ABC’s Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) recognizes the efforts of ABC members that strive to achieve effective safety practices at their firms and provides contractors with a tool to objectively evaluate their safety programs, policies, procedures and training. Using a form provided by ABC National, contractors evaluate their programs and receive certificates for qualifying at either the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond levels. Contractors can use the one year STEP certification as a business marketing tool and to improve safety at their firms. Featured at right are our 2014 MN/ND ABC STEP Winners.

4 2014 ABC MN/ND CONSTRUCTION AWARDS

2014 Annual Meeting Award WinnersThe MN/ND ABC’s awards program was created to recognize members who are dedicated to improving their business, customer service and community through determination and hard work. Members have been nominated by their peers and winners were selected by the Business Development Committee using specific criteria for the following categories:

It is rare when an employee nominates their own employer, but explains why the committee was moved when receiving this nomination by Eric George, Site Superintendent:

Shingobee has always had a strong commitment to their clients and their employees. Starting with Gae Veit (founder) and continuing with Keith McDonald (Owner, CEO) Shingobee’s Values of integrity, honesty and trust have been instilled throughout the entire company. At Shingobee, you can feel that there is a genuine concern for both their employees and their clients. I feel that the clients see this as well, due to the fact that we have numerous repeat projects with the same owners. Shingobee is committed to long-term relationships.

Shingobee has an exceptional safety program that they are always working to improve, from our weekly toolbox talks all the way up to having OSHA consultations on the jobsites. Shingobee has always provided their employees useful and meaningful safety training in the past, and they are committed to continuing training in the future.

Shingobee is very committed to technology in the workplace. Shingobee provides their employees with the latest technology, so that we can easily communicate with Architects, Engineers, Owners, and each other. Shingobee also provides their employees with technology training, whether it is computer classes for Microsoft Project or online project management software training. Shingobee supports their employees, knowing that they are contributing to the company’s success.

Shingobee is also committed to our subcontractors’ success. Shingobee knows that if they succeed, we all succeed.

Shingobee is a very giving company. The ownership has contributed to many organizations and charities over the years, supporting employees who are dealing with medical

issues, supporting their children by contributing to their athletic associations, and so on.

Shingobee is also about family. They have a picnic in the summer every year that all employees and their families are invited to. It is a very nice get together, which allows us to see our coworkers and meet their families. In addition, Shingobee has two vacation homes that are available for use by employees. Shingobee emphasizes the importance of rest and relaxation with family, and they provide the opportunity for each employee to use these vacation homes. It is one more example of how Shingobee cares for their employees.

I learned something from Shingobee early on, and that is to “Lead by example.” I feel I have learned many things from others at Shingobee that have done this, and I, too, lead by example in both my work environment and my personal life as a result. For these reasons and more, ABC would like to present Shingobee as our 2014 Construction Company of the Year.

Construction Company of the YearShingobee

have received the 2014 Associate of the Year award because of their dedication to the association through participation, sponsorship, and leadership. Michelle participates in both the Legislative/PAC committee and Business Development committee, and Max serves on the Membership committee. Their financial planning team at Mid American Financial Group sponsors the Snack/Picture Hut at the annual golf tournaments, providing photographs for the foursomes, cheering on players, and providing beverages to thirsty golfers. They hosted a local happy hour at their office in Minnetonka and also conducted a Breakfast & Education seminar jointly with a fellow CPA firm member, DS&B, on the crucial topic of attracting and retaining key employees.

Mid American’s mission is to help busy ABC professionals and businesses make deliberate, conscious decisions about their financial strategy that not only is tailored to their unique needs. If Michelle and Max haven’t met you personally yet, they will soon. Mid American cherishes their involvement with the ABC organization and look forward to many more years of serving its members. Congratulations to our 2014 winners, Michelle Moser, Max Stowe and the entire team at Mid American Financial.

Penny has been a stalwart member of the Legislative and Political Action Committees. Penny is one of our most dependable members of the committee, always helpful in her comments and questions for the group. Penny is presently the Mirror & Shower Door Department Manager for Dorglass, Inc. Her job responsibilities include direct selling to the customers, ordering material and coordinating with the installers. She is also acting Safety Director at Dorglass, Inc. No one had assumed this role when she came to Dorglass 7 years ago. When working with a product such as glass, safety is all out important. Penny hold

Dorglass to a high standard and in compliance by holding regular safety meetings and toolbox talks, updating safety manuals and records, as well as filling out the ABC STEP award – which helps evaluate where they are on safety. As an employee, Penny is open to always step up when a need arises no matter the challenge. She is a great person that flows where she is needed without being asked and is a leader by example. For her commitment to the industry and service to ABC, we are proud to present Penny Lindbloom of Dorglass, Inc. with the 2014 Construction Woman of the Year.

Steve has been an incredible person to work with in ABC’s workforce development mission. Steve is the Vice President/Operations Manager for A.B. Systems Inc. in Rochester, MN and has been with the company for

25 years. In 2011, he joined the ABC Board of Directors and is currently serving as the Vice Chairman. In 2016, he will be serving as Chairman. Not only is he on the board, he is also on the ABC Education Committee. He is always willing to help with committee meeting, donate his time to career fairs and offer insight into how to steer ABC’s Mission in the right direction. Not only does he want his company and the industry to grow, but he wants to make sure his company is the safest it possibly can be and uses ABC tools to make sure he is doing just that. His dedication to ABC and the industry’s mission to bring more individuals into the construction trades should be showcased and that is why we would like to present Steve Knode with A.B. Systems for the ABC Member of the Year.

project: EI MicrocircuitsCategory: Industrial Construction,

Brennan Construction was awarded the contract to build the third location for EI Microcircuits. The 35,400 square foot project would need to be completed on an extremely tight timeline to ensure that the rapidly growing EI Microcircuits would be able to take possession of the project on time so as not to delay customer orders. One hurdle that Brennan Construction encountered while creating a timeline for the project was the need for trades to be able to work and have access to the site while Wells Concrete was working to erect the walls of the

building. After working closely with all of the trades to streamline the timeline and identify safety concerns, it was decided that all trades would be able to work so long as they maintained a 100 foot clearance around Wells Concrete. Another important item was keeping costs in check. Through the duration of the project Brennan Construction held weekly meetings with both subs and owners to identify savings opportunities. Through constant communication and a focus on value engineering with both subs and owners Brennan was able to complete this large scale and complicated project on time and within budget.

Greystone Construction Companyproject: Koda Energy Fuel Delivery SystemCategory: Industrial Construction,$1-5 Million

The Koda Energy Fuel Delivery System project was a unique, fast-track general construction opportunity. It was the result of an emergency plant shutdown on April 25, 2013, when a spark set off a dust-related explosion resulting in a fire that destroyed two silos, a bucket elevator and a fuel truck dump building. Greystone Construction was brought in immediately after the explosion and worked with Barr Engineering on design.

Instead of rebuilding the plant as it was originally designed, Koda Energy decided it was necessary to design a brand new biomass fuel delivery system with a commitment to improved safety and redundancy.

Necessary improvements included a new fuel handling system with a larger dust collection component, dustless loading spouts, infrared cameras to detect hot spots, fire sprinklers, suppression systems, chemical and mechanical deflagration isolation systems and deflagration venting in parts of the fuel system that dust is inhibited.

A deadline was established that allowed Koda to re-open as quickly as possible. Building foundation work began in October 2013 and Greystone was required to complete in less than 4 months, ensuring the plant would re-open in the beginning of February of 2014.

The project required the perfect combination of efficient construction and innovative design which included improved safety features, process redundancy and additional fire protection. The job presented many challenges, including a design that incorporated existing buildings and equipment, a firm completion date and unforeseen weather conditions.

Due to the excellent collaboration between the owner, designers and Greystone Construction, Koda Energy re-opened its new biomass facility with improved safety, reduced particle emissions, increased reliability and a more efficient fuel unloading system only four months after foundation construction began. Despite the challenges in construction, compressed schedule and weather, our tenacious attention to detail and critical thinking resulted in a successful project.

project: Spectrum High School Sixth Grade Education Center & GymCategory: Institutional Construction, $1-5 Million

Erickson Builders & Co., Inc. provided design build and general contracting services for the 23,874 square feet transformation of the shell of a vacant warehouse building into an education center and gymnasium for Spectrum High School.

Spectrum High School is a public, college prep charter school located in Elk River, Minnesota. Elk River is a rapidly growing northwest suburb of the Twin Cities.

Spectrum High School’s main campus for grades 7-12, which was built three years ago, is located a block down the street from their new Sixth Grade Education Center and Gym location.

The original design for this facility was planned as retail or office condo sections in the front portion of the space with warehouse space at the back side of the office. After 8 years in existence this warehouse had over half of the space vacant and had never been built out. Spectrum purchased ten “condo” sections of this building in which to use for the Sixth Grade Education Center and Gym as added space for its high school campus just down the block.

The design intent was to create classrooms for approximately 125 sixth grade students, a reception area with administrative offices and a conference room at the front of the school building, a ‘warming kitchen’, storage, janitorial closets, a music room with sound proofing wall design, a common’s area for lunches and other organized activities, a staff lounge, restrooms, a maintenance area, a gymnasium, locker rooms, and a weight room for athletic strengthening and conditioning. With the addition of the new gymnasium, multiple sporting events or other school events can now be shared between the larger gym at the existing building and the new gym at the Sixth Grade building. The gym will also support volleyball and basketball activities.

Marcus Constructionproject: Central Minnesota Christian School

Category: Institutional Construction, Over $5 Million

In the small rural community of Prinsburg, MN with a population of 497 is where Central Minnesota Christian School (CMCS) is located. However, this project was not just another small town construction project¹ but rather a lifetime worth of friendships, a foundation built on generation after generation, a true testament of faith and the rally within this community. Prinsburg is also where Marcus Construction founder Carl Marcus raised his family and his children attended CMCS and where our Marcus Construction story began in 1956, until our move to Willmar, MN in February 2011. Needless to say, both this project and this community have a significant place in our heart and our history.

The new facility boasts 78,000 square feet that will be able to maintain and sustain a growing student enrollment for CMCS. The construction was split into three phases over a two-year schedule in order to keep the school operational during the school year. Some of the highlights include a two-level high school with single-level athletic facility, an admin area with a view of the main entrance, and the dual-purpose cafetorium with 26-foot high ceilings and has a beautiful glass curtain wall.

After years of careful planning, combined with a trusted general contractor and a dedicated community, CMCS is home to a 21st Century learning environment, whose overall mission is to equip their students for lives of service. We¹re proud to have helped build that environment and make an impact on students for generations to come.

InSTITuTIonAl ConSTruCTIon

Throughout the entire project duration we used our wide range of in-house and onsite capabilities to perform extra tasks necessary to complete the project. Whether it was designing the CMCS lighted monument sign or assisting in overhauling the entire campus technical infrastructure, each piece had significant meaning to Marcus Construction.

Municipal Builders Inc.project: Fridley Filter Split ProjectCategory: Public Works/Environmental, $1-5 Million

Municipal Builders, Inc. is a general contractor specializing in the construction of Water Treatment Plants in central Minnesota for the last 21 years. The construction of the Fridley Filter Plant Split Project was the second of three concurrent projects Municipal Builders completed for the City of Minneapolis at their main filter plant.

The Fridley Filter Plant currently serves over half a billion residents in Minneapolis and the surrounding metro suburbs including the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. It is the largest capacity water treatment plant from Milwaukee to Denver.

Much of this 88 year old water plant has not been updated for many years. In order to prepare for these improvements it was necessary for the water flow through the plant to be split thus allowing half of the filter plant to remain in operation while the other half is being renovated. This “Split Project” was designed to accomplish this splitting of the water flow.

A complete shut-down of this large facility was required in order to accomplish this splitting of the water flow thru the plant. The City of Minneapolis had not performed a shut-down at this filter plant for a duration of this magnitude since the 1970’s; they were very apprehensive about being able to meet water demand while this plant was out of service. The City required an emergency plan be in place to evacuate all areas within 72 hours if they required the plant to be put back in service in case of an emergency situation.

The Split Project consisted of constructing approximately 500 linear feet of new concrete dividing wall within existing water conduit channels, structural rehabilitations and repairs to various parts of the building, modifications to existing chemical feed systems, installation of various large manual and motorized slide gates, installation of large stop-log gates and the complete removal of coagulation basin No. 5. Three months of intense scheduling and coordination helped to ensure minimal interruption to plant operation.

Congratulations Municipal Builders, Inc! we were pleased to work with you on this project.

Nor-Son, Inc.project: Nor-Son Metro Office RenovationCategory: Renovation, $500,000 - $1 Million

Nor-Son, an integrated consulting, design and construction services firm, decided to expand services to the metro market and renovate 4,500 square feet of existing tenant office space above iconic Sunset’s Restaurant (now CoV) in Wayzata, MN. The goal was to create a full functioning, modern and technologically advanced office space to accommodate group collaboration yet maintain as much of the existing structure as possible.

The primary challenge was working above a fully operational restaurant open seven days a week from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM during a peak summer season on Lake Minnetonka. Site mobilization, with particular focus on safety and disruption avoidance, were ongoing concerns throughout the construction to plan work around Sunset’s existing operations. Located in the heart of downtown Wayzata, coordination of materials and deliveries were timed to avoid Sunset’s high traffic periods.

The group office design was developed to maximize the number of work stations with minimal demolition. Space was economized to maintain as much existing office space as possible to value-add design and finishes to the stairwell entrance. Only one wall was removed to enlarge the main conference room. Arched openings were cut between four existing offices to create an open, group office space at minimal cost.

The value saved was used for the new stairwell entrance, built of reclaimed hickory, custom colored and textured cement, Valders stone and custom forged steel. The stairwell and main entrance to the office is a true work of art, reflecting the company’s motto, “Wood, Stone & Steel are our Materials, but Comfort is our Business.”

Steven’s Construction Corp. project: Brightondale Assisted CareCategory: Renovation,$500,000 - $1 Million

Stevens Construction Corp. provided pre-construction and general contracting services for the complex renovation of the Brightondale Assisted Living facility located at 2700 Rice Creek Rd in New Brighton, Minnesota. Fully functioning and occupied at the time of the remodel and due to the sensitive nature of the residents, the project required careful pre-planning and coordination between all team members involved and was essential to the success of the project.

The project consisted of several components including upgrading the main common areas of the facility, such as the lobby and reception area, dining room, multi-purpose room, MC dining area, offices, and salon, in addition to numerous living units, among other areas. Divided into 5 separate phases, each phase involved the relocation of residents and staff while providing sufficient temporary facilities set up in order to limit the disruption to their normal day-to-day routine and operations.

With Owner budgetary concerns at the forefront, Stevens used a Value Analysis approach which was established during the pre-construction phase. The Value Analysis was generated and defined by the Owner, Architect, Contractor, and other design team members, and allowed Stevens to not compromise quality, while adding all of the Owner’s desired improvements which allowed the project to stay in a position to move forward with no delays. In the end, the construction efforts did not have an added cost change and actually allowed the contract value to be less than the original cost, which resulted in a deductive change order at the completion of the project.

Stevens Construction feels very fortunate and proud to be part of a project like Brightondale that provides a comfortable environment and facility for people that need assistance. Through the professional and conscientious efforts of all team members, the staff’s work environment and the resident’s lifestyles have substantially improved with the new upgrades granted to this facility.

project: University of North Dakota Gorecki Alumni CenterCategory: Mechanical Commercial, Over $1 Million

Deemed the state’s first building, and the nation’s first university alumni center, to achieve LEED Platinum certification – the highest level of energy efficiency a building can attain. The Gorecki Alumni Center has surpassed benchmarks in its first year of operation by reducing energy and saving heavily on costs. The center is the realization of a dream and the hard work of the spirited alumni, with one vision: to create a building that linked UND’s storied past to optimism for a bright future – all the while designing it to be the most energy- efficient building ever constructed in North Dakota. Custom Aire, Inc., the project’s prime mechanical contractor, teamed up with subcontractors and fellow ABC members to complete this project successfully under the demanding schedule required and the strict green guidelines necessary to obtain LEED certification.

The mechanical system included the geothermal HVAC system, a plumbing system focused on water conservation, a high- efficiency natural gas water heater, and a DDC temperature control system. The complete building fire protection system was designed per NFPA 13 comprehensive requirements, including sprinkler system design, installation, and testing of the hanging, bracing, and underground piping systems. In addition, Custom Aire also produced HVAC and plumbing work for the addition of a complete full- service kitchen. All of the above contributed to the project earning LEED Platinum certification.

project: Sanford Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MNCategory: Electrical Commercial, Over $1 Million

Willmar Electric Service provided electrical contracting services to help construct the new Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN. Willmar Electric diligently partnered with the other trades to effectively build a facility that met the needs of the community. During this process, over 210 miles of electrical wire was installed – this distance is just shy of the distance from Willmar, MN to Thief River Falls, MN. The beautifully designed Classic Collegiate Gothic style welcomes you whether you enter through the clinic or the hospital.

You can see the attention to detail throughout the facility – including the light fixtures. Advanced technology is now available to the doctors to further meet the needs of their patients. The community is now able to enjoy a variety to medical disciples under one roof, instead of traveling to different parts of town to multiple buildings to reach optimal health results. Through constructing the new 136,000 square foot medical facility, Sanford was able to reach its ultimate goal: create a state-of-the-art medical facility that provides the technology needed to meet the (medical) needs of Thief River Falls, MN and the communities that surround it.

project: Barnes County North SchoolCategory: Electrical Commercial, $1-5 Million

The Barnes County North School brought three existing schools under one roof in a new Pre-K-12 school located outside of Leal, ND. The 85,000 square foot facility was designed to handle up to 500 students, although it currently serves just over 300 students from a large, primarily rural, geographic area.

The $14.5 million project has a central commons area, with a stage and cafeteria seating, which can be used for school and community theatre performances, graduation ceremonies and public meetings. Two wings extend out from this central area, one containing the Pre-K-8 classrooms and the other containing the high school students.

The project location was a considerable challenge. Bergstrom Electric crews had to drive 90 miles to the site every workday from their Fargo office and warehouse. Cell phone service was unreliable onsite and there was no shelter to speak of, as the project location was in the middle of a bean field.

The winter season was unusually harsh in 2012/13 and the general contractor was delayed in building the block walls. Rough-in took additional time, as crews fought cold temperatures and high winds, which blew the temporary shelters down so there were snowdrifts inside the building as Bergstrom Electric crews attempted to do rough-in.

The project included installing a 480 volt 3-phase service, 3 switchboards, 3 distribution panels, 21 subpanels, 82,000 feet of conduit, 300,000 feet of wire, 950 light fixtures, a fire alarm system with 3 relay panels, an upgraded security system, and wireless access points throughout the school.

There were 56 change orders to the project, including an upgrade in the planned security system, made as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December of 2012.

The project was completed in mid-November of 2013.

project: Carpenter’s PointCategory: Residential, $1-5 Million

Paris meets Wayzata. After living in and falling in love with France, the homeowners came with a strong vision and passion for design as well as thousands of photographs, Parisian relics and collected works of art from their time abroad. European Immigrants hand crafted the iron railings to resemble Parisian streetscape. In typical French Flair, Nor-Son and the homeowner boldly merged Medieval and Baroque lines inspired by the Musée de Cluny in the custom carving of the fireplace.

Carpenter’s Point veers from the typical ‘open concept’ floor plan by introducing grand formality. Strong symmetry, elevated ceilings, layers of enameled millwork, stately doors, antique glass cabinets and rustic oak finishes enhance the concept to a design that creates an identity unseen in the Minnesota market. The Nor-Son team brought high design and high-performance construction together to provide a legacy for the homeowner that was featured on Midwest Home Magazine’s Luxury Home Tour. Traditionally a home of this size and scope would take an average of 8-9 months to build; the professionals at Nor-Son completed this project in just 6 months. Despite the team’s diligent preparation

and attention to maintain workflow, an unseasonably cold winter and record rainfall spring were constant threats to the schedule. Nor-Son and subcontractors pulled together to complete the home on time and within budget. The Paris in Wayzata home was honored to be the highest visited home on the tour.

project: Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, Terminal 2 CheckpointCategory: Specialty Construction, Less than $1 Million

“Starwheel: Maps, Metaphors and Cairns for the Journey” is a 16-color epoxy terrazzo mosaic floor design for the north end of the Humphrey Terminal (Terminal 2 / Checkpoint 1) at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The terrazzo mosaic was a publicly funded project, but was commissioned by The Airport Foundation MSP. This art project was designed, sampled, and completed in 60 calendar days, a feat nothing short of amazing.

The design for the new 27,000 square foot Terminal 2 / Checkpoint 1 terrazzo floor evolved from contemplating the function of an airport and the nature of travel. This terrazzo mosaic floor reflects the beauty and diversity of the Minnesota landscape and the historical movement of people across these ecotones.

Tall grass prairies are represented by the imagery of flickering movement. These are shown with thin 16-gauge divider strip on both ends of the design which appear and disappear into the dark sea of blue and yellows as you walk across the floor. The navigational waterways are evoked through the large abstract depiction of a canoe’s ribs, thwarts and inwales. Numerous silver-coated, mirrored and mother-of-pearl shell pieces in the

floor are meant to evoke the reflection of stars on the surface of the water.

To convey a sense of navigation and discovery, the image of an astrolabe which is set to the exact latitude for this section of the airport has been included. The Roman numerals tell another story of time and time-keeping which is ever present in airport travel itineraries. Other directional and wayfinding markers are layered into the design. It connects the imagery to the material in a way which is highly unique to most terrazzo art floors.

As passengers and visitors pass through Terminal 2 / Checkpoint 1, Starwheel is meant to connect their own travels and adventures in Minnesota and beyond to this larger movement of history and discovery.

“It was an honor to be part of this beautiful work of art that so many people get to experience as part of their journey,” said Greg Grazzini, President of Grazzini Brothers.

project: Soo Line Building City ApartmentsCategory: Specialty Construction, Less than $1 Million

The Soo Line Building is a 100 year-old office building that was converted into luxury rentals in the heart of downtown Minneapolis’ Central Business District.

This historic building, whose main attraction is the spiral staircase leading to the second floor and skyway, is now the ultimate urban address featuring 254 luxury apartments. The residential community is conveniently located near restaurants, a light rail transit system, culture, entertainment, shopping and is directly connected to the Minneapolis Skyway.

In addition to the world-class amenities and services, the look and feel of Soo Line Building City Apartments’ interior is that of a luxury, boutique hotel. Many of the original details were refurbished including the three-story central spiral floating staircase anchoring the spacious lobby.

Grazzini Brothers craftsmen’s attention to detail achieved the highest level of aesthetic finish to the lobby and grand staircase. This project consisted of roughly 7,500 square feet of poured multi-level geometric terrazzo floor designs including, ramps, stairs, and elevators. One of the biggest challenge was maintaining the integrity of this historic building. Samples were required for each type, material, color, and pattern and accessory showing the full range of color, texture, and pattern variations expected. Over 35,000 pounds of marble aggregate was used on the beautiful multiple monochromatic designs, which make up the lobby floor. Approximately 3,000 linear feet of straight divider stops and over 1,700 linear feet of radiuses divider strip

was used to achieve the beautiful design on the main lobby floor. This is just one mile of divider strips.

“I have always admired the craftsmanship and architecture of this building, so to be included in this project was a privilege and an honor for me and the company,” said Greg Grazzini, president of Grazzini Brothers.

project: MN Correctional Facility, St. CloudCategory: Roofing, Less than $1 Million

Horizon Roofing, Inc. continues to grow in many aspects, including taking on projects with new difficulties and requirements. The St. Cloud Correctional Facility was no exception. This project had many layers of difficulties.

Due to its complexities, although only 300 square feet of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) roofing and 3,300 square feet of standing seam steel roofing, this project had a price of $90.00 per square foot. Typical projects have a price of approximately $9.00 per square foot. Asbestos removal, security precautions and time were large challenges of this project. To finish the project, there was a catwalk system installed over the metal panel roof system. This was designed for the prison guards and maintenance personnel to utilize and to protect the roof from falling ice. All work was completed in the inmate court yard areas.

The St. Cloud Correctional facility was built in 1889, and is the oldest facility in the Department of Corrections’ system. This facility services as the intake facility of the MN Department of Corrections. This is where offenders are processed into the system and evaluated. The St. Cloud Correctional Facility is also home to the oldest quarry in Minnesota.
