2014 ANNUAL

REPORTThe Orthopaedic Trauma Association is

the worldwide authoritative sourcefor the optimum treatment and prevention

of traumatic musculoskeletal injury.

Dear Colleagues, 2014 was quite a year for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association as the organization celebrated 30 years of education, research and advocacy.

Ross K. Leighton, MD,OTA President 2014-2015

From the President

There’s no doubt the OTA is as strong as ever as we continue to advance the care for the injured patient through physician education, research grants and public awareness. As always, the OTA’s primary vehicle for physician education was the Annual Meeting and pre-meeting courses, which saw over 2,000 orthopaedic surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows and industry representatives, travel to Tampa, Florida for the OTA’s premier four-day event. The entirety of the meeting was not solely dedicated to education, however – we managed to find a few hours to celebrate the organization’s 30 years with an incredible reception at The Florida Aquarium and a very dynamic video funded by the past presidents commemorating the history of trauma care as it coordinated with the history of the OTA. In addition to our Annual Meeting, the OTA also hosted three resident courses, a fellows course, Specialty Day at the AAOS Annual Meeting and a series of highly successful webinars. On the research front, the OTA granted more than $660,000 in new research projects, including collaborative efforts with the ACS’s Committee on Trauma and the National Trauma Data Bank. The OTA also initiated a directed topic research grant in partnership with Arthrex, “Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial to Investigate Treatment of Ankle Syndesmotic Injuries.” Several excellent research grant applications were received for this directed topic, and following the OTA Research Committee’s rigorous review and selection process, $100,000 was granted to carry out the 18-month project. Lastly, the OTA continues to increase the public’s awareness of the burden of musculoskeletal injuries through collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. AAOS and OTA released an injury prevention PSA campaign pronouncing “Home Safety is Bone Safety.” The humorous ad with seniors wearing bubble wrap makes light of a very serious issue – “Preventing hip fractures from falls is critical for senior home safety.” The ad can be seen at bus stops, billboards and airports across the country.

Administratively this year marked a great era for the OTA, as we have transitioned our business administration functions from a 3rd party management model, to a self-managed model. This will allow us independence for initiating many more complex IT projects while staying very closely allied with the AAOS on numerous educational courses, as well as participating in Board of Specialties (BOS). Please take some time to read the committee reports on the following pages for a more in-depth view of the organization, its programs and our successes in 2014. This past year was not only exciting for the OTA, it also happened to be a highlight of my own career. Serving the OTA membership and leading the Board of Directors in 2014 was an honor, a privilege and one of the major accomplishments in my career. Sincerely,

Ross K. Leighton, MDOTA President 2014-2015

Mission Statement The mission of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is to promote excellence in care for the injured patient, through provision of scientific forums and support of musculoskeletal research and education of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the public.

Disaster Management and Preparedness

Christopher T. Born, MD2014 Chair

Committee Highlights Disaster Response Course (DRC): • As of 5/1/15, this course has been given seven times. Since its inception in 2011, 395 surgeons have taken the course and 286 AAOS members have registered with the Academy/OTA Responder Database. • The 2014 program in New Orleans had 62 registrants. • The 2015 program in Las Vegas had 32 registrants • Registrants receive 14.75 Category 1 CME Credits sponsored by the AAOS • Faculty also receive CME Credit • Scheduling of additional courses for 2016 and beyond is under discussion. • If the AAOS or OTA are called upon to assist in future disasters, individuals in the database can be more readily connected with on-the-ground disaster response agencies. • The April 25, 2015 earthquake in Nepal allowed for a “beta testing” of the system. The AAOS staff immediately called up the database and communicated with potential NGO partners regarding possible manpower needs. Neither the OTA nor the AAOS have the logistics capacity to mount their own relief efforts. The database is to be used to identify surgeons who have been educated or who have experience working in an austere disaster or humanitarian environment and who might be called upon to assist. • “Blast Injury” and “Basics of Disaster Response (Disaster Primer)” presentations are intended to be included in Version IV of the Residents Core Curriculum for publication in 2016.

• The “Disaster Management Response Guidelines for Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery,” authored by the Disaster Preparedness Committee, has been submitted to JBJS Reviews. • Looking to the future, the Disaster Preparedness Committee is developing PSA’s in relation to “Disaster can strike at any time . . . are you prepared?” The PSAs will emphasize home preparation basics. A series of 4 posters is planned depicting various natural disasters.

Committee Highlights • In 2014, the OTA Research Committee received and reviewed a total of 97 research grant applications for the January 1, 2015 – December 31, 2015 research grant cycle, with $463,926 being awarded to grantees. The second cycle of resident grants will be awarded in March 2015.

• Through a corporate partnership with Arthrex, Inc. the OTA was able to offer a Directed Topic Research Grant, “Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial To Investigate Treatment of Ankle Syndesmotic Injuries.” As a result, an 18-month grant was awarded in the amount of $100,000 to carry out this research.

• The OTA’s commitment to Orthopaedic Research, part of the OTA’s mission, continues to be a high priority, and the BOD again approved a budget of $600,000 for research grant awards for 2014. Since the inception of the OTA Research Grant Program in 1990, OTA has awarded nearly $19 million in clinical, basic science and directed topic research grants.

• Orthopaedic surgeons, patients, and researchers visited Capitol Hill on Thursday, April 3 to raise awareness about the debilitating and costly musculoskeletal diseases and disorders afflicting millions of Americans and emphasize the need for research funding. Advocacy teams urged Congress to appropriate $535.6 million in Fiscal Year 2015 for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), maintaining the amount appropriated in the FY 2012 budget. FY2013 and FY2014 budgets were reduced due to the Budget Control Act, more commonly as sequestration. In challenging economic times, it is imperative to preserve funding.

NEW! Kathy Cramer Memorial Scholarship Award EstablishedThrough a generous donation from the Estate of Kathy Cramer, MD, a new scholarship has been established – the Kathy Cramer Young Clinician Memorial Scholarship Award. The scholarship is in memory and honor of Kathryn Cramer, a dedicated and highly respected orthopaedic surgeon missed by many OTA colleagues.

The Memorial Scholarship Award will support two OTA members as selected candidates each year to attend the ORS/OREF/AAOS Young Investigators Workshop and the AAOS/OREF/ORSClinical Scholars Career Development Program. Additionally, Kathy Cramer Memorial Scholarship Awardees will receive these benefits: • An OTA assigned research mentor, if requested; • Complimentary OTA Annual meeting registration
