Foreword by the President of The Pharos Arts Foundation

The Pharos Arts Foundation has had a full and varied programme of outstanding concerts in 2014 with

some of the world’s leading musicians and ensembles. Amongst the many events we have organized

this year were piano recitals with Francois Frederic Guy, Yevgeny Sudbin, Paavali Jumppanen and Ales-

sio Bax; a harpsichord recital with Mahan Esfahani; the Brodsky Quartet with mezzo soprano Lore Lixen-

berg; the Dudok String Quartet; the vocal ensemble Amarcord and the Trio Apaches to name a few.

Our two annual music festivals continue to attract exceptional musicians and have established a repu-

tation for excellence throughout Europe and beyond, giving thousands of visitors and local audiences

an unrivaled opportunity to experience music from the early medieval period to the present time. The

Foundation continues to commission and premiere new works by important composers from all over

the world. Our concerts have been accompanied by educational programmes that include morning

concerts for students, master-classes, workshops and lectures. We believe these efforts make a small

but significant contribution towards transforming our society and especially our youth. At a time when

our society is under pressure – socially, politically, economically – when its values have been eroded

and ethical principles ignored, it is vital to realize that regeneration comes from investing in education

and culture.

I believe a society bereft of culture, a society that does not give significance to music, art, and literature

will lose its way. Its immune system will be weakened and it will fall prey to exploitation and banal-

ity. The arts are not a luxury but the essential nourishment of the soul. The highest expressions of the

human spirit come to us in all cultures through music and the visual arts, through great architecture

and literature, because they reflect our place in the universe and our ultimate desire for transcendence.

Without a sense of beauty and awe of how we might exist beyond our limited time and space, our lives

contract into meaninglessness and we fall into a banal consumerism that quite literally consumes us. As

Seneca so aptly points out material wealth is not the one good. I believe passionately that a healthy, po-

litically mature society must be composed of individuals who invest in nourishing their spirit and their

souls as well as their physical bodies. Everything we do at Pharos reflects this.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the Pharos Arts Foundation

through yet another difficult year. It is deeply appreciated. Your commitment and enthusiasm for what

we do gives us the courage and will to continue our work. You can be sure that our joint efforts are

The Pharos Arts Foundation opened its 2014 season with a piano recital, organized in collaboration with the European University Cyprus, by the Greek pianist Panagiotis Trochopoulos. The programme included Holbrooke’s Fantasie-Sonata No.1 “The Haunted Palace”, as well as one of the most taxing works ever written for solo piano, Alkan’s momentous Concerto for Solo Piano. Composed in 1857 and lasting approximately 50 minutes, the Concerto (12 Studies in the Minor Keys) is an epic work requiring unprecedented levels of technical ability and physical stamina. Both works received their Cyprus premiere. The recital was given under the auspices of H.E. Mr. Vasilis Papaioannou, Ambassador of Greece, on the occasion of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Regarded as one of the most promising string quartets in Europe, the Dudok String Quartet appeared for the first time in Nicosia in a concert that was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands. Graduate of the Dutch String Quartet Academy, the Dudok Quartet has appeared in Europe’s most distinguished venues and is winner of many international competitions, including the 7th International Quatuors à Bordeaux, the International String Quartet Competition in Radom and the 27th Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition. For their concert at The Shoe Factory the Dudoks performed works by Haydn, Webern and Schumann.

Equally at home on both violin and viola, Yuri Zhislin has performed in Cyprus on various occasions, as part of the Pharos Chamber Music Festival. For his recital at The Shoe Factory, he teamed up with Katya Apekisheva, a pianist who is in demand internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, for an all-Romantic programme of works by Schubert, Brahms, Schnittke and Tchaikovsky.

Considered one of the leading Israeli pianists of his generation and having earned great critical acclaim, Ishay Shaer has appeared throughout the world and has won prizes in several national and international competitions. Among other venues, he has given recitals and concerto performances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room in the UK, the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, Sala Sinfonica Pablo Casals in Puerto Rico, the Preston Bradley Hall in Chicago in the USA, and Teatro Solis in Uruguay. Shaer was awarded the first prize in the 2006 Newport International Competition in the UK, and a year later, he won the third prize in the Silvio Bengalli International Piano Competition in Italy. During 2008, he was awarded three national competitions, among them the prestigious Clairmont prize, and in 2009 he was a prize-winner at the International Beethoven Competition in Bonn. For his first ever recital in Cyprus, which was supported by the Embassy of Israel, Shaer impressed the audience with his unique sensitivity and persuasive originality, performing works by Bach/Brahms, Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy and Bartók.

From the beginning of the Achaemenid Empire in the sixth century B.C. to present day Iran, the beautiful and ancient Persian culture has experienced periods of intense wealth and great loss. The classical music of the Persian culture reflects the deep sadness of brutal invasions, the complex beauty of nature, and fusion with a higher power of existence. Persian classical music has evolved as a fluid expression of the social and cultural values proudly embodied by the Persian people, as demonstrated by the musical theory system, the role of music in Persian culture, and the creation process of musical performance. There is currently more Western interest in Persian classical music than ever before. Perhaps as people listen to this mysteriously beautiful Persian art, they attain a kind of state where the world becomes transfigured, unveiling its marvellous images, and across an ineffable transparency, offers itself to the direct comprehension of every being capable of sensing. Performing Persian classical music on traditional instruments (Santour, Tar, Setar, Daf, Tonbak & Kamancheh), Ensemble Shabrovan appeared for the first time in Cyprus, in a tremendously inspirational, sold-out concert, which was supported by the Embassy of Iran.

Since its formation in 1972, the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 3000 concerts on the major stages of the world and has released more than 60 recordings. A natural curiosity and an insatiable desire to explore has propelled the group in a number of artistic directions and continues to ensure them not only a prominent presence on the international chamber music scene, but also a rich and varied musical existence. Mezzo-soprano Loré Lixenberg has performed as soloist with many distinguished orchestras and ensembles including BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Ensemble Intercontemporain.

The unique concert, presented by the Brodsky Quartet and Loré Lixenberg in Nicosia, included the newly commissioned song cycle Trees, Walls, Cities as well as works by Schubert and Purcell. Comprising eight songs written by renowned composers from eight different cities in partnership with local poets, Trees, Walls, Cities reflects going through and growing beyond the barriers of city walls between divided peoples. Having linked the cities of Derry (Northern Ireland), London (UK), Utrecht (the Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Nicosia (Cyprus) and Jerusalem (Israel) in creative reconciliation, this new song cycle (a modern day Winterreise), comprises eight songs written by local composers in partnership with local poets. Each city in the cycle’s journey calls to mind a particular tree connection, as trees are symbolic of freedom, life, nourishment, environment, building and travel.

The International Pharos Chamber Music Festival has established itself as the most important annual classical music event on the island, and has gained an international reputation for its quality concerts and magnificent settings. Guided by a visionary spirit and dedicated to artistic excellence and innovation, the Festival attracts over 2.000 visitors every year. It also maintains a strong tradition of community service, with educational concerts organized for students of public schools and a number of master-classes for young instrumentalists.

Organized from 23 until 31 May 2014, the 14th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival welcomed to Cyprus some of the most remarkable artists on the international music scene, for an extensive week of music-making.

The Festival opened with a piano recital with François-Frédéric Guy on Friday 23 May at The Shoe Factory. Regarded as one of the most fascinating pianists of his generation, Guy performed excerpts from Liszt’s Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses and Debussy’s Preludes Book II, as well as one of the most influential piano sonatas ever written – Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 in C minor. The recital was organized in collaboration with the Institute Francais Chypre.

The sensational young harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani returned to The Shoe Factory, on 24 May 2014, for another great performance. The recital featured an all-Italian baroque programme, with works by Merula, Frescobaldi, Scarlatti and Storace, which was impeccably delivered on the Foundation’s Graziano Bandini harpsichord.

The third consecutive Festival concert at The Shoe Factory, on 25 May, welcomed for the first time in Cyprus the Amarcord Vocal Ensemble. Founded two decades ago by former members of the St Thomas’s Boys Choir in Leipzig, the Amarcord Ensemble has since become one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. The concert, which was organised in collaboration the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, presented an extremely interesting and diverse programme – Romantic Lieder by Schumann, Mendelssohn and their contemporaries, as well as a musical journey with traditional songs from all over the world.

Between 26 and 30 May 2014, the 14th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival moved to the Royal Manor House, in Kouklia, Paphos – one of the finest surviving monuments of Frankish architecture in Cyprus and a UNESCO World Heritage site – for five consecutive concerts with some outstanding international musicians, including pianists Francois Frederic Guy, Ashley Wass and Yevgeny Sudbin; violinists Daishin Kashimoto, Tanja Becker-Bender, Boris Brovtsyn, Levon Chilingirian; violist Diemut Poppen and cellist Alexander Chaushian. The astoundingly rich programme – diverse, exciting and seamlessly performed – ensured the audience left feeling uplifted and inspired. It was a magical week indeed, one that will be remembered for a long time by all those who were present.

The Festival ended as it started, at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia, with a sold-out recital by pianist Yevgeny Sudbin and cellist Alexander Chaushian on 31 May 2014. The first part of the concert featured Sudbin – hailed by The Telegraph as “potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century” – and Chaushian in solo works by J.S Bach, Chopin and Scriabin, while the two musicians joined forces in the second part to perform works for cello and piano by Franck and Rachmaninov. This astounding duo was the ideal way to conclude another amazing edition of the International Pharos Chamber Music Festival.

Duos are common enough in the musical world, but sibling duos are a rare thing. Slava and Leonard Grigoryan are that rare thing. There is no rivalry, only the bonds of family and a love of music. Since their first acclaimed Australian tour in 2002, Slava and Leonard have astounded audiences worldwide with their guitar virtuosity. They have toured extensively throughout Australia and overseas: to Europe, the United States, Britain, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East. When not on stage they are in the studio, having released five duo albums, all of which have been nominated for ARIA awards. The Grigoryan Brothers appeared to Cyprus for the first time, as part of their European tour 2014, in a recital that was co-organised with the Australian High Commission. The programme included music by Piazzolla, Gnattali and Lovelady as well as excerpts from their new release The Seasons (based on Tchaikovsky’s work).

One of Denmark’s premier jazz musicians, Stefan Pasborg, and his band, Ibrahim Electric, appeared to Cyprus for the first time, in a sold-out concert, which was organized in collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy in Nicosia at the Foundation’s open-air venue, The Olive Grove. The huge crowd experienced a unique performance – one that was energetic, exciting and enlivening, and quite representative of the band as each of its members possesses an extremely high level of musical energy. The band’s quirky, provocative, extroverted, original music sent cascades of pearls from the speakers – whether Niclas Knudsen was playing a guitar solo in the spirit of Ali Farka Toure, Jeppe Tuxen was playing a solo resembling the Hammond-icons of the 1960’s, and Stefan Pasborg was playing a drum-solo with avant-garde elements, the one thing that over-shined it all, was their love for playing and performing, and the sheer intensity of their expression!

Pharos, in collaboration with the Moufflon Bookshop, presented a talk by Professor of Classics and Art History at New York University, Joan Breton Connelly, and the launch of her revolutionary book The Parthenon Enigma. Connelly’s research is particularly focused on the Parthenon’s legendary frieze: the 525-foot-long relief sculpture that originally encircled the upper reaches before it was partially destroyed by Venetian cannon fire (in the 17th century) and most of what remained was shipped off to Britain (in the 19th century) among the Elgin marbles. The frieze’s vast enigmatic procession – a dazzling pageant of cavalrymen and elders, musicians and maidens – has for more than two hundred years been thought to represent a scene of annual civic celebration in the birthplace of democracy. But thanks to a once-lost play by Euripides (the discovery of which, in the wrappings of a Hellenistic Egyptian mummy, is only one of this book’s intriguing adventures), Connelly has uncovered a long-buried meaning, a story of human sacrifice set during the city’s mythic founding. The event was held under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus on the occasion of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Hamlet “Globe to Globe” tour opened at Shakespeare’s Globe on 23 April 2014, the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. The Globe’s most ambitious tour yet, the two-year tour of Hamlet is scheduled to visit every single country on earth. The Pharos Arts Foundation proudly collaborated with Shakespeare’s Globe to bring its enchanting Hamlet tour to the Αncient Τheatre of Kourion, for one performance only, on 5 July 2014. The production was a young, fresh version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of deferred revenge. Just twelve actors performed over two dozen parts in a comparatively brisk two hours and forty minutes. It was the same Globe On Tour production that toured the UK, Europe and the United States in 2011 and 2012, when the New York Times called it “a production that prizes efficiency, clarity, accessibility and above all energy” and the Daily Telegraph praised its “young, unjaded and open-hearted” portrayal of the Danish prince.

The International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival has established itself as one of the most innovative and cutting-edge annual music events in Eastern Mediterranean. Under the artistic direction of the renowned Cypriot composer, Evis Sammoutis, the Festival is dedicated to the promotion of new music: The well-established masterpieces of the contemporary music literature of the 20th century as well as new works by the younger generation of composers, many of whom are commissioned by the Foundation to write new pieces especially for this occasion.

Organised between 4 and 8 October 2014 at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia, the 6th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival focused on the connection of new music and other forms of art, as well as alternative forms of contemporary music.

The 6th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival opened on 4 October 2014 with an innovative concert-concept by the Ergon Ensemble, during which films of the ‘silent era’ were screened simultaneously with the live performance of new works, attaining therefore a new dimension, character and denotation. One of the leading contemporary music ensembles in Greece, Ergon’s mission is to promote, through its virtuosic performances and ambitious programming, contemporary masterpieces, particularly the most recent works of Greek and foreign composers. Their sold-out concert at The Shoe Factory featured cinematic masterpieces such as Un Chien Andalou – Luis Buñuel’s first film, written in collaboration with the surreal artist Salvador Dali, and set to music by Alexandros Mouzas; Joris Ivens’ Regen – a cinematic poem on the transformation of Amsterdam by rain, set to music by Hanns Eisler; Anemic Cinema – a Dadaist / Surrealist, experimental film by Marcel Duchamp, set to music by Yannis Kyriakides, and Michel Van der Aa’s Transit for piano and video. The concert also featured Ralph Steiner’s short film Mechanical Principles – an abstract, mesmerizing look at the world of gears, pistons, and other forms of mechanical movement, which was set to music by the two winners of the Festival’s “Call for Works”, Andreas Tsiartas from Cyprus and Argyro Koliogiorgi from Greece.

On 6 October, the Festival welcomed the return visit of Hayk Melikyan. Recognized internationally as one of the most versatile and imaginative performers of contemporary music and among today’s most engaging virtuoso pianists, Melikyan joined forces with the sensational violinist Hugo Ticciati, who has been described by the great Arvo Pärt as an artist “who has a rare ability to convey a profound understanding of the music and shed light on its spiritual intent”. A truly unforgettable and enchanting musical experience for everyone who was present, the duo’s recital included a number of contemporary classics by composers such as Messiaen, Lutoslawski, Pärt, Takemitsu, interspersed with works by the younger generation of internationally renowned composers such as Evis Sammoutis, Vito Zuraj, Esaias Järnegard and Albert Schnelzer.

The Festival ended with a high note, on 8 October, with an exciting concert of live electronics, improvisation and free jazz by Soundspaces – a fascinating duo programme featuring Johannes Schwarz (bassoon) and Sascha Armbruster (saxophone), who were joined by sound-engineer Sebastian Schottke. The sold-out concert was co-organised with the Goethe-Institut Zypern.

Apart from the concerts, the 6th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival also featured lectures by Alexandros Mouzas, artistic co-ordinator of the Ergon Ensemble, visual artist Joanna Jones, a number of screenings receiving their Cyprus premiere and many educational activities and community workshops.

Notwithstanding her young age, Armenian soprano Tereza Gevorgyan has been distinguished throughout the world for the beauty of her vocal colour and her eloquent performances. Consisting of the sensational Kathrin Pechlof (harp), the renowned saxophonist Christian Weidner and the WDR Jazz Prize winner Robert Landfermann (double-bass), the Trio has become one of Europe’s most sought-after jazz ensembles and has appeared in Festivals throughout the world. Its unique musical language is an extremely personal kind of chamber jazz, intimate yet inspiring, contemporary yet narrative, always rich in lyrical and dynamic nuances.

One of Spain’s most talented young guitarists, Ramón Carnota appeared in Cyprus for the first time in a sold-out concert which was supported by the Embassy of Spain. Prize winner in some of the most prestigious international guitar competitions such as Andrés Segovia and Cesar Aira (Spain), and Markneukirchen (Germany), Carnota has given solo recitals all over Europe and has appeared with numerous orchestras, such as Sinfónica Ciudad de Pontevedra, Symphony Orchestra of the Maastricht Conservatory, and Orquesta de Cámara Galega. For his recital at The Shoe Factory, Carnota performed an all-Spanish programme of works written for classical guitar and vihuela, by composers such as Luis de Narváez, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tárrega, and Isaac Albéniz.

Regarded as one of Finland’s most prominent pianists and one of the most distinguished musicians in the world, Paavali Jumppanen has gained international critical and audience acclaim, with reviews such as “a rare wedding of intellectual penetration, coloristic imagination, and sheer virtuoso firepower” and “immense power and an extraordinary range of colors.” After winning first prize at Helsinki’s Maj Lind Competition in 1994, Paavali Jumppanen has become regular soloist of many of Finland’s leading orchestras. He has also performed extensively in Europe, Japan, and Australia, appearing with such orchestras as the Melbourne Symphony, the Oslo Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Jumppanen has often performed the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas cycle and he regularly commissions works from contemporary composers. Having worked with Pierre Boulez himself, Jumppanen has become a celebrated advocate of Boulez’s music. His repertoire also includes the large cycle for solo piano, Vingt Regards Sur l’Enfant Jėsus by Olivier Messiaen, which he performed as part of the Pharos Arts Foundation’s Series in 2008. For his long-awaited return to Cyprus, Jumppanen performed works by Debussy, Schumann and the Cyprus premiere of a work by Finnish composer Jaakko Kuusisto. The recital was supported by the Embassy of Finland.

The Pharos Arts Foundation presented the Cyprus debut concert of the recently-formed Trio Apaches, comprising three of the UK’s most respected soloists – violinist Matthew Trusler, cellist Thomas Carroll and pianist Ashley Wass. The Trio was established in 2012 as the consequence of a shared desire to focus on innovative projects and challenging cross-genre collaborations, as well as to present masterworks of the trio repertoire in unfamiliar contexts. Very much representative of the group’s intention to create projects outside the traditional realm of the piano trio, Trio Apaches’ concert in Nicosia featured a newly commissioned transcription of Debussy’s La Mer by the Royal Philharmonic Society Award winner, composer Sally Beamish. The composer managed to create something that has taken a life of its own and will unquestionably become a staple part of the trio repertoire – a masterpiece that both complements the original score and also communicates entirely independently of it. The concert of Trio Apaches also included John Ireland’s Piano Trio No.2 – a single movement work presenting the grim landscape and terrible wastage of World War I – as well as one of the most significant works written for the piano trio medium –Tchaikovsky’s elegiac Piano Trio in A minor.

As part of its Cyprus Artists Series, the Pharos Arts Foundation presented a concert with the international rising opera star Cypriot soprano Zoe Nicolaidou, clarinettist George Georgiou and pianist Annini Tsiouti. Inaugurated in 2007, Pharos’ Cyprus Artists Series is presented concurrently with its internationally established annual Concert and Recital Series. The Series is dedicated to the promotion and support of leading musicians of Cypriot ancestry, as well as musicians residing and pursuing a career in Cyprus. In keeping with the Foundation’s mission to promote artistic excellence, the Cyprus Artists Series aims to offer Cyprus audiences the opportunity to experience fine performances, while offering Cypriot musicians a platform for musical exchange and dialogue. For their concert at The Shoe Factory, Nicolaidou, Georgiou and Tsiouti joined forces in an extremely interesting and diverse programme of chamber music, songs and Lieder by Schubert, Spohr, Villa-Lobos, Weiner, Lovreglio, and the world premiere of a work by Vincent Guyot.

Three years after their phenomenal, sold-out concert at The Shoe Factory, partners in life and art, Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung returned to Nicosia for another remarkable recital. With his lyrical playing, insightful interpretations, and dazzling facility, Bax has been praised by Gramophone Magazine as “a ravishing listening experience”. He is First Prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions, as well as a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, and has appeared as soloist with over 100 orchestras all over the world. Lucille Chung, hailed by The Sunday Times as “a considerable artist, admirable for her bold choice of music”, made her debut at the age of ten with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra and Charles Dutoit. Since then, she has performed an extensive concerto repertoire with over 65 leading orchestras, and won a number of major competitions, including the First Prize at the Stravinsky International Piano Competition. Their sold-out recital in Nicosia, which was supported by the Embassy of Italy, featured works for piano four-hands by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Ravel, and for solo piano by Rachmaninov.

Pharos’ last concert of 2014, co-organized with the Institut Français de Chypre and supported by TOTAL E&P CYPRUS, featured La Main Harmonique, under the direction of Frédéric Bétous. Representing a hub for fruitful encounters among specialized musicians and singers, who are always distinguished by a sense of curiosity, adventure, and musical excellence and a never-ending spirit of discovery, La Main Harmonique specializes in the exploration and performance of the polyphonic masterpieces of the Renaissance so as to unveil and convey this rich, yet relatively unknown, repertoire to the general audience. The eight singers of La Main Harmonique gave an elating performance of one of the most emblematic works of the Renaissance: Orlando Lasso’s master-cycle Prophetiae Sibyllarum, consisting of 13 miniature, secular motets based on poems by Virgil, Horace and Seneca.

One of the most important aspects of the Pharos Arts Foundation’s activities is its Education Programme, which has so far benefited over 65.000 students in Cyprus. The Pharos CentreA vision for the Future

Since its inception, in 1998, the Cyprus-based Pharos Arts Foundation has established an international reputation for artistic and cultural excellence. The Foundation’s programme includes a regular concert and recital series, an annual Chamber Music Festival now in its fifteenth year and a Contemporary Music Festival now in its seventh year, a music education programme, exhibitions of contemporary art, publishing, and a lecture series on issues of global importance with distinguished speakers.

Our vision is to expand these activities by creating a centre for Art, Culture, and Dialogue in a beautiful setting of ancient olive groves and pine forest at Delikipos. The Centre will provide space for the visual andperforming arts as well as a library and accommodation for visiting artists, writers, composers, musicians, and thinkers from all disciplines and backgrounds.

An important element of this Centre would be the Pharos Forum, providing a venue for dialogue and debate on issues that concern us all. Universal spiritual and material progress which we call civilization can only flourish in what has become the global village of the 21st century if we share basic ethical principles and develop a new world view, a paradigm determined by a reverence for life and nature as well as creative expression. The distinguishing characteristics of the Pharos Forum will undoubtedly be its setting and its human scale, bringing people together from all over the world to an intimate natural environment that allows the landscape to work its magic, and gives individuals time to develop genuine friendships and valuable conversations. John McMurray, the Scottish philosopher said ‘The purpose of all meaningful knowledge is action, and the purpose of all meaningful action is friendship’. The Pharos Forum will cultivate these crucial notions and offer new collaborative ways of addressing difference and discord – of moving away from private understandings, as Heraclitus would have put it, towards perceptions of unity.

An additional crucial component of the project is the emphasis that would be given to music and the arts. All cultures and religions have expressed their highest aspirations through music and the arts. Sophocles says ‘He who neglects the arts when young has lost the past and is the dead to the future’. The Pharos Centre will offer participants opportunities to listen to music-making of the highest order from the western classical tradition as well as other cultures and to engage in dialogue with leading international artists.

The Pharos Centre, situated on an island at a pivotal point between three continents and diverse cultures, will bring together men and women of goodwill to find a common language and to explore ways in which we can develop a saner, healthier and more sustainable world at the beginning of a millennium.
