“Volcans, La vie de la Terre” On Tuesday 21 January 2014 the Geography Department in cooperation with the French Department accompanied the A
Level Geography students to the Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition “Volcans, La vie de la Terre”.
The exhibition was organised by the French Institute of Cyprus, in cooperation with Hellenic Bank, in partnership with the
Geological Survey Department of Cyprus, and with the support of Total.
“Volcanoes, the life of Earth” has three main components: an interactive exhibition displaying experiments (conducted by
the Centre for the Promotion of Scientific Culture, Technology and Industrial Area Centre/Orleans-France); geological
maps, rocks and minerals from Cyprus (provided by the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus); historical books, Nea-
politan gouaches, prints and photographs (from private collections) of volcanic landforms and eruptions (Marina Olympius
Lycourgos collection).
Litter is a problem that can
be controlled. Education is
an important tool. People who
are aware of the dangers of
litter often make more of an
effort to always put their trash
in the correct place. They also
spread the word to others
they see littering and teach
them to dispose of garbage
the right way

The Kouris Reservoir Clean-Up
On Sunday 23 February 2014 The Heritage Private School Geography Department ran a clean-up to remove litter from the Kouris Reservoir. We had an amazing turn out with over 40 people from the school and local community showing up to assist! Volunteers collected more than 50 bags of rubbish and a wide variety of items including mattresses, couches, bikes, tires, plastic bottles, plastic bags and aluminium cans. The clean-up was initiated by two of the Heritages’ Geography students Jessica Goldsworthy and Ekaterina Shipilova in Year 12. They were instrumental in their organisation, promotion and execution of the clean-up! Their determination and effort to run this clean-up serve as an inspiration to all ages to generate positive change in their local community and to shed light on the very serious issue of litter in Cyprus. The clean-up was also fuelled by collaboration from the Photography and Art Departments in support of the event. Jessica worked with the Photography Department to shoot photos of students dressed as ‘Environment Superheroes’ while Ekaterina Shipilova created a sculpture of a sea turtle from the recyclable materials collect-ed the day of the clean-up. THANK YOU to everyone that participated in the event, and especially to Jessica and Ekaterina! We would also like to thank CYMEPA for providing the bags and gloves and Mary’s Dinner Club for donating delicious goodies for our volunteers!

The students in Year 8 had a great time at the Lanitis Centre. They had a talk about the artist Val-entinos Charalambous whose work is on exhibition. The artist is a leading ceramic artist, now aged 86 years old and living in Limassol. The work is mostly large scale and follows the 'totem' theme which those students had been following this term. The students produced some lovely drawing studies of the ceramic works and they later visited the Molos sculpture site at the sea front. The weather stayed fine and the students were wonderful. We will all look forward to our next opportunity for an art trip. In November several students visited the exhibition and were lucky enough to be introduced to The President, Mr Antoniades. Our student teacher Ms Erin and Head of Art Miss Wright escorted both groups. We would like to also express our gratitude to Ms Erin for the work she has done in the department this term. If there are any ceramicists reading this who would be interested in giving a demonstration in class, we'd love to welcome you. Please contact the Secondary School Office with your details. DAY OF LETTERS
The Art Department in collaboration with the
French Department were very pleased to present to
our Year 7– Year 10 students Peter Moore, author
of ‘Days we Have Seen’ who shared his experiences
during Assembly on 7 February 2014.
This is a unique book on what happened in Cyprus
during the summer of 1974. It is an Englishman’s
personal account of his family’s experiences in war
-torn Cyprus during 1974 and 1975 illustrated with
historical photos.
As John Huddleston said: ‘This is not just another
account of the war in Cyprus in 1974. It is excep-
tional because it is written by an artist who is both
a detached outside observer and a passionate insid-
er who cares very much for the well-being of Cyp-
riots, Greeks and Turkish alike. The story is essen-
tially one of ordinary people, who are suddenly
caught up in the chaos, violence and passions of
war. As such it has a universal relevance going far
beyond the people of Cyprus’.
“DAYS WE HAVE SEEN” “DAYS WE HAVE SEEN” In 2006, Cyprus became a member of l’Organisation Interna-
tionale de la Francophonie (OIF) and as such has focused on
helping to spread the use of French language. Every year in
the month of March different events take place to celebrate la
Francophonie all over the island.
This year apart from our traditional Dinner of the Fran-
cophonie, the Heritage Private School and the Alliance Fran-
çaise have collaborated in organising a football match which
was held on Monday 24 March 2014. We have been honoured
by the presence of professional football players especially
from the Apollon Club and we would like to thank them for
their support. During this event we also raised funds for the
PASYKAF (The Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and
Friends).
The French Department takes this opportunity to thank all parents, guardians, students and staff for their support during these events.
Congratulations to Leonard Siebel Year 5 who has recently won two tennis tournaments. The latest being the 2nd Neumünster Junior-Indoor Open un-der the Dunlop Junior Series 2014 in the "Blue Hall" Neumünster, Germany. Leonard lost just one match during the last twelve matches and as the winner of the federation Christmas cup in Ber-lin he had his first interview with the German tennis journal.
TENNIS SUCCESS
As part of the school European programme (Comenius Multilateral Project 2012-2014) involving Spain, Italy, Turkey, England, Portugal and Romania Ms Konstantina, Ms Evy and Ms Elena travelled to Comiso, Sicily. We vis-ited Instituto Statale D’Arte and we were warmly wel-comed by the students and staff. The students sang three songs to greet us. Then we were taken on a tour around each Art Lab where students had prepared piec-es of artwork and unique presents for each country. The meeting with all the partners was very productive and we discussed about our common activities. We had a fantastic experience learning about the histo-ry of Comiso, Ragusa and Modica, three of the oldest towns of Sicily. We also enjoyed the Italian cuisine! Our school looks forward to welcoming all the partners involved in this two year European programme for the final meeting in Cyprus this May. Ms Evy Year 2 Class Teacher

Book Drive Success! The book drive held last month was a great success throughout the Primary and Early Years schools. All classes, even Nursery, took
part in collecting new and used books which were no longer needed at home to donate to the school’s ever growing Libraries. Classes
competed over the course of two weeks to collect as many books as they could! In the Primary school Ms Marianna Year 4 were the
winners, collecting over 200 books and in the Early Years, Ms Kylie’s Year 1 were the winners, collecting over 80 books for both of
the school’s libraries. Books which all the children can read and enjoy for years to come. Year 1K chose a wooden train set as their
prize for being avid collectors, whilst Year 4M chose classic English board games to add to their learning games collection.
We would like to say a BIG thank you to all the parents who kindly donated books and for your ever-lasting support in continuously
helping us to strive for excellence in education for our children.

Congratulations to Andri Achilleos who is now a CIE approved Biology Examiner. University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) are very committed to the ideas of quality in their procedures and justice for all their candidates. They still largely operate in developing countries, and they hope all examiners will find satisfaction in playing their part in rewarding deserving candidates worldwide with globally-recognised qualifications to assist in both their own and their countries' progress. This is a great achievement for Andri and also for the school as we are fortunate to have Andri as part of our experienced team in the Science Department.

During March, the Early Years and Primary School came together to hold a successful Maths Week. Children from all years enjoyed the opportunity to test their skills on a variety of problem solving activ-ities. They had the chance to present their work on the last day, and challenged the parents to participate in problem solving. Well done, and thank you to all that took part, helping to make it a memorable and successful week!
MATHS WEEK
During Maths Week, Year 4M planned a cake sale. There was lots of maths involved! We learned about grams and kilo-grams, time, fractions and much more! At the beginning of the week, we researched recipes and looked at profit and loss. Then we had to do some market research. We had to find out how much people would be willing to pay for our cakes. Af-ter that, we had lots of fun making lots of different cakes to sell at the cake sale. The taste testing was the best!
Emil Lugovoy 4M “I was so nervous on the day of the cake sale. Once we had started though, I got really excited! We made €216 in 10 minutes!”
Grace Hazeldine 4M
“Our cake sale was so much fun. It didn't take long to sell out. We had a lot of happy customers!”

Bon Appetite
Monday 24 March 2014 was an excellent day for French lovers. The
Heritage School held a French dinner in a beautiful place called
“Ousia Lounge Bar.” All the children who enjoy French gathered
with their parents in the bar at 7:45 p.m. Fifteen minutes later the
fun began.
French Food!
All guests were provided with food for their own taste such as: salm-
on, duck, burger and chicken nuggets. All this mouth-watering food
was cooked in the French tradition.
Also at the end the guests were provided with a sweet dessert such as:
Chocolate Volcano, or some sweet surprises of children’s choices.
I asked a Year 6 student called Konstantin, about the food he tried.
“When I arrived at the French Dinner, I was very excited. I had salm-
on covered in layers of crispy dough, and some potatoes aside. The
food turned out to be a miracle!”
The Restaurant Rocks!
The restaurant itself looked amazing. It had loads of tables, sofas, and
of course chairs. The restaurant had TV’s and like any normal res-
taurant it had a strong connection with wifi. It was secured by a pass-
word which you could get from the manager of the place. “The
French dinner was a complete success!” exclaimed Kote.

On 8 December 2013, the Heritage Private School held a Christmas Fete.
The Christmas fete was a place to have fun! There were lots of stalls, fun games, etc. One of the most popular games was wet the teacher! It was when
you could throw a wet sponge at a teacher. “I thought that throwing a sponge at Mr Butcher was great fun!” said Yuli. There were lots of different stalls. There was cupcake decorating, jewellery, book stands and more. You could even talk to Santa!!(Which was great fun,
even I had fun!!!).
The Choir sang beautiful songs and the school band were good. “A superb job! I think they put a lot of effort into it”, said Yuil.
There was also a lottery but sadly only one person could win the prize. That meant that some people had to go home empty handed!.
All in all it was a great day and everyone who went loved it (as I did!).

Fear Or Speak On Thursday 20 March 2014, 12 students from Year 6 stood up and defeated their fears, after joining a one term course of Public Speaking. The students prepared their speeches, followed by an inter-student battle, of who will go to the next competition. “I was preparing my speech a really long time and I didn’t really want to go to school because of the fear of speech,” said Year 6A student Nick. For the students the day started normally, the com-petition was going to be held in the Early Years Hall. The students were really nervous. “I was nervous and fright-ened,” said student participant Alexander Legovski. The students that were watching felt proud of their fellow class-mates. “I felt really proud of the participants and I wished all of them good luck,” commented Konstantin Merabishvili from 6A. The participants sat down and just waited. Then one by one each participant read their speech and the judges waited patiently. “When I was speaking I felt nervous and very different from when I am in the audience. After my speech everyone was com-menting on it,” said participant Elvin. After 2 minutes of total nervousness the judges decided that all the participants would go through. There was a big HOORAY!!!! From everyone! “I wish good luck to everyone!” said Konstantin. Two weeks later the competition took place at Highgate School. We were very proud of everyone Anas and Janhavi were in the top six speakers, Louisa and Nikita got a certificate for an out-standing speech and I got a certificate for improvement.

French Dinner Bon Apetite!
On Monday 24 March 2014 the Heritage School hosted a French
Dinner in ‘Ousia Lounge Bar’. The people gathered there at
19:55 and the dinner itself started at 20:00.
The Restaurant.
‘Ousia Lounge Bar’ was a fantastic place. The dimmed lights
hanging from the ceiling created a nice atmosphere. Everyone
was excited. The chairs were cosy, the design was classical and
everyone enjoyed it.
The Food!
The food was delicious! We asked a Year 6 student (Nikita) and
he said ‘When I came to the restaurant I was really hungry, in
25 minutes time, the food arrived. I had a duck fillet covered in
sweet sauce with some potatoes aside. I loved it, it was very juicy
and chewy and the potatoes were just a great success.
Overall.
Overall I think everyone liked the food and the area and proba-
bly everyone left happily but one student (Elvin) said ‘The food
was not really French like the hamburgers and chicken nuggets
but everything else was great’.

Maths Is Everywhere On Friday 14 March 2014 was Maths Day at the Heritage Primary School. Every class did something completely different. Rafaella Mehmet from Year 6A
said that she loved those amazingly good and fun tricks with cards that Year 6W did. They were doing magic tricks with cards, and as magicians, they
did not explain how they did them. One of the activities from Year 6A was selling drinks, relaxing and cheap drinks, the money they earned from
them, went to buy things for the Maths cupboard.
Nikita Nastachenko, from Year 2F, happily said that he liked everything, but the most of all, he loved helping people find how many different pat-
terns we can do with fifteen egg packets and two eggs in each box.
Everyone had an amazing, cool and an unforgettable time! Students dressed up as shapes, playing cubes, all covered with numbers and many other cos-
tumes!
Eva Khalilova is a fantastic artist, and she is looking forward to our Art Week next term.

5th Comenius Project meeting to Portugal
What an honour it was to represent the Heritage School on the 5th Project meeting! This meeting
required the partners to present a Traditional game to the children of Vila do Bispo Primary
School. All partners put in a lot of effort to make these presentations succesful and the most
important: the children thoroughly enjoyed it. Performances by the Kindergarden and Primary
schools were fantastic. The Portuguese hospitality was phenomenal and the pragram of events
were very well balanced. The beauty and culture of this country will be a memory that will stay
with us forever. We look forward to meeting with the Comenius partners in Cyprus.
Ms Elena and Ms Fotoula
Inspired by the book, ‘Rebecca’s World’, Year 4 has been transported to an imaginary world to produce their own chapter
books. Lost in their own thoughts and ideas, they conjured up weird and wonderful characters: ‘Burpy’, the ‘Tongue Twister
Monster‘, ‘Griffindor’, ‘Headbanger’ and ‘Ramadina’, to name but a few. They also developed triggers, set themselves tasks,
climbed over obstacles and solved riddles to complete their fantasy quests.
Reflecting on their finished books they had this to say...
‘I am very proud of my Fantasy Quest because I learned how to write in paragraphs and end in different ways. My story
ended with ‘Off we go again’ ending. That means the characters set off on another adventure.’
Stavros (4Jo)
‘We all got very excited when our teacher told us that we were going to make our own book! It took us nearly 4 weeks to
make our books but finally they were published.’
Lucy (4M)
‘We have all worked very hard to make our Fantasy Quest books and I am proud of how mine came out.’
Alex (4Ja)
‘I have learned how to edit my writing
using V.C.O.P. I’ve also learned alterna-
tive endings – I used a ‘sequel’ ending. I
feel like a real author now.’ Andreas
‘When we finished all of our Fantasy Quests
we read everybody else’s and made the
classroom like a library. Me and my friends
read very interesting books. Making the Fan-
tasy Quest was really fun.’ Lewis (4M)
‘I’m proud of my story and all the charac-
ters I did. I like it a lot.’
Alexandros (4Ja)
We would like to take this opportunity to wish students, staff,
family and friends a very Happy Easter.
Students return to school on Monday 27 April 2014.
