    President's Message

Can everyone agree with the statement thatMarch came in like a lion this year? VDOT's roadplowing crews have gotten a work out this year.It is starting to feel like we live in the northeastto not the southeast. I am ready to thaw out andembrace spring. During last month's PopsicleBridge contest we saw the next generation ofengineers making tremendous strides toward joining our ranks. Seeds ofcuriosity have been planted by their teachers and mentors. Sitting at the'Ask an Engineer' table I responded to a multitude of questions centeredaround will my bridge stand up and where will it fail. Given this smallsampling I would say there ample inquisitive students growing inRichmond. Ashley Johnson did an excellent job organizing and managingthe Popsicle Bridge Contest. Look for her review of the event further inthe newsletter. This event has grown every year and received recognition this year by theRichmond Times Dispatch with interviews and coverage. Thank you to allwho participated and those who supported behind the scenes to make ourPopsicle Bridge event a success.

From destructive means of analysis, the Popsicle Bridge contest, to non-destructive means we move to our March speaker, Mr. Ted Dean. Mr. Deanis President of ATS International and is coming to speak with us on March

March Branch Meeting - Non-Destructive Evaluations:Geophysical Methods Applied to Engineering andEnvironmental Projects

Situations are frequently encountered in engineering where information isrequired that is impractical, expensive, or even impossible to obtain byconventional means. Geophysical methods allow the collection ofinformation on earth and man-made materials without the need forboring, coring, or other physical sampling. Moreover, geophysical data canoften be used to guide physical sampling and thus improve the value ofthe data obtained. This presentation will describe several of the mostversatile geophysical methods and provide examples of the applications ofeach method. The methods will include those that are primarily applicableto earth materials for geotechnical and environmental studies, and thosethat are primarily applicable to man-made materials for structural andcivil engineering studies.
