UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the

Church of the Nazarene,

Mount Vernon Nazarene

University held its first

classes in October of 1968

on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was

purchased by public subscription and donated to the university.

With an enrollment of around 2,200 students, MVNU is the official

university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the

Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the

university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia,

and the eastern half of Kentucky.

The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life

activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character,

value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is

expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve."

The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range

of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and

master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and

women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball,

men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s

golf), and students can take part in an active intramural program.

The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm

farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River,

constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of

Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing

Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City."

Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven

apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch,

Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students.

Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three

large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the

Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm

Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation

Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource

Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building.

The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter

Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well.

UNIVERSITY INFORMATION In addition to the central campus, the university owns a 70-acre tract of

woodland just six miles northeast of the city. Currently, this tract is used as a

biological field station for MVNU's biology and natural resources programs.

Academic Programs The university offers over 40 majors with more than 80 different programs from its 21 academic departments. President Dr. Henry W. Spaulding II was elected as the seventh president of

Mount Vernon Nazarene University on November 2, 2012. Before his

election, he served briefly as interim president. He first came to MVNU to

serve as the provost and chief academic officer in 2009.

Dr. Spaulding was a professor at Nazarene Theological Seminary from

2007-2009 prior to coming to MVNU. He was also the dean of arts and

sciences and professor of theology and philosophy at Trevecca Nazarene

(Tenn.) University from 1995-2007.

Dr. Spaulding received his undergraduate degree in history and religion

from Trevecca Nazarene University. He went on to Nazarene Theological

Seminary to earn a Master of Divinity degree. His doctoral work was done at

Florida State University in religion and humanities.

Dr. Spaulding has been married to Sharon for 40 years and they have

three adult children: Shelly, Megan, and Henry III.

HEAD COACH KEITH VEALE

Keith Veale is entering his 25th season as the head coach of the MVNU baseball program. Over the past 24 years, Veale has led the Cougars to an 807-415 overall record (.660), seven conference titles, five National Christian College Athletic Association national championships, and the school’s only two berths in the NAIA World Series in 1997 and 2004. MVNU has also won 30 or more games 18 times under Veale, and topped the 40-win mark during five of those years.

In 2013, Veale guided the Cougars to a 33-20 record as they advanced to the Crossroads League Tournament championship game and earned a berth in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the fourth straight year. Veale has been selected as the NCCAA National Coach of the Year six times and conference Coach of the Year seven times, and he was tabbed as the NAIA Region Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997, and 2007. He has seen his teams qualify for postseason play in the NAIA in 23 of his 24 years at the helm, and he has also had 12 players sign professional baseball contracts during his tenure at MVNU. In 1996, Veale led the Cougars to a 43-3 overall record, setting the NAIA record for best winning percentage in a season (.935). That team also put together a school-record 24-game winning streak at one point. To show that 1996 was not a fluke, Veale and the Cougars posted a program-best 47-8 overall record in 1997. The team also went 17-1 in the conference and advanced to the NAIA World Series in Sioux City, Iowa, for the first time in school history. MVNU’s other NAIA World Series berth came in 2004 in Lewiston, Idaho, with a fifth-place finish. A native of Owosso, Michigan, Veale graduated from John Wesley (Mich.) College in 1979 after playing baseball for four years, tennis for two years, and soccer for a year. He came to MVNU after graduation, and in addition to coaching baseball, he has served as the women’s volleyball coach (1983), the men’s soccer coach (1988), the women’s softball coach (1987-1989), and the intramural director (1979-1988). Veale was inducted into the Cougar Wall of Fame in October 2007. Veale, who is also MVNU’s athletic director, resides in Mount Vernon with his wife, Toni. The couple has two grown children, Elyia and Kodi.

ASSISTANT COACHES AND SID

Dan Matheney is entering his sixth year as an assistant coach at MVNU after a successful playing career for the Cougars from 2001-2004. An infielder during his playing days, Matheney was selected as an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as a senior as he helped MVNU reach the NAIA World Series for the second time in program history. He was also an NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete. He works primarily with the MVNU infielders. Matheney and his wife, Ali, reside in Mount Vernon. He serves as a math instructor at the Knox County Career Center.

Steve Miller is entering his second year as an assistant coach for the Cougars after posting a solid four-year career at MVNU from 2008-2011. He posted a 9-5 career record on the mound with a 3.96 ERA and three saves in 51 career appearances. He was named to the American Mideast Conference First Team as a senior when he posted a 2-1 record with a 1.26 ERA that included a shutout in his first start of the year to clinch a share of the AMC regular-season title. Miller, who resides in Mount Vernon, served for one year as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan University in 2012.

Justin Brown is entering his first year as an assistant coach for the Cougars after posting a 15-10 record and a 3.80 ERA during his four years on the mound for MVNU from 2010-2013. In 56 games that included 26 starts, he tossed 12 complete games and struck out 157 batters in 199 innings. He was named to the Crossroads League Team as a senior as well as twice being the Crossroads League Pitcher of the week. Brown, who resides in Westerville, began his career with the Cougars in the bullpen before starting 24 of the final 25 games in which he pitched.

Dave Parsons is entering his 16th year as the sports information director at MVNU and his 21st season working in the school’s sports information office. Prior to assuming the role as SID, Parsons served as the assistant SID for five years – a role that he began during his senior year at MVNU and continued in upon graduation in 1994. Parsons, who resides with his family in Mount Vernon, was selected as the MVNU Staff Member of the Year in 2009 and also received the Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award as the NAIA Sports Information Director of the Year in 2008.

BASEBALL FACILITIES

The MVNU baseball team plays its home games at Cougar Field, which is located adjacent to the Physical Education Center on campus. The field was renovated for the 2011 season with a ProGrass Synthetic Turf infield being installed to go with the natural grass outfield. The press box will accommodate up to two radio stations and an electronic scoreboard features inning-by-inning scoring. The dimensions of Cougar Field are 327 down the leftfield line, 390 to centerfield, and 350 down the rightfield line. There are in-ground dugouts on both sides and bullpen areas down both foul lines. The field is known for its exceptional natural drainage that makes it playable in almost all conditions. In addition to Cougar Field, the team practices during the off-season in the Physical Education Center and the hitting facility that is beyond the rightfield fence. This facility (built in 1998) is a 100-by-50-foot fully turfed building that is capable of providing three batting cages as well as infield versatility.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Despite a winter filled with brutally cold weather and a plethora of snow, the hope of spring looms just around the corner and with it what should be another exciting baseball season for the 2014 Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars. MVNU is coming of a 33-20 campaign in 2013 that saw the Cougars post a 20-10 record in the highly competitive Crossroads League. MVNU also advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the fourth straight year becoming one of only a handful of programs to be able to boast that status. Head coach Keith Veale will enter his 25th season guiding the team. During that span, the Cougars have compiled a 807-415 overall record and earned a berth in the NAIA postseason in 23 of the 24 seasons. This year's roster will returns a starter at nearly every position as well as all but one of last season's starting pitchers. Combine that experience with several talented and versatile newcomers and there is good reason for optimism. "This is a pretty special group," said Veale. "We have strong relationships and postseason experience that will provide an edge we hope to lean on." Handling the MVNU pitching staff this year will be a trio of veteran catchers. Junior Clint Spencer (.330, 13 RBI) and sophomore Efrain Montero (.283, 20 RBI) split time behind the plate last year and combined to throw out 19 of the 53 base runners who tried to steal on them. Junior Corey Kubbs (.333) will also provide depth at the position. Senior Seth Eller returns at first base after being a Crossroads League Honorable Mention selection and the conference's Gold Glove winner at that position after 406 fielding chances with no errors. He batted .374 and led the team with 41 runs scored while also driving in 27 runs. Junior Cory Brown (.258, 30 runs scored) and freshman Jeturi Brown will also compete for time. Junior Sterling Harpst returns at second base after winning a Crossroads League Gold Glove there in 2013. He posted a .254 batting average with 15 RBI and committed just seven errors in 194 chances. Freshmen Jaime Montero and Corey Gould will also be in the mix. Sophomore Riley Swanson returns to anchor the shortstop position for the Cougars after being named both the Crossroads League Newcomer of the Year and the third member of the MVNU infield to earn a conference Gold Glove. He batted .325 with 29 RBI and a team-best 19 doubles. Harpst, Montero, and Gould provide depth at the position if necessary. Junior Kenny McCambridge (.310, 32 RBI) returns at third base after 43 starts, while junior Josh Leonard also started nine games. Gould and Montero could also serve as backups. The Cougars have five good options for the three outfielder spots. Junior Jake Dickerson was a Crossroads League selection a year ago after leading MVNU in nearly every offensive category with a .398 batting average, seven home runs, 38 runs scored, and 51 RBI. Junior Andrew Fila (.313, 39 runs scored), senior Sean Fleming (.292, 23 runs scored), and Brown are also experience players, while junior transfer Anthony Clark is set to make an immediate impact. The probable starting rotation for the Cougars features five players who return from a year ago. Senior right-hander Mike Kochheiser (6-5, 4.13 ERA), sophomore right-hander Ben Hoar (7-2, 3.34 ERA), sophomore right-hander Lucas Daugherty (3-1, 1.97 ERA), senior right-hander Seth Eller (0-0, 9.00 ERA), and sophomore left-hander Roberto Cediel (3-2, 3.93 ERA). The rest of the bullpen will consist of five players with very little college pitching experience and a starter moving into the closer role. Freshmen left-handers Bryce Arledge and Jake Tharp, freshman right-hander Jacob Chrysler, junior right-hander Andrew Fila, and sophomore lefty Cameron Juhasz will each look to be effective and gobble up innings whenever Veale turns the ball over to them, while McCambridge has been tabbed as the team's closer after going 5-4 with a 5.47 ERA in 10 games as a starter. He walked just 15 batters in 54.1 innings with 32 strikeouts The Cougars will open the season with a pair of home non-conference twinbills and then head to the Lakeland, Fla. area for 13 games on the team's annual spring trip. Four of those games will come against Huntington (Ind.) University and count towards Crossroads League play. Upon returning north, MVNU will play home and away doubleheaders against the rest of the conference. Taylor (Ind.) University is the preseason favorite, while Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Bethel (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Marian (Ind.) University, Grace (Ind.) College, and Goshen (Ind.) College will all prove to be tough challenges each and every time out. "We feel we have the foundational pieces for a championship run," said Veale. "Baseball is a strange game at times, but through the ups and downs of a compact spring schedule we feel we have the talent to compete and compete well."

MVNU’S AFFILIATIONS

The Crossroads League, formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, was founded in 1959 and is one of the oldest conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Crossroads League currently consists of 10 institutions located in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio: Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, Huntington

(Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Taylor (Ind.) University.

The purpose of the Crossroads League is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The conference sponsors championships in 14 sports (seven for men and seven for women). Crossroads League student athletes and teams also make their mark on the NAIA national level by virtue of national championships, All-Americans, Scholar-Athletes, national rankings, and statistical leaders.

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited.

MVNU’S AFFILIATIONS With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the mid-1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade point average while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The Scholar-Athlete program, a longstanding NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student-athletes with a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletics programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust – a relationship strengthened year after year.

The National Christian College Athletic Association is a miracle organization. Over the years, an idea has become a reality providing Christian student-athletes in Christian colleges and universities both an opportunity for fellowship and competition on a national level. The NCCAA game plan is to produce true winners – a game plan that will carry an individual through his or her entire life. The game plan is devised to draw out the student-athlete’s greatest potential in body, mind, and spirit. Since its first tournament in 1968, the NCCAA has grown to encompass more than 100 Christian colleges and universities nationwide, both liberal arts and Bible colleges in stature. The participating schools are dedicated not only to the best athletic competition possible, but also to exemplifying Jesus Christ in everything. The NCCAA is an organization bringing Christian colleges and universities together not just for athletic competition. More importantly, it is an organization bringing schools together which have common goals in Christian higher education.

MVNU PLAYERS IN THE PROS

Tim Belcher helped to put the MVNU baseball program on the map when he became the first Cougar to be drafted by a professional baseball team. In the June 1983 amateur draft, Belcher was selected as the very first pick in the draft by the Minnesota Twins. He was the first MVNU athlete to have his jersey (#21) retired and was the second member of the Cougar Wall of Fame (1994), and he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame at the 2004 NAIA World Series. During three years at MVNU, Belcher received numerous accolades. Following his junior season in 1983, he was named to the Sporting News All-American Team and selected as an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. He threw a no-hitter against Kenyon College during that season and was overpowering in the game with a school-record 18 strikeouts and no walks.

Belcher won 146 games with seven different major league teams (Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, and Anaheim Angels) over 14 seasons. He also won three playoff games as a member of the 1988 world champion Dodgers and was the opening game starter in the World Series in the game where Kirk Gibson hit the dramatic walk-off home run. He led the National League in complete games and shutouts in 1989. He also served as the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians in 2010 and 2011.

MVNU PLAYERS IN THE PROS Marty McLeary became the second former Cougar to reach the Major League level when he made his debut with the San Diego Padres on August 22, 2004, against the Florida Marlins. McLeary appeared in three games in relief for the Padres that season. McLeary was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the 1997 amateur baseball draft. After pitching in the Boston minor league system for six years and playing in the Double-A All-Star Game (2001) and the Arizona Fall League (2002), he signed with the Florida Marlins in 2003 and pitched primarily with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A). He was traded to the San

Diego Padres’ organization just prior to Opening Day 2004 and joined the Portland Beavers (Triple-A). He appeared in the 2004 Triple-A All-Star Game and was the Rolaids Relief Man award winner in July 2004. After spending 2005 with the Beavers again, McLeary signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates during the off-season and was invited to Spring Training in 2006. After picking up three wins with the Pirates in Spring Training, McLeary began the 2006 season with the Indianapolis Indians (Triple-A). After posting a 3-4 record with a 2.68 ERA, two saves, and 115 strikeouts in 104 innings of work, he was promoted to Pittsburgh in August. In five appearances with the Pirates including two starts, McLeary posted a 2-0 record with a 2.04 ERA in 17.2 innings. McLeary spent most of the 2007 season with the Indianapolis Indians again although he did make four more appearances with the Pirates. In January 2008, he signed to play for the Lotte Giants – a professional team in the Korea Baseball Organization. He spent most of 2008 in Korea before closing out the season in the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league system. After spending the entire 2009 season and the start of the 2010 season in the Blue Jays’ system, he closed out his career by going 7-4 with a 5.15 ERA as a starting pitcher for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A team of the Milwaukee Brewers. In 438 career minor league appearances that spanned 14 seasons, McLeary posted a 62-80 record with a 4.27 ERA and 936 strikeouts in 1,183.1 innings of work. He also had 25 saves and two career shutouts, and he started 138 games on the mound.
