President’s Message

IthasbeenanhonorformetoserveasBoardPresidentforthepasttwoyears.IcanassureyouthatourBoardofDirectorsiscommittedtohelpingthoseinneedinBeaconFallsandNaugatuck.OursisoneofthesmallestUnitedWaysintheStateofConnecticut,yetwecertainlyaccomplishagreatdeal.Weserveover10,000individualsinourcommunitiesthroughourpartneragenciesandraisefundsthroughemployee contributionsand special events.Thegenerosityof ourdonorsandour event sponsors, thecountlesshoursdonatedbyourvolunteersandthededicationofourpartneragenciesneverceasestoamaze me. This community is truly extraordinary.

CampaignChairAllanMonteiro ledavery successful campaign.He recruited somenewmembers forhisteamandtheyworkeddiligentlytoobtainnewcontributorsandreconnectwithpreviousdonors.WeextendagreatdealofthankstoAllanandhisteamfortheirenergyanddedicationtoourUnitedWay.

OurAllocationsCommittee,ledbyStephenPretto,spentcountlesshoursthiswinterreviewingapplicationsfor funding. Individualmeetingswere heldwith each of our partner agencies to ensure that your dollarsmet the need of ourcommunity.Wearetrulythankfulfortheircommitmentandtimegiventothisimportantprocess.

The Marketing Committee, led by Dorothy Hoff, had another productive year, enhancing the website and Facebook page.Thishardworking committee continues to promote our UnitedWay with informational materials and also focused on UnitedWay’svolunteers,donorsandpartneragencies.Wearefortunatetohavethesededicatedvolunteersworkingwithus.

UnitedWayalsohadaverysuccessfulyearwithspecialevents.TheseeventsgiveUnitedWaytheabilitytoconnectwiththepeopleofourcommunityinadifferentway.TheAnnualCarShowinJuly,sponsoredbyGroundUp,andourGolfTournamentbothsurpassedourexpectations.OurSpecialEventsChair,DonnaAndrew,onceagainoutdidherselfwithKentuckyDerbyDayandtheSalemBusTrip.Botheventswerefantasticandwellattended.TheannualHalloweenGalasponsoredbyFitzpatrick,Mariano,Santos,SousaPC,Morrissey,Morrissey&MooneyandDiversifiedFinancialSolutionshasgrowneveryyearandthecostumesarealwayscreative.Our8thAnnualFestivalofTreeswasheldinDecemberandbroughttogetherbusinesses,schools,agenciesandpeoplebothyoungandoldshowingthetruemessageof“communityspirit”.Thankyoutoallthevolunteerswhohelpmaketheseeventssosuccessful!

We are grateful for the financial support the Naugatuck Partnership for Children (formerly Naugatuck Discovery) continues toreceivefromTheGrausteinMemorialFundandConnecticutCommunityFoundation.ThePartnershipsupportsanumberofprogramsinourcommunitysuchasthePreKKindergartenPeerMentoringInitiative,BreakfastClub(EmpoweringNaugatuckChildrentoLeadHealthyLives),andParentLeadershipTraining.ThecollaborativecontinuestoexploreopportunitiestobenefitallchildreninNaugatuck.

Duringthispastyear,theBoardofDirectorscreatedanAdvisoryBoardwhichisanancillarygroupoftheBoardofDirectors.Theprimarypurposeof theAdvisoryBoard is toprovide theUnitedWayofNaugatuckandBeaconFallswithongoingsupportandincludeabroaderrepresentationofthecommunity.Additionally,theAdvisoryBoardservestoengagethoseindividualswhodesiretomaintaincontactandinvolvementwiththeUnitedWayofNaugatuckandBeaconFalls,yetareunabletoactivelyparticipateinmonthly meetings, and other Director commitments. Members will attend four meetings a year.

AveryspecialthankyougoestoourExecutiveDirectorLisaShappyandFinanceDirectorBethMongelluzzofortheircontinuedcommitmenttoourUnitedWay.

IamsincerelygratefultoallofyouformakingmyexperiencewiththeUnitedWayofNaugatuckandBeaconFallswonderful. IhadtheprivilegetobeAllocationsChairandmeetourpartneragencystaffandclients,headuptheannualcampaignasChairandthehonorofworkingalongsidecaringandtalentedindividualswhocaresomuchaboutourcommunity.Thankyoutoourdonors,corporatesponsors,volunteers,partneragenciesandstaff.LiveUnited.

Mom!Dad!Canyouhelpme?Askids,weweretheonesaskingforhelpcleaningupourroomorwithtrickymath homework, and certainly as parents, we do all we can do to assist our children. Sadly,somecallsdonotreceivesuchimmediateattention.Someproblemsarenotsoeasilyresolved.Fortunately,thoseofuswhoresideinNaugatuckandBeaconFallsliveintownswithincrediblecommunityspirit.TheneedsoffamiliesinNaugatuckandBeaconFallsvary.Callsforhelp,whichcannotsoeasilybeansweredbyimmediatefamily,arerespondedtobyseveralchurch,school,scoutingandcommunitygroups,includingagencieswhichourUnitedWayofNaugatuck&BeaconFallshelpstofund.WhetheritistheAmericanRedCrossafteratragichousefire,LiteracyVolunteershelpingtheunemployedandthosetryingtobettertheirskills,orSafeHavenshelteringabusedwomenandchildren,therearemanyinourareawhoworkorvolunteertomakelifebetterforallofus. � Connecting our residents to essential health and human services through Connecticut’s United Way 2-1-1 call center.

� Over 5,000 calls were received by 2-1-1 from Beacon Falls and Naugatuck residents last year for information on housing, shelter, food, utilities and other financial assistance.

� All decisions about allocations of funds made by local residents and business people who volunteer to serve on our boards!

The Mary H. Connolly Community Caring Award is presented annually to recognize an individual or individuals who have demonstratedoutstandingsupporttotheUnitedWayandtheentirecommunityandwhohavesetthestandardforservicetothecommunity.Our community is honored to present to Jim and Susan this year’sMary H. Connolly Community Caring Award.JimandSusanhavechosenineverywaytomakeNaugatucktheirhometown.TheynotonlyliveandworkintheBorough,butalsospendmany

hours dedicated to making life better for Naugatuck families.
