The Shepherd’s Watch

Life Groups New Name & New Vision for Small GroupsComing this Fall!

At Shepherd of the Hills, we believe God does great things in the context of relationships. As we seek to create a small group culture here at SHPC, we will implement Life Groups beginning in September.

These Life Groups will be an important part of our discipleship path. Life Groups will be small groups of people who meet regularly in homes to read God's Word together, listen for God's leading together, share life's burdens, joys, and concerns together and serve others in the community together.

Life Groups MISSION & VISION MISSION: To be a life-giving church as we live out Christ’s Great Commandment & Great Commission by building disciples of Christ. Simply stated, to love God and to love others. VISION: To see every person who comes through the doors of SHPC connected to a healthy Life Group.

All Life Groups will focus on balancing SHPC’s 5 core Biblical purposes: Connect, Grow, Invite, Worship & Serve. We want individuals to experience these 5 Biblical purposes in the context of a small group so, ultimately, they become part of each individual’s daily life.

Life Groups will begin in September with sign-ups starting on Sunday August 24th. Life Groups will start meeting together in various homes throughout South Austin beginning the week of September 14th. The 1st Session will be a 6-week study. At the end of the six weeks you and your group will have the option to continue together by taking on new studies & deepening your relationships with one another.

We hope that you will begin praying now about joining a Life Group in September! If you have any questions about the upcoming Life Groups, please contact Pastor Ted at [email protected].

TRUE STUDENT MINISTRIESThe Greatest Escape! 30 Great Middle Schoolers, 4 Great Volunteers, 1 Great Week

In June, we took our Middle school students on a week-long adventure, traveling all the way to Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. The sky was bluer, the air was cooler (and at 9000 ft above sea level, considerably thinner), and God was at work in big ways.

We joined five hundred other middle school students and leaders from churches all over the nation for a life-changing week. Many kids made first time commitments to our God and now know him as a God who loves them more than they could possibly understand or imagine. That first time commitment is an enormous step for a student to take, and it was a true honor to get to be with them for this experience.

While at camp, we made tons of friends, we danced like crazy and we worshiped like people in love with Jesus.

Our big highlight was white water rafting like true professionals. This trip was full of adventure at every turn.

We will never forget our amazing Dairy Queen experience in Dalhart. We will never forget the many emergency potty stops. We will never forget that night when we all shared deeply with each other and built up our trust in one another. We will never forget how God moved in our lives when we took the time to give Him space then simply listen for His word.

Each day started with a quiet time with God. The kids would read

and study scripture, answer a few questions and pray for the rest of the

day. It was amazing

watching our kids taking the time to retreat from the camp’s energy and re-encounter God on a very contemplative level.

By far, this is our favorite trip for our tween and middle school students, and not just because it is such a fun adventure. Over and over again when we ask kids why they love the Great Escape so much, they begin to talk about their faith. They recognize that during those nine days and nights, they focused their hearts and minds on their relationship with God.

A huge thank you goes out to our incredible volunteer team who gave of their time and money to make this trip possible. We are so very grateful to Elisa Donnell, Matthew Willis, Katie Beth Willis and Cindy Bashnagel for their commitment to our ministry through this amazing trip. Camps like the Great Escape are not possible without people who give so much to make sure the students in True can know Jesus deeply and personally.

Right now, more than 30 members of the Shepherd of the Hills family, including several youth, are in Guatemala sharing God’s love through service at the San Bartolome School, Hogar

(orphanage) and other locations where they will help provide clean drinking water and education through Living Waters

for the World. Please keep our travelers, the friends they will serve, and their spiritual journey your prayers!

True Student Ministries Needs Leaders! We’re looking for adult leaders for our Middle School ministries. If you’re

interested or want to explore the opportunity and talk about what our middle school leaders do, please contact Pastor Mike Killeen.

We need many, many leaders to commit to our vibrant and still growing ministry, so please be praying for God to provide those leaders as well as how He might use you in the lives of our students!

CHILDREN & FAMILIES

Preschool HappeningsSummer 2014 – this is the first year SHPC Preschool

has offered summer camps! Our camps turned out GREAT, and we are thrilled we’ve been able to have so many campers in our program.

We offered 5 camps this summer, including Gardening, Transportation, Circus, Oceans and Camping. And each day has its own theme, too: Messy Monday, Tasting Tuesday, Water Wednesday, Theater Thursday and Fun Science Friday. The campers did lots of painting, tasted fun snacks, played with sprinklers, put on plays and experimented with different materials. We even have a new garden on the playground! Many thanks to the families who signed up for the camp weeks – we had a blast!!

Many thanks from SHPC preschool summer campers and staff to Erica and Sam Taylor, otherwise known as Lucky the Clown, for volunteering at our circus camp. The campers really enjoyed the face painting and balloon animals! ! We appreciate you very much!

We are now gearing up for our 28th school year. We are welcoming a few new staff members – stop by and say hello.

~Pattie Lawrence, Preschool Director

Say YES! to the Next Generation

Have you been thinking about sharing a little more on Sunday mornings? Do you long for more music and movement activities? Do you wish you could create with Play-dough/play freeze dance/run relay races/FILL-IN-THE-BLANK-WITH-FUN every week? We've got a spot open for you!

Join one of our Children's Ministry teams this August and learn more about Playing for Keeps. We want to make sure that each child at SHPC has a kind and loving adult to speak into his/her life at all of the stages of development. We need team members who can't wait to WONDER with our Preschoolers, and who are ready for a journey of DISCOVERY with our Elementary kiddos. We want every group of 8-12 kids to have their own Small Group leader at every level to create an even stronger influence…and we need YOU to make that happen!

We have all sorts of opportunities for all sorts of folks: from behind-the-scenes, to building the scenes, to leading a small group every Sunday morning. Please visit the Children's Ministry table at either campus for specifics on opportunities, or talk with Chris Gordon about what skills you would like to share. [email protected]

Register Today!Registration for Family Camp closes on August 4th.

This is sure to be a memorable weekend filled with worship time, play time, and relaxation together, and we pray that your family will take part!

ADULT MINISTRYADULT MINISTRYMen’s Book Club

The SHPC Men’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, September 4th, on the Wm Cannon Campus in Room 9. Please join us as we discuss Stephen Cox’s American Christianity: The Continuing Revolution. According to the publisher, “Cox demonstrates that American Christianity must be seen not as a sociological phenomenon but as the ever-changing story of individual people seeking their own connections with God, constantly reinventing their religion, making it more volatile, more colorful, and more fascinating.”

The Singing Waiters of Cedar Park

The Singing Waiters of Cedar Park is a gospel singing group dedicated to bringing back the classic gospel hymns we use to sing as children. We will have a grand time listening to (and probably singing along with) these hymns. After the music, we will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our own Beth Watson. Come and bring a friend! The date is Tuesday, August 19th, at 11:30 AM. For reservations contact Jeanette or Gordon Box at (512) 2807751 and [email protected]

"D-Day, Normandy 1944"Bob Bullock Museum IMAX

June 6, 1944 the largest Allied operation of WWII began in Normandy, France, yet few know in detail exactly why and how this region became the most important location in the world. Exploring history, military strategy, science technology and human values, the film educates and appeals to all. We will meet at the SHPC on Tuesday, August 5th at 10 AM to car pool to the Museum. After the movie, we can have lunch at the Museum or a local restaurant of your choice. For reservations call or email Mary Helen MacAllister at (512) 288-6362 and [email protected].

Put August 23rd on your calendar for our next quilt workday! Remember, we always meet on the 4th Saturday (not the last Saturday).
