Our 2014 Captains conference was opened by Russ Settoonthanking everyone for their dedicated service and for givingtheir time and attention to the meetings. Russ assured the Captains that they are the back bone of ourcompany, and that our strength and growth is based largely onthem being a part of the Settoon Team. The focus of the meeting was to hear all of the issues, concerns,

and suggestions bothgood and bad to ensurethat we learn and growtogether as a companyand team and continueto improve our process. The company is doingwell at this time and ourgrowth has us operating 70 boats and 140 barges with theyoungest fleet in the industry. The focus at this time is to slowdown growth and improve our process, teamwork, and commu-nication.We would like to thankthe wives that wereable to attend andhope that they enjoyedthe meetings andplanned activity. TheCaptains meetings arescheduled in April of2015 and we arehopeful for anothergreat turnout.

DDiirreeccttiioonnss::Tear 16 slices of bread and place in 9 x 13 baking pan, beat eggs and addmilk, sugar and pour over the bread. Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake at350 degrees for 1 hour. Add the topping after baking is complete.TTooppppiinngg:: Melt one stick of butter, add ½ bag of white chocolate chips and 1 cup ofpowdered sugar. If too thick add one tablespoon of water. Pour over breadpudding and serve.

In September 2014, the Safety Department began our new in house training program. The program istaught by Stafford Calais. Stafford comes to Settoon with over 40 years of marine experience. The purposeof new training program is to track a person’s growth and development as an employee. Each person willbe evaluated upon performance from the day they hire on until the day they are cut loose as a wheelman.Each employee will be properly trained and won’t be allowed to be cut loose until it is believed that theyare fully ready for their new position.Deckhand training is conducted every 2nd and 4th week of the month. All new hire deckhands mustattend this training. The training consists of a four hour class in the crew change room and a four hour ofhands-on training behind the Houma office. The class gives the new hires an explanation of all their jobduties and responsibilities on the boat. The hands-on training includes how to throw a line and how to tiea bow line, breast line, backing line and towing line. They also learn how to lay 4 part wire and safe oper-ation of a deck winch. When possible, Stafford gets deck crews from boats standing by at the office tohelp with the hands on training. Stafford has also began an OBT, on board trainer, program. The purpose of an OBT is to sign off on tanker-men that have yet to be released. These OBT’s are all experienced tankermen that excel at their jobs andpractice safe and proper working procedures. We currently have 13 OBT’s. The last 5 OBT’s were nomi-nated by Captains from the Captain’s Meetings.

Safety Corner

Personal Hygiene is one of the safety topics for this last quarter. I’m getting some of these back withreference to using hand sanitizers, which can be helpful if used correctly. According to The Center ofDisease Control, some of the things you should know about hand sanitizers are:1. Hand sanitizers must contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective.2. Your hands must not contain grease or grime or the sanitizer won’t work.3. Your hands must be wet with the sanitizer for at least 30 seconds and you should not wipe thesanitizer off.4. Sanitizer does not kill everything. The flu virus; more specifically stomach flu, among others, isunaffected by hand sanitizer.5. Soap and water is much more effective than hand sanitizer, but can be more harsh to your skin. 6. When you do not have access to soap and water, hand sanitizer is the next best thing, as long as yourhands are not greasy or grimy.

Are You Saving Enough? By: Walter UpdegraveFueled by surge in stock prices, average 401(k) balances havecome back from the beating they took in the financial crisisand now stand at or near record highs.But hold the confetti.The tailwind of stocks’ nearly 18% of annualized gains of thepast five years – almost double in stock market’s long-termaverage – clearly isn’t sustainable for the long term. Indeed,given today’s low interest rates and high stock prices relativeto earnings, average annual stock returns over the nextdecade or so could come in at well below half the pace ofrecent years.Which means if you want to accumulate enough savings dur-ing your career to sustain you in retirement, you will have to doit the old-fashioned way: by saving diligently.On that front, the news isn’t quite so upbeat. A survey of 144large 401(k) plans covering some 3.5 million employeesreleased in July by benefits consulting firm Aon Hewitt foundthat the annual contribution for employees and employermatching funds combined averaged just under 11% of salarylast year, down from the year before. And although the survey also showed that the average employ-ee-plus-employer contribution rises with age- starting at 7.6%of salary for participants in their 20s and climbing to 10.1%,11%, 12.7% and 13.4% for participants in their 30s, 40s, 50sand 60s, respectively – not single age group averaged the15% a year that retirement experts generally recommend ifyou want to maintain your preretirement lifestyle after callingit a career.Boosting Your Nest EggFortunately, it doesn’t take a heroic savings effort to apprecia-bly boost the eventual size of your nest egg and enhance yourretirement prospects. Let’s assume you are 25 years old, earn$50,000 a year and receive 2% annual raises, and that youmake an “average” effort to fund a retirement account suchas your 401(k). That is, throughout your career the total of yourcontributions plus employer matching funds mirrors the age-group averages in the Aon Hewitt survey. If you invest your savings in a diversified portfolio of stocksand bonds that earns a reasonable rate of your return-say, 6%a year after fees-your 401(k) balance would total roughly $1.1million at age 65. That is a tidy sum, to be sure. But it probably isn’t enough toreplace enough of your income over at least 30 years of retire-ment.Increasing the amount you save by even a relatively smallamount can make a significant difference.Generally, advisors say personal savings should generate 50%to 60% of your preretirement income, so that withdrawalsfrom savings plus another 20% to 25% from Social Securityand other sources (part-time work, a pension) replace at least75% to 80% your preretirement income- a level experts gener-ally consider the benchmark for maintaining your standard ofliving after you retire.Increasing the amount you save by even relatively small

amount can significantlyimprove your chances ofreaching that level. For example, if instead ofsaving at that averagelevel, reported by AonHewitt, you set aside anextra 1% of salary eachyear, your 401(k)account’s value wouldclimp to just under $1.2 million at age 65. Assuming a 4% ini-tial withdrawal of $48,000, your savings would be able toreplace nearly 45% of preretirement income from savingsalone. Boost your savings rate another 1% each year, and youraccount’s projected value rises to almost $1.3 million, whichallows for a withdrawal of $52,000, bringing you just withinreach of replacing 50% of your preretirement income fromsavings.If you stash away the 15% a year that advisors recommend,you would have a nest egg at age 65 valued at almost $1.6million, providing for an initial withdrawal $64,000, or about60% of preretirement income. Throw in an additional 20% to25% from Social Security and other sources, and your retire-ment income now meets or exceeds that 75% to 80% bench-mark.Protection From SetbacksAside from the obvious benefit of a larger nest egg generatingmore income in retirement, saving at a higher rate during yourcareer also makes your retirement strategy less vulnerable tosetbacks from financial shocks.For example, the hypothetical 25-year-old in the scenariosabove saved like a machine each and every year over fourdecades. In the real world, job losses, health problems, unex-pected expenses and all manner of other unanticipatedevents can prevent even the most diligent saver from stickingto a savings regimen uninterrupted over an entire career.By making the effort to save at higher rate when things aregoing well, however, you effectively will build a cushion thatwill help you better absorb any financial setbacks and get yourretirement planning back on track.Such a cushion can come in especially handy late in yourcareer. For examply, if you are on the verge of retiring and thestock market takes a dive, having $1.6 million in savingsinstead of $1.1 million could mean the difference betweenscaling back your life-style a bit but still going ahead with yourretirement plans versus having to postpone your employmentexit and work longer.The single best way to maximize your savings effort is to signup for your company’s 401(k) or similar plan. Aside from thebenefit that your contributions and investment earnings in a401(k) account go untaxed until withdrawal, the fact thatmoney is automatically deducted from your paycheck makes itmore convenient to save, and more likely you actually will doso.

That said, some features in 401(k) plans that were designedto spur savings can sometimes have the opposite effect. Forexample, the lure of “free money” in the form of companymatching contributions clearly creates and incentive to save.But the Aon Hewitt survey shows that nearly a third of 401(k)participants contribute just enough to get the full companymatch.While doing that may seem smart, in that you get the largestcompany match while you shell out as little as possible, it alsocan leave you short of the savings rate required to assure asecure retirement.Keep in mind, though, that while 15% is generally a reason-able goal, the actual amount you should be setting aside can

vary considerably depending on your salary, how much youhave stashed away and the number of years until you retire.There are many online retirement planning tools that can helpyou in on the right annual savings target for you. Whether youuse a basic calculation or a more comprehensive one thatallows you to vary such assumptions as how you invest yoursavings and your planned retirement date, you will want toreassess every year or so to see whether your current savingsrate is adequate.As exciting as it may be to watch the value of your nest eggswell as stock prices soar, over the long run it is how much yousave that will determine how well you can live in retirement.

For our operating systems, wechose Zoho. Worldwide, Zoho hasover 10 million users every day!Our Marine Traffic application,

now with more than 150 users and 1 million records, is one of the largest applications in the Zoho sys-tem. Zoho has taken interest in our applications. Mark Mestayer, our systems consultant, is in frequentcontact with the founders and is influencing development of their products.

Zoho requested that we allow them to showcase the Settoon Towing Marine Traffic application. InSeptember they sent an international film crew to our offices in Houma where they interviewed Mark andmembers of our Houma staff. Fortuitously, the M/V Olivia Grace Settoon was in the area. The film crewboarded and Captain Brad Barthelemy reluctantly agreed to be interviewed on camera. He did a great joband you can judge for yourself when the film is released.

You may not be aware but Brad played a vital role in the initial development of our Marine Traffic appli-cation. While Brad was the Relief Captain on the M/V Blair Settoon, he graciously agreed to be the firstuser and made extraordinary contributions troubleshooting and improving the user experience. We wishto thank Brad and the crew of the M/V Olivia Grace Settoon for their help in the video's production.

We also wish to thank Todd Maise and special thanks to Scott Townsend and Ryan Donnes who con-tributed their time off to assist. Well done guys, we can't wait to see the finished product.

Military to Maritime Job FairNot many job fairs begin with the Pledge of Allegiance.Nor are many career transition seminars advertised tobegin at 1430 hours. And fewer still have a row of tug-boats, towboats and other oceangoing vessels parkedoutside for visitors to tour. But on Wednesday,September 3, 2014 the Port of Houston Authoritythrew open the doors of its Bayport Cruise Terminal fora job fair designed for veterans. More than 400 veterans attended a Military toMaritime career fair sponsored by the AmericanMaritime Partnership (AMP), the voice of the domesticmaritime industry. The event was hosted by the Port ofHouston. The job fair featured about 50 exhibitors,including Settoon Towing, LLC.
