Pelicans Community Fund

MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of the Myrtle Beach PelicansCommunity Fund is to make the GrandStrand community a better place to live,work and play. Through our fundraisingefforts, donations, community givebacks,volunteer time and in-kind services we’recommitted to using the power of sports tocreate positive change.

IMPACT STATEMENT We take our commitment to the GrandStrand very seriously and will make thatcommitment a focal point of every season.In 2013 the Pelicans created the PelicansCommunity Fund in an effort to raise anannual goal of over $250,000. That goal waswell surpassed as the final total was$397,187. The commitment to thecommunity continued in 2014 with a goal toraise more for the Myrtle Beach communitythan we did in 2013.

Bruce Dal Canton Awards: As part of the Pelicans Community Fund the Pelicans give two awards in honor of former Pelicans pitching coach, Bruce Dal Canton. Dal Canton was with the Pelicans from 1999-2008. Before joining the Pelicans, Dal Canton played professional baseball for the Pirates, Royals, Braves and White Sox organizations. Dal Canton tragically passed away in 2008 due to esophageal cancer. Dal Canton is remembered as a teacher of the game and a true gentleman of baseball. To honor Dal Canton, the Pelicans established the Bruce Dal Canton Scholarship Fund and the Bruce Dal Canton Community Service Award. The scholarship is awarded to students graduating from the Horry County Early College High School program and the Service Award is reserved for a current Pelicans player who demonstrates the most dedication to service in Horry County.

Back Pack Buddies MondayFor the second year in a row, the Pelicanspartnered with HTC and the Backpack Buddiesprogram to provide food, clothing and schoolsupplies to children with limited resources .For each Monday home game, the Pelicansoffered half-priced admission to guests thatdonated an item on the Back Pack Buddiesdonation list. This season Pelicans fansdonated $7,800 in goods.

Miller-Motte School Supply DriveA new element for the 2014 season was theMiller-Motte Technical College School SupplyDrive. Fans were asked to bring in schoolsupplies for Back Pack Buddies, in exchangefans would receive a poster courtesy of Miller-Motte. Five nights were held throughout theseason.

Special Olympics NightQuickly becoming one of the mostmemorable nights at the ballpark,Special Olympics Night allows for thelocal athletes to feel like stars.The night includes:

This year the Pelicans were able tohelp raise over $13,000 for HorryCounty Special Olympics.

Firefighter Appreciation NightDuring the week of the South Carolina’sAnnual Firefighters Convention, thePelicans held a Firefighter’s AppreciationNight. The night paid homage to all theservices provided by these Amaz-Wingindividuals. Our players wore specialtyjersey’s that were auctioned off to benefitthe SC Firefighters Association. The 50/50raffle proceeds for the evening alsobenefited the charity.

Paint the Park Purple

Paint the Park Purple was a night dedicated to raising awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. Events included a large ticket fundraiser, specialty purple jerseys, silent auction items, walk registrations, 50/50 raffle and a special tribute to the sponsors who supported the cause. Paint the Park Purple raised over $4,000 for the Alzheimer's Association.

Teacher Appreciation NightsThanks to a partnership with Sparks Toyota, thePelicans were able to host Teacher AppreciationNights. As part of Teacher Appreciation Nights,all Horry County School teachers,administrators and staff received a voucher fortwo free tickets to a Pelicans game.

Strike Out Stroke NightAs part of an awareness campaign, Grand Strand Medical helpedpresent Strike Out Stroke Night. Stroke awareness t-shirts wereprovided to the first 300 fans and Splash was part of a pre-gameceremony showing the signs of a stroke.

Little Wayne:On June 7th the Pelicans signed 10-year old Wayne Rabon toa one day player’s contract helping to fulfill his life-longdream of becoming a professional baseball player. LittleWayne, as he is affectionately known, had been diagnosedwith terminal cancer and was visiting the Myrtle Beach areaon vacation with his family.His day included a press conference, a whiffle ball home runderby with Pelicans players and more. In an interview hismother stated, "It's just so amazing that people are willingto do all this for him just to make his wish come true." Theday concluded with fans, Wayne and the entire Pelicansteam celebrating their First Half Championship at homeplate.

Fierce Fallon + Coaches vs Cancer:The reason behind Vice President & GeneralManager Andy Milovich's in-game prostate examon July 24 came full circle on Saturday, August 2ndwith Coaches vs. Cancer Night. Milovich agreedto the exam if the team could raise Fierce Fallon'sFacebook Page to 10,000 'Likes'. Saturday nightacted as a fundraiser for Fierce Fallon andfeatured a mini-football giveaway, a silent auction,a 50/50 raffle and more with all proceedsbenefiting Fallon. All-in-all the night raised over$6,500. The highlight of the night however, camebefore the anthem was even sung.Fallon made her grand entrance to the ballparkwith family and friends in the back of a pick-uptruck as her favorite song, Katy Perry's Roar,boomed throughout the stadium. Once arrivingto the home dugout she made her way to thepitcher's mound for a ceremonial first pitch.Moments later, after player introductions, Pelicansstarter Chad Bell took his place on the mound andprepared to face the first hitter of the night, FierceFallon. One pitch from Bell was all it took as herbaseball debut went down in the books as a solohome run and one of the most memorableknocks at TicketReturn.Com Field. She took hervictory lap around the bases to a standing ovationand roaring crowd.Over $6,500 Raised for Fierce Fallon

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

As the ALS Ice Water Challenge swept thenation, the Pelicans joined the fight butwanted a challenge that would stand out.The entire team signed buckets and putthemselves up for auction to get thebuckets dumped on them. Fans bid for theright to dump the buckets on to the team.In the end, nearly $1,000 was raised forALS.Seven of our staff members also tookindividual challenges and madecontributions to ALS. Robotics Night

Robotics Night, presented by the Grand Strand Technology Council,is an evening where Horry County students have the opportunityto display the robots they built. Most schools in Horry Countyhave a robotics program where students build robots that are ableto complete challenges during competitions. The game nightallows the students to be showcased in a unique setting. The nightis about building awareness for these programs. The highlight ofthe evening was Robo Splash. Robo Splash has the ability to hurla 70 mph fast ball. The last two seasons, Robo Splash has kickedoff the evening by throwing out the first pitch.

ARS Rescue Rooter Food Drive

During the 2014 season both the Boy Scoutsand the Girl Scouts were invited to the ballparkfor a sleep over. The night included an on-fieldparade, baseball and an on-field sleepover.Over forty scout groups joined us for the scoutsleepovers.

Scout Sleepovers

A food drive was held on Aug. 1st where fanswere asked to bring in two canned food items inexchange for a voucher good for a hot dog, bagof chips and a soda. The food was donated tothe Low Country Food bank.

Memorial Day Coloring ContestHeld in conjunction with the Sun News, the Memorial Day Coloring Contest was open to all children 12 and under. The winners received the opportunity to throw out a first pitch at a Pelicans game and four free tickets. All entries received a free ticket. There were over 100 entries for the art contest.

Military Support

Military support has been animportant cause to the Pelicans butwas made a main focal point thisseason. This season, the Pelicanspartnered with Embrace Hospice tohighlight that support to all militarymembers.

Embrace Veterans SaturdaysEvery Saturday this season the Pelicanshonored local World War II heroes during apre-game ceremony. The veterans story wasshowcased during a pre-game interview, theywere honored with a first pitch and treated toa night in a luxury suite, thanks to EmbraceHospice. Over 30 veterans were honoredduring games this season.

Embrace a Veteran Half Inning PromotionThis season the Pelicans dedicated a half inning of every game tohonoring military veterans as well. During the inning break, allcurrent and former military members were asked to stand andbe recognized. Those around them were asked to give thanksand embrace them for their service. It was concluded with ouron-field host interviewing one of the military service membersin attendance.

Military Appreciation NightFriday June 6th

The Pelicans 2014 Military Appreciation Night was an extra special evening this year because it was held onthe 70th Anniversary of D-Day. As part of our appreciation, the Pelicans gave away a military card set thatfeatured local heroes specifically highlighting WWII veterans. The card set was given away to the first 500fans in attendance and featured former and current military service members. Fans had the opportunity tosubmit their friends and family as part of the set. A majority of those veterans featured in the card set werepart of the Pelicans pre-game ceremony that evening.

Strike Out Cancer SeriesThe series featured one night eachmonth, April through August, andhighlighted five different forms ofcancer (esophageal, skin, testicular,prostate and breast). On eachnight the team dawned specialjerseys which were up for auctionall season. The American CancerSociety and the Mary KayFoundation both received a portionfrom the Cancer Series Jersey.

Spit Seeds Not Tobacco

The Pelicans first Strike Out Cancer night was inhonor of Bruce Dal Canton, a former pitchingcoach who passed away of esophageal cancer.The theme was Spit seeds, Not Tobacco.Through out the night we played up the themeby awarding contest winners with watermelonsand included a seed spitting competition. Thiswas also the first night that the cancer jerseyswere worn by the team.

Skin Cancer Awareness Night On skin cancer awareness night the Pelicans gaveaway chair umbrellas and sunscreen to the first1,000 fans. Additionally, throughout the eveningfans were asked to answer trivia questions aboutcancer related statistics. The American CancerSociety was also on site to provide educationabout skin cancer.

Men’s Health Awareness Night

The team continued their Strike OutCancer campaign in June with a focus onMen’s Health. The first 1,000 menreceived a free key chain as they enteredthe game and local health organizationswere on-site providing relatedinformation and tips for living a healthylife. The team also pledged to donate$500 to the American Cancer Society forevery home run hit by a Pelicans player inthat game against the Frederick Keys.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Night The team's Strike Out Cancer efforts on July 24th featured a ProstateExam Reminder Giveaway (a.k.a. a foam finger with a blue reminderribbon) to the first 1,000 men 18 and older. Ed Randallʹs Bat for a Curewas also on hand auctioning off a team signed bat and providingpotentially lifesaving information. However, the most memorableevent of the night was the in-game prostate exam given to ourGeneral Manager, Andy Milovich during the 7th inning.Milovich accepted the challenge to receive an in-game prostateexam while singing ʺTake Me Out to the Ballgameʺ. The catch? FierceFallonʹs Facebook Page had to reach 10,000 ‘Likes’ by Thursday at12:00 PM EST. Supporters quickly jumped onboard and blew past the10K goal shortly after 4:00 PM on Monday afternoon. The exam wasadministered by Dr. Glenn Gangi of Atlantic Urology Specialists inConway, SC.

Sunday, August 3rd was the 2nd annual Pink in the Park with a focus on breastcancer awareness. The night featured a mini-base giveaway with the wordsʺSave 2nd Baseʺ to the first 1,000 ladies. Additional highlights included a silentauction with pink bats and bases. All proceeds from the auction, 50/50 rafflesales and more benefited the Mary Kay Foundation. That number exceeded$4,000.

Groups that participated in the Pelicans ticket fundraising program wereable to raise money for their group by selling tickets. Depending on thesize of the group, each ticket sold could raise up to $5 for theorganization. Plus, groups that sold over 300 tickets received aninformation table, a first pitch, a radio segment and the option to host asilent auction or be the beneficiary of the 50/50 raffle for the night.

Relay for LifeThis year the Pelicans teamed upwith Relay for Life to help raiseawareness and funds to fightcancer. The Pelicans attendedmany Relay for Life events,including the opening kick-offceremonies at the Hard Rock Caféand the celebration walk held atBroadway at the Beach.Member –to-Member Business ExpoAs a member of the Myrtle BeachChamber, the Pelicans had a boothat the annual Member-to-MemberBusiness Expo held at the MyrtleBeach Convention Center. Guestswere able to play Guitar Hero for achance to win a 2014 PelicansFlexbook.Dragon Boat RaceThe Pelicans were a sponsor ofthe Dragon Boat Races held inMarket Common. The DragonBoat Races benefit Ground Zero,Myrtle Beach Chapter.

Horry/Georgetown SchoolsDuring 2014 the Myrtle Beach Pelicans worked very closely with theHorry/Georgetown School systems. Staff members volunteered at 10 careerdays at both elementary and middle schools. The Pelicans were involved in 15after school events including festivals, health fairs and field days. However, themost unique activity was the Pelicans Pep Rallies. With a record number ofschools participating in the Pelicans Pep Rally program, the Pelicans were able toprovide entertainment and educational services to prepare students for thestate testing. The Pelicans Pep Rally incorporated Pelicans on-field games withtesting tips that were provided by the schools. Every student who participatedin the pep rally program also received a free membership to the Pelicans KidsClub (this provided them with a free ticket to one game a month- a $10 Value).

SC Children’s MuseumThe Pelicans made severalappearances at the SouthCarolina’s Children’s Museumthis year, including everyMonday for Mascot Mondaysand a special appearance onSuperhero Sunday.

Blue Star MothersBlue Star Mothers is anorganization that is made up ofparents who have childrencurrently serving our country.They are a non-profit groupthat help service those inactive duty and support thefamily members in the States.The Pelicans attended severalof their events throughout theyear, including a breakfastfundraiser.

Horry County Libraries Splash and the Pelicans StreetTeam were regulars at theHorry County Libraries thissummer.

WMBF Blood DriveOnce again in 2014 thePelicans teamed up withWMBF for their annual BloodDrive. Over 200 vouchers weregiven out to donors over thecourse of two days. Accordingto the American Red Cross,130 pints of blood werecollected in Myrtle Beach.That's 390 lives that may besaved from the donations.

Habitat for Humanity Bed RaceSeveral Pelicans Staff members and Rally Sharkcompeted in the 2nd Annual Habitat for HumanityBed Race held at Broadway at the Beach.Participants were asked to build a bed that couldbe raced around a 1/8 mile track. Each team wasasked to raise a minimum of $250. Proceeds fromthe race benefited Habitat for Humanity of HorryCounty and their efforts to eliminate povertyhousing and provide simple, decent, andaffordable housing built in partnership withhomeowners, volunteers and sponsors.

Special OlympicsBoy Scout Expo

The Pelicans have a specialrelationship with the SpecialOlympics. Splash was anattendee at both the HorryCounty Games as well asDarlington County Games.

Memorial Day ParadeThe 3rd Annual Memorial Day Parade was heldon May 24th. The Parade honors Military heroesand this year’s grand marshal was MontelWilliams (US Navy Veteran). The Pelicans gaveWilliams a special honor, which included apersonalized jersey. The Pelicans were alsoparade participates, providing favors to the fansalong the parade route. After the conclusion ofthe parade, we participated in the Veterans DaysOpening Ceremony.

The Pee Dee Area Council ofthe Boy Scouts held its 2014SCOUT EXPO on Saturday,April 5, 2014 at the MyrtleBeach Speedway. Splash wasin attendance helpingdemonstrate all that the BoyScouts have to offer includingpioneering skills, aquaticsafety, campfire cooking andmuch more.

Pelicans Day at the Miracle League FieldFor the 14th season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicanshave worked with the children of the GrandStrand Miracle League. The Miracle Leagueorganization is dedicated to providing those withspecial needs this life-changing opportunity.

Founded in Myrtle Beach in 2001, The MiracleLeague became the second all-access baseballleague in the nation. Fueled by generouscommunity support and a passionate Board, anADA approved, adapted baseball field wasconstructed. The rubberized surface of the fieldis perfect for wheelchairs and walkers, making itthe ideal place to start a league.

Homerun for Autism CampThe homerun for autism campis a one day camp atTicketReturn.Com Field forchildren with Autism. Theplayers work with the kids onhitting, fielding and baserunning skills. The camp alsoincludes a private autographsession for the campers.

Sanofi Healthy Living Presentations

As part of the Sanofi HealthyLiving presentations, playerswent around to youth groupsin the area and talked aboutthe importance of healthyeating and exercise. In totalthe players visited 4 differentgroups and spoke to over 100kids.

Help 4 Kids VolunteersMembers of the 2014 Pelicans teamvolunteered at Help 4 Kids and BackpackBuddies during the season. On thevolunteer trips, the players would organizethe food, stock the shelves and then packbags for the upcoming week.

Low Country Food Bank VolunteersSeveral members of the Pelicansvolunteered at the Low Country food bankthis past season. The players would helpstock shelves and clean the food containersso that they were ready to be delivered tofood pantries.

Camps and ClinicsPelicans players volunteered to be part of boththe Pelicans 3-Day Youth Clinic and the PelicansTravel Ball Team Clinic. The 3- Day clinic wasopen to the public for children ages 7-12. ThePelicans Travel Ball Team was a clinic specificallyfor the official travel ball team of the Pelicans. Inboth clinics, the participants worked on hitting,fielding and base running. The players wouldwork with individuals and with groups toimprove campers skills.
