towards the construction of a football stadium on the McGill campus. That generous gift was the equivalent of approximately $1.34 million in today’s currency (based upon the Consumer Price Index).

Overlooking the Montreal skyline from atop Mount Royal, Molson Stadium is re-nowned for its charm, cozy dimensions and great sight lines. It remains one of the most scenic places in Canada to watch a spectator event. The venue serves the Uni-versity as a varsity game and practice field, an intramural pitch and multi-purpose area. Over the past six decades, the Stadium has been host to field hockey for the 1976 Summer Olympics, Drum Corps International competitions, the RHR Blackwatch ceremony presided over by the Queen Mother, concerts by “The Police” (1980) and the Beach Boys (2001), a FIFA soccer tournament and numerous community events. The stadium hosted the 1931 Grey Cup game — a 22-0 victory by the Montreal Winged Wheelers over the Regina Roughriders— in front of 5,112 fans. The 1957 CFL All-Star game was also played there.

Construction on the stadium began in July, 1914 on an area known as Macdonald Park, named after William Macdonald, a benefactor who almost single-handeDefen-sive Liney financed parts of the University. Macdonald Park was to be known as “a playground for McGill students”. Originally known as McGill Graduates’ Stadium, it was designed by famed architect Percy Nobbs and officially opened on Oct. 22, 1915 with the firing of a starter’s pistol by Sir William Peterson, the McGill principal, for a

track meet in front of some 4,000 spectators. It had been hoped that the first event would have been a football game but with the outbreak of the First World War, the football season was cancelled for what proved to be four years and the stadium sat empty during the war, until it was re-dedicated as Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on Oct. 19, 1919. The first football game played there was a 25-2 victory for McGill over Queen’s on Nov. 8, 1919, which marked McGill’s first home game in five years, since a 31-7 win over Queen’s on Nov. 14, 1914.

The Stadium was originally constructed with a 7,676 seat concrete grandstand as large crowds necessitated a bigger facility. The well-drained playing field was encir-cled by a quarter-mile running track, 18 feet in width. An immediate success, Molson Stadium became the home of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association football team, the predecessor of the Montreal Alouettes. By the 1930s, the stadium’s seating capacity had become inadequate and a gradual expansion began. Seating arrange-ments were entirely rebuilt, the first outdoor lighting system in Canada was installed, as was a public address system. Major. D. Stuart Forbes, then director of athletics at McGill, brought in a flock of sheep once in an attempt to improve the grass! A south grandstand was constructed and the north side was heightened. These projects brought the capacity to approximately 19,500 by the early 1960s. McGill was enjoy-ing large crowds and a record attendance of 19,386 was recorded for a game in 1950.

The Alouettes, formed in 1946, were also enjoying capacity crowds at the smaller Delormier Stadium from 1946 to 1953. They moved to Molson Stadium in 1954 and stayed until 1967. The all-time attendance record at Molson Stadium was 26,191 for a 27-21 victory by Montreal over Hamilton on Sept. 12, 1959. In 1951 Molson Stadium was also filled to capacity for the visit of Princess Elizabeth. With the advent of tele-vision and improved Montreal highways during the 1960s, the city became focused on the world’s fair, known as “Expo 67”. As intercollegiate crowds at McGill began to drop significantly, Molson Stadium began a slow decay. The Alouettes moved to the larger and newly-constructed Autostade -- which had 33,172 seats -- in 1968. They played there through 1971, before switching back to Molson Stadium for the 1972 campaign, then moved back to the Autostade, where they played from 1973 to 1976, before moving to Olympic Stadium the year after the Montreal Olympics.

In 1975, Molson Stadium received a major facelift with a government-sponsored up-grade to the facilities, including the installation of AstroTurf for field hockey during the 1976 Summer Olympics. It marked the first time that artificial turf was used for in the Olympic Games. Capacity was increased to over 20,000 with the addition of temporary seats. After 10 winters, the AstroTurf was in need of a new surface and six months after future Alouettes star Michael Soles led the McGill Redmen to the Vanier Cup in 1987, a new AstroTurf-8 carpet was installed at a cost of approximately $1

million. Much of the funding was provided by the Molson Foundation.

In 1997, the Alouettes were forced to host a playoff game at Molson Stadium due to a concert by the Irish rock band U2 at Olympic Stadium. The game, versus the B.C. Lions on Nov. 2, was the first Alouettes game at McGill since 1972 and the Als drew an announced crowd of 16,257 after spending about $55,000 to renovate and expand the seating capacity to 18,027 with the addition of temporary end-zone seats. Over the winter of 1998, the CFL’s board of governors, in a move initiated by the clubs in western Canada, decided to provide the Alouettes with a grant of at least $250,000, and perhaps as much as $300,000, to assist with the repairs. In the spring of 1998, additional renovations valued at $309,000 were made by the Alouettes and the seat-ing capacity was expanded to 17,317. In the spring of 1999, the Alouettes installed temporary bleachers, increasing the capacity to 19,461. A further increase in the 2001 season improved seating capacity to 19,601 with the addition of temporary seating and that figure was increased to 20,002 in time for the 2002 campaign.

On Oct. 2, 2001, Pierre Bourque, mayor of Montreal, announced that an agreement had been signed with Larry Smith (then-president of the Alouettes), and Luc Vinet, then provost and vice-principal academic at McGill, to expand and renovate the sta-dium. Bourque pledged $4 million toward the $12.5-million expansion project, with agreements in place for the balance to come from the federal and provincial gov-ernments under the federal infrastructure program. The Alouettes also committed about $500,000 and signed a 10-year stadium lease with the University. Renovations were eventually completed in time for the 2004 season and Alouettes owner Robert Wetenhall then announced that his team had spent $1.2-million on stadium improve-ments.

The 2004 improvements included the replacement of the 13-year-old AstroTurf sur-face with a new FieldTurf surface and expansion of the bleacher-type seating capaci-ty to 20,202. The areas under both the north and south grandstands were completely renovated, including upgraded dressing rooms, showers, officials’ rooms, concession stands and washrooms. Some 15 luxury boxes were added and the outdoor light-ing was significantly enhanced, in addition to the stadium access roads. In return, the public gained access to McGill’s athletic facilities, which were previously only available to students, staff and graduates. In 2010, the stadium underwent a further facelift at a cost of $29.355 million, with funding from the Quebec provincial and municipal governments, as well as a private contribution from the Wetenhall family. Seating capacity was increased to 25,012, along with the addition of 18 private loges and the state-of-the-art video board became a permanent installation. In 2013, a new drainage system was installed along with a high-performance FieldTurf Revolution surface at a cost of $1.445 million.

Prior to joining McGill, Uttley was the special teams coordinator and coached defensive backs at the University of British Columbia for two seasons. He also spent six campaigns at Acadia University, where he coached receivers (2001) and linebackers (2002-03) before serving his final two years with the Axemen as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator (2004-05). Uttley began his coaching career as an assistant with the Huronia Stallions of the Ontario Varsity Football League each summer from 1998 to 2002. A product of Park Street Collegiate Institute in Orillia, he went on to play junior for the Burlington Braves, then played at Champlain Regional College in Lennoxville, Que., where he was part of their 1995 Bol d’Or junior college championship. Uttley then played five seasons at middle linebacker for Acadia (1996 to 2000) where he was a four-year starter and team captain in his final two seasons. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in 2000, followed by an education degree (2004) and a master’s degree in education (2011). During his tenure at Acadia, Uttley coached eight CIS All-Canadians, three President’s Trophy nominees (most outstanding defensive player in the CIS), a J.P. Metras Trophy nominee (most outstanding lineman), a Peter Gorman nominee (most outstanding rookie) and two Russ Jackson Award nominees (for academics, athletics and citizenship).

PATRICK BOIES, a 38-year-old native of Ste. Foy, Que., was appointed offensive coordinator of the team in January 2012 and the title of assistant head coach was added in 2013. Prior to joining the Redmen staff, he coached for eight seasons at Collège François-Xavier Garneau, including six years as head coach. In 2011, he guided the Élans to a Bol d’Or Division 1 championship, posting an impressive 59-31 upset over league-leading Collège Vieux-Montreal in the final, to establish a Bol d’Or record for most points scored in a game. He also led F.X. Garneau to a Bol d’Or title in 2008 when they defeated Champlain-Lennoxville 45-23 in the collegiate AAA final. Boies has also served as head coach of Team Quebec for the 2014 Canada Cup and served as offensive coordinator for Team Canada, winning the world championship in 2012 at Austin Texas. In 2013, he coordinated the offence for Team Quebec, winning the Canada Cup national championship in Moncton, N.B. Boies previously served as the defensive coordinator at Collège Beauce-Appa-laches in 2002 and head coach in France with the Cannes Iron Masks, which went 10-0 in 2005 enroute to capturing the professional Div. 2 Championship. During his playing days, Boies was a second-team All-Canadian defensive back with the Laval Rouge et Or from 1997 to 2001. He served as a co-captain and helped Laval win their first Vanier Cup national title in 1999.

RONALD HILAIRE, a 30-year-old native of Laval, Que., was appointed defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at McGill in February, 2014 after serving in a similar ca-pacity for three years with the Montréal Carabins, where he was also the recruiting coordinator. Prior to working with the Carabins, he was a defensive line coach at College du Vieux Montreal in 2010 and 2011. He also coaches with the Canadian under-18 team as co-defensive coordinator and D-line coach and was the defensive coordinator of Team Quebec for the 2014 Canada Cup. Hilaire played four seasons at the University of Buffalo as a defensive lineman, graduating with a degree in business administration in 2009. He was a fourth-round pick (27th overall) by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2008 Canadian Football League draft. Prior to attending Buffalo, he played three seasons at Collège du Vieux-Montréal, where he was a co-captain, earned all-conference honours and was the league defensive player of the year in 2004 and played on three Bol d’Or championship teams. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Canadian U-18 squad and has coached with Team Quebec since 2012.

Alain Mainguy

JEROME ERDMAN returned to McGill in January 2013, serving as special teams coordinator. He previously coached special teams and the defensive line at McGill in 2009. Prior to rejoining the Redmen, Erdman was with the UBC Thunderbirds from 2010-12 as a defensive coordinator after filling the role during the 2000-01 season before moving on to a number of positions at the CFL and CIS level that included stops as coach of the UBC secondary in 2002 and 2007. He began his second tenure at UBC in 2010 under head coach Shawn Olson. A standout defensive back at Simon Fraser University from 1979 to 1981, Erdman carried over that success to the pro level, playing eight seasons in the CFL for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (winning the 1984 Grey Cup), Ottawa Roughriders, and Edmonton Eskimos before a five-year stint with the Glasgow Lions in Europe capped off a very successful playing career. Erdman began his coaching career with the Lions while he was still playing, leading the Glasgow defence for four seasons before taking over as head coach in 1996 after his on-field retirement. He then spent three years with the Scottish Claymores (NFL Europe) before returning to Canada and his first stint with UBC. From 2002-06, Erdman was on staff with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats coaching both the linebackers and special team units. After his second tour of duty with UBC in 2007, he took over as receivers coach and special teams assistant with the Toronto Argonauts for the 2008 CFL season.

BENOIT GROULX was the offensive coordinator at College Notre Dame in 2013 and with the Bishops Gaiters in 2010-2012. He served in a similar capacity with Team Quebec, helping lead them to Canada Cup championships in 2011 and 2012. Groulx has nine years of coaching experience, including stints in various football camps. He coached at the Académie Saint-Louis from 2012 to 2014 and served as director of sports and football program coordinator at Curé-Antoine Labelle, a high school in Laval, Que. He was also head coach and offensive coordinator of the Quebec City Monarks of the Quebec Major Football League in 2009, and was an assistant with the Élites de Québec U-15 and U-17 teams at the Wilson Cup Challenge in 2007 and 2008. He had a stellar playing career, guiding Laval to a pair of CIS national titles, winning the Vanier Cup in 2006 and 2008. With the Rouge et Or, he was an All-Canadian and three-time RSEQ conference player of the year, winning the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2008 as the most outstanding player in CIS football. After five seasons at Laval, from 2005 to 2009, Groulx established an RSEQ league record for career touchdown passes with 66, which currently ranks seventh in CIS history and holds the CIS record for single-season completion percentage (75.2% in 2008). Six years after retiring, he is still ranked fourth among the league’s all-time leaders for passing yards (8,530), fourth in pass completions (612) and eighth in pass attempts (853). He is ranked second for most TD passes in an RSEQ game (6). Prior to joining Laval, he played at the CEGEP level with the Vieux-Montréal Spartiates (2002-2004) winning the Bol d’Or as league champion all three seasons. He was twice named the CEGEP AAA league MVP (2003 and 2004). He also won a silver medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2004 NFL Global Junior Championship.

IGOR BOJANIC, a native of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., returns for his fourth season in 2014 as the running backs coach after serving in the same position in 2012 and 2013. He began coaching with the Redmen as an offensive assistant in the 2011 season. He coached the 2009 and 2010 seasons at John Abbott College, where he previously played. At JAC, he served as offensive coordinator in his first season and receivers coach in his second campaign. Bojanic began coaching with the Roxboro Raiders (Juvenile AA) as the running backs coach in 1996 and moved up to the Bantam North Shore Lions in 1997, where he spent three seasons with the running backs, before taking over as head coach in 2000. The next year, he joined the North Shore Mustangs, serving two seasons as a receivers coach, then switched to running backs in 2003, 2005 and 2006. A product of the North Shore, he played for the North Shore Lions (87-88) and Mustangs (89-90) before moving up the CEGEP ranks for John Abbott and ending his playing days in junior with the North Shore Broncos in 1994 and 1995.

DAVE EDMUNDS was appointed the defensive backs coach at McGill in February 2014 after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach (linebackers and defensive backs) at the University of Montreal, where he helped develop multiple all-stars and the 2013 RSEQ rookie of the year. Prior to coaching in the CIS, Edmunds spent three years at the CEGEP AAA level, serving as a defensive backs coach with the Vanier Cheetahs (2011) and coaching linebackers with the Champlain Cougars (2006 and 2007), where he dou-bled as defensive coordinator in his final season. He also spent 10 years as a high-school coach, including a half-dozen seasons with perennial powerhouse College Notre-Dame. Edmunds graduated from the University of Sherbrooke with a bachelor’s degree in physical & health education (2007) and a Certificate in Chemistry (2008). He followed that with a law degree in 2014 from the University of Montreal.

FALL 2014 SEASON REDMEN FOOTBALL 17

McGill University is one of Canada’s best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the country’s leading re-search-intensive universities. With students coming to Mc-Gill from about 160 countries, our student body is the most

internationally diverse of any medical-doctoral university in Canada.

McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campus-es, 11 faculties, more than 300 programs of study, and close to 40,000 students. The University partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year. Today under the leadership of Princi-pal Suzanne Fortier, McGill University is recognized as one of the Canada’s top research-intensive universities. Excelling in the quality of its research, education and service to the community, McGill ranks among the leading universities in the world. Our full-time professors lead the country with the highest research funding. The ability to balance academic excellence with the extracurricular is a hallmark of the McGill student. Our rich athletic tradition includes many Olym-pians as well as thousands of McGill students who participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life. With two Prime Ministers, three astronauts, four Nobel laureates and a six-time Stanley Cup winner—plus a host of trailblazers in arts, sciences, business and public service—McGill alumni have left their imprint on our world and our universe. Some 200,000 living alumni make a difference every day, improving lives through their groundbreaking medical discoveries, plumb-ing the human condition in thought-provoking art and driving the economy with their business acumen.

McGill is among the leading academic institutions in the world with regard to the development of men’s and women’s athletics. At the varsity level, McGill

teams are steeped in tradition and the origins of sport. The football team was founded in 1872 and had its “intercollegiate baptism” on May 13, 1874 when it traveled to Cambridge and played Harvard in the world’s first “North American style” intercollegiate football game.

In 1873 James Creighton, a McGill law student, devised some informal rules for a new game which later became known as ice hockey. On March 3, 1875, two in-formal teams composed mainly of McGill students, played in what is recognized as the first indoor game of hockey. Two years later, McGill students formed the first organized hockey team and defeated the Victoria Skating Club 1-0 in their first official game, played on January 3, 1877.

Basketball was founded in December of 1891 by James Naismith of Almonte, Ontario, who had graduated from McGill with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1889 and became McGill’s first Director of Athletics in 1890. A year later, he moved onto a new job at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where in 1891, Naismith devised the rules to the game of basketball. The sport was first played in Montreal’s YMCA in 1892 and subsequently began at Mc-Gill with inter-faculty games in 1894. A decade later, McGill met and defeated Queen’s in the first ever-Canadian intercollegiate basketball game in Kingston, Ontario, on February 6, 1904.

Currently, with 28 different intercollegiate teams, McGill ranks among Canadian universities in total number of sports clubs. There are over 700 intramural teams plus an extensive Fitness and Recreation program that encompasses a wide va-riety (over 100) of non-credit fitness and recreation courses.
