2014 Global Foodways Fellowship Award

This year, TMY offered the first ever “Global Foodways Fellowship” Award for a new food vendor who has never sold food at the festival before. Heritage-based or ethnic single cooks or families were eligible to apply.

This years’s Fellowship winners are Lila Sideras and Evaristo Ramirez Barajas—a husband and wife team, residents of Tucson, with two young children. They both come from families of cooks. Their cooking has focused on the rich culinary traditions of Evaristo’s homeland of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Over the span of more than 20 trips to Guadalajara, they have done research, conducted oral history interviews, and participated in market shopping and cooking with family members. In their Tucson home, they keep hens and grow a garden. The food menu they are offering is tied to the regional specialties of Guadalajara.

2014 Featured Performers2014 Partnerships We are trying something new this year. In order to expand our investment in artists and education, this year our Music Director invited 6 groups to stage select

performances. Each year we will rotate with 6 different featured acts. With this year’s presentations we acknowledge the diverse influences and traditions that co-exist in our region.

Direct from Wroclaw, Poland, we welcome Jedliniok – Polish Student Folk Group. Presented by our local group Lajkonik. A total of 32 dancers from Poland and USA gracing the stage.

Polish Fiesta

Local company Xanadu presents guest artists Hele-na Vlahos, Greek dancer and Gamal Gomaa, Egyptian vocalist and tabla player in workshop format. Local dancer and UA scholar of Middle Eastern traditional arts Danielle Van Dobben will offer commentary.

Mideastern Traditional Dance & Music

Nine bands over three days, featuring dance couples directly from the Tohono O’odham Nation. MC Andrea Ramon will offer educational commentary.

Waila and Tohono O’odham Culture Showcase

Old Time MusicOld-Time Music and Bluegrass are separate but related styles with strong roots in the Southern Appalachians. TMY festival founder Jim Griffith will serve as MC. Performances by The Crucial County Band, The Pick and Holler Band, Old Time Fiddle Styles by Robert Dutton, Jacqui Wohl and Darwin Long and The Greg Morton Band.

Global CarnivalThe thunderous sounds and sights of different world pageantry traditions. Featuring Trinidad & Tobago (Sticky Fingers and Sonny Salina), Japan (Odaiko Sonora), Brazil (Axe Capoeria and Sol Axe), Mexico and Latin America (Viva Arizona) and West African “moko jumbie” stilt acrobatics (Flam Chem).

Internationally-acclaimed Native American guitarist Gabriel Ayala brings his Quintet for a special showcase of a genre he calls: JazzMenco. This style fuses the improvisational and chordal structure of Jazz with the driving rhythmic force of Flamenco.

It has been the tradition at TMY that the last word spoken and heard at the festival be in the O’odham language. According to O’odham creation stories, this is where they came to when they were led out of the Underworld; many older O’odham believe that they were made by the Creator out of the specific soil of this place. The rear guard is a place of danger, but also of honor: it represents the defense against attacks; the possibility of surviving and carrying on tradition. In that spirit, at 6pm on Sunday, we’ll say: “It is done!”
