The German International School is always busy and full of activity. Reflecting back over the past twelve months, we weresurprised and thrilled with the achievements of our school. Below and included in the pages of the Annual Report areupdates and insights into the many accomplishments that came during the 2014-15 academic year:

It is hard to believe, but here is just a snapshot list of what we did together:

-Secured our permanent home, -Received accreditation as a German School of Excellence, -Entered the Candidate Phase on the path to International Baccalaureate Certification, -Enrolled more students than ever, -Changed our name and logo, -Launched a new website, -Celebrated our 20th Anniversary, -Built 2 new play structures, -Installed new system and reconfigured our library, -Built 2 new classrooms and replaced our tired carpet!

We are so proud of our students, staff, parents and community members for these achievements and so much more. Theyear was obviously full of excitement and challenges. This year’s annual report reflects how much we do each day and howwe are preparing our school for continued success in the future. We hope you will enjoy reviewing the year and encourageyou to connect (or reconnect) with us through our new website and various social media platforms. As always, please letus know if you have feedback and ideas on how to continually enhance the school experience for our students.

Im Namen der Schule und Schulvorstand bedanken wir uns ganz herzlich. We would like to sincerely thank you in the name of the school and the Board,

Blake Peters, Head of School and Marcus Eyth, Board President

The 2014-2015 fiscal and academic year finished on a strong note. In addition to being a year of record student enrollment, we securedour permanent home for the school allowing us to develop long term strategies for growth, and we had very successful fundraisingactivities.

Here are some key contributors to this past year’s positive results:

- Enrollment: We budgeted for 171 students and enrolled 181, our highest ever. - Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA), German Government Contributions: We are thankful for the continuing support from the ZfA. Since this past year, we are in a new payment and contractual structure which allows the school to better plan and forecast our finances. - Extended Care: This was our 4th year running our Extended Care Program and it continues to exceed budget. - Fundraisers: Fundraising exceeded expectations and goals. - Branding: We revamped our logo, changed our name and launched a new website. - Rent: Came in under budget due to the building transaction closing in April.

GIS’s cash position remains strong. This year’s surplus helps us to further build up crucial reserve funds to ensure the school’s fiscalhealth, all while continuing to invest in our program and staff.

The 2015/16 year is in full flight and we look forward to a continued strong trend. We appreciate and thank you for your continuedsupport for the school.

At the end of each year, our students participate inProject Week. The focus of the 2014-2015 school yearwas on buildings of all kinds.

From learning about Spanish-style architecture to thestyles of First Nations tribes, our students activelyexpressed what they had learned.

The Building Project Week was a great success. Studentscollaborated with different subject matter, studentgroups, and expressed themselves in a multitude ofmedia. At the end of the week, students shared their verydeep knowledge on topics related to the theme ofbuilding.

Exciting Achievements in Our Program

We are proud to tailor the learning experience to the needsof our diverse learning community. Learning is not limited tostudents and throughout the year there have been valuablelearning opportunities for teachers, parents and staff. Inaddition to external training opportunities, like IB workshopsin the Northwest region, staff shared best practices withingrade level teams. Reflecting on experiences with thepurpose to solidify learning are key to theselearning processes. Teachers model successful learnerbehaviors for students and embrace their role as facilitatorsof learning.

By collaborating in the planning process and

cooperating in quality circle groups, GIScontinually improves upon teaching strategies, sharing ideas and ways to improve our teaching.Just like with our students, teachers take time toreflect on accomplishments and ways to furtherimprove.

Facility Improvements

Our ongoing facility improvements tie into ourschool development. The library redesign and re-cataloging allows for more efficient use ofspace and time, as well as makes bookssearchable by title and theme for research. Wealso relocated the 4th and 5th grades to newclassrooms upstairs to support independentlearning and collaboration.

German School of Excellence AccreditationAchieved

This year GIS reached a very important mile-

Page 8: 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT - gsp.sightworksplatform.com · 2014-2015 YEAR-END FINANCE REPORT 04 Ulrike Weiler, GIS Board Treasurer & Jackie Ortega, Business Manager The 2014-2015 fiscal

stone. We are proud to be named a German School ofExcellence. The framework for pedagogical qualitymanagement covers a wide area of criteria that make aGerman school abroad successful. More informationabout the process can be found here (in German):Pedagogical quality management.

In May 2015 two Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen(ZfA) inspectors, representing the German government, visited GIS for a week to observe classes, reviewdocuments and interview our school communitymembers. Our accreditation visit affirmed ourcommitment to providing a quality program for a diversestudent group and provided valuable feedback aboutareas for improvement. Teacher-led quality circles arealready hard at work on these areas. The accreditationfeedback allows us to focus GIS’s efforts on the areasthat are most important to us – providing our studentswith a nurturing and inspiring program that facilitateseach student’s bi-lingual learning so that they can reachtheir potential.

Please join us in celebrating our accreditation!

International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School

Not only did we pass our Bund-Länder Inspektion (BLI) inspection, we also achieved the candidate phase on the way to IB certification. As we reflect on our accomplishments we are proud of the hard work each of our staff members has put into making the Primary Years Programme (PYP) happen. Teachers collaborate in planning new units and student activities and exchange ideas beyond their classroom.

A visit to our classrooms is always an exciting adventure.Students can be seen discussing many different ways tosort fruits and vegetables, building houses out ofrecycled materials after having spent a day outsidewithout the conveniences of everyday life, writing andpracticing a play for their student buddies that will showhow you can be a caring friend or be outside taking careof our creek area in collaboration with SOLVE.Integrated IB units such as “Migration” offer teachersand students opportunities to interweave language artsin both German and English as well as subject areas likeart, music and sport.

GIS earned the German School of Excellence award

after our accreditation visit.

Our teaching staff participated in IB workshops

throughout the last year so that we are ready for our

IB application and ultimately our certification in

September 2016.

by Jul ia Matschukat , Marketing and Social Media Coordinator

The 20th year of our school gave us the inspiration to look toward the future. After so many successful years, our program needed

assistance in establishing more awareness in the ever-expanding landscape of independent schools. We landed on three main focal

points; growth of our student body, increasing awareness and public relations within the Portland Metropolitan area, and differentiating

our message through our marketing campaign.

In December 2014, the Marketing Committee shepherded our school into a new era by changing our name to the German International

School. Along with a new name, the school’s logo was updated, our website was revamped and we integrated GIS families into our

marketing campaign.

Helping lead this committee with 20 years’ experience in Marketing was GIS parent Shawn Bavaresco. We sat down and interviewed

Shawn about the components needed to create a successful marketing campaign for GIS. We are deeply grateful for his time, expertise

and the tools to implement our new brand. Click here to read the complete interview with Shawn.
