Starting May 1, alumni who graduated between spring 2008 to the present can purchase membership to the newly opened Warrior Recreation Center. But some current and former UH students say graduates, especially those who have paid for the center in their student fees, shouldnt have to pay for access. One of the concerns of the op-erations we have is that the 80,000 alumni would most likely adversely affect the students ability to access the center, which is why we had said basically the alumni that essentially paid for the recreation center fee would have rst priority access to the facility, he said. The alumni who graduated dur-ing this time paid for the center with the mandatory campus center opera-tions and recreation fee, which was approved by the Board of Regents in spring 2008. Prior to that semester, the fee was called the student cen-ter operations fee. The campus center operations and recreation fee rose to its cur-rent $175 amount during a ve-year period, according to Nagata. Cur-rent students will continue to pay this fee every semester.

THE CENTERS ACCESS IBIL ITY During its rst operating week, the Warrior Recreation Center av-eraged about 2,300 people who ac-cessed it each day. During its rst operating weekend, an average of 750 people accessed it each day. According to Nagata, Student Recreation Services, as the facility operator, is still trying to determine practical operating capacity of the WRC. The Campus Center Board will then use that data to make appro-priate policies for the facility. He said the centers re code says it can hold up to 3,000 people. But of course we realize that we cant accommodate all the people in the facility at one time, so were try-ing to nd a balance between whats appropriate in the facility, he said. So were trying to balance out num-ber-wise in the facility to make sure that, of course, were in compliance with the re code and then also were not overcrowding because we reach capacity.

MEMBERSHIP Alumni who graduated between spring 2008 to the present can pur-chase a yearly membership for $300.

One of the recommendations we received was $300 was a num-ber that operation felt would be proportional to the use of the fa-cility that alumni would kind of

justify the cost of a $300 member-ship as well as also making sure that we were covering our costs for the use of the facilities be-cause students pay, Nagata said. We want to make sure it was fair for everyone to pay. But alumni have options when it comes to membership. Six-month, monthly, weekly and daily memberships and passes are also available to them. Some current students, like freshman Janelle Gacula, think it s a good idea to allow that group of alumni access to the center. Freshman Mary Hara thinks this group would impact the cen-ters accessibility but doesnt think

the center is currently crowded. I dont really have a problem with it though, she said. Jack Damuni, who graduated with a bachelors degree in sociology

last December, said he thinks alumni should be able to use the center with-out paying a membership fee. Youve paid your dues there. You should be able to use the re-sources there, he said. We should be able to have access for free or at some discount. Damuni, who works out at the Alexander C. Waterhouse Physiology Research and Training Facility on low-er campus, said many alumni utilize that gym. He said many of those alumni would also come to the Warrior Recreation Center if admission were cheap or free. I d probably come ever y day, he sa id .

According to a UH news re-lease, the Campus Center Board and the Student Recreation fac-ulty and staff from the Office of Student Life and Development will

continue to assess the actual us-age of the facility over the coming semester and, if possible, extend the offer of membership to UHM alumni who graduated before Spring 2008 in the future. If the facility is able to accom-modate the fee paying students, faculty/staff, and spring 2008 current alumni; membership op-portunities may be extended to UHM alumni that graduated prior to spring 2008, Nagata said. According to Nagata, faculty and staff can also purchase a yearly membership for $240. Oth-er options are also available. UH community college and outreach students, NICE pro-

gram, SEED program and East-West Center students and partici-pants can also purchase yearly, six-month, monthly, weekly and daily memberships and passes. In some cases, semester member-ships are also available. Buddy passes will also be available for non-members for $10 a day or $20 a week.

THE CENTERS F IRST TWO WEEKS The centers rst two weeks were originally designated as a trial period for anyone with a valid UH Mnoa ID, according to Nagata. So a student, being fee-pay-ing, of course, would be (able to) access the facility, and then any-one that was faculty and staff or had a valid UH Mnoa ID was able to use the facility for the rst two weeks for free, he said. According to an April 14 arti-cle in Hawaii News Now, alumni werent able to access the facility during its first couple of weeks. I think operationally we had there were some concerns about the capacity of the facility, so op-erationally they decided to not sell alumni memberships at the current time the facility opened up, Nagata said. Campus Center Board then met with Student Recreation Services and Student Life Leadership.

That s when we came around to the, I guess, compromise be-tween the alumni that graduated previously that paid for the facili-ty but also making sure were able to service the students that are currently enrolled at UH Mnoa, Nagata said. He said that prior to that, the Campus Center Board had ap-proved an affiliate membership category, which included alumni. I think we got to recognize the concern from the operation stand point that that may not have been feasible, and we may have, you know, overcrowded the fa-cility so we need to look at that again, Nagata said.

One of the concerns of the operations we have is that the 80,000 alumni would most likely adversely affect the students ability to access the center, which is why we had said basically the alumni that essentially paid for the recreation center fee would have rst priority access to the facility.

Candidates for the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii of ce from the victorious engineer-ing slate allegedly violated election rules during the elections.

The alleged infractions in-clude the illegal distribution of campaign handouts and unoffi-cial ASUH voting drives.

Martin Nguyen, who ran for ASUH president on the Your Voice, Your Vote slate, said in a complaint led on April 16 that candidates who committed these infractions are subject to disquali cation and shouldnt serve in their new posts under ASUH Senate Rule 56.

According to ASUH Senate Rule 56, penalties may range from a written reprimand, a let-ter of apology, loss of stipend, disqualification or a referral to the Dean of Students Office.

According to Nguyens com-plaint, candidates of E-Team 2014 dis-tributed campaign handouts attached to ASUH Grad Test Prep award appli-cations on March 19 at events hosted by the Financial Literacy and Pre-Vet Club, as well as at a Pre-Medical As-sociation general meeting.

Nguyen also accuses E-Team 2014 member Christopher Escalante of abusing his position as chairperson for the ASUH Committee on Under-graduate Affairs to in uence voting.

The ASUH Committee on Undergraduate Affairs, which is the body which dictates ASUH Grad Test Prep Awards, creates a situation whereas applicants feel obliged to vote for Mr. Escalante to better favor their chance of being selected for the ASUH Grad Test Prep Awards, Nguyen said.

Brenden Burk, chairperson of the committee on nance for ASUH, said in a complaint also led on April 16 that he witnessed Escalante handing out purple ASUH Graduate Test Prep Award applications with campaign materials attached to them with pa-per clips on March 19 at Webster Hall. Escalante announced his cam-

paign for of ce while handing out the applications, Burks complaint says.

Nguyen and Burk also accuse the E-Team and the RIO Engi-neers Council at the University of Hawaii of conducting unoffi-cial ASUH voting drives on April 10 and 15 on the second f loor lounge of the POST building.

According to Burks complaint, such polling place was neither sanc-tioned by the ASUH Committee on Elections, nor monitored by a mem-ber of the Committee on Elections.

Burk said that because many candidates of E-Team 2014 are also members of ECUH, it cre-ates a conf lict of interest.

It would be a con ict of interest for (E-Team candidates) to be a part of any decision-making process to establish a polling place via ECUH in the POST Building, he said.

Nguyen echoed Burks complaint. A substantial number of the can-

didates of E-Team 2014 are leaders in the RIO Engineers Council at the University of Hawaii, which awarded engineering students, speci cally, for participating in this unof cial ASUH voting drive, Ngyuen said.

    THE RESPONSEASUH President-elect Stephen

Nishihara denied the allegations toward E-Team 2014.

My integrity and the integrity of the E-Team is solid because we con-ducted our campaign accordingly to the rules, he said. People will see what they want to see, nd what they want to nd. Fact of the mat-ter is that the peoples voices were heard, and their votes were cast.

Nishihara said that because the votes were rati ed, candidates elect-ed to their positions are of cial.

The people ling these com-plaints has the right to do so, he said. If there was no tampering with the voting process/system (hence the rati cation), then the people have spoken their minds and did so in a fair manner.

The Trier of Facts the Chief Elections Of cer (The

    NICHOLAS KAWELAKAI FARRANT

Adapted from last Wednesdays edi-tion of N Iliili Leo Hone, entitled Ka Hoi Ana i Pono

In stark contrast to what it once was, Hawaii is far from sustainable in this era. The construction of each new subdivision and hotel further precludes pieces of this paradise from producing the cultivation it desper-ately needs, and it has imported even more hungry mouths, which the cur-rent infrastructure cannot feed. Despite this current environmen-tal and social tragedy, there exists a hopeful bounty in Hawaiis future: a hope that in many ways echoes the culture of the past.

HLOAS MOOLELO Hloanakalaukapalili, the still-born son of Wkea, Sky Father, and his daughter Hoohkkalani, when laid to rest in the bosom of Papa, Earth Mother, became the rst kalo plant. Hloa, the second son of Wkea and Hoohkkalani, then became the rst Knaka Maoli, and thus the progenitor of the Hawaiian race. The moolelo of Hloa reminds Knaka today of our genealogical connection to the taro plant and of our simple kuleana to mlama Hloa, our older brother the taro plant. In return, we receive his nourishing energy. More and more, Knaka are recognizing the value of a healthy relationship with Hloa. One manifestation of this is the Hloa Challenge, a 90-day commitment to make kalo ones staple carbo-hydrate, as it was for our kpuna. Throughout the challenge, one can eat any fruit, meats and vegetables they desire, but poi, paiai and taro-based foods shall remain their only carbohydrate; rice, potato, wheat and other starches are not allowed.

EATING LOCAL The Hloa Challenge, in many ways, was born out of the kui ai, or poi-pounding, movement, a

grassroots effort to ensure, like the bumper sticker says, a board and stone in every home. This move toward decentralized poi production not only makes such a challenge economically plausible but also encourages a more inti-mate relation ship with ones food versus buying it by the pound. This past year, three girls from Kamehameha High School Kaplama decided to take on the Hloa Challenge as a senior project. Their efforts to fundraise for the kalo necessary for their 90-day ex-perience were noticed by local lm-maker Torry Tukuafu, who was in-spired to share their story with the world through a lm entitled I am Hloa. The lm will follow the girls spiritual journey in forging a stron-ger relationship with Hloa through the 90-day challenge, as well as their physical journey of visiting the vari-ous taro lands and farmers through-out the archipelago. The premise of the film is a call to action for the people of Hawaii. Our perpetual existence on these islands is gravely threat-ened as a result of the cultural clashes of the past two centuries. It is time that we reverse the trends, which have come to de ne our culture. We can now rebuild for the mutual bene ts for both the land and the people. Part of this is a return to the culture of the past, the culture of the umeke kmau, of the papa and phaku, of the and of the ina itself. But this is only part of the so-lution. Let the lm I Am Hloa also inspire those who do not trace their lineage to Hloa to return their hands to the land, for we are all de-scendants of this Earth. It is only through the shouldering of respon-sibility to care for the Earth that we will earn the privilege of its life-giving sustenance.

STETSON Stetson is the only squad inthe six-team field ranked out-side of the top 10, and has onlyfaced one ranked opponent inGeorgia State, splitting the pairof matches. The Hatters (18 -4) are win-ners of the Atlantic Sun Con-ference and seeded last in thetournament. Stetson also qualified a solotandem into the pairs competi-tion, but will be awarded a sec-ond spot if the Hatters advanceto the semifinals of the teamtournament.

Sand Bows ready for national championshipSand Bows ready for national championship Boasting an overall 18-3 record, the Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team brings both momentum and confidence into its first-ever trip to the NCAA Cham-pionships. However, the Bows join a talented contingent of schools, each capable of hoisting the trophy. This has been our goal since day one, head coach Scott Wong said. We

want to be the best for Hawaii. You have to beat the best to be amongst the best. Were going to be competing against five other good teams, and we think were right there where we can compete for a national championship. We always like to know who our enemy is, and these are our five enemies out there. We dont know everything about every one of them, but well be learning a lot. Well be ready.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL The Bows are set to face fth-seeded Florida Interna-tional in their rst matchup of the tournament Friday morning. Like the Rainbow Wahine, this is the Golden Panthers inaugural invitation to the team portion of the tournament, though they quali ed two tandems in the Best of the Rest pairs competi-tion in 2013. The Panthers are an impres-sive 14-2 in dual action this sea-son, however FIU has only faced two top 10 opponents, falling to both No. 4 Florida State and No. 6 Georgia State.

USC Should the Bows defeat FIU, the Rainbow Wahine are set to face off against USC (22-1) a team that has handed Hawaii one of its three losses this season. The Wahine faced the Tro-jans early in the season when UH played host to the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge at Queens Beach. The Women of Troy battled to a 3-2 victory over Hawaii and have been on a tear since. The top-ranked Trojans only loss of the season came from Pep-perdine in their third match of the season, and they closed out their regular season with ve straight sweeps, including against No. 8 Loyola Marymount.

PEPPERDINE In a program that boasts one national championship, one run-ner-up nish and eight All-Amer-ican selections in only three years of competition, the Pepperdine Waves (15-1) are once again a ma-jor hurdle in the tournament. The No. 2 Waves have only felt the sting of defeat once this sea-son, falling to the Trojans 4-1 in March. The Wahine have squared off against Pepperdine twice this season, falling on both occasions in 5-0 sweeps. Joining the Trojans as a top-two seed, the Waves receive a bye into the quarter nals and will face either Florida State or Stetson on Friday afternoon.

FLORIDA STATE No. 4 Florida State (16-1) enters the tournament with only one loss on the season coming from a 3-2 deci-sion against the Trojans in Los Ange-les. But the Seminoles most recently closed their regular-season schedule on a 10-game win streak with most decisions coming in sweeps. Half of UHs No. 1 pair, senior Brittany Tiegs, transferred from Florida State after leading the Semi-noles to a perfect season and a deep run in the national tournament, earning All-American honors in the sports inaugural year. The Seminoles are set to face Stetson in Friday mornings match.
