Value Stream Mapping, A3 Thinking & Principles of Lean (2 days)

Day 1Value Stream Mapping - Whether a product is being produced or a service rendered, a value stream exists. Value Stream Maps provide a “birds-eye” view of the current steps in a process, from beginning to end, essentially providing a blueprint for a Lean Transformation. Mapping is a critical initial step in deploying a Lean business strategy because it clearly shows where the process could be improved through the application of other Lean techniques. This workshop shows you how to create and apply this fundamental and critical tool.

A3 Thinking - Once you have a visual representation of the improvement areas using a Value Stream Map, specific issues can be addressed using the A3 problem-solving method. Based on W. Edwards Deming’s method of P-D-C-A (Plan, Do, Check, Act), A3 requires a team to confine their problem/solution discussion to what will fit on an 11” x 17” sheet of paper, making simplicity and brevity key. The workshop will demonstrate that A3 is a way of thinking – not a report-writing methodology. Participants will learn the steps of effectively implementing the P-D-C-A cycle while building a report that reflects the results of the cycle. Students should bring a problem to class to use during the exercises and take back a solution to be implemented.

Day 2 Principles of Lean - This hands-on workshop focuses on the basic principles of Lean. Attendees will have an opportu-nity to experience how Lean principles are applied in a simulated production environment. The workshop simulation guides attendees through the transition from a traditional manufacturing approach to that of a Lean environment. Participants will see how waste is eliminated, productivity is increased, and companies can gain a competitive edge in the marketplace, while reducing costs and improving cash flow. Attendees will leave this workshop with a good understanding of how Lean concepts enhance performance for any type of organization.

Benefits• Clarify and visualize target areas for improvement• Learn how Value Stream Mapping can be used in all

areas of your enterprise• Learn to implement A3 using a real problem from your

organization• Learn how to simplify problem analysis• Understand how to use P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Act)• Formalize a plan and document problem-solving steps• Develop problem solvers within your organization• Gain an understanding of Lean and its advantages• Learn how to identify and eliminate non-value-added activities

Root Cause Analysis & Mind Mapping

Mind Mapping allows people to more clearly understand a problem. Root Cause analysis forms a methodology for finding and correcting the most important reasons for performance problems. This combination allows an individual to “see the whole” of a problem and fix it so it stays fixed. Attendees will learn to use Mind Mapping to summarize a project, subject or problem. The summary allows all of the factors to be visualized and their relationships understood. Attendees will then learn to use Root Cause tools to dig beyond typical initial answers, get to the true causes and find solutions to problems.

Problem Identification• SIPOC (a method to define and document

Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, and Customers)

• 5 Whys (a question-asking method used to explore cause/effect relationships)

Problem Correction/Prevention• Ishikawa (Fishbone) Diagrams• Cause and Effect Matrix• Tools for Corrective Action and Preventive Action

(CAPA)• Benefit-Effort Matrix• Standard Work• Poka-yoke (a device to prevent defect production)

Students should bring a problem to class to use during the exercises. At the end of class, solutions can be taken back to the workplace and implemented.

Benefits• Gain clarity in identifying problems• Pinpoint the true causes of problems• Develop methodologies for fixing problems

Teaming and Standard Work

Teaming – In today’s competitive world, organizations are depending upon all employees to participate in their search for excellence. This search requires a team effort. However, many individuals have difficulty performing in a team environment. The teaming workshop helps describe the teaming process, stages of development, and characteristics of high-performance teams. Participants will learn their team player style and how best to utilize their key attributes in a team environment.

Standard Work – helps eliminate wasted time and effort in any process – from manufacturing to assembly to information flow. This workshop will help employees deconstruct a work task and look at each step involved in that task. Each step is reviewed for potential optimization or elimination. The goal is to define the best known way to effectively and efficiently perform an activity so that waste can be eliminated. By eliminating waste, time, cost and manpower can be maximized. Participants of this workshop will learn the key steps in developing, implementing and sustaining Standard Work.

Applying Lean Through The Enterprise

Flow represents the efficiency by which customer interest is turned into customer satisfaction. By this definition, flow encompasses all areas of a business, not just production. To achieve maximum gain, flow must occur across the Lean enterprise. Often, the impediment to flow and to improved business performance exists in areas other than production.

During this workshop, you’ll learn how Lean concepts apply to the non-production areas such as procurement, ac-counting, and order processing. This workshop is structured around a case study.

ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING CERTIFICATIONS & WORKSHOPS

If you are not sure about which of our development programs is right for you, here are some ideas to help guide your thinking. The classes build on each other, so taking them in order is ideal, however there is enough review of the critical concepts in each to allow you to start at the current level for your career. Take Supervisor Training if you are currently being considered for (or considering) a supervisory position, you have recently been promoted to the role of supervisor, or you have been supervising people but your only formal training has been the school of hard knocks. Employee Engagement

Engaged employees have a significant impact on bottom line results. In fact, firms that have higher levels of engaged employees are 18% more productive and 16% more profitable. Yet 70% of American workers are “not engaged” according to a recent Gallup Poll.

As a result, the less engaged they are, the more likely they are to leave. Key employee turnover can be a major setback for a business and quite costly. As part of this workshop, you and your direct reports will complete an on-line assessment that will diagnose your current employee engagement levels.

Then we will work on understanding what is driving the engagement levels and create an action plan to maintain or improve the engagement as appropriate. As a leader, you have the most significant influence over how engaged the people that work for you are. Learn if you are doing everything you can to maximize that engagement.

With the improving economy, there are many who expect to see increasing turnover rates as more opportunities come into existence. Make sure that your best people aren’t interested in these new opportunities.

Benefits

• Learn what employee engagement really means• Identify the difference between engaged and non-engaged employees• Learn why employee engagement is so important to the business• Review the current level of employee engagement within your area of influence• Find out how your behaviors and communication style can impact employee engagement• Learn what you can do to maximize the engagement of the people that report to you• Identify the things that you are doing that might be hurting the engagement of your staff

Taking Flight with DISC

Based on the DISC personality profile, the Taking Flight with DISC session will keep participants highly engaged as they learn about the most interesting topic of all…themselves! Participants discover their own behavioral style, as well as why they click with some and clank with others. A recent study revealed that 83% of those who scored high on self-awareness were also rated as top performers. Only 2% of bottom-performers scored high on self-awareness. Self-aware people (those who understand their strengths and weaknesses) are far more likely to be successful….and DISC helps to increase self-awareness.

This training session is ideal for managers seeking to lead more effectively and for teams that want to achieve higher performance levels. There is also a significant benefit for teams to attend this session as a unit and for those that do, pricing will be discounted. By revealing the power of style in their everyday lives, participants learn strategies for how to get the most out of their native strengths and improve relationships at every level. The respect, teamwork, and trust fostered by this approach establish an environment in which all team members can thrive. DISC is truly an investment in understanding and managing differences.

Benefits• Understand and value differences in others • Identify ways to improve relationships and performance• Reduce conflict and stress • Build trust and respect between team members • Improve team communication and morale • Create a workplace culture that drives results

Additional Session takeaways• A personalized behavior style report • A DISC Reminder Card that captures key DISC principles• All participants also receive a copy of Taking Flight!: Master the Four Behavioral Styles and Transform Your Ca-

Leverage Communication & Learning Styles Did you ever wonder why it is easy to communicate with some people and much harder to communicate with others? In today’s business world it is ever so critical to be a strong communicator.

This half-day workshop will help you to recognize that a “one size fits all” style of communication is ineffective. Learn how to utilize and identify different communication styles (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) to enhance your delivery and engage others.

At the onset of this class you will be asked to complete a Neurolinguistic Communication Profile. This tool is used to assess your preferred ways of communicating and will help you develop a profile of your communication style. Specifically you will develop a profile of your patterns of taking in information, thinking, and expressing yourself. This knowledge will help you to increase your flexibility in working with others and improve your communication and learning.

Benefits• Improve your communications and be more in tune with others while learning your own communication style• Learn that your dominant style may be very different from others• Learn to adjust your communication style to achieve better outcomes • Improved listening and gain the ability to recognize cues from others• Share best practices with others in an interactive session
