Clean Up CRManaging the trash at events is a mammoth task and several volunteer teams will help again this year to Clean Up CR. The Festival’s Clean Up CR program, sponsored by Cargill, diverts a substantial amount of garbage from landfills and focuses on promoting recycling at our events.
Win–Win–Win Volunteer ProgramSponsored by Toyota Financial, this award winning program helps Freedom Festival recruit needed volunteers and, in return, thousands of dollars are donated to the volunteers’ charity of choice. It’s a win-win-win!
Safety First! The behind the scene logistics of putting on a festival are complicated and costly. Managing street closures, directional signage, safety, medical personnel, building security, and disaster plans are key to a successful and safe event. Freedom Festival is grateful for the sponsorship of MidAmerican Energy and ITC Midwest to underwrite this critical part of the festival.
Ride the city bus for freeA partnership between Freedom Festival and CR Transit makes it possible for the Freedom Festival button wearers to ride the bus free during the festival. So, grab your neighbor and some friends and ride the city bus to the events.

I enjoy the pancake breakfast early morning on the 4th of July.
Kristy Staker Cedar Rapids and Marion Hy-Vee
It’s tough to pick just one, but I’m a fan of the 4th. I love the atmosphere downtown and of course, the fireworks!
Jonathan Cormier Toyota Financial Services
If I had to pick a favorite event, it would be the Balloon Glow because its a great scene with families sitting on the front lawn of Historic Brucemore, listening to live music as the balloons fill up and light up the night sky!
Josh StreetsUS Cellular
Our family enjoys the kid friendly activities like Imagination Square spending time having fun with family/friends.
Jody DonaldsonKirkwood Community College
My favorite Freedom Festival event is the fireworks. It is the grand finale, the best ending after two weeks of fabulous activities. I love the energy it brings to downtown, the array of people that come and the firework show itself is always spectacular.
Stephanie a. EdsonGE CapitalIt is very hard to choose one, so listed are a few of my favorites. The Balloon Glow, Freedom Parade, downtown on the 4th of July, and Tribute to Heroes. The entire festival is very impressive. It is wonderful to see all the people enjoy the events and how we come together as a community.
Lisa McMillen-Bose Prairie Ridge Estates
Tribute to Heroes Dinner — there are so many unsung heroes in the community working hard but don’t always get the credit and recognition. Their stories are always inspirational and heartwarming.
Lori arbuckleSam’s Club
I love the DockDogs event. I helped to get Sam’s Club to sponsor the first year in 2012. I work with rescues and shelters to foster dogs to get them a forever home and have a love for dogs.
Mark HixsonBusiness Solutions Group, Inc.
4th of July Celebration, what an awesome opportunity to bring the community together in a family friendly atmosphere while celebrating the freedom to do so!
Erika EllesCargill, Inc.
I cannot pick a favorite event — I LOVE THEM ALL!
Jessica fergesen Cedar Rapids Kernels
My favorite event is Movie Night at the Ballpark. It is great to see families enjoying a movie at Veterans Memorial Stadium under the night sky!
Robyn Rieckhoff Freedom Festival, Executive Director
As a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, I take pride in our community and am delighted we can bring families together at this series of great events — The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival. Enjoy!
Liz NeffFreedom Festival, Events and Marketing Director
It is gratifying to observe how the festival has developed into a community tradition. Our nonprofit corporation provides the opportunity for residents, businesses, and public organizations to unite and celebrate our nation’s birthday.

The Celebration of Freedom. I love the sense of community as thousands gather together to celebrate July 4th with fellowship, music, and fireworks.
ann Virden Merrill Lynch
My favorite Freedom Festival event is Balloon Glow. I love seeing the colorful balloons lit up on historic Brucemore lawn. It’s great to see thousands of people come out for the event and enjoy what Cedar Rapids has to offer.
Clinton BradyNorthwestern Mutual
I really enjoy the fireworks on the 4th…. It is a great atmosphere downtown with the music and all the people.
Laurel Day Cedar Rapids Community School District
My favorite event is Balloon Glow because it’s a time where families come together for good old fashion fun, a picnic on the grounds of beautiful Brucemore, great music, and the sound/color of the balloons as they light up the neighborhood!
Sarika BhaktaCedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance
Favorite Freedom Festival event is a tie between the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks and the exciting Balloon Glow.
Heather WilsonThe Eastern Iowa Airport
My favorite Freedom Festival event is the parade. I remember growing up in a smaller town that had HUGE parades. It was such a wonderful part of my childhood that I love continuing that tradition in Cedar Rapids. I love looking at the kid’s faces along the street light up. Parades truly create a sense of community in an immensely positive and tangible way.

Balloon Glow. It is very cool to see 15,000 people listening to music, touring Brucemore, and generally having a great time.
Jason PaskerFarmers State Bank
The Balloon Glow is my favorite event because we have attended this event every year since our first child (Ava) was born. We really enjoy the live music and the atmosphere that comes with that!

Freedom to Build — Lego Extravaganza: This event provides a great opportunity for kids to showcase their creative side and help cultivate team work and communication skills as they work to complete the challenge in a group. What a great event to engage the Eastern Iowa community through this safe and fun learning experience for kids and parents.
