Chicago5 Reasons this is our kind of townChicago’s gay and lesbian culture stretches around each long avenue and city block. As the third-largest city in the United States, Chicago offers the ultimate metropolitan experience in the heart of the Midwest where meeting new friends and experiencing exciting adventures is as easy as stepping foot into Chi-Town’s vibrant city life, from the South Side music clubs, famous hot dog stands and deep-dish pizza joints to late-night dance clubs in Boystown and Andersonville. Here are a few ways to take LGBT Chicago by storm.

You can tie the knot here! Illinois legalized same-sex civil unions in 2011. Since then, couples from the Midwest have been visiting Chicago to celebrate their love in style.

Each year Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame honors people and organizations that help shape LGBT culture in America.

Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile is the ultimate destination for tag hags. Michigan Avenue is lined with department stores, sophisticated boutiques and the perfect shops to pick up a new frock or designer duds.

A visit to Chicago could never be complete without a gastronomical tour of the city’s famous restaurants – from top shelf to greasy spoons. Top chefs and hometown heroes have both made Chicago home.

Jocks are in luck, too, because Chicago is a big-time sports town. A few years ago, an avid Bulls fan even came out of the closet to the tune of the team’s famous entrance theme.

Chicago Cultural Arts

As home to top art schools like the Art Institute of Chicago – the art scene in Chicago is always looking ahead.

As a longtime Halsted Street institution, Rubin’s Chicago Room has been spotlighting contemporary twists on Pop Art for years in its newly renovated space. Works can also be found through the Gay and Lesbian Artist Network Chicago (GLANCe), a social networking group that regularly exhibits members’ work at the gallery at Center on Halsted.

River North, a chic, cultural hub aptly named for its location north of the Chicago River, is also filled with art shops, antique stores and boutiques. And along the river is Chicago’s iconic Merchandise Mart. Not only is it one of the largest commercial buildings in the world, boasting four million square feet, but it’s home to the Chicago Design Center.

Inside Outside Public art also makes Chicago stand out as a creative capital. Millennium Park proudly displays several works outdoors, like the very famous reflective “Cloud Gate” by Anish Kapoor. And in the park’s Boeing Galleries, sculptures are featured from artists around the world. The Chicago Arts District also hosts 2nd Fridays Gallery Night where more than 30 galleries and art spaces centered near South Halsted and 18th Street open for artist receptions from 6 - 10 p.m. each month.

Live Music and MoreThe music scene in Chicago may be best known for its blues – plenty of famous clubs welcome legends to packed audiences, including the House of Blues, Buddy Guy’s Legends and Kingston Mines – but the alternative

and classical music scenes have also shaped Chicago’s cultural landscape. Young acts perform in alternative spaces all over town like the Aragon Ballroom and the Empty Bottle, while the Symphony Orchestra makes its home in Orchestra Hall.

There are also plenty of music festivals in parks throughout the city, including Grant Park, which is headlined by famous acts each year.

Performing arts also step into the spotlight at Chicago’s own Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Goodman Theatre and premiere shows (and stars) that end up on Broadway.

About Face Theatre, Hubris Productions, and Bare Boned Theatre also tackle LGBT issues with new productions of classic and contemporary works. And the legendary Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus debuts new choral works each season.

Steve Grand The first openly gay male country musician...

Not long ago, Steve Grand was a little-known Chicago singer-songwriter. That changed when his “All-American Boy” posted to YouTube. The song - about unrequited love between two men - went viral, accumulating 3.3. million views and landing Steve on “Good Morning America,” CNN and Buzzfeed’s “24 Most Brilliant Music Videos from 2013.” In March 2014, almost 5,000 fans around the world support his first full-length album, making it the third-most-successful music project ever on KickStarter.

... and Chicago’s own “All-American Boy”

Navigaytour asked Steve a few questions about Chicago - here’s what he had to say:

Page 15: 2014 Chicago Navigaytour

15navigaytour.com

What’s your favorite place for breakfast and what do you order?

There’s this place in Boystown that I’ve liked for a while called “Melrose” (3233 N Broadway-773.327.2060). It’s relaxed and pretty much everything a diner should be. Every time I’m there for breakfast, or really any time of day or night, I order steak and eggs over the turkey sausage, fruit, and a side of pancakes. I love it!

Where would you head after you’re caffeinated that no gay man should miss while visiting?

Oak Street Beach (1001 N Lake Shore Dr. - 312.988.4650) or Hollywood Beach (5800 N Lake Shore Dr. - 312.742.5121)! Hollywood Beach is the gay beach here in the city. If I’m headed north, that’s the place to be. If it’s south, then its Oak Street Beach. Everyone in Chicago is there and the energy is always friendly. Great people watching and a great place to hang out and play music.

Along the way what are the spots most passed by, that you would want them to know about while visiting Chicago?

People pass by Lincoln Park all the time because of Lake Shore Drive, but you’ve got to walk around to appreciate it (500-5700 N Lake Shore Dr. - 312.742.7726). It’s our Central Park… sort of. There are amazing apartment buildings along the way, the free zoo, a farm, a couple of museums and even graves because there used to be a cemetery back in the day. I think a lot of tourists miss out on it.

So now you’re headed out… for the night, your favorite spots?

Hmm, the scene is really changing here lately, so there’s tons of new stuff to do. Replay is a new bar on Halsted. It’s got a great crowd for a warm-up (3439 N Halsted St. - 773.975.9244). Nice outdoor patio and video games if you’re bored, ha ha. For dancing though, the two best places are still old school. In Boystown, there’s Berlin, which gets really crazy as the night goes on (954 W Belmont Ave. – 773.348.4975). If you’re up north, then it’s got to be Big Chicks (5024 N Sheridan Rd. - 773-728-5511). It has awesome music, really friendly crowds and free shots at midnight to keep the party going! The shows too. There are many small venues here that get some pretty big musical acts. There’s a chance to see them up close for half of what you’d pay somewhere else. The Vic, the Riviera and tons of other places.

Best place to eat where and why?

There’s this place on Broadway called Chilam Balam, which is BYOB (3023 N Broadway – 773.296.6901). It’s small-plated Mexican food, but not with everyday stuff. This place is crazy good and the menu changes quite a bit, so there’s something new every time I go.

What would you do after to make the night complete?

There’s this crazy out-of-the-way bar called Spyners Pub, near the western stop on CTA Brown Line (4623 N Western Ave. – 773.784.8719). It’s got a lot of karaoke, girls and it’s an awesome hole in the wall to go and talk with people or get up and belt out a few tunes. One of those places you meet your new BFF, you know.

“For me, I really find solitude when I’m writing and it’s not just

songs. I do a lot of creative writing and journaling. It’s a crazy life.

Sometimes, I feel it helps me make sense of it all. If I can find a

place, anywhere really, where I can start getting those thoughts in my head down on paper. Then, that’s

peace to me. “
