It was an “electrifying” summer, with kids of all ages exploring the 2014 Summer
Reading Program “Fizz, Boom, Read!”, and teens enjoying “Start a Reaction!” It
was a summer to remember, where kids channeled their inner scientist with experi-
ments, amazing performers, and science-related prizes to encourage reading. All
ages participated, and discovered that science can be a blast! The strong emphasis
on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) set a framework
for weekly themes. In a nutshell the themes were: force and motion, the senses,
plants, chemistry, animals, magnetism, machines and building, weather, and robots.
The summer reading program consisted of motivation for summer reading, pro-
grams to stimulate reading, and active participation in contests and crafts.

can’t be counted was the joy of dis-
covery that happened often, and the
educational benefits that this type of
programming has provided. 0

Adult Summer Reading
Once again the Library offered a chance for Adults to get in on the Summer Reading
fun…each book a patron read counted as an entry into a random drawing and at the
end of the summer spectacular prizes were given away. There were 1497 entries this
year, an increase of about 12% over 2013’s record breaking participation. The won-
derful prizes were once again donated by generous local businesses.

“The mission of the St. Francis Public Library is to
build community by bringing people, information,
and ideas together in a welcoming environment.”
New Mission Statement: After months of gathering feedback, examining our goals for the future, and focusing
on the needs of the St. Francis Community, the library staff and Board created a new
mission statement (above) and 3-year long range plan. The long range plan can be
viewed on the library’s website.
Children’s Area: Using a combination of donations and other library
funds, the children’s area received a bright new makeo-
ver. The walls were painted blue and
yellow and Trillium Ltd. painters add-
ed aquatic themed artwork. In the fall,
RiverWorks Designs installed our
beautiful new boat bookcase feature.
Everyone is enjoying the cheery new
space.
Learning Connections: In February, the library launched a new literacy/ELL program called Learning Con-
nections. Staffed by volunteers, Learning Connections offers free literacy and English
language help to adult learners. Volunteers are available from 1-3 pm on the 2nd and
4th Saturdays of the month or by appointment.
Laptops: The library purchased 8 laptops that will enable us to offer computer classes in our
program rooms and leave the computer lab open to the general public.
Craft Fair: In the fall, the library hosted its first Craft Fair. While small, there was a good variety
of offerings from the different vendors and the library made a good profit. Many
thanks to the artists and crafter who participated:
Sally Aldrich Anna Passante
Jane Gupton Jane Schneider
Laura Hanzel Kristin Tomaich
Lisa Liban Knit & Crochet Group
JoAnn Loeher
Books & Brew Book Club: We added a new book club to our offerings. This book club is
offered in collaboration with the St. Francis Brewery and Restau-
rant and is hosted off-site at the Brewery. The theme of the books
is The Seven Deadly Sins, to go with the Brewery’s specialty
ales.
