I kept discovering the world of shapes and colors, and inevitably, my vision went through changes, sometimes subtle, other times as evident as realism, abstraction or symbolism. I perceive in my works the persistence of an essential key: the presence of the Indo-American. In transforming hands, birds, plants, suns and imaginary rivers, I travel a magic path searching for the seed of the fertile heart of the Americas. Cletus Johnson Abiding Art + Architecture November 7 - December 5, 2014 Opening Reception: Friday, November 7 | 6 - 8 p.m. Entering the art scene in 1974, Cletus Johnson’s theaters and assemblages engage multi-faceted realities of the imagination. With critical eyes focused on dismissed truths, a language derived from forgotten and fragmented materials and places confronts ideas of isolation and nostalgia. Through poetics and encapsulated melancholy, each composition gives a way for the viewer to interpret its layers evident within Mr. Johnson’s creative process and as spatial manifestations. Through painted canvasses and sound portraits, Passing Through marks moments in which 17 emerging adults transition to realize their selves and claim their voices. Different religious and cultural beliefs, a range of sexual identities and orientations, socioeconomic status, work and travel experiences, failures and successes, family structures and health issues are represented across the 17 subjects.
