While growing up, many of us plucked a dandelion, blew on its feathery head, andmade a wish. You may be interested to know that the generic name for dandelioncan mean “disorder remedy.” Individuals suffering from untreated mental disordersare like dandelions that were once in full bloom and have lost their vibrancy. Nolonger feeling productive, happy, or significant, they can languish until someonecomes along and fills them with a breath of hope that gives them the chance tobloom again.

Looking for hope, 2,734 people attended Depression and Bipolar Support AllianceGreater Houston groups 18,767 times in 2014. These remarkable numbers high-light that our compassionate facilitators and supportive peer participants are touchingpeople in fundamental ways that inspire connection, sharing, understanding, andrestoration. We also welcomed 23,601 visitors to our website, which is a respected, regional resource for mental health and wellness. Of these visitors, 70% were new.We steadily continued lifting the stigma and discrimination surrounding mentaldisorders, enhancing group accessibility, and creating environments where peoplecould talk openly about living with depression or bipolar disorder.

This year we will emphasize the importance of suicide prevention. Suicide oftengrows out of a mental illness so severe that the afflicted individual abandons allhope of survival. We will shine a light on this crisis and work to empower peoplewith the knowledge to ask bravely, “Are you contemplating suicide?” Through yourcontinued generous support and meaningful presence in the life of an individualwho is struggling with a mental disorder, you are a part of our journey this year.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Greater Houston can be the sweet breezethat fills individuals with hope and gives them wings to fly. Spreading the word aboutour free support groups is also spreading the word about hope. Doing so may changea life, prevent a suicide, or encourage a first vital step toward mental wellness. Nexttime you discover a field of feathery dandelions, please pluck one, give it a preciouspuff of air, and make a wish that individuals living with mental disorders will be infused with hope and healing. With your help, the dandelion will bloom again.

Sincerely,

Peggy Roe Mary Collins2015 Chairman President/CEO

Dear Friends,

Isn’t it strange how princes and kings,And clowns that caper in sawdust rings,And common people, like you and me,Are builders for eternity?

Each is given a list of rules;A shapeless mass; a bag of tools. And each must fashion, ere life is flown,A stumbling block, or a stepping-stone.

–R. L. Sharpe

Using his tool bag of passion and personal contacts, Gary Levering recruitedfriends and community leaders to form the first Board of Directors of Depressionand Bipolar Support Alliance Greater Houston in 2003. Through his leadership, dedication, encouragement, and enthusiasm, Gary invigorated DBSA and itsmission to provide free support groups to individuals living with, and familyand friends affected by, depression and bipolar disorders in Greater Houston. The active and committed Board of Directors added a professional staff andincreased the program from two support groups in 2003 to more than 70groups in 50 locations throughout Greater Houston in 2014.

Gary was an early mental health pioneer who worked tirelessly to realize hisvision that everyone living with a mental disorder in the Houston area wouldhave access to high quality, knowledgeable, and free peer support. Thanks toGary, DBSA Greater Houston serves thousands of individuals each year whoselives are changed by attending DBSA support groups. The growing numberof DBSA participants, facilitators, donors, partners, and referrals indicates thatDBSA is now a permanent mental health service provider for Greater Houstonand an established, invaluable resource for mental health and wellness.

What could have been a stumbling block became Gary’s stepping stone for the greater good of the Houston community. Gary will be sorely missed for hisgentle sense of humor, wisdom, boundless curiosity, inspirational authenticity, generosity, and loving spirit.

In 2014 DBSA Greater Houston created the Gary L. Levering Endowment to continue Gary’s legacy, provide a foundation for anticipated growth, andsafeguard the free support group program from economic volatility. The Endowment provides sustainability and ensures DBSA Greater Houston’sability to provide an invaluable program for years to come.

Mission MomentI have been battling depression and bipolar disorderfor most of my adult life. For most of that time, Ihave felt compelled to keep this struggle to myself.Even though it dominated my life, I never felt like itwas the kind of thing to share with my friends, familyor anybody else.

I discovered DBSA at a particularly low point in mylife. Ever since that time, I have been grateful for simply being able to go somewhere and share what is on my mind in an environment where I knoweverybody knows what I am talking about and willnever judge me. I also find great benefit not only inlearning from those who have learned to manage theircondition and go on and build great lives, but also inbeing able to support those who are struggling in themoment.

I have certainly been on both ends of the spectrumduring my time in a DBSA support group. ThroughDBSA I have become more comfortable with my condition, more optimistic and open to receiving help through therapy. DBSA also introduced me to an incredibly diverse group of people that I am proudto call my friends. I am a better and healthier personfor having DBSA in my life.

In 2014 Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Greater Houston hosted its thirdannual Help…Hope…Healing Luncheon, a community-wide special event that increasesawareness of depression and bipolar disorders, engages people in an open conversationabout mental health, and raises money for the free support group program.

Terry Bradshaw, NFL legend and Co-Host and Analyst FOX NFL Sunday, spoke candidly about his life living with depression. DBSA was especially pleased to honor theJohn S. Dunn Foundation for its substantial and consistent support of mental health inour community with the 2014 Gary Levering Mental Health Impact Award. PalmettoPartners, Ltd. and The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation were the very generous2014 Speaker Underwriters. Thanks to the superb leadership of luncheon chairs Jackieand Fred Dunlop, honorary chairs Phyllis and Jack Selber, and the Luncheon SteeringCommittee, DBSA raised more than $460,000 for its free support group program.
