2014-15 Wrestling IPS High Performance Operational Plan

Overview This plan is a blueprint for our High Performance program. Following is a discussion on the review and continuation of Best Practices that has produced high-level performances and results this past year. The system in place is operationally adjusted based on needs, assessments, and conditions, both within and beyond our control. The most significant development influencing our program is the changing dynamic of our performance group. High Performance guidelines have been reviewed and implemented this year ensuring the long- term sustainability of our program. The BC Wrestling IPS program continues to lead the way in our country. Our top athletes are preparing, and are on track for Rio, and we have an exciting group of future star athletes preparing for Tokyo and beyond. In this report, I will address the following areas:

1. Objectives 2. Gap analysis 3. Leadership 4. Development initiatives 5. Age Class performance plans 6. High Performance plans 7. Performance enhancement / Sport Medical

1. Objectives

The primary objective in our program remains the same: to implement a system of optimal delivery of programming that results in High Performance. Our BC High Performance program reached high performance levels this year with our athletes’ World international performances.

Senior Women’s Worlds Lappage 8th Senior Men’s Worlds Garcia 21st, Gill 16th, Junior Men Worlds Dhesi 1st (highest men’s medal at Jr

Worlds in 25 years) Commonwealth Games Lappage 1st , Gill 1st FISU World’s Lappage 1st

Note: Provincial / National level -won 7 of 8 Gold at Junior Nationals -Our national ranking continues to dominate -Won national team title for: Cadet, Juvenile, Junior, Senior divisions - Achieved over 90% of program KPI’s -improvement on IPS performance score

2. Gap analysis The areas we identified last year as gaps in our system have been addressed. Programming continues to be emphasized in this year’s plan.

Women’s development Created more opportunities for more women to compete at a high level in every category -age class teams to USA (St Louis, Mt Vernon, OTC – Colorado) -L2 athletes attended World team camp in Calgary -“Fight Like a Girl” development camps - 15 to date. - Team BC development camps planned. (Clete Hanson ) - success measured by number of events attended and athletes participating

Increased development opportunities and service delivery outside of lower mainland The greatest improvements in this area are the delivery and planning of outreach clinics in the province; associating our high performance program with development through leadership. 10 sessions are planned throughout the province this year using our IST coaches (Pineda , Hanson)and athletes. This represents a 50% increase in this area.

Innovations

A coaches’ corner (website) is to be established, providing streamed events and instruction to the membership. This is currently being developed with an overall website reconstruction. (Clete Hanson)

Transition from age class programming to High Performance This will be accomplished through NTC programming and the new BC Junior Olympic initiative. Found in the performance plan, this has started and has been a success with athletes targeted for enhanced training and competition: Women- World Team camp Calgary

- NTC St. Louis - OTC Colorado

Men - Tblissi , Georgia camp - Canada Cup camp Toronto - Joint training with Korea Juniors - National TOPS

Responsible: McKay, minimum 2 opportunities per gender

Funding challenges Ongoing challenge, with increased expenses and limited and reduced resources. In progress: BCWA Marketing and promotion

3. Leadership

The BCWA performance program continues to sustain a professional model with our Provincial Coach and part time IST coaches. Dave McKay led the Canadian Senior men’s team to the World Championships and John Pineda led the Junior men to the Junior World championships. John coached our Gold medal winning athlete Amar Dhesi at the event. BCWA employs Clete Hanson (Women’s program) through the end of the current fiscal period. Found in the contract this year is a delineation of tasks including development initiatives and efficiencies, and greater synchronization between the men and women’s program.

4. Development initiatives BC Junior Olympic 2016 / 2020 Program The objective of this program is to provide enhanced training and competitive opportunities leading to BC medal success and participation in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. 2014-15 plan:

1. Develop plan, target athletes, articulate secure sponsorship (ongoing) 2. Events (2013-14):

USA Training camp Women OTC –Colorado November Spring Tour May

Men -Asia (Japan) Tentative McKay - 2 events per gender

5. Age Class Performance plans Our age class operational plans are the responsibility of our IPS performance coaches. These plans have independent objectives that meet specific gaps in the system concerning boys and girls programming. (John Pineda)

a) Boys Performance Program IPS Boys Performance Coach -John Pineda Overview The Boy’s program utilizes one of wrestling’s greatest resources to its benefit; the US High School Wrestling system. We have linked with the programs in Washington and Oregon primarily, and will continue to support initiatives such as the National duals - Stu Hart Competition, US regionals, etc. Boys Development / Performance plan http://www.bcwrestling.com/content/home.asp b) Girls Performance Program IPS Girls Performance Coach- Clete Hanson Overview

The focus of this athlete development plan is to increase the participation of female wrestlers and coaches within BC by providing equal and female specific training opportunities and competitions. The girls’ program will focus on recruiting Canadian athletes to our BC system and adopting a Junior Olympic Program with common objectives.

Similar to the men, the women will take advantage of the emerging programs in the Pacific Northwest. Hosting the girls Titan Mercury WC from California is pat of the exchange program in place for this year. Targeted top girls will be provided enhanced training and competition through the Jr. Olympic program. Girls Developme

6. High Performance Plans

Success from the Junior and Senior Nationals validates our High Performance program system. This was punctuated by the outstanding performance of our young Junior Men’s team, which won an unprecedented 7 of 8 gold medals. With this timely success, we see our Men’s Senior team in transition, still winning the National Team title. Haislan Garcia led the way along with Arjun Gill winning his first National Senior title and a Commonwealth Games Gold medal. Arjun was 30 seconds and one takedown from winning a bronze medal at the 2014 World championships. Amer Dhesi is a rising star in our organization, winning a silver medal at the 2014 World Junior Championships. The Women’s Junior team and program is also in transition. We predict a strong future with our up and coming Juveniles and Cadets, along with a major coaching focus on our girls development programs. The Women’s Senior team also did very well, placing second in the 1st stage tournament. The Women’s Nationals were completed in Calgary on May 2nd, with Danielle Lappage winning at 63kg. She won the FISU worlds and placed 8th at her first Senior Worlds.

A key element to our planning will be to establish clear selection and training guidelines, maintaining a strong centralized Training Centre model. The High Performance guideline will give the direction to our training approach and system in BC.

BCWA Athlete High Performance Program Guidelines http://www.bcwrestling.com/content/home.asp

HP System Benchmarks 2013-14 Review Overview: Our High Performance system continues to be successful, meeting a high percentage of KPI’s. This year, we completed and were successful in 90% of indicators. The indicators were realistic and challenging. We continue to strive for improvement, leading to podium performances. Communication was a key element needing attention this year in articulating the program parameters and expectations to the coaches and athletes. This is found in the HP program guideline document. A High Performance system embodies process variables and performance / result outcomes. This review served to identify what we did well, and a model to build on. Additionally, the findings punctuate gaps that are used for direction in the articulation of our KPI’s. Finally, key members of our HP network (Prov coach, IPS coaches, technical committee)are tasked and contribute to the planning and implementation of the identified variables. Direction is given concerning focusing on areas of improvement.

2) Performance / Result Our overall performance score has gone up and we met most of our self-generated KPI’s this year.

National results We lead Canada in most categories. Improvement was found in our Senior women’s category. Our Junior men won 7 of 8 national titles, which was unprecedented. Men won team title , women top 2. Comments: An emphasis in BC is being made in addressing our women’s program. Greater opportunities and development are priorities to be continued. In the men’s program, a focus has been on the development squad (U18, U24) over the past several years. This effort came to fruition this year. This is found in our Junior Olympic strategy. It is an effort to elevate our future stars, by exposing them to higher levels of training and competition. This was a planned event with significant financial resources directed to this project. International Results: We continue to have the most athletes and highest results within the various international teams. Significant results include 8th at the Senior Women’s Worlds, Gold medal at the Junior Worlds and a gold medal at the FISU worlds. This is our second consecutive year with a medal at the Men’s Junior Worlds. The Gold medal was the highest medal in 25 years.

7. Performance Enhancement Services

A) Sport Science Many of our athletes attended the National team operations in Calgary. We ran our own Team Operations camp in May in the Lower Mainland complete with a nutrition consult, physical testing, and functional assessments of our athletes. Our plan is to host another event in November at SFU in conjunction with a national talent ID camp. We will conduct seminars in nutrition and mental training, as well as conduct physical tests of our athletes. We will evaluate results based on our 2 previous opportunities to collect data at team operations, and provide educational opportunities for our athletes. We will continue to provide sport science consultation for our athletes, exposing them to top professionals in their field.

Strength and conditioning We have centralized the main training group to SFU. Derek Hanson -SFU will coordinate the athletes off mat training in conjunction with the coaching staff. This group includes athletes outside of the SFU training group, for off mat Strength and conditioning. SFU Strength and Conditioning activity and planning Report Provided below are the key elements of the approach to the work with the wrestling athletes on the SFU campus. Key Services

Program planning for strength, power and speed abilities. In person workout implementation on a daily basis Athlete monitoring and communication with regard to training status and

testing results. Rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols. Recovery and regeneration strategies and protocols.

Training Programs Training programs for the SFU varsity wrestling program are updated every four months, corresponding with the academic semesters (Fall, Winter and Summer semesters). We meet with the SFU wrestling coaching staff to determine key training objectives and competition dates prior to preparing the program in August, December and April of each year. For the most part, the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling athletes follow a similar program, with some minor adjustments made on an individual basis. National Team athletes have their programs updated on a more frequent basis (at least 4-5 times per year) to coincide with individual differences related to competition dates, travel and injury. In some cases, weekly changes have to be incorporated when athletes are traveling on the road for both training camps and competitions, taking into consideration time and energy constraints, as well as facility and equipment availability.

Technical Direction There is a heavy emphasis on movement technique and biomechanics in all of the training done by the wrestling athletes. All weightlifting activities are monitored by our coaching staff on a daily basis with the typical frequency of weight training occurring three times per week. Speed, explosive medicine ball throws and plyometric work is also performed two times per week with an emphasis on movement efficiency and force application. Endurance training protocols are typically carried out by wrestling coaching staff, as they have an extensive database on standards and norms for a variety of running distances.

Page 12: 2014-15 Wrestling IPS High Performance Operational Plan · 2019-12-06 · 1 2014-15 Wrestling IPS High Performance Operational Plan Overview This plan is a blueprint for our High

12

Testing Protocols and Athlete Monitoring Our standard testing protocol includes any number of the following exercises and drills, depending on time available to test and time of the year:

Reverse Overhead 4kg Medicine Ball Throw (metres) Standing Broad Jump (metres) Standing Vertical Jump (centimetres) Grip Strength – Right and Left (lbs) Bench Press (1RM) Power Clean (1RM) Back Squat (1RM) Bench Press – Maximum Repetitions (135lbs men, 65lbs women) Chin-Ups – Maximum Repetitions

An ongoing challenge with our standardized testing protocols is finding appropriate times of the year to test large groups of athletes when they are not burdened and fatigued by travel, competitions, training camps and school commitments. It should also be noted that endurance testing is typically carried about by the wrestling coaching staff with an emphasis on running tests over two (2) miles. We have attempted using subjective athlete readiness questionnaires with a number of athletes, tracking their responses three time per week on average. We are still in the process of working with coaching staff and improving our data collection efficiency and consistency of implementation.

Future Directions We are encouraged to continue working with all of the wrestling athletes that having training based on the Simon Fraser University, Burnaby campus. We are working toward a number of key goals over the next year, including:

Comprehensive support to athletes with potential for World Championships and Olympics.

Ongoing development of athletes from the SFU Varsity Program and the NTC/Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club to elite levels of performance.

Increased communication and coordination of services with coaching staff and integrated services team members across Canada.

Ongoing testing and monitoring of our locally based athletes. Enhanced involvement in youth development and testing programs for the

sport of Wrestling.

Nutrition We will work with our NT lead nutritionist Kelly Drager and CSI- Emma McCrudden. A consults are ongoing and available to all of our athletes.

Mental training Mental training and skills will be introduced at our Team Operations in November 2014 and consults with Donna Perry and our women’s team is ongoing. B) Medical Services We have the top Medical services team in the country servicing our program. Accessibility is also a huge asset. Scott Vass is our coordinator for PE and MS programming and allows for quick and efficient solutions. SFU Therapy clinic This clinic primarily for our centralized training provides daily training support for on mat training periods, injury assessment, and treatment for targeted athletes. We also provide medical coverage at clinics, training camps, and competitions at SFU. This is found through onsite coverage and facility access. All varsity athletes complete a Pre-Season Medical, which includes medical history and a functional assessment performed by a Physician. We also require the completion of a baseline concussion test (SCAT 3) for targeted varsity athletes. Follow-up meetings with coaching staff are conducted when needed. Provincial and NTC athletes are provided individualized services. 2014-15 service provider list:
