WELCOME

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I am delighted to inform you that our Activities week programme for 2014 has now been launched with assemblies to the participating year groups 8, 9 and 12. The range of activities is as impressive as ever. You will find all the details within the pages of this brochure. There is something here to suit all tastes and abilities, whether your daughter chooses to go away or stay on the island there should be something of interest to her. Activities Week gives the students a chance to learn new skills, try different activities, and explore new environments. It also helps them get to know other students in different year groups and see staff in a less formal setting.

Please print off and complete the form at the back of this booklet and return to the College Office by Friday 4th October. Please be aware that it may not always be possible to guarantee that students will get their first choice, particularly for very popular activities. In the event that an activity or trip is oversubscribed a waiting list will be kept. Once the date has passed for applications these will be sorted and careful consideration given to the choices made. The places will not be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please also note that many of the on-island activities are at different locations and getting to the venues will be your daughter’s responsibility.

(For students in Year 9: should your daughter be considering applying to Hautlieu she must only select an on-Island activity as she will not be able to take part in our Activities Week if she is successful in gaining a place. Please indicate on the form if this is a possibility.)

I will notify you when the places have been allocated and you will need to confirm your daughter’s place by the date given by way of a deposit; this deposit is non-refundable in the event of off-island trips. Upon receipt of the deposit the activity leader will be in touch with you regarding further payments and details. It is JCG policy that if full payment is not received by the deadline given students will not be allowed to participate. JCG makes use of the insurance cover provided by ESC; in the event of a claim becoming necessary for your daughter please note that the £50.00 insurance excess will apply.

There is a fund in College to help towards the costs of trips for those students who receive a bursary. If you would like to apply for this please contact Mrs S. Parsons, PA to the Principal on: [email protected] who will be happy to send you an application form.

I hope you and your daughter enjoy discussing what she would like to take part in during this very special week and make I take this opportunity to express my grateful thanks to all the staff at the College, both teaching and non-teaching, who work so hard to make Activities Week such a fantastic experience for our students.

Kind regards,

Madeleine TaylorActivities Week [email protected]

The area is filled with ancient Mayan temples and is one of the most important habitats for endangered mammals such as the jaguar and tapir. For the first part of the week the group will be learning some basic jungle skills and survey techniques in base camp and they will take part in the Introduction to the Ancient Maya and Neotropical Ecology courses. For the second week the group will travel to the Marine Research Centre in Akumal on the Caribbean coast, where students

can learn to scuba dive to PADI Open Water level. MOROCCO - Sahara Explorer

Activity Description and Places to be Visited

Although only 3 hours from the UK, Morocco is centuries apart – still rooted in medieval times. The country’s physical attributes are extraordinary. This itinerary will allow you to experience some of the geographical and geological wonders that this amazing country can offer, as well as experiencing the true warmth of its people - the Berber and the Arabs. Today most Moroccan’s can claim both ancestries.

Day 1 Arrive Marrakech (Monday 14 July 2014)Jersey to London Gatwick. London Gatwick to Marrakesh.

Day 2 Ouarzazate Tour of Marrakesh in the morning. After lunch, take an exhilarating drive up into the High Atlas on a series of twists and turns. This is really where the words ‘the journey is the thing’

rings true. Your journey over the impressive High Atlas range of mountains reaches a height of 2206m on the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass.

Day 3 Auberge Desert Camp (in tents!)Travel along the beautiful Valley du Dades which follows the Kasbah routes and is known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. Stop at the Khatarras to see how the wells and tunnels have helped the search for the most elusive of elements – water. A brief stop at the Sources Mimouna will be made to see the work of one man who has been successful in his search - see the wells and look out for the water clock! Here you can learn about camel herders on their migratory cycle. The area also shows great examples of sand encroachment. Continue to Erfoud, another Foreign Legion outpost and spend time in a fossil factory. This area is rich in fossils and you can see how they polish and craft tables, chairs etc from large slabs of fossil-filled marble.

MOROCCO - Sahara Explorer

Day 4 OuarzazateAn early start not to be missed - witness the sun rising over the Sahara. Meet the ‘men in blue’ who will assist you as you mount your camel for the morning’s trek across the dunes – stopping to observe the sunrise. Whilst holding on tight to your camel, watch how this incredible animal has adapted to walking on the constantly shifting sands. These are the Great Dunes of Erg Chebbi in the Sahara Desert. After breakfast and a quick shower, head back to Ouarzazate via the southern route through the valley between the Jbels Sarhro, then have lunch in Alnif. Travel via N’Kob, which has caves with pre-historic drawings then stop at the town of Agdz, famous for its dates. Observe and take pictures as buyers haggle with sellers for large packs of these tasty treats. Hopefully during your journey along this southern route, which takes in the Tizi-n-Tinifitt Pass (1860 metres), you’ll have a chance to stop and experience a Berber market before reaching Ouarzazate.

Day 5 Ourzazate – Marrakech - LGWAfter breakfast it is time to explore the former Foreign Legion town of Ouarzazate. Which includes the Kasbah of Taourit. This town has a thriving film industry and you will have time to visit one of the Atlas film studios and museums to see where scenes from Gladiator, The Kingdom of Heaven and The Hills Have Eyes were shot. Ouarzazate can also boast Lawrence of Arabia and The Sheltering Sky amongst its film credits. A stop at the UNESCO heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou – one of the

most spectacular sights of the Atlas, perched in an excellent defensive position. This collection of Kasbahs is among the most elaborately decorated and crenellated in the region. Cross the small river and climb the steps to the top of this incredible fortress for amazing views. Take a guided tour and it may be possible to see inside a home of one of the Kasbah’s inhabitants. Once again, travel across the Tiz-n-Tichka Pass back before arriving back in Marrakesh. Visit Marrakech’s famous, bustling square - Djemaa El Fbna. Watch the snake charmers, acrobats, water-sellers, dancers and musicians that make this a colourful and much-photographed location

Activity Description and Places to be Visited

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Normandy Landings, in which 160,000 soldiers landed on the coast of France on 6th June 1944, JCG is offering the chance to visit the main sites of the ensuing conflict.

Ahead of the visit you will work with local historian and former JCG teacher Dr Sean Dettman to identify and research the experience of American and British soldiers during the Normandy Landings. Students will also visit the landing sites at all five of the Normandy Beaches; Gold, Juno, Omaha, Sword and Utah. Students will also visit the sites of a number of the inland battles.

The estimated price would include all accommodation, transport, entry to museums and meals although students may wish to bring a small amount of spending money.
