I hope your summer was filled with moments of relaxation and family time as you head back to school to change the lives of your students through music education! I am excited to begin my 21st year of teaching and also my first year as President of IMEA. I am honored to be serving all of you in this capacity and ask that you would join me in helping IMEA continue to be a supportive force for all music educators in our state! As we begin a new year, I would like to ask if you have a desire to be more involved in IMEA to let your district leadership know and they will let the IMEA board know as well. I remember when I was in my first few years of teaching, I didn't think I had much to offer IMEA. Through volunteering, I realized that I had things to offer that helped build my confidence as a music educator and connect with all the amazing music educators we have in our state. I would love to see as many of you volunteer for things to help lighten the load of the general leadership. There is always something that we could use help with. We have moved to All State as a yearly event and hope that you will encourage your students to audition for All Northwest/All State as they look for ways to enhance their music experience! I hope that this move to All State every year will allow more students to enjoy the All State experience and in turn give your school programs a place for leaders to excel. Auditions open on September 1 and continue through October 1. All State will be in Coeur d'Alene for rehearsals and Spokane for the final performance. We hope you will take advantage of attending All Northwest while your students are preparing their music for their performances! Please check the IMEA website for more information. One of the things that I am passionate about is helping our students become more proactive in their own music experience and education. Three years ago, Vallivue High School started a Tri-M Chapter. This is an honor society for music students. At our school we use Tri-M as a way to give back to our community by donating to a local charity every spring with our Talent Show and also serving each other in our school by ushering for concerts and finding ways to serve in the community. This organization has shown me that students passionate about music are willing to serve for causes that they are passionate about. I hope that you will consider starting a Tri-M Honor Society chapter in your Middle/JH/High School. I would love to see chapters springing up all over the state and share ways in which they can promote the benefits of music education from a student perspective. If you have any questions about this, please email me, and I will send you more information. I would also love to hear about what your organization is doing to show how music education gives back to our communities! Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for what you do day in and day out. I am product of Idaho Music Education, and I am proud to represent all of you on a national level. I believe that it is music education that helps students have a break from all the many tests and pressures that they are put through in a school year! I hope that you will reach out to another music educator when things get rough. There is nothing more comforting than to know that we all go through similar things and that there is longevity in this profession! I hope that your year stretches you into greatness! You will hear more about them as we begin the newschool year and you will also hear about the Cornerstone Assess-ments as they continue to be developed.

If you haven’t checked out the new NAfME Advocacy Cam-paign, broader minded - Beyond the Bubbles, do so now! Go towww.broaderminded.com, and explore the site and take time towatch the short video. Click on the “Share your Story” tab and letthe world know the importance of music education in your lifeand in the lives of your students.

NAfME is the voice for music education in the United Statesand our voice has become even larger via the Music EducationPolicy Roundtable. Started by NAfME, the organization now hasover thirty members representing hundreds of thousands of mu-sic advocates. The growth of the Roundtable has been phenome-nal! Their collective voice is dedicated to year-round advocacy ef-forts through the building of strong partnerships with like-minded groups that they have turned into a highly influential mu-sic coalition.

Finally on a more local front, the Northwest Division has anexciting opportunity. With the support and resources fromthe national office, our division has the opportunity toengage in a membership campaign. Our goal is to reach andengage potential new members through a collective membershipcampaign. With the Northwest conference coming up, we havethe unique opportunity to reach out to potential new membersthrough some incentives offered via the conference. It is really ano lose and a win/win endeavor. The efforts will be coordinatedthrough the national office and Ginny Reese, (our NAfME NW Di-vision Liaison). They will work with the states to help identify po-tential new members and the campaigns will be customized foreach state. So far, five states are on board. Look for more infor-mation from your MEA’s about this exciting opportunity.

Music advocacy has always been, and will continue to be, animportant part of all our efforts. A larger membership means astronger advocacy voice. This along with new National Standards, the Music Education Policy Roundtable, and the Broader MindedCampaign, all work together to insure that music education re-mains a part of basic education. In July, I had the privilege toteach a current issues class in our summer masters program. Thecourse dealt with advocacy issues, the new standards and teacherevaluation. There were 21 bright young teachers in the class, andas you can imagine, there was never a dull moment in the class. They all were dealing with “issues” and all of those issues pointedto the importance of basic advocacy on a local, state, regional andnational level. It became very clear to us that the topics men-tioned above in this article work together to support them in theclassroom. If these students are any indication, the future of mu-sic education is in good hands. They know so much more than Iknew when I was their age!

In closing, thank you for all you do for students and I look for-ward to seeing you all in Spokane — Satisfaction Guaranteed!

New Role for Mike Klinger of Synthesis Midi Workshop

Many of you know Mike Klinger with The Synthesis Midi Workshop. He has been a major influence in the training of Idaho music teachers invarious music technology workshops for the past 30 years and also an ac-ademic dealer for music technology software/hardware saving teacherslots of money of the years.

Mike has recently become the NW Educational Accounts Manager fora company called Music First (don't worry he still keep doing what he hasalways done). “I heard about this company and the wonderful music on-line classroom complete with all of the right software tools and immedi-ately fell in love with them.”

Music First (www.musicfirst.com) is an online music classroom com-plete that you can create your own units, lessons, tasks, and assessments. Its online classroom links to ten different software tools for students tocomplete their online assignments with and then submit them directly tothe teacher. The assignments go into the teachers gradebook, includedwith the online classroom.

“The major advantages to this wonderful system are that every studentcan use his/her own portable device (i.e. iPads, Android, Mac, PC, etc);everything resides in the cloud so no software downloads and installs; up-dates are free; your IT person will love it as there is nothing for them todo on their end of things and it works on all devices. Best of all the cost isonly between $2-4 per student per year.”

Mike says he is delighted to be on the Music First team and sees it asan absolute necessity for the music classroom. Mike is willing to give youa free demo of Music First; just email him at [email protected]

The recently concluded Great Basin Jazz Camp is being de-scribed as one of the best music camps in the region. Several localeducators came by to observe the operation of the Camp this yearin Ontario, Oregon and came away with glowing accounts of theinstructors, the curriculum and the students.

The high point of the Camp was the presence of the great JohnClayton, co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra andrenowned as one of the world's finest double bass players. In anemail to Camp Executive Director Mike Allen, he made this ob-servation about students at Camp: “ I was struck by the enthu-siasm of the students. What a well focused bunch!” Thanks verymuch, John for coming and your wonderful thoughts and obser-vations!! Camp Executive Director Mike Allen remarked that stu-dents who attend Camp each year are always very focused and at-tentive. “ They want to be here, said Allen. “They know this is aninvaluable experience and come to take advantage of what thisCamp has to offer over other similar Camps.”
