DAVID JENNISON WAS HIRED BY A GWA'SALA-
'NAKWAXDA'XW COMMITTEE FOR THE POSITION

"Hello everyone, I would love to meet with each
member of this community, on or off-reserve. You
are welcome to check out a facebook account I set
up for this position: 'David Jennison GN
Counsellor'. I have also created a survey to better
understand the needs of the community and what
my role as counsellor should look like. I really
hope every Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw community
member will respond to this quick and easy 6
question survey. Then I will know how to better
respond to the needs of the community and help
in any healing that needs attention. The link
www.surveymonkey.com/s/WH7YPBS can also be
found at my facebook page. This survey can also
be filled out on paper at the Health and Family
Services building. You are also welcome to come
by and just say hi to me or bring in any concerns
you are having. Please also note that my door is
always open for suggestions about how you feel I
may better serve this community. I have much to
learn and need your help along my journey."

many complaints of the growth and problems with
a number of different dogs wandering around the
community and school grounds.
Thank you in advance for your support and
understanding. From: chief and council

2014 TREATY PROJECT UPDATE
As we said in the past, that forestry is an important part of our treaty negotiations.
Forests are important in our traditional territories to:
Protect the natural environment including fish and wildlife,
Provide food and wood for cultural use such as cedar for long houses, canoe,
carving, bark stripping and medicines that our people use,
Jobs for our people in the forest industry,
Profits for our community.
As our chief has said many times, forests must be managed “sustainably”, which
means that while we may use our forests today we must leave them in as good or
better shape than how we inherited them from our elders. We sustainably
managed our forests and all natural resources for thousands of years, much better
than the federal and provincial governments have in the last 100 years.
As part of our Treaty Negotiations we need to better understand the forests in our
territory using modern forest management practices. This will inform our treaty
team and community members for these important negotiations. To do this we are
doing the following:
1. Gathering all the necessary maps and data to prepare a forestry plan for our
entire territory,
2. We will then prepare a draft plan,
3. Present a copy of all maps and data and the draft plan to our forest company
- Gwa’Nak Resources for their comment and input,
4. From their input prepare a second draft of the forestry plan,
5. Inform the community of the draft plan by way of a Newsletter and social
media and invite members to a community meeting,
6. Present the second draft of the draft plan at the community meeting,
7. Prepare a final draft of the forestry plan based on what we heard at the
community meeting,
8. Present the final forestry plan to Council, interested community members,
Gwa’Nak, Canada and B.C. at the Treaty Table.
If you have any questions or comments please contact Chief Negotiator, Colleen
Hemphill at the Treaty Office: 949-8424 or at the Band Office: 949-8343.

Elders Update
Yo! I sure hope everybody is keeping nice and warm with our late winter chill. The Elder's just had a nice Valentine's celebration this past Tuesday. It was great fun. Lots of food and great laughs had by all. Thanks to Chelsey & Lucy H for all your help with prepping for this occasion. We will resume with Elder's Day Monday starting at 10am-3pm. The last two weeks there was no Program due to a holiday and a funeral. The next Elders council meeting will be Friday morning same time. The gym equipment has been set up for any Elders that wish to use it. I also have water here for when you do come :) We have a bigger catering job for an outside company next Friday, Feb.28 for dinner. I need bannock makers, fish BBQers, salad makers, potato peelers & veggie choppers. Please call or come and see me to put your name down. We will be going clam digging for the Elders as soon as the weather holds up and we catch a good. Any Elders that are able to climb on and off a beached boat are able to sign up with me at my office. Lemon's(Dorey's) Point is closed so we will have to find another spot to dig. I have a few extra diggers to come and help me get clams for the Elder's. Lucy Hemphill will also use some for the Good Food Box Program. Reminder that Good Food Box is today (Friday). So don't forget to come and pick up your Food Box. The Elders Program will now be buying 4 Good Food Boxes for Elder's Day Program so that I don't have to get as much from Overwaitea for double the amount of $. Matt & I will be starting up a Health Challenge very soon for ALL of the Elders :D Stay tuned for further details. Enjoy your weekend. Stay warm and if your travelling, drive safe. Food Security & Nutrition Update:
Some exciting things are happening in the Food Security & Nutrition Program.
We got a grant to build a pavilion next to the bus shed. This pavilion is for the Elders and it will have fish
cleaning tables and a large fire-pit where salmon can be bbq’d. It’s currently being built, and will be
finished sometime in mid March. When it’s finished we will be having a celebration with the Elders and a
blessing of the site. The community will be welcome to attend, so I’ll keep you updated on that in the next
Yo! News.
As I mentioned in the last article Colleen George and Andrea Walkus have been helping with the Good
Food Bags. We postponed the last Good Food Bag pickup day out of respect for the families who lost their
loved ones. GFB Pickup day was moved to Friday Feb 21st between 1pm and 3pm. It will continue to be
every second week after that ( see the attached calendar). The Good Food Bag Program is for ALL Band
Members, not just for those on Social Assistance. Any Band Members can sign up, even off-reserve band
members. As long as you pay your $10 on the Friday before the pickup day and remember to pick it up,
you’ll get a GFB.
Andrea Walkus and I are starting a Healthy Cooking Class at 1:30pm on Friday March 7th ( the same day
as Good Food Box Pickup). You can signup for this at the Band Office Reception and the Health and
Family Services Reception. If the first cooking class goes well, we’ll continue having them every second
Friday (the same day as GFB Pickup.)
This past Wednesday I attended a Healthy Grocery Shopping Tour at Overwaitea with Bronwyn Coine,
Registered Dietician. I’m going to start doing these healthy shopping tours with our community
members. I will be showing community members how to make grocery shopping easier and healthier. If
you’re interested, you can sign up at the Band Office Reception of Health & Family Services Reception.
We’ll wait to see how many people are interested, and then will decide on a date for the first tour.
On the next couple pages I’ve written a guide to Healthy Grocery Shopping and understanding food
labels, I hope you find this useful. As usual, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call
or e-mail, and be sure to “like” the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Good Food Box Page to stay connected.
Keep well,

Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator

Healthy Shopping Guide
We are what we eat, and many years ago our
people ate the healthiest food possible: seafood,
wild game, roots, shoots and berries. We didn’t
have to worry about pollution or pesticides or
over-processed foods. We didn’t have to worry
about diabetes or obesity or heart disease either.
Back then we were connected to our food source,
and that connection kept us healthy just as much
as the food itself did.
Time is different now; we rely for the most part
on the grocery store for our sustenance. Though
we no longer need to survive by
harvesting/preparing traditional food, it is
important to maintain our traditional food
practices, both because they are an important
part of our cultural identity, but also because
they help us to be healthier.
Keeping that in mind, we do still need to shop at
the grocery store. How do we shop healthier for
our families and ourselves when the grocery
store is full of thousands of tempting unhealthy
items, many of them making health claims. It
can all be pretty confusing, but here I will share
some tips for making it easier to shop healthier.
Have a plan. Make a weekly meal plan to help
you create healthy meals. Having a plan will
make it easier to make a list, and buy what you
need.
1. Make a list and stick to it.
2. Don’t shop on an empty stomach. If you’re
hungry when shopping you’ll be tempted
to buy fast processed foods.
3. Shop the outer-perimeter of the store. For
the most part grocery stores keep their
freshest/least-processed groceries on the
outer perimeter of the store. These should
make up the bulk of your groceries. The
items in the center aisles of the store are
full of processed, packaged, sugar, fat and
salt-laden foods. Though there are some
staples you will need from these aisles,
keep your shopping here to a minimum.
4. Choose quality over quantity. Though
that bag of potato chips may be cheaper
than the bag of apples, the apples will
keep you fuller longer, and will nourish
you, where as the chips have no nutrients
and are high In fat, salt and sugar and
will not keep you full as long as an apple.
5. Read the Labels. This can be a tricky one,
because they can be difficult to decipher.
Not to worry, in the next Yo! News I will
post a guide to reading food labels.
6. The less processed the better: choose
brown rice over white; whole-wheat pasta
over white pasta; unprocessed meats over
deli meats; oats over processed cold
cereals; fresh fruit over fruit jelly snacks,
etc. The less processed the food, the more
nutrients and fiber it has, and less
chemicals, and preservatives it has, which
means it’s healthier for you and your
family.
7. Enjoy plenty of vegetables and fruits.
Choose plenty of dark green and orange
vegetables like broccoli, spinach, sweet
potato and squash. Buy fresh or frozen
vegetables whenever possible. Look for
canned vegetables that are low in sodium.
8. Choose healthy drinks. Avoid sugar-
packed pops and juices. fruit juice may
seem like a better choice than pop, but it’s
still packed with sugar, and lacks the
fiber to slow it’s absorption into the blood-
stream, making it a bad choice for
diabetics. Avoid flavored or “vitamin
waters” they are still packed with sugar,
and it’s better to get your vitamins from
fruits and vegetables. Also avoid diet
drinks, which are usually packed with
aspartame: a dangerous chemical
sweetener, which may be worse than
sugar. The best choice is plain water, tap
water will do and it’s free! If you don’t like
water by itself, try it with a squeeze of
lemon or lime, slices of cucumber or frozen
berries.
9. Be skeptical. Many processed and
packaged foods make claims to be good for
you, but their bottom line is money, not
your health, so learn to be skeptical. Stick
to items that are less processed, and if you
choose a processed item make sure to read
the label first. It may say “heart healthy”
or “high in fiber” on the front, but
contains high amounts of sugar.
