service Learning creates environ-ments where people are exposed to realities in our world, gain

a deeper understanding of how our story intersects with others’, and take a next step by partnering with the work God is doing around us. Open Door also relies on partners to connect us to people and places that may seem worlds away and lead us in the journey of learning more about God, others, and ourselves by serving. To do this, we look for people and organizations who align with our mission and values and who are partnering with the work God is doing in our world.

TrEEhOuSE You haven’t heard of Fernando, but long time Open Door attender Scott Voltrauer will talk your ear off about him.

Fernando graduated from TreeHouse in August 2013. Scott has worked at TreeHouse since before Fernando was born. Years of bullying had taken their toll on Fernando. For months, he sat silently in the front row, barely making eye contact. Fernando has struggled with a lot over the last few years: layoffs and unemployment in his family, a foreclosure and two forced relocations, car accidents, injuries, and deaths in the family. TreeHouse has helped Fernando to become a resilient young man. Fernando was given service opportunities, taught leadership skills, and he accepted leadership responsibilities. TreeHouse has helped him establish a meaningful personal relationship with God.

Fernando had been a D-student, and was heading towards dropping out of school. Since his involvement with Scott and TreeHouse, Fernando has raised his GPA a full grade and a

This is the story of an unnamed student that Nick knows and loves:

“Growing up for me was a little rough. I spent most of my childhood trying to be an adult. My dad is an alcoholic and my mom is really broken. I have some good memories mixed in with mostly bad memories. Some of those bad memories were my parents fighting, the police calls to our house and constantly having to choose sides. The most traumatic memory I have happened when I was in sixth grade. At age 11, I was kidnapped and raped. This experience left me feeling ashamed, broken and wanting to hide it from other people. I knew who God was but I had a really hard time understanding how this so called “loving God” could let something like that happen to me. In seventh grade, I started going to TreeHouse. At first, I thought it was really weird. Everyone was honest, the staff was overly happy, and they were constantly talking about God, which I didn’t really care about. It took a little while, but I soon got comfortable enough to open up. In my family

half. He has become a goal-oriented young man with a vision for the future. Fernando recently began studying at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Recently, Fernando was selected to be one of the chefs for a new restaurant that opens this month in Edina.

Open Door financially supports Scott Voltrauer’s work with TreeHouse, and Fernando is the success he is becoming in part because of the blessing of Open Door and other partners who invested in Fernando and thousands like him through the work of TreeHouse.

Nick Franzen also works for TreeHouse. Open Door is proud to financially support him and his work with at risk teenagers.

it was really uncomfortable to be honest, but as I got to know the staff at TreeHouse, I finally felt like I could share my whole story. In 9th grade I shared my whole life story for the very first time. During that process, it felt a weight lift off my shoulders; I felt like I was finally free from the grip of my past. I realized that what happened to me was not my fault and that my past did not define or control me. I have continued to experience so much healing as I’ve shared my story with others. There are still moments when I think back to that night when I was kid-napped and raped, and I think about how thankful I am. I’m thankful that I didn’t die. I’m thankful that I still have my family. But I’m most thankful that since that happened, I am able to tell people my story and glorify Christ. I’m thankful that this awful event led me to TreeHouse, and I’m so thankful that I now know my savior Jesus because of it. I am living proof that God uses all things to work for our good.” yOuTh WiTh A MiSSiON Lyndon and Shavat Friesen work with college students, helping them to follow Jesus through their work with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). Many of them have so much healing that needs to happen first before they can realize their potential. Many come from completely dysfunctional spiritual lives. One of their goals is to guide them into a lifestyle of openness, vulnerability and honesty. They champion authenticity and vulnerability, and they help students on the journey to become fully alive in Christ. This past year they had the privilege of leading a team of people from Canada to Peru, where they built houses for earthquake victims, and coordinated a daily program for kids to learn about God. Taylor, a student on this trip, shared his story of drug addiction that gripped him before an earlier trip he had taken two years ago. God used the trip to radically change his life, and he’s been clean and sober ever since. His mom beamed as she shared how much he had changed in those 2 years.

Open Door supports Lyndon and Shavat Friesen because, in their words, “Seeing young people come alive is what makes us come alive. Watching the process of people growing in their faith and living out their destiny inspires us to fully live out our destiny. Seeing people find truth and freedom in Christ inspires us to continue to be advocates of God’s righteous and compassionate character.”

GOODSPOrTS iNTErNATiONAL Tom and Debbie Johnson work with GoodSports International Slovakia. They are passionate about serving Slovak youth and families with values-based (Christian) physical, educational and inspirational programming.

After many years on staff at Open Door, Tom & Debbie’s work now involves coordinating baseball and softball programs for kids of all ages, which includes a partnership with a local baseball club. Spiritual formation groups meet weekly through the school year, for kids and adults who show interest in discovering what a Christ-centered life means.

During summer months, in addition to daily activities at the GoodSports Center, camps and retreats are organized. Tutoring, English classes, and developing business skills with casual and organized entertainment all take place at the GSC throughout the year.

When asked what they love most about the work they do, they answered, “The dependence we have on the Holy Spirit. This dependence has led us in cooperating with the Holy Spirit in creating something that will last well beyond our involvement. Since we will never be fluent in the language, we are continually learning more about what Jesus meant when he said in Matthew 5 that we are the light of the world - and to let our light (good works) shine is such a way that people see and respond to his love. We cannot say what a joy it has been to know first-hand this is true. The foundation of this ministry is based upon Jesus’ words. Without this truth and the Holy Spirit to bring about the supernatural transformation, we would have no hope.”

Open Door also financially supports the following people. Please pray for all of our partners as they courageously pursue the struggle of becoming fully alive in God, for the sake of others.

What Will remain?

By David Johnson, Senior Pastor

offline

As we’ve been going thru the book of Acts, I’ve found myself wondering, did any of these people who were experiencing the early days of the church, have any idea where it would all go? They experienced amazing outpourings of God’s Spirit, which often came at a very high price, and I wonder if they ever asked themselves “will any of this matter, for our children, or for their children?” At the end the day, what would remain?

Maybe it’s my age. Because at my age, I’ve seen a lot of things come and go. I’m talking about good things – innovative things – things that can draw a crowd. But that’s when I start wondering (and I drive myself crazy with this stuff) - “what’s really going on here?” “Is this really a move of God, or just good marketing?” Over the years, I’ve learned that an important question to ask, especially when planning for the future, is this - what will remain?

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he says some really weird things (in chapter 3) about how there will come a day when “our work” will be “revealed” as having had “substance”, or maybe not. The weird part is that he uses the language of metaphor – describing things of substance as being like “gold, silver, and precious stones” - and things that lack it being like “wood, hay, and stubble”. But then he adds the metaphor of fire – ouch! And what the fire does, at the end of the day (at the end of your life), is to burn up the things that have no substance. So what it obviously burns up is the “wood, hay, and stubble”. But please note this – the wood, hay, and stubble, are not burned up because they’re evil, sinful, or vile. They’re burned up, because they have no substance. They’re burned up, because they’re “light” - they’re “fluff” - they have no “weight”. So they burn up quickly, which means that at the end of the day, they didn’t matter – and the reason they didn’t matter, is because they didn’t remain.

Yesterday, the Executive Team and I spent the entire day with our elders, talking about the future of Church of the Open Door. Many important questions were asked, but none of them had to do with the latest “church growth trend” – or how we might become “cool and hip enough” to maybe draw a bigger crowd. We talked about things like character, and how it gets formed. We talked about remaining faithful and true to the Gospel that we preach and how high the stakes are if we don’t, especially for the coming generations. We talked about things of substance, which may not result in explosive growth, but will likely stand the test of time and trends. Things we believe will remain.

In the coming months we will be making some important decisions, relative to the vision and direction of our church. These decisions will not only impact Open Door in the near future, but perhaps for many years to come. Pray for us, that God would give us eyes to see what we need to see, and hear what we need to hear, and a vision of who we need to become and what we need to do, in order to build something of real substance - something that will remain!

The Widows Well Historically, a well has been a place where women have gathered in community and could draw not only water, but encouragement from one another. Here, widows can come together in a safe and nurturing environment that will allow them to continue to grow and learn in this season of life. It’s a place where women can say the name of their late husband and feel that others understand what it feels like to lose someone so close. This group meets offsite. There are no regularly scheduled meetings; people who pray for the requests on the Prayer Line access the confidential voicemail system from their own phones and pray as they are available. Contact Peggy at [email protected].

Next GenerationMentoring ProgramAt the core of Next Gen is mentoring. We pursue life transformation through one-on-one, life-on-life mentoring relationships. Our goal is that every student who comes to Next Gen has someone who knows them, is looking out for them, is invested in them and is engaged in their personal and spiritual growth. Learning Environments take place three out of four Wednesdays. Mentors and Students engage in a variety of fun activities, Biblical teachings and learning experiences. Each night includes an opportunity for students and mentors to connect one-on-one. Service Environments are on the first Wednesday of the month starting in November. Students rotate between over thirty organizations and spend their time serving. Drivers take groups to the service site and bring them back to Open Door. Wed, through May 14, 7-8:30pm (no programming Mar 26). If your student is interested in participating, please contact Amanda at [email protected] or ext 1703.

Serving OpportunitiesMentorsThe role of a mentor is to build an intentional relationship with a middle school or high school student by modeling the love of Christ through experiences and conversation. A mentor listens to the student, helps them process and reflect on the situations and experiences in their lives. Mentors are not teachers or expected to have all the answers, but are instead a consistent, loving presence in the student’s life. Mentors commit to serve Wednesday evenings for one full school year. Mentors also have a mentor coordinator who will serve as a coach and resource as the mentor/student relationship develops. Mentor coordinators will meet with mentors once a month during program time. Contact Amanda at [email protected] or ext 1703. Mentor CoordinatorsThe role of a mentor coordinator is to support and guide mentors as they build an intentional relationship with students. Each mentor coordinator will be assigned up to three mentors to coach and support throughout the year. This interaction will happen at Next Gen one Wednesday night a month and through other contact outside of program. Mentor coordinators also serve as the primary contact for parents. Contact Amanda [email protected] or ext 1703. Service LearningWe create environments where people are exposed to realities in our world, gain a deeper understanding of how our story intersects with others’, and take a next step by partnering with the work God is doing around us.

Service EnvironmentsService can take on many forms, sometimes it is hands-on like serving a meal or raking a yard and other times it is relational like being a friend to someone or listening to someone’s story. Serving experiences can be a catalyst to life change, which is why learning is the second core element of these environments. We believe that serving with others gives us a unique opportunity to process our experiences, ask questions, and think about our individual call to work for justice in our communities. We look at every serving experience through a lens of learning, intentionally seeing the people around us and being open to ask questions of ourselves and others. From this learning, we can interpret how Jesus is calling us into a more meaningful relationship with him and others.

Next Gen Service Environment DriversOn the first Wednesday of the month, over 300 students and mentors serve at approximately 35 sites throughout the Twin Cities. We need drivers to help transport to and from

each site. Drivers have the option to serve with the students and mentors. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Kim at [email protected]. Wed, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7 Site DirectorsJoin us in creating experiences where participants are invited to learn more about God, self and others while serving others in our community. We need Site Directors to facilitate monthly opportunities throughout the program year. Site Directors act as a liaison between an Open Door partner and the people and staff of the Open Door community, and will be the main contact throughout the program year. Contact Kim at [email protected]. Wed, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7 Minnesota FoodShare March CampaignDuring the month of March we partner with our local food shelf, CROSS, in the fight to stop hunger across Minnesota. Our neighbors benefit significantly from our food and money donations to CROSS. Last March 6637 pounds of food was collected! Join us, as we love our neighbors by helping to provide for one of our most basic needs. Empty Bowls ProjectThe goal of Empty Bowls is to help fight hunger, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist. Empty Bowls is a simple meal of soup and bread. Bowls are hand made by students, community members and local artists. The bowls are displayed and chosen to take home with a donation to CROSS food shelf. CROSS serves over 533 families a month in the immediate area. Thu, Mar 13, 2-8pmMaple Grove Community Center TripsWe are called to love others and work to bring justice to the world. In an effort to do so, we partner with people, locally and globally, to participate in God’s purpose and presence in the world. Haiti Teams - We have two teams traveling to Haiti an

adult team on April 14-24 and a Next Gen team on June 16-26. These teams will spend time at the Mephiboscheth Home and Mother Teresa. Please pray for this team as they experience Jesus in Haiti. If you are interested in being a part of a future Haiti team, contact Kim at [email protected].

Local Service Environment SitesWe partner with organizations that understand the needs of our community and the people in it. Contact one of our partner sites to learn more about their ministry or for serving opportunities apart from the ones we facilitate. Contact Rebecca at [email protected] or ext 1170.

PartnershipsWe rely on partners to connect us to people and places that may seem worlds away and lead us in the journey of learning more about God, others, and ourselves by serving. To do this, we look for people and organizations who align with our mission and values and who are partnering with the work God is doing in our world. If you have questions regarding Church of the Open Door Partnerships, contact the Partnerships Committee at [email protected]. For more information about Service Learning contact Kim at [email protected] or ext 1172.
