The Bears will be led by senior quarterback Miles Freeman, who finished with 968 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing and 632 yards and six scores passing in 2013.

Overview What to do for an encore? Lenoir-Rhynenearlyreachedthetopof the football world in 2013, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Champi-onship game before coming up short to NorthwestMissouriState. Although it’s hard for anybody to dupli-cate that type of success, the Bears appear to be in strong position to at least make another run. A deeper look inside the program shows a team which has slowly gotten better over time, building depth with each passing season as evidence by its six straight years of improvement. The Bears (13-2), the three-time defend-ing South Atlantic Conference Champions, return plenty of starters – 18 to be exact – including several All-Americans. Lenoir-Rhyne,thesecond-rankedteamin the country last year, should be in good hands under new Head Coach Ian Shields. Thefive-yearoffensivecoordinatoratArmy (2009-13) inherits a team with a lot of experience and the combination of a new coaching staff and an established program should make for another exciting year in 2014 for the Bears.

Offense The Bears’ offense rose to new heights last fall, setting an NCAA all-time single-season record for rushing yards (5,563) and leading the nation in rush offense (370.9 ypg) for the second time in four years. A lot of credit can be given to the men upfront.Lenoir-Rhynehadoneof itsbest offensive lines in school history last year but will have to replace three starters: ParkerMurray,BenCarrionandfirst-teamall-leagueperformerZackBunn. However, the Bears do welcome back All-American senior Joe Ray (Atlanta, Ga.).RaywontheJacobsBlockingTrophyin 2013, given annually to the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Ray,theteam’sstartingrighttackle, willbe asked to anchor a unit which has poten-tial but is in the middle of transition. Sophomore Jacob Slagle (Sharpsburg, Ga.) looks to take over the left tackle spot. SlaglefilledinadmirablywhenRaywentdown with injury in a 42-14 win over West Chesterinthenationalsemifinalslastyear.

The other returning starter for the Bears is senior left guard Jim Bayer(Law-renceville, Ga.). Bayer is entering his third year as a starter and could challenge for all-league accolades. The Bears will look to junior Dale Howard (Baxley, Ga.) to take over center duties while right guard should be in the hands of senior Matt Villanti (Katy, Texas), a transfer from Army. SeniorquarterbackMiles Freeman (Sacramento, Calif.) is expected to pick up where he left off last year before a leg injury ended his season in early November. Freeman was leading the team in rushing yards (107.6 ypg) to go along with 632 yards passing and 17 total touchdowns before the injury. Freeman was playing as well as anybody in the conference and looks to end his career on a high note. Backing up Freeman is talented redshirt freshman Evin Sims (Greenwood, S.C.). Lenoir-Rhynereturnsastableof run-ning backs led by senior tailback Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) and senior full-back Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.). Spears, a two-time First-Team All-SAC honoree(2012-13),hasledthesquadinrushing yards the last two seasons includ-

ing a 984-yard, seven-touchdown perfor-mance last fall. Spears, the conference champion in the 100-meter dash in outdoor track and field,alsoaveraged8.8yardspercarryandcaught 10 passes for 184 yards and two scores. Playing opposite Spears at the other halfback spot should be junior Michael Patrick (Atlanta, Ga.), who came on stronglastseasonandfinishedwith428yardsonthegroundandfivescores.Asa full-time starter now, Patrick’s numbers should undoubtedly increase. Sophomore James Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and senior Kevin Eckel (Haverford, Pa.) are penciled in as back-ups at tailback entering fall camp. At his fullback position, Whitaker has earned All-American honors the last two years. Whitaker rushed for 912 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013 and continues to be one of the most productive players the Bears have had recently. Senior Chris Robinson (Newnan, Ga.) isastrongreserveatfullback.Robinsonhas 621 yards rushing and eight touch-downs so far in his career. Junior Greyson Wells (West Jefferson, N.C.) emerged as the team’s go-to receiver lastfall,finishingwith19receptionsfor410 yards and seven touchdown catches. Senior Greg Baker (Woodbine, Ga.) is another viable option for the Bears. Baker totaled nine catches for 168 yards in 2013. Other wideouts looking to get in the mix are sophomore Victor Brannan (Powder Springs, Ga.) and junior Patrick Rendle-man (Lincolnton,N.C.).

Defense Lenoir-Rhynehasdevelopedoneof thebest defenses in not only the conference but the region and nation as well. The Bears should be able to maintain that high level of play this year with the return of several key players including a couple of All-Americans. In the secondary, the Bears must replace the SAC Defensive Player Of The Year in 2013–freesafetyAll-AmericanMichaelGreen–andtwo-timefirst-teamall-leaguehonoreeMyerNolan. At the free safety spot, the Bears will look at either sophomore C.J. Cody (Powder Springs, Ga.) or redshirt freshman Rashad Mathis (Valdosta, Ga.). Cody totaled 12 takedowns last season. The Bears appear to be in good hands at cornerback with the return of seniors O’neil Blake (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Joe Anderson(Lilburn,Ga.),apairof pre-season all-league honorees. Blake, a second-team all-league per-former in 2013, totaled 76 tackles, 12 pass break-ups and three picks last year while Anderson totaled 78 takedowns and an interception. The linebackers will be anchored by senior Tanner Botts(Lawrenceville,Ga.).A 2013 All-American, Tanner Botts led the team once again in tackles with 134 and will be joined by senior Tyler Botts(Law-renceville, Ga.) or junior Stephen Amoah (Charlotte, N.C.) on the inside. Joining Singleton on the outside is junior linebacker Placid Ajoku (Powder Springs, Ga.). Ajoku had four sacks last season and appears ready to take over as a full-time starter.
