Gardner-Webb University

Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equiva-lent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private insti-tution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experi-ence for a higher quality student.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his eighth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006.

Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family for more than 25 years. Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1987. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1.

Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), serving on 31 accreditation committees, including 22 as committee chair. He has also chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees.

Bonner currently serves on the Board of the SACS Commission on Colleges; he is Vice President of the Big South Conference, Vice Chair/Chair Elect of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a previous Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations.

He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott.

After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift.

In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher.

They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have several grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 16th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year in athletics admin-istration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addi-tion to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facil-ities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last five academic years.

This past year, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well.

Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 54, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a 2009 graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a recent graduate of Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy, a freshman soccer player at High Point University.

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic train-ers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAATE, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training stu-dents must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

The winningest coach in Gardner-Webb softball history, head coach Tom Cole begins his 14th season at the helm of the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2013-14.

Cole came to Gardner-Webb in 2000-01 and produced immediate results, overseeing GWU’s transition to the NCAA Division I level and directing the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a school-record 36 wins in just his second year in Boiling Springs, N.C.

In 19 years as a collegiate head coach, Cole has amassed 415 career wins, including 286 wins during his time at Gardner-Webb, which makes him the only coach in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ softball history with over 200 wins. He picked up his 300th career victory with a 6-0 win over Presbyterian on March 18, 2008 and his 400th in a 4-2 win over Campbell on May 10, 2012.

Since Gardner-Webb officially joined a conference in 2002-03, Coach Cole has mentored 26 All-Conference players, including four All-Freshman Team selections and 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year in Samantha Meenaghan.

In fact, since the Runnin’ Bulldogs joined the Big South in 2009, Coach Cole has had at least two players or more named to the Big South All-Conference Teams in each season.

Cole has also seen three players in Samantha Meenaghan (2012), Amanda Gomes (2012) and Christa Fullwood (2010) named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Teams, 11 players earn NCCSIA All-State honors and four players receive College Sports Madness Big South All-Conference recognition, including both Meenaghan and Morgan Baker who each earned that feat twice during their time at GWU.

He also coached three NCAA Division I All-Independent selections, two National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) All-Americans and five NCCAA All-Region honors during his stint at GWU.

In 2010, Fullwood was also named as a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist, a first in GWU’s history.

He has had 12 players receive postseason conference All-Tournament honors and has had a student-athlete tabbed as either the Conference Player of the Week or the Conference Pitcher of the Week on 19 different occasions in the Atlantic Sun and the Big South since the 2003 season.

In 2013, Meenaghan was ranked in the top-30 in the nation in hitting with her .427 batting average on the season, while Kellie Beres was second in the nation among all NCAA Division I softball programs with an average of 0.41 sacrifice bunts per game.

In 2009, Gardner-Webb's Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the season, she was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year, ranked 23rd in the country in on-base percentage at .519 and 48th nationally in slugging percentage at .719.

In 2007, Melody Harrell finished the season ranked ninth in the NCAA with 1.09 RBIs per game after amassing 51 in just 47 games, while Abbie Looper, after blasting one final triple in her career in the second round of the A-Sun Tournament, ended her season 14th nationally in triples per game (0.10).

His 2007 squad also posted a 23.5 game improvement in the wins and losses category, which ranked as the eight-best turnaround in all of Division I history,

Cole, who’s 2007 finished as the Atlantic Sun Runner-Ups after sweeping through the Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament to reach the Championship game, has guided the Runnin’ Bulldogs to within one game of the Big South Softball Championship game in two of the last three seasons.

Cole also took his 2002 team to the National Christian College Athletics Association Tournament Championship game, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs took second-place overall. For his efforts, Cole was named the NCAA Division I Independent Coach of the Year in 2002.

The 2004 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year has recorded six 20-plus win seasons during his time at GWU, including a program best 36 wins in 2002, 35 wins in 2007 and 30 wins in 2004.

Off the field, Cole's teams have been extremely successful, as on three separate occasions, he has had the program rated in the top-20 academically by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), including the 2008 team which finished with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs, the 2007 squad which ranked fourth nationally (3.493) and the 2006 squad (3.430) which ranked seventh in the nation.

While all 14 of his GWU teams have been tabbed as NFCA All-Academic Teams since his arrival at Gardner-Webb, he has had three players earn CoSida/ESPN The Magazine All-Academic All-District honors in Joanna Ward (2007), Jessi Williams (2006) and Rachael Riopel (2004). Riopel, who received CoSida/ESPN The Magazine All-Academic American Third-Team recognition in both 2004 and 2005. Riopel was also named to the Verizon Academic All-District II Second-Team in 2003, while Stephanie Shrum earned a spot on the Verizon Academic All-District II First-Team.

Cole has also had two players in Savannah Burns and Jane Savage each receive the highest academic honor for a softball player in the Big South Conference, as each was named as the Big South Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Burns received the award in 2013, following Savage who earned the award in 2012. Savage was also one of only four recipients of the Big South Conference’s George A. Christenberry Award in 2012, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among all the student-athletes in the Big South.

From the time when Gardner-Webb joined the Big South in 2008-09 until now, Cole has had five players earn a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team, one each season, and 70 student-athletes named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

Prior to the 2009 season, GWU had 67 players named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Teams from 2003-08.

He has had over 83 players earn NFCA Scholar-Athlete recognition during his time at GWU, while Carla Poskas won the 2002 NCCAA Scholar-Athlete Award in 2002 and Beverly Proffitt was the President’s Senior Athletic Achievement Award winner in 2001.

Coach Cole’s 2013, 2011 and 2010 Teams were also awarded with the Big South Conference Team Sportsmanship Awards for softball.

In the summer of 2007, Cole took over the reigns of the Michigan Ice professional softball team for the final three series of the season. While with the Ice, he was able to coach his former student-athlete, former assistant coach, and current Wingate Softball head coach Lani Shaffer, who was playing her second season with the team.

Prior to coming to GWU, Cole was the head coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. There, the Jamison, Pa., native inherited a program that had to forfeit the last two games of its previous season due to a lack of players. Cole wasted little time in turning around the struggling program and during his five seasons there, became the winningest coach in the history of the program. In 1997, Cole was named the CCIW Coach of the Year and the NFCA Division III Midwest Regional Co-Coach of the Year.

Before his tenure as Elmhurst, Cole spent two years as an assistant at Kutztown (Pa.) University with the softball and women's basketball teams. From 1988-92 he was the head softball coach, head women's basketball coach and a physical education instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Cole also served a five-year stint as athletics director and head coach for softball, girl's basketball, and volleyball at Orlando Christian (Fla.) High School.

Cole earned a bachelor's degree in recreation and parks administration from North Carolina State University in 1977. Cole then went on to get his master's degree from Florida International University in 1989.

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie (Reichert) Smith returned to Boiling Springs, N.C. as an assistant coach on Tom Cole’s staff in August 2007 and is now in her seventh year as the pitching coach for the Runnin’ Bulldog softball team in 2013-14.

Along with her duties as the pitching coach, Smith also helps with day-to-day operations, travel, practices and recruiting.

During her time at Gardner-Webb, Smith has guided a handful of pitchers to All-State, All-Conference and All-Tournament honorees, while also helping them to set new GWU Division I pitching feats.

Smith saw five-year hurler Cindy Boomhower battle through a back injury to earn Big South All-Conference honors twice (2012 & 2010), while also picking up NCCSIA All-State recognition in 2012. Boomhower was also named to the Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team in both 2012 and 2011, while fellow Runnin’ Bulldog pitcher Christine Murray was named to the 2009 Big South All-Tournament Team.

Since 2009, GWU’s first year in the Big South Conference, the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had pitchers earn Big South Pitcher of the Week honors on eight different occasions and at least once in each season.

Under Smith’s tutelage, pitchers Boomhower (36 wins), Taryn Beck (35 wins) and Murray (31 wins) have climbed into the top-five in GWU’s Division I career record books in wins, while the trio, along with Jessica Childers, are also in the top-five in complete games.

Murray (471), Beck (413), Boomhower (372) and Childers (258) all are in the top-five in GWU’s DI history in career strikeouts, behind the career leader in strikeouts Reichert (Smith) with 538, while both Murray (7.47) and Beck (6.04) are in the top-two in strikeouts per 7.0 innings pitched in GWU’s DI career record books.

The threesome of Beck (14), Boomhower (8) and Murray (8) are also in the top-three in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ DI career record books in shutouts.

In 2012, Boomhower’s 13 victories put her in a tie for third overall for the most wins in a single season in GWU’s Division I history, while her team-high four saves tied her with Beck, who also had four saves under Smith’s guidance in 2008, for the most saves by a pitcher in a single season in GWU’s DI record books.

Former Gardner-Webb softball standout Christa Fullwood returned to her alma mater as the assistant coach, joining head coach Tom Cole’s staff in the fall of 2013.

Fullwood will be working primarily with the hitters and the infield, as well as will help in every day operations such as practices, conditioning and recruiting.

Fullwood, who was a two-time Big South All-Conference Team selection (2009 & 2010) at GWU, returns to her alma mater after spending the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Frostburg State University.

In her two years on staff at Frostburg State, the Bobcats won 56 games overall and made back-to-back CAC Championship game appearances. Last season in 2013, the Bobcats rolled to the ECAC South Tournament Title, as Fullwood helped to tutor four NFCA All-Region selections, one NFCA All-American, two ECAC First-Team All-Stars and one Capital One Academic All-American.

Fullwood was a standout student-athlete at Gardner-Webb from 2007-10, as she re-wrote the softball career record books and took home numerous honors. She finished her three-year career at GWU ranked first in career batting average (.380) and fielding percentage (.922), second in RBIs (107) and doubles (31), and third in home runs (20).

The lefty also holds single-records in batting average (.460 in 2009), total bases (106 in 2010), slugging percentage (.719 in 2009) and walks (27 in 2010).

Fullwood was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second-Team, the Big South All-Tournament Team and was a Lowes Senior CLASS Award Finalist her senior season.

She was also named to both the Big South All-Tournament Team and the NCCSIA Softball University Division All-State Team twice (2009 & 2010), was a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete (2008, 2009 & 2010), a two-time Big South All-Academic Team member (2009 & 2010), a two-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member (2009 & 2010) and a 2008 Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team member.

Fullwood, who was a two-time GWU Offensive MVP (2009 & 2010), was ranked in the top-10 nationally and in the Big South with a .460 batting average her junior season in 2009 and was also named the GWU Female Athlete of the Year.

Prior to transferring to Gardner-Webb in 2007-08, Fullwood played both basketball and softball at Mars Hill College as a freshman in 2006-07. At Mars Hill, Fullwood was a Dean’s List student both semesters and was named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Fullwood graduated from Gardner-Webb in May of 2010 with a double major in Psychology and Sociology, finishing with a cumulative 3.69 GPA.

She recently just completed her Master’s degree in Business Administration at Frostburg State.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 16 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s soccer for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, begins play this season with eight members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 29-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007).

In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last eight years -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

This past season, the Big South had a record 41 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 10 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also won its first football playoff game (Stony Brook), had the national women’s basketball Rookie Coach of the Year, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade (Coastal Carolina, Liberty), and had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference in 2011-12. In addition, Liberty was the first men’s golf team in Conference history to win an NCAA Regional, and the Flames went on to finish 10th at the national event.

Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won six PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.
