Welcome!to!picturesque!Charleston,!SC!and!the!unique!campus!setting!of!The!Citadel.!!We!

are!pleased!to!host!the!2014!ASCE!Carolinas!Conference!and!demonstrate!what!our!

Chapter!can!accomplish!in!organizing!this!great!tradition!of!competition!and!collegiality!!

Our!goal!in!planning!this!year’s!conference!has!been!to!host!a!civil!engineering!student!

conference!and!academic!competitions!in!a!collegial!spirit!that!fosters!a!lively!forum!of!

student!participants,!faculty!advisors,!competition!judges,!dignitaries,!and!guests,!reflective!

of!the!high!professional!and!ethical!standards!of!the!civil!engineering!profession.!

We!believe!the!eleven!competition!events!will!challenge!your!engineering!knowledge,!

technical!abilities,!and!teamwork!skills.!!Social!activities!include!a!funPfilled!evening!of!

bowling,!traditional!tug!of!war!contests,!and!conference!awards!banquet.!!We!encourage!all!

conference!participants!to!proactively!meet!and!network!with!students!from!other!schools.!!

Bulldog!cheers!on!football!Fridays.!!Freshman!students!dine!under!the!watchful!eye!of!the!

Mess!Carver!at!each!table!who!is!the!Officer!in!Charge!or!an!upperclassman.!!The!Citadel!

Mess!Hall!serves!over!2,200!students!and!plays!an!essential!role!in!Cadet!fellowship!

including!daily!announcements!of!campus!events,!activities,!birthdays,!etc.!!

Keynote$Address,$Ms.$Linda$Figg!has!a!number!of!titles!including!president,!chief!executive!officer,!and!

director!of!bridge!art!of!FIGG!Engineering!Group,!but!the!one!

that!probably!fits!best!is!director!of!lasting!impressions!

bestowed!on!her!by!Roads!&!Bridges!magazine!in!an!article!

about!the!Broadway!Bridge!in!Daytona,!Fla.!This!unusual!title!

results!from!her!pioneering!creation:!the!FIGG!Bridge!Design!

Charette,!a!unique!local!consensus!program!that!fosters!input!

from!community!members!on!design!elements!for!bridge!

projects.!!FIGG!Engineering!has!garnered!numerous!design!awards!for!its!bridges,!297!so!

far,!and!has!designed!bridges!in!38!states!totaling!$10!billion!in!construction.!

Linda!Figg!serves!on!numerous!boards!and!executive!committees,!has!produced!an!awardP

winning,!educational!DVD!to!promote!engineering!among!youngsters,!authored!a!book!

chapter,!and!spoken!widely!on!bridge!aesthetics.!Additionally,!Ms.!Figg!has!published!

“Bridging!the!Mississippi:!The!New!IP35W!Bridge,”!that!raises!funds!for!two!Minneapolis!

nonPprofit!educational!organizations,!and!!honors!the!memory!of!a!tragic!event.!

FIGG!Engineering!Group!was!founded!in!1978!by!Eugene!Figg,!a!1958!civil!engineering!

graduate!of!The!Citadel.!!Taking!over!from!her!father!in!2002,!Linda!Figg!has!continued!the!

tradition!of!building!sustainable,!worldPclass!bridges!that!are!cost!effective!and!sensitive!to!

the!environment!yet!continue!to!set!new!industry!standards!in!design,!technology,!

materials!and!efficiency.!The!industry!recognized!these!accomplishments!by!featuring!
