Small Time Napoleon combines their affection for harmony, curiosity of rhythm and fascination with the tunes of the past to create a unique musical experience. With artists like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright and John Prine in mind they’ve recently written, recorded and released their debut EP which has received positive feedback from listeners and critics alike. Laura Shine, Assistant Program Director/On-Air Host at Louisville’s WFPK, says of the band, “Small Time Napoleon is poised for big time things. They are truly one of the most unique and exciting bands I’ve seen... Award-winning choreographers Ann Reinking and Melissa Thodos are teaming up again to co-choreograph “A Light In the Dark,” the story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, their second full-length contemporary story ballet, this time telling an intimate family story about the extraordinary woman who was deaf and blind yet went on to become a world-famous writer, political activist and inspiration to all. Their first story ballet, “The White City,” was so well received that you asked to see “A Light In the Dark” as a TDC encore and Doudna Fine Arts Center ‘Best Of’. Through contemporary dance, “A Light In the Dark” tells the story of how Anne, Helen’s teacher, led her from a state of almost feral wildness into education, activism and intellectual celebrity. A 49-year-long relationship between the two shows Sullivan’s evolution from teacher into governess and then eventual companion, while Keller went on to become a world-famous speaker, author and advocate for persons with disabilities, amid numerous other causes.

Alex is a trombone and jazz instructor at California Institute of the Arts and California State University, Northridge and is a Conn/Selmer performing artist. Alex has performed and/or recorded with: Joe Cocker, James Horner, Henry Mancini, Alan Jackson, The Tonight Show, Hans Zimmer, The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Johnny Mathis, Lalo Shiffrin, Natalie Cole, Danny Elfman, Ray Charles, Trevor Rabin, Harry Connick Jr., Robbie Williams, Terence Blanchard, John Williams and Prince. He has played in the pit orchestras of numerous Los Angeles productions of Broadway shows including: “The Lion King,” “Phantom of the Opera”, “Chicago,” “West Side Story,” “The Producers" and "Hairspray.” He has toured as lead and solo jazz trombonist with the Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson big bands. He has also performed on “The Emmy Awards,” “Golden Globe Awards,” “The People's Choice Awards” and hundreds of television series and motion picture soundtracks.

As graduates of The Juilliard School, Shawn Wyckoff (flute), Maria Kaneko Millar (violin) and Nan-Cheng Chen (cello) have performed in classical music’s greatest halls and traveled the world in roles as diverse as fiddle-dancing in Riverdance, jamming with Beale Street blues bands, soloing and drumming with taiko troupes, improvising with Native-American flute masters, dancing while performing the tango music of Astor Piazzolla, and playing rock clubs across NYC. This lifelong commitment to devouring new sounds and pushing boundaries – both within themselves and the musical establishment – is how Sonic Escape came to be. It’s also how the trio amassed a ridiculous technique that makes audiences swear they’re hearing an orchestra of a dozen different instruments or the synchronous voice of one.

Ultimately, the total Sonic Escape experience is what makes lifelong believers out of initiates. Humor and candid conversation draw audiences into the music, while the players’ backgrounds in acting, singing and dancing turn concerts into unforgettable performance events. Improvisation takes it up a notch, infusing shows with pure, dynamic energy. As music and stories intertwine, audiences are taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions, revelations and ultimately, the desire to learn more. Tracing her epic life –from her ascent to fame in the 1930s to her death in 1952.

The “Song of Eva Perón” presents the flowering of a humble and beautiful woman. Starting from nothing but propelled by the influence of the Tango, which she first heard while growing up in the slums of Buenos Aires, Eva attains stardom and blooms to be Argentina‘s First Lady. Her story brought her worldwide acclaim and still resonates with her millions of admirers. The “Song of Eva Perón” is the tale of this mythical figure put into traditional Tango dance and music from Buenos Aires.

William Count Basie started the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri. Within a year, America was listening in on popular radio shows throughout the country to hear what would become "The Swingingest Band In All The Land"! A phenomena was born in 1935 that is still going strong today!

Since Basie's passing in 1984, Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Grover Mitchell, Bill Hughes and Dennis Mackrel have led the Count Basie Orchestra and maintained it as one of the elite performing organizations in jazz.

A performance by the Cashore Marionettes is a celebration of life. The program consists of a collection of engaging pieces encompassing a broad range of themes, each delivered with a simplicity that expresses the essence of the moment.

Life in Motion In the performance Life in Motion, Joseph Cashore presents his collection of marionette masterworks. Characters of depth, integrity and humanity are portrayed in a full evening unlike anything else in theater today. The performance is a series of scenes taken from everyday life and set to beautiful music by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss and Copland. Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, humor, pathos, classic music and poetic insight, The Cashore Marionettes take the audience on a journey that celebrates the richness of life. Life in Motion is a powerful, entertaining, surprising, theatrically satisfying and one-of-a-kind evening for adults and young adults.

Simple Gifts The program, Simple Gifts, is a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life set to stunning music by such composers as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven and Copland. Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, beautiful music, theatrical illusion and artistic insight, the original vignettes presented in Simple Gifts provide an entertaining and sensitive vision of what it is to be human. The performance explores a range of emotions with characters and actions that are amazingly convincing. The marionettes are engineering marvels and the quality of movement is extraordinary.

Voted another Doudna Fine Arts Center ‘Best Of’, the pairing of Switchback with a newer artist a couple of years ago thrilled the audience. We’re doing it again, this time putting Switchback on stage with Robinella and the Twangtown Paramours.

Each group will perform a set of their own music, and the show will end with any combination of the three groups playing and singing together. These groups have never performed together so you’ll never know what will happen!

Frankie Flood’s interest in machines and tools and the influence of his working class upbringing is a source of inspiration for the functional objects that he creates. Flood is an associate professor of jewelry/metalsmithing at the Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (1998) and Master of Arts degrees(2000) from EIU and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign. Flood exhibits his work nationally and internationally, and has received many awards.

Nathalie Miebach explores the intersection of art and science by translating scientific data from meteorology, ecology and oceanography into woven sculptures and as performance art. Basket weaving, her main method of data translation, functions as a simple, tactile grid to interpret data into 3-D space. The role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of complex scientific systems is central to her work. Miebach is the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including a Pollock Krasner Award, a TED Global Fellowship and a 2012 nomination for the World Technology Award. Her work has been shown in the US, Europe and Australia and has been reviewed by publications spanning fine arts, craft, design, science and technology. She lives and works in Boston.

The first annual Midwest Collaborative Piano Competition will bring the region’s best high school pianists to Doudna for a day of musical collaboration with EIU instrumental and vocal soloists on Saturday, November 15. Alice Bag was the lead singer of The Bags, the first female fronted punk band to play the Masque during the West Coast punk revolution of 1977. Her new book, Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage is the story of her upbringing in East L.A., her eventual migration to Hollywood and the euphoria and aftermath of the first

punk wave. Violence Girl reveals how domestic abuse fueled her desire for female empowerment and sheds a new perspective on the origin of hardcore, a style most often associated with white suburban males.

Alice is a long-time blogger turned author and a former bilingual elementary school teacher. An outspoken activist, feminist and a self-proclaimed troublemaker, Alice brings her Chicana punk attitude to the printed page in her new book.

Prize in 2013. She teaches in the Institute of American Indian Arts low residency MFA program. Her first book, When My Brother Was an Aztec, was published in June 2012, by Copper Canyon Press. She currently lives in Mohave Valley, Arizona, and directs a language revitalization program at Fort Mojave, her home reservation. There she works and teaches with the last Elder speakers of the Mojave language.

Edward Kelsey Moore is the author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, which was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2013. The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat was awarded the 2014 First Novelist Award by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and was chosen as a 2013 Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. The Supremes was also named a 2014 Illinois Reads book by the Illinois Reading Council.

Edward’s essays and short fiction have appeared in the New York Times and a number of literary magazines, including Ninth Letter, Indiana Review, African American Review and Inkwell. His short story Grandma and the Elusive Fifth Crucifix was selected as an audience favorite on Chicago Public Radio’s Stories on Stage series. In addition to his writing, Edward maintains a career as a professional cellist, performing with a number of ensembles, including the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Joffrey Ballet Orchestra. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Edward lives in Chicago, Illinois with his partner of many years. He is currently at work on his second novel. Julija Šukys is assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She is the author of two books of nonfiction, Silence is Death: The Life and Work of Tahar Djaout (Nebraska, 2007) and Epistolophilia: Writing the Life of Oa Šimaitė (Nebraska, 2012). Epistolophilia was shortlisted for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Nonfiction, long-listed for the Charles Taylor Award in Literary Nonfiction and won the 2013 Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award for Holocaust Literature.

Stephen Graham Jones is the author of 10 novels, two collections, one novella and countless short stories. a Texas Writers League Fellow and an NEA fellow in fiction. His short fiction has been in Cemetery Dance, Asimov’s, Weird Tales, The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction, as well as Open City, Black Warrior Review, Alaska Quarterly Review and many others. He received his PhD from Florida State University.
