Advocates of Ozaukee recently broke ground on the new Center of Strength, a client counseling center that will be ADA accessible. While Advocates is still seeking funding to finish up the $210,000 campaign the early spring weather made it a perfect time to get the much needed space underway. At the groundbreaking are (l to r) Donald Stauss, Architect, Jack Dahlman, Dahlman Construction, Barb Fischer, Advocates Executive Director, Jim Johnson, Sheriff and Advocates Board Member, Rebecca Arndt, Advocates Board President, Lee Schlengvogt, Ozaukee County Board Chair and Tom Meaux, Ozaukee County Administrator. THANK YOU As I reflect on 2014, I wonder how we should measure success when we are working to end domestic and sexual violence. We didn’t end it. Nonetheless, we had a successful year. Advocates of Ozaukee made a difference. We housed victims, we educated students and the community, we advocated for those who needed it, and we supported and empowered clients to move forward stronger and more self-sufficiently. Yes, it was a successful year. Our success is driven by the passion of the staff. I am so immensely proud of the work they do. Each one cares and they all work relentlessly to provide peace, comfort, empathy, encouragement and direction. I am continually amazed at the spirit and determination with which they serve the organization, the community and the clients. The tenure is a testament to the leadership and the support they show for each other as this is not an easy industry to operate in. The staff is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers in the board of directors. It’s easy and fun to lead this spirited group of community members. I am grateful for the active participation of each of them. It’s a diverse group that brings a variety of skillsets and ideas to help us maximize our effectiveness. The volunteers for Advocates are tremendous. It’s heartwarming (and really helpful) that so many folks step up to volunteer – paint, run an errand, donate a needed item or two, fundraise, and so on. They are a terrific well-oiled machine, each playing a part serving our organization in an effort to help others and end domestic and sexual violence. Financially we were successful also. We are so grateful for each donor, foundation and grantor that assists us in fulfilling our mission. In 2014, we stayed within budget and began raising money to build an addition. The addition is necessary in order to have room for the growing number and size of group meetings held at the shelter. I look to 2015 with excitement and gratitude. It is the 35th anniversary of Advocates of Ozaukee proudly and humbly serving Ozaukee County and the surrounding areas. In addition, we continue to raise funds and the construction will begin on the addition. Our commitment to victims and the community is as strong as ever. Thank you to the staff, the board, donors, and our volunteers. You define our success. Advocates of Ozaukee recently broke ground on the new Center of Strength, a client counseling center that will be ADA accessible. While Advocates is still seeking funding to finish up the $210,000 campaign the early spring weather

made it a perfect time to get the much needed space underway.

At the groundbreaking are (l to r) Donald Stauss, Architect, Jack Dahlman, Dahlman Construction, Barb Fischer, Advocates Executive Director, Jim Johnson,

Sheriff and Advocates Board Member, Rebecca

Arndt, Advocates Board President, Lee

Schlengvogt, Ozaukee County Board Chair and

Tom Meaux, Ozaukee County Administrator.

THANK YOUAs I reflect on 2014, I wonder how we should measure success when we are working to end domestic and sexual violence. We didn’t end it. Nonetheless, we had a successful year.

Advocates of Ozaukee made a difference. We housed victims, we educated students and the community, we advocated for those who needed it, and we supported

and empowered clients to move forward stronger and more self-sufficiently.

It’s heartwarming (and

really helpful) that so many folks step up to volunteer – paint, run an errand, donate a needed item or two, fundraise, and so on.

From a Grateful Client...“Even though I know the worst is probably yet to come, I wanted to say Thank you.

It is funny, the ebb and flow of life and the direction it takes. After 6 long years of this relationship all it took was one caring smile, one compassionate face, one stranger saying –you are worth more-to tip the balance so drastically that I knew-KNEW with certainty that the words she spoke were true, that yes, I am indeed worth more than this. That, I think, is the beauty of women. Women are powerful creatures with compassionate souls by nature I believe, and a group of caring compassionate women is a force to be reckoned with-evident everyday by the work that you do for others.

Words seem trivial and small in this instance, it is often hard to express the feelings of the heart. Thank you for being the light in the dark, one of which I am sure I will need in the coming weeks. I cannot adequately express my gratitude.” :)
