President’s Report

One day we watch the Turkey Trot runners pass by and then prepare and eat a huge turkey dinner, and the next day we decorate our homes for the holidays.

This Thanksgiving, I hope you took the time to

We take so many of these things for granted. Compared to so many other places in the world, we are indeed blessed! I feel blessed to be able to live in a secure place with such great beauty, to be free of hunger and pain, to be warm and well clothed, and to be able to freely express my opinion when I desire to.

I hope you will enjoy the company of family and friends during this beautiful time of the year. With all the decorations, our plantation looks its best — even without a blanket of snow! Take the time to admire the many decorated homes and vote for your favorite (see details on page 7 - Deadline for votes is December 19). Of course you can do this by car, but the hayride is even better! (see details on page 7)

the POA staff in your thoughts. They serve us with grace and kindness all year long. Please take a minute and wish them a happy holiday season, too!

I would like to extend my very best wishes and those of the Board for a Merry Christmas, belated Happy Chanukah (it came early this year, starting

health!

We are always interested in your comments and constructive criticisms. Call us at 681-8800, Ext 9. Or you can email us at: [email protected]. If you wish to contact the Board President directly you can email me at: [email protected].

General Manager’s ReportRepresenting HHPHilton Head Plantation continues to make huge strides in real estate sales. The months of July, August, September, and October posted the highest volume of home sales in over eight years. To help maintain that position and continue the enhancement of property values in HHP, the POA Board is focused on additional improvements, two of the major ones in the works are: working with Crown Castle International to dramatically improve both cell phone coverage and data services, and upgrades to the Spring Lake Pool. During this special time of year, when HHP takes on a magical appearance amid all the holiday decorations, we have a unique opportunity to showcase the place we call home.

The most valuable endorsement of HHP comes from you. It's our collective responsibility to advocate for the great place we call home. Here are a few key points to help you polish up your “elevator” speech: HHP is a residential community; we have an abundance of natural beauty, 4 golf courses, 12 Har-tru tennis courts, a new state-of-the-art clubhouse – the Spring Lake Pavilion, 10 miles of leisure paths, a full-service country club, a

outstanding security, a marina, miles of beaches, the Bluff walk, Whooping Crane and Cypress Conservancies, a diversity of house styles and price points; we are

we have activities for every age group; we are family and kid-friendly; and we have one of the lowest annual assessments in the area. These are just a few points to get your started.

Support Local Businesses We are all trying our best to keep our household costs in check. During the shoulder seasons, especially if you have the occasion to eat out or require a service provider for a repair or other need, keep in mind our local establishments. Our local restaurants and service providers depend on Island residents to keep them going during the off-season. Please consider patronizing

Monopine UpdateIt was reported in the November 15, edition of Plantation Living that the Town of Hilton Head Island has approved the minor zoning change needed on the parcel of land where the easement for the new monopine will be placed. With that approval, the way was cleared for a building permit to be issued and construction to build the monopine would have commenced on or about December 1, 2013. After the November edition of Plantation Living was sent to press, the POA learned that one individual has appealed the Town of Hilton Head's decision to make the minor zoning change needed to allow the monopine project to move forward to the Town

of Hilton Head's Board of Zoning Appeals. This appeal with the Board of Zoning Appeals has been scheduled for December 16, 2013.

Commission questions the Town’s decision to allow the POA to subdivide our common property to carve out the easement area granted to Crown Castle International and seems to indicate that a violation of our governing documents occurred. This Appeal before the Planning Commission is scheduled for January 15, 2014.

This will delay the start of the project until the outcome of these Appeals of the Town's decisions are determined. Although we cannot predict the outcome of such actions,

correctly and their decisions will be upheld. Crown Castle International is the company that will build the monopine. POA representatives have spoken with the Project Manager for Crown Castle International and both the POA and Crown Castle International are committed

overwhelming number of property owners who have poor to nonexistent cell phone service on HHP. Verizon will be the anchor tenant on the monopine with AT&T taking the second slot. Up to two additional carriers can be supported on the monopine.

It is the Town of Hilton Head's number one priority to improve cell phone and other wireless services Island-wide. It is also a top priority of the HHPPOA to improve cell phone and wireless services on Hilton Head Plantation.

The monopine, which has been proposed, will be

will be enclosed in a ten-foot high wooden slat fence and surrounded by heavy vegetation.

As soon as we have the results of the Board of Zoning Appeals meeting on December 16, and the Planning Commission Hearing on January 15, 2014, we will pass the information along to you.

Spring Lake Pool Renovation ProjectOver 100 residents attending a meeting the end of October to discuss the proposed Spring Lake Pool renovation project. After hearing the background on the proposed project, receiving a presentation from the

lowdown from Board member Jerry Cutrer, residents provided their input, suggestions, and comments. The Board members listened to these comments and authorized the General Manager to engage Wood+Partners to move ahead with the planning and permitting phase of the project. If the Board decides to move forward with the entire project, construction would begin in the fall of 2015 and the pool would reopen

in the spring of 2016. Much needs to occur to bring such a project to fruition. We will keep you posted as this project is considered further by the Board. The planning and permitting phase does not authorize the entire project; this is just the next phase of the process that may lead to the ultimate approval of the pool renovation.

Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy FoundationDue to your generosity, the Conservancy Foundation was able to make additional improvements to the Whooping Crane and Cypress Conservancies, including the application of additional mulch to the parking lot and the addition of new signs for the Cypress Conservancy. Funds from the Conservancy Foundation also repaired the Whooping Crane Boardwalk that was severely damaged when a tree fell across the boardwalk during a thunderstorm. These projects have brought down the coffers of the Conservancy Foundation (HHPCF). The Trustees for the HHPCF would like to make additional improvements and make sure funds are available for additional repairs. This year’s assessment mailing will contain a letter from the Foundation’s Fundraising Chair, Miriam Waterhouse, asking you to consider making a voluntary donation. As always, your contributions are tax-deductible. Please look for Miriam Waterhouse’s letter in your January 2014 assessment mailing.

Foundation. If you'd like to make a donation before the end of 2013, please make out your check to the Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy Foundation (HHPCF) and either drop it off at the POA Service Center or mail it to HHPCF, 7 Surrey Lane, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Coffee with PeterOur next Coffee is scheduled for Thursday, Febru-ary 20, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Besides our usual updates and a Q&A period, the Town of Hilton Head Fire Chief Lavarn Lucas will speak on cardiac care. We'll also use part of the meeting to introduce the candidates that are running for the three open seats on the Board. If you are new to our lovely community, these Coffees are a great way to get up-to-speed on the operations of the Plantation.

Hayrides and Holiday DecorationsI want to thank everyone who has decorated their homes for the Christmas observance. Your efforts are

a gift to your neighborhoods and allow HHP to take on a special festive appearance for all to enjoy. I would encourage all residents to get involved in the spirit of the season. For those whose homes are along the hayride route, I would encourage you to turn your outdoor and indoor decorations on. Your displays add to the ambiance experienced by those participating in the hayride. The time, date, and hayride route can be found on page 7.

It merely indicates that these projects/purchases will be evaluated by the Board and staff based on present status and budget considerations.

Please Enjoy SafelyDuring the coming weeks, we will all be socializing with friends and family. Please remember to enjoy the company of acquaintances and loved ones responsibly. If you go out on the town to celebrate, consider designating a driver. We want all of you to arrive back home safe and sound.

On behalf of the entire POA staff, may I extend to you and your families a very joyous and safe Christmas season. A special thank you to the Women’s Club, Avid Gardeners, and POA staff members Charles O'Brien, Larry Turner, and Betsy Weppner for the wonderful job they did decorating the Plantation for the holidays. A special thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who gave of themselves over the past year. It is through these volunteer efforts that Hilton Head Plantation maintains its

Holiday Crime Prevention

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card whenever possible. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm with the strap across your body. Keep a wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not a back trouser pocket.

• Teach your children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if they should become separated in a store or shopping mall. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

Happy Holidays... Art Benoit, Director of Security

Christmas and the holiday shopping season is a peak time for crimes such as home burglaries, thefts, and even muggings. Here are some tips that can help prevent you from being the victim of a crime during the holiday season.

At Home:• Be extra cautious about locking doors and

windows at all times.• Don’t display gifts and other valuables where they

can be seen from a window or doorway.• If you go out in the evening, turn on lights and a

radio or television so the house appears occupied.• If you go on vacation, get an automatic timer

for your lights. Ask a neighbor or trusted friend to watch your house, pick up the mail and newspapers, and park their car in your driveway from time to time.

• Beware of package deliveries where couriers have the "wrong" address. Write down tag numbers of suspicious delivery attempts.

• After Christmas, don’t advertise your new electronics and/or other new valuables that you have just received by putting the boxes out on the curb for the garbage collectors. Break the boxes down and fold them to where the words are on the inside.

Shopping:• Stay alert to your surroundings and the people

around you. If you see people "hanging around" parking garages, parking lots, or the outside of stores, avoid the area. Notify the police or security department.

• Shop before dark if possible. Coordinate shopping trips with a friend if you plan to be out late. Never park your car in an unlit area, no matter how convenient it is.

• Lock your car doors and windows even if you are only gone for a few minutes.

• Keep packages and other valuables out of public view, preferably locked in the trunk.

• Park near streetlights if possible and have your keys in hand when you return to your car. Always check the interior of your car before you unlock the door to get in.

• To discourage purse snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your purchases delivered whenever practical.

Oh, you'd better watch out, you'd better not hide, you'd better fess up, I’m telling you why, cause Harry Claus is making a list and he’s checking it twice. He wants to see who’s compliant and nice...

Flying above the Plantation, I zoom in for a closer look to determine

issues that do not appear just right. I've been clearing the way for Santa and his sleigh on HHP for many years now. I cherish this special time and often swap stories with Santa and his reindeer over hot chocolate

appreciate.

Recapping 2013 is not as easy as one would think. The surge in real estate sales in HHP has made

of new property owners, the POA Service Center has become a rookery of activity seeing to the needs of our new arrivals. We are all doing our best to make them welcome. It’s easy to understand why people are choosing to live in Hilton Head Plantation. The wide range in demographics keeps the staff focused on their mission to work in a cooperative manner with residents. They encourage residents to take a personal responsibility in appreciating the beauty of the plantation, the natural setting, and the wildlife living within their community.

The holiday season is now in full swing and many residents are sprucing up their properties. Keep in mind

moderation. If trimming the tree and decking the halls isn’t your style, why not keep it simple and adorn your mailbox? No ladders to climb or lights to string, but you'll still participate in the theme of the season.

Given the number of new residents, I feel compelled to mention that pets (dogs and cats) need to be on a leash when off your property. Pets also need to display the required ID and rabies tag. And, of course, you are responsible for cleaning up after your pet and disposing of the “leavings” in an appropriate manner. They should be bagged and disposed of with your trash or can be placed in one of the POA trash cans. Pet leavings should not be left on the ground for others to “discover”. They should not be disposed of in the trash receptacles

provided on the HHP golf courses. Although our four

their properties, they are not equipped to pick up your pet’s bags of leavings. And please do not leave your pet’s bagged waste on the Palmetto Electric transformers for others to dispose of. If you recall, last year we dealt with the “Plantation’s Pesky Plastic Cup Caper.” This year I’m trying to solve the “Mystery Bag (Doo) Dropper.” This incident was reported to the POA several weeks ago by a resident who started to notice little green bags appearing on top of utility control boxes. It wasn’t long before others began reporting the same incident. There seemed to be no end in sight. It was suggested that a 10-99 (“be on the lookout”) be disseminated to all Security patrols for the non-compliant Mystery Bag (Doo) Dropper. Residents responded with a call for action and I, your humble avian servant, was enlisted to provide aerial surveillance in an attempt to

vision goggles, and special heron binoculars, I set out to uncover the Mystery Bag (Doo) Dropper. Any support from you, our abiding constituents, will be much appreciated. We will keep you posted on our progress to identify and stop this littering, insensitive, and uncaring dropper of green bags, and you know...doo.

The holiday season comes but once a year; let’s enjoy this time with our family and friends who may be visiting. Guests/visitors are your responsibility; they must comply with the Plantation’s Rules and Regulations, and Code of Conduct for Common Properties. All of our governing Documents can be located on our Website: www.hiltonheadplantation.com.

It’s the season of giving — a thoughtful gift might be to present an honest vendor/contractor with an HHP Yearly Commercial Decal. The POA Service Center offers these

vendor/commercial contractor.

The Plantation has scheduled its Annual Holiday Hayride Tour for Saturday, December 21. Three (3) tours have been scheduled (6:00, 7:15, and 8:30 PM). RSVP to Keriann at 681-8090 to secure your seat. This

(4) Turn off music by 10:00 PM and outdoor lights by Midnight; (5) All exterior holiday decorations are to be put away by Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

MAILBOX DECORATIONS! If you would like, please decorate your mailboxes. These will be fun to view in the daytime, and will also be part of the contest.

Although Plantation residents use their criteria for judging the winners, the POA encourages tasteful, attractive, and charming

decorations. The key is… All things in moderation.

The winners will be announced in the January issue of Plantation Living and on the Website.

Page 8 - December 2013 Lowcountry Nature

Lowcountry Nature: Sweetgum and SycamoreHere are two common and easily recognized trees in Hilton Head Plantation.

Sweetgum ( ), an important commercial hardwood in the Southeast, is also a popular ornamental species, with over a dozen cultivars. Mature trees are tall, stately, and symmetrical, with pointed, star-shaped, glossy green leaves. In the fall, these turn various shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple. Even in winter, when the branches are bare, you can easily spot sweetgums by their hard, prickly seed-balls (each one a cluster of many small, dry fruits) swinging on slender stems. The balls may stay attached to the tree long after the winged seeds have been released, though many also drop off the branches and pile up on the ground. In New York we used to collect bags of “gumballs”, spray them with gold or silver paint, and use them as Christmas decorations.

The tree’s common name, “sweetgum”, and the genus, Liquidambar, refer to the fragrant, resinous secretion that exudes from beneath the bark in response to injury and hardens once exposed to air. Sweetgum resin has been used to relieve pain, to treat rashes and stomach disorders, and to make chewing gum, soaps, and adhesives.

American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) can be

trunk, whose bark is forever peeling off in large, irregular pieces. Native to the eastern and central United States, it’s a close relative of the London plane trees commonly planted throughout England and Europe. Sycamore leaves are large – sometimes 6-7 inches across – with 3-5 lobes, 3 prominent veins, and coarse teeth along their wavy margins. In the summer the leaves are green above, paler underneath; in autumn, they turn yellow, then brownish, and may persist for a while before falling off the tree. Like sweetgum, sycamore also produces seed-balls about an inch across that remain on the branches throughout the winter. These “buttonballs” are aggregates of tiny fruits armed with stiff hairs; eventually the balls fall apart and the tiny seeds are dispersed by the wind.

American sycamores may attain impressive sizes: one tree in Sunderland, Massachusetts, is over 113 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of over 20 feet. It’s estimated to be 350-400 years old.

2013 Women’s Plantation Cup

Unusual weather conditions converted the 11th Annual Women’s Hilton Head Plantation Cup Golf Tournament into a one-day event. Ten two-person teams led by a Club Professional from three golf clubs in Hilton Head Plantation (Bear Creek Golf Club, Country Club of Hilton Head, and Dolphin Head Golf Club) and Golf Club at Indigo Run participated.

second day was played in a better-ball-of-two format at The Golf Club at Indigo Run with the seven lowest net scores for each club counted.

The Country Club team’s long run as Champion ended with Dolphin Head and Indigo Run tied at 483 each. The Country Club came in at 493 and Bear Creek scored 507. The tie breaker was a two person chip-off with the Club Professional

combined to win the chip-off and take the 2013 Women’s Plantation Cup Trophy home to Dolphin Head Golf Club.Dolphin Head’s Diane Lukas and Pat Carroll recorded the Tournament’s low net score of 63. Low net scores for the other clubs were Anita Jewell and Joan Burns (GCIR) 65, Ruth Larson and Loretta Cutrer (CCHH) 66, and Joyce Murphy and Carol Dekany (BCGC) 68.

Dog Club

Hello Dog Lovers! In setting up your calendar for 2014, be sure to note that our next Dog Club get-together will be held on Thursday, January 30, 6:00 PM, at the Plantation House. We are looking forward to a presentation by Daniel Fuller of Urban Search and Rescue K-9. Just two days later, on Saturday, February 1, 11:00 AM, we will travel to Maranatha Farm for a tour of this worthy rescue facility. Both events are open to all residents of Hilton Head Plantation. For details, look to this space in the January edition of Plantation Living.

As the holidays approach, we need to consider our furry friends’ needs as we make plans. If you are traveling with Fido, be sure to secure him in the backseat with a harness that connects to the seat belt, or place a sling-type covering on the back seat that attaches to the front seat headrests, so that a sudden stop won’t

rest areas and provide plenty of fresh water, preferably from the same water source that you use at home. Of course, Fido will feel more secure at your destination if he has his own bed and toys.

If you are entertaining at home, try to consider the anxiety that

tasty morsels of plain turkey or unadorned sweet potato to her regular food. Be vigilant about other foods that can be deadly to dogs such as chocolate, gum and candy, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, avocados, and onions and garlic, to name a few.

As you decorate, make sure that you are cognizant of where your canine companion is at all times. Glass ornaments, electrical cords, batteries, twist ties, wire ornament hooks, and similar items can be attractive but deadly to our beloved pets. And remember, many plants are poisonous to cats and dogs, especially lilies, mistletoe, rosemary, and holly berries. Less toxic are poinsettias, but pet owners should still avoid placing them near their furry friend’s favorite haunts.

By taking a few precautions, you and your beloved pet can enjoy the holidays and look forward to a happy, healthful new year.

A Dog’s Tale

At our well-attended “Everything Dog” event in November, we were joined by precious Abbey, a Cockapoo, who is the beloved companion of Sandy Ploszaj (photo at left). Abbey was rescued by Sandy and now provides a much-needed service as a HosPet with Hospice of the Lowcountry. Abbey accompanies Sandy, a Hospice nurse, on her visits, providing solace to those in need.

HHP Model Train Club

The Train Club met at the Plantation House and had a very full agenda. Doug Volk gave an excellent presentation on the time he spent in England and Wales exploring various aspects of the train world. In Wales, Doug saw many narrow gauge railways

including a cog train which ascended Mount Snowden. The highlight in Wales was a day spent as an engineer on a real locomotive. This is a picture of Doug (left) on

"train guy" attire.

Perhaps the biggest highlight was Doug's description and pictures of the train station in England where the

luggage was on the station platform exactly as seen on TV.

David Argent gave a brief talk on how he found a Lionel 752 City of Portland streamlined diesel loco dating back to 1935 (photo at right). The original manufacturer's packing boxes were also acquired along with the loco and are so rare they may be more valuable than the train itself. The restoration process consisted locating some replacement parts, getting color correct paint, rewiring, and some other minor mechanical repairs with the assistance of Dave Garceau, the "Train Doctor". The train was then run for the group to enjoy on 072 track.

This is a busy time of the year for the Train Club. Various volunteers from the club will be involved in: 1) Plantation House layout "winterization" in November; 2) Kids Holiday Party December 15 from 1:30-2:30 PM. Run the club layout during this

3) Hayride Saturday, December 21 from 6:00-8:30 PM. Run the club layout during this time. 4) Two club members will run some trains at Memory Matters for the clients and staff during December.

The club meets monthly from October to June, 7:00 PM, the second Wednesday of the month, normally at the Plantation House, but we do have

David Argent at 314-409-4304, or Dave Garceau 843-342-6023 or [email protected].

HHPWC's Book Clubs

In 2006, when Jane Rojahn tried to join a book club, there were no openings. She was not the only one who was turned away. Consequently, since there were so many applicants, the Women’s Club asked if she would like to initiate a new club. Of the ten original members,

From September to May this group, called the Literary Ladies, meets every third Wednesday at 2:00 PM with members alternating between the roles of hostess and discussion leader. This group primarily enjoys reading

works as well. The Literary Ladies also collect money to be used to purchase books for children of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs in order to support reading in the community.

For the past few years in December, the ladies hold a poetry slam where they share favorite poems, original poems, or children’s poems, and enjoy a meal in a restaurant.

The May meeting is always held at the home of Jane Rojahn, with each member bringing a covered dish. There they vote on the books for the following year and discuss some short stories read by the members. Consequently, the group reads a total of eight books a year, unless they hold a poetry slam.

The ladies would like to recommend some books that they have recently read: "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson, "Someone Knows My Name" by Lawrence Hill, and "Destiny of the Republic" by Candice Millard. They hope you’ll enjoy them as much as they did.

Caregivers Support Group

Our support group for caregivers in Hilton Head Plantation is growing! What a wonderful group of people who care about helping others. That’s what a mutual self-help

group is all about. You get some time out from your caregiving (respite) to touch base with others, have a laugh, a cry, attend to your needs (feelings, spirit, thoughts, and fears), and you reach out and help another with your experiences. It's always a value to your personal health and wellness, as well as your loved one’s care.

You will learn from a professional facilitator and counselor, Ann Martel, M.S.W., LISW (HHP resident). Ann has over 30 years’ experience in Healthcare, Mental Health Care, Senior/Hospice Care, and private counseling for adjustments related to illness, major transitions in life, stress, grief, and caregiving.

Farmers Club

We had a festive dinner on December 5 with Ray Sprigs music as well as a successful and fun Frogmore Stew in November. This comes from a Gullah town of that name on St. Helena Island. Earl Nagle started this event many years ago, and is still helping our busy food person, Carol Simmons.

Carol is also in charge of ordering and distributing the Vidalia onions – over 2,500 of them this year. They arrived much earlier than usual, and we are expecting a bumper crop. The onions handle light frost very well as do most of the greens, but I like to cover baby lettuce and other small vegetables with a little pinestraw, which I

keep in a stack at my plot for mulching.

Citrus sales started in early November, and will continue through December on Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Please share this with your friends and neighbors. All of our greens and broccoli are bountiful and delicious. A few plots are available for $30 per year plus a $20 membership fee, which entitles you to a 25 by 25 foot plot and nine

According to the planting chart on our Website (www.hhpfarmers.com), lettuce may be planted from December 20 to February 5. It also advises us to plant radishes, turnips, and carrots on January 1, but gives peas only a short period from January 10-20. It actually depends on the weather because if the soil is too cold when you plant, the seeds will just rot, and you will have to plant them again.

Our Board for 2014 consists of Tim Florea, president; Dave Short, vice president; Barbara Nowacek, treasurer; and Cyndy Stanford, secretary. These folks put in a lot of time, so be sure to thank them by volunteering to help when asked.

HHP Big Band

The HHP Big Band swung into transition mode recently when our fearless leader of the past three years, Dr. Ellie Perry (photo at left), announced her

retirement as director. She will be sorely missed! Thanks to her experience and enthusiasm, we grew in numbers and ability, increased our library, and built a strong following among our neighbors and friends. We now have a full complement of talented musicians in all sections, a large repertoire accessible in an organized music library, and amazing community support.

During this transition period, Ellie’s responsibilities as director, librarian, and support booking agent are spread out among the band’s musicians. Al Hodgkins now is managing our library. Lee Burlingame and Dick Hoff are doing a great

job running rehearsals, but both would rather play than direct, so we’re

strong organization and look forward to our scheduled performances for this season.

If you have a burning desire to take on an established swing band, or know someone who would like to do it, don’t hesitate to drop by the Plantation House on most any Monday evening between 7:00 and 9:00 PM or contact Lee Burlingame at 681-4758 or 315-885-8496. We’d LOVE to meet you! Lee is also the go-to person if you’d like to have us play for your event.

HHP Coin ClubThe newly formed HHP Coin Club held its second meeting in October in which several members brought a sample of their collections. The collections included Roman silver denarii that covered the period 250 BC to 325 AD and featured

coins of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, Brutus, Augustus, Tiberius, and other famous (and infamous) Roman emperors. Included in this collection were coins once owned by President John Quincy Adams. A sampling of another collection included proof Walking Liberty silver bullion coins along with a few commemorative silver dollars and a Jamaican coin celebrating the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery. The highlight of the meeting was an outstanding group of British pennies, half-pennies, farthings, and other pieces, all encapsulated in uncirculated states ranging from MS 63 to 67 including proofs. These coins covered the reigns of King George I through Queen Victoria. Gorgeous indeed! It was great to see all of these coins and get some interesting information related to them. The club plans to meet monthly (except December), every third Thursday, 12 Noon - 2:00 PM, at the Plantation House. Members will present some items from their collections and discuss their uniqueness and how they set about obtaining them. There will also be discussions and information sharing for the purpose of enhancing each member's numismatic experience and to develop a club vision. New members are always welcome as well as anyone who may have an interest in this hobby (which includes currency, bonds, stocks, medals, tokens, script, political memorabilia, etc.).

The Avid Gardeners (TAG)

There is a common thread of order and design linking outdoor and indoor “gardening”. Both require forethought in the planning stage. With cooler weather and the coming holidays, The Avid Gardeners have spent more time inside using their talents sprucing homes for the holidays.

Continuing our annual Christmas project, under the direction of Mary Ann Snyder, workshops were held preparing the greenery swags and lights for the neighborhood signs. Everything was in place to enjoy for Thanksgiving.

A holiday dinner and dance was held at the Bear Creek Golf Club as an alternative to our monthly meeting. It was an evening of fun and relaxation shared with spouses and friends.

Looking forward to the new year, in January, following a brief meeting, we will visit Mrs. Madeline Nelson’s orchid greenhouse by the May River. In the meantime, check our Website: www.theavidgardeners.org for gardening tips and other Websites to research.

The Men's 3.5 and 4.0 Interclub matches will be playing through mid-January (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays). Come out and root them on.

We will be resurfacing our tennis courts throughout the month of January. Please be patient during the construction, as this will enhance the courts in every respect.

Also, our "It's that time of year again" letter (Annual Membership Dues), will be coming out this month. We are asking you to get us your dues by January 1, so we can better monitor court time and memberships at the start of the new year.

The 2013 Spring Lake Tennis Committee was able to organize a number of fun events that were very well attended by Spring Lake tennis members as well as many non-members to include, but not limited to a Luck of the Irish Tennis Round Robin and dinner, a Tennis Round Robin and Pizza Party, a Tennis Round Robin and boat cruise, an Oktoberfest Tennis Round Robin and Brats on the grill. Last, but not least the party season concluded with the annual Holiday Party held at the Spring Lake Pavilion with everyone celebrating the Holiday Season in a spirited fashion and taking home some interesting "White Elephant" gifts. Here are your Tennis Social Committee members who worked hard to make your tennis socials as much fun as legally possible: Janice Fatzinger, chair; Pat Kenworthy, secretary; Louise Gorny, treasurer; John Blake and Neil Strohmaier, publicity; Gail Cheaney and Bob Holland, procurement.

If you are interested in joining the committee to help in the planning of our wildly successful events, please contact any one of us. We'd love to have you join our hard working fun loving group. The Tennis Social Committee wishes to thank all the HHP players and guests who attended the many Spring Lake social events in 2013. Because of your active participation the committee was able to purchase 5 new rocking chairs, new seat cushions for the wrought iron chairs and new clocks.

Stay tuned for the January newsletter in which we'll list some of the upcoming 2014 events.

In the meantime, Happy Holidays to all.

Green Thumbers

At the November meeting, Green Thumbers became familiar with Permaculture design and its many principles. Recycling, organic gardening, edible and useful plants, roof water catchment systems, and garden design were some of the aspects shared. At the December meeting, Green Thumbers visited the residents of the Life Care Center, Hilton Head, and hosted a Christmas party for them complete with cookies, apple cider, and holiday stockings stuffed with donated items provided by members. Members and residents were able to truly get into the holiday spirit by playing bingo with a Christmas song theme.

For more greenery “know-how” you won’t want to miss the January meeting on Monday, January 13, 10:00 AM, at the Spring Lake Pavilion. The Green Thumbers will hold their annual joint meeting with the Island Transplants. An informative presentation will be provided by Master Gardener, Myra Stinnett, on gardening in small places. while maximizing stability and safety.

You can perform most yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and relaxation techniques from a chair. Whether you are recovering from an illness or injury, experiencing disabilities, weight challenges,

Recovering from an injury may limit your mobility, but doing Chair Yoga will maintain, stretch, and strengthen your body as you recover. If you have a disability, it will help you manage the disability and keep your body in the best condition possible. Chair yoga increases muscle tissue which helps to raise your metabolic rate. Research has shown that you can slow and even reverse osteoporosis with as little as 10 minutes of yoga practice a day, and studies have shown that the best treatment for bone density is low impact bone strengthening exercises, i.e. YOGA.

The chair is not only used for seated postures, but as a support for many standing postures as well. It also replaces

body, mind, and spirit that keeps the yoga practitioner at the top of his/her game.
