When Breedlove was first founded in 1990, our instruments reflected an

innovative approach to design, craftsmanship, and sound. These three distinct

attributes have always been at the heart of the Breedlove culture. After nearly

a quarter century building remarkable stringed instruments, we’ve done some

serious reflecting and have confirmed our crystal-clear focus around what we

do best. We’ve continued to push the boundaries of what’s possible and are

challenging convention more than ever before. 2014 marks a significant

milestone for Breedlove – we are crafting instruments of tomorrow by

celebrating what is true to Breedlove today: Distinctively Crafted Sound.

With distinctively crafted sound as our guiding principle, we’ve redesigned

our entire product line for 2014. We put the needs and desires of the player

first, and successfully translated the most sought-after sounds, the most

popular playing styles, and the most desired aesthetics into the individual

instruments of the 2014 line. Every instrument is built with a purpose –

DREADNOUGHT, JUMBO, AND PARLOR:

BUILT FOR PROJECTION, VOLUME, AND POWER.The scalloped, ultra-light, forward X-bracing on these

proprietary Breedlove body shapes allows for a quick

note release. Designed for swift, balanced flat-picking,

and fast, clear chording, the deeply scalloped bracing

drives power and allows for rapid release of energy.

The graduated tops provide balance across the entire

tonal spectrum, delivering note-for-note clarity,

richness, and nuance unheard of in instruments

with this much volume and power.

EXOTIC TONEWOODS:

The Breedlove Wood Library offers an extraordinary

assortment of exotic tonewoods. The combined tonal

characteristics of these woods produce an awe-inspiring

spectrum of sounds. Breedlove luthiers pair back and side

tonewoods with carefully selected soundboards to craft

specific sound perfectly suited to your playing style and

musical preferences. For example, the Breedlove

sinker redwood/ziricote Exotic Fingerstylist concert

delivers warmth with punch; the Adirondack/quilted

maple Masterclass 12 String fills a performance hall with

a wall of rich, deep sound; and the Adirondack/Brazilian

rosewood Exotic Flatpicker dreadnought will stand out

no matter how many instruments are on stage.

BREEDLOVE ASYMMETRICAL HEADSTOCK:

The asymmetrical headstock is featured on CM, Concert,

Auditorium, and 12-String body shapes. This headstock

isn’t just a pretty shape – it’s specifically designed to keep

the strings in a straight, even line from the nut to the

tuning pegs. The result is even tension, stable tuning,

and ease of alternate tuning.

BREEDLOVE NECK DESIGN:

Breedlove guitar necks feature a slimmer neck pro

which enables comfortable play, even with smalle

aesthetically innovative design is actually a triumph

of science and sound engineering. Early on,

Breedlove re-engineered the acoustic guitar by

re-envisioning the ways each and every component

contributes to the overall sound. It’s what goes

into a Breedlove that truly delivers unparalleled

distinctively crafted sound. Creating purpose-built

sound is no easy task, but as you browse the

coming pages, you’ll see various combinations of

the following elements, artfully combined in each

model to create your signature sound.

BREEDLOVE BRIDGE TRUSS (BBT):

Select models feature the Breedlove Bridge Truss –

most commonly the Concert and Auditorium shapes

found on pages 24 - 35. The BBT reduces tension on the

soundboard of the guitar, so the top wood is able to

vibrate more freely, producing remarkable sustain,

balance, and clarity. The BBT also allows for a thinner

graduated top, thereby allowing Breedlove craftsmen to

bring out the optimal sound from the top wood without

sacrificing structural stability. Relieving much of the string

tension from the bridge prevents “bridge belly,”

ensuring top stability for decades.

BREEDLOVE GRADUATED TOPS:

Breedlove graduated tops, featured on select models,

contribute stunning balance from lows to highs. How?

Graduated tops are slightly thicker on the treble side,

balancing the higher energy treble frequencies with the

lower energy bass frequencies traveling through the thinner

bass side. The result: clearer, cleaner highs and stable,

resonant lows.

Guitar strings can exert up to 230 pounds of pull from

the nut to the bridge. Traditional methods for preventing

top bowing at the bridge usually involve heavy internal

bracing and thicker tops. The BBT compensates for this

pressure in an innovative way: The BBT is mounted to the

bridge from the inside and is connected into the tail block

of the guitar, pulling downward on the underside of the

bridge to distribute some of the tension, relieving pressure

on the top. The resulting tonal effect on BBT-equipped

guitars is more resonance and livelier sound with

enhanced overtones.

BREEDLOVE PINLESS BRIDGE:

The Breedlove Pinless Bridge helps maintain the integrity

of the top by eliminating the need for six drilled string

holes. The fewer holes in your soundboard, the more

evenly the sound wave can move across the interior,

without any loss of energy. The Breedlove Pinless

Bridge also provides a gentler string-break angle from

the bridge to the top of the saddle, reducing saddle strain.

This innovative bridge also makes string changes a breeze,

especially on 12 strings. Plus, you’ll never again have to

worry about lost, worn-out, or broken bridge pins.

Because no two soundboards are exactly the same,

Breedlove craftsmen evaluate each top for stiffness and

density, and then graduate it accordingly. The amount of

graduation is customized for each individual instrument.

The top is sanded to the precise graduated thickness to

achieve optimal flexibility and stiffness. This hands-on

process is one of the major contributors to the

Breedlove sound.

In 1973, while on a surf trip, Kim Breedlove visited the town of Paracho, Mexico lo

buy a mandolin. He got the mandolin and a lot more: In that little town bustling wit

luthiers, Kim realized he wanted to spend his life pursuing the craft of luthiery.

For 40 years, mandolins have been Kim’s passion, so as you can imagine, they’re a

special part of the Breedlove collection. Kim has never been one to imitate or follow

convention, and as a result, there is nothing ordinary about Breedlove mandolins.

Kim has spent decades applying his creativity and expertise to the traditional mand

form, and has fine-tuned the 2014 models to deliver balance, tonal clarity, and fulln

sound. These instruments deliver an experience and a sound that is uniquely Breedlo

THE F BODY SHAPEKim Breedlove reinterpreted the traditional Florentine mandolin in the F body –

the headstock, weight, size, and volume are very similar to the Florentine shape.

It features a unique retro-inspired peg head and a pronounced scroll on the bass

upper bout. The rim depth is shallower, and the overall top arc is slightly com-

pressed for a distinct throaty sound and a powerful bark that will particularly

appeal to bluegrass players.

The Breedlove ukulele collection is driven by Kim Breedlove’s personal passion.

His long-standing infatuation with ukuleles is born from his connection to Hawaii –

every year, he spends several weeks in the middle of the Pacific in the lush island

landscapes, overlooking powerful pristine seas.
