2014 Australasian Masters Bulletin 6 – Thursday December 18, 2014 Editor – Kerry Stead Thirteen year old International Master Anton Smirnov has once again taken the lead in the Australasian Masters GM event after defeating IM Bobby Cheng to move to 4/5. Anton is now the only undefeated player in the event after previous leader GM Vasily Papin was defeated by GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev. Papin now drops to second place, half a point behind Smirnov, while the Kazakh Grandmasters Kazhgaleyev & Khusnutdinov are tied for third a further half point behind. The IM event has become extremely tight, with three players tied for first on 3.5/5 – IM Kanan Izzat, IM Igor Bjelobrk & Yi Liu. FMs Bob Smith & Bill Jordan are half a point behind them, so the tournament is still very much up for grabs! On the way to chess this morning I saw the film The Dark Horse, based on the life of New Zealand chess player Genesis Poutini. It is an interesting film, where chess plays a fairly sizable role (although the film is ultimately about Genesis' life, much of it focuses on his work with the Eastern Chess Club). Well worth watching if you can find it (its only screening at two cinemas in Melbourne & there's very few screenings left before Christmas). Vasily Papin once again played his favourite English Opening against Murtas Kazhgaleyev& found himself in a reversed Hedgehog position out of the opening. Kazhgaleyev opened the centre & took control of the d-file before Papin overlooked a tactic that gave Kazhgaleyev two minor pieces for a rook. The Kazakh Grandmaster then displayed excellent technique to convert the position to a win, sacrificing one of his minor pieces to ensure he promoted a pawn, before Papin resigned when faced with a grim rook against queen endgame, with a few pawns still on the board.

Junta Ikeda played the Semi-Slav Defence against Luke Li & early in the game the position was very unusual, with a somewhat unusual pawn structure. However a number of exchanges simplified the position & it seemed that Li had the better of the resulting rook & minor piece ending due to his advanced queenside pawns. Li seemed to have opportunities to take further control of the game, however chose the safer option & this allowed Ikeda time to consolidate his position. Eventually all the pieces were exchanged & the players were left with nothing but bare kings on the board, so the game was drawn.

Max Illingworth played a Najdorf Sicilian against Moulthun Ly & seemed to equalise the position out of the opening after Ly played a solid continuation. Illingworth developed somepressure on the queenside, which he eventually converted into a pawn advantage. The players then found themselves in a long queen & knight endgame, which saw Illingworth slowly improve his position, before setting up a mating net. Ly tried sacrificing his knight fora perpetual check, however Illingworth was able to run his king to safety, forcing Ly to resign.

Rustam Khusnutdinov played the Advance variation agaionst Karl Zelesco's French Defence & gained a slight edge out of the opening due to his space advantage. After the major pieces were exchanged, Khusnutdinov made excellent use of his knight & bishop against Zelesco's bishop pair in the blocked position before finally trapping Zelesco's bishop. When Khusnutdinov managed to create a passed pawn, Zelesco resigned.

Bobby Cheng played a Pirc Defence against Anton Smirnov & sacrificed a pawn for some piece play early in the game. Smirnov took the material & then grabbed an exchange before finding a number of defensive moves to keep his king safe. Cheng had the opportunity to exchange pieces & potentially defend a difficult endgame, but he chose to leave the major pieces on the board & Smirnov used these to maintain control of the position & slowly march his extra pawns forward. The end came after Cheng allowed a rook check on the seventh rank, which left his king without a defence & once Smirnov's king was safe, Cheng was forced to resign.
